It's really doubtful anything will ever beat or come close to Spirited Away. The two biggest films of the past 5 years, Ponyo (also Miyazaki) and Avatar didn't come close.
Ponyo did 51.0% of it's Box Office, and 54.8% of it's admissions. Avatar did 51.3% of it's Box Office, and 43.4% of it's admissions.
Nothing compares to Hayao Miyazaki n Japan (he has 4 of the Top 10 films All-Time and 3 of them in the Top 5).
He also has a new film that is rumored to come out this Summer, his first since Ponyo in 2008.
You have my full attention. Wiki has Ghibli releasing a Takahata film this year, and no hints of what Miyazaki might be up to or when. What have you heard?

Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Charts Updated
Studio Ghibli's co-founders are both working on films that are scheduled to be released in the near future.
Isao Takahata (best known for Grave of the Fireflies) is directing a film that is supposed to be released very soon (either 2013 or 2014). It's his first film since My Neighbors the Yamadas in 1999. The film is either a direct adaptation or loose adaptation of Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari (Princess Kaguya Story) of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a 10th century folktale.
Hayao Miyazaki is directing his first film since Ponyo in 2008 that is supposed to be about Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Zero fighter plane during World War 2. There are rumors the film may be called Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises), but nothing has been confirmed. It's been mentioned by Toshio Suzuki (Studio Ghibli Producer) the story may not be one everyone (probably younger audiences) in the audience will enjoy. This film also has a tentative release date for 2013/2014.
The release of these two films completes Studio Ghibli's 5-year plan dedicating the first 3 years to younger directors and talents (they worked on Arrietty and Kokuriko Hill), while the final two years would be major projects from the co-founders and veterans in the studio.
It would be interesting if they release the films at the same time as a double feature the same way they did My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies in 1988.

Upcoming Theater Counts:
12/8 Today, I Started Loving You [301] Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Fourze & Wizard [299]
12/14 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey [332] (876 screens)
12/15 Humanoid Monster, Bem [331] One Piece Film Z [298]
The Hobbit gets an expected count on par with other Hollywood blockbusters. 3D share isn't known yet. Toho is going quite wide with Humanoid Monster, Bem. Incredible for One Piece. That's 110 more locations than the last film which opened over ¥1 billion and held the psa record for a wide release before Evangelion 3.0.
I'll be tracking The Hobbit, One Piece, and Humanoid Monster similar to the way I tracked Evangelion 3.0 last month. That weekend is going to be big.

One Piece Film Z may beat The Hobbit, especially in admissions, and win the Dec. 15-16 Weekend. Humanoid Monster should post pretty good numbers, too, but will have to settle for third.
Biggest Opening Weekends (Since 2008)
1. Alice in Wonderland (Disney) - ¥1,316,539,470 / 828,149 admissions (859 screens) 2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Warner Bros.) - ¥1,301,851,375 / 880,697 admissions (910 screens) 3. Rookies (Toho) - ¥1,225,279,099 / 987,387 admissions (428 screens) 4. Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) - ¥1,133,513,323 / 771,764 admissions (224 screens) 5. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Disney) - ¥1,113,089,886 / 766,633 admissions (800 screens) 6. One Piece Film Strong World (TOEI) - ¥1,038,445,263 / 819,738 admissions (190 screens) 7. Ponyo (Toho) - ¥1,034,459,534 / 812,557 admissions (481 screens) 8. Boys Over Flowers THE FINAL (Toho) - ¥1,005,428,333 / 805,350 admissions (400 screens)
Strong World sold out 103 of it's 188 theaters on opening weekend.
This video, showing the line to the cinema, is a perfect example of what it was like 3 years ago:

Ouch. That must hurt.

Far from it. It ranks 16th.
The Biggest Opening Weekend Ever belongs to, The Matrix Reloaded (Warner Bros.) ¥2,222,854,550 / 1,486,743 admissions (631 screens)
Even with 3D, films today have a hard time doing half that.

So it was fairly frontloaded everywhere. Still, though, to get ¥11b is amazing. That's be about $100m right?

Reviews were mixed and the film had below average legs, it finished with about $90 million. Exchange rates often screws things up and makes USD comparisons totally pointless (at least in Japan), in my opinion.
I'll post a Top 25 All-Time Chart soon. I need to update them a little anyway.

It seems pretty difficult to crack the Top 25 admissions list in 2012 and the crack the Top 25 JPY list too. The USD list seems like the best bet for 2012/13 releases.

That's mostly due to seniors making up a large potion of it's audience. Seniors get a 40% discount at every major cinema chain in Japan. It grossed ¥9.05 billion which gave it a ¥1,131 avg. ticket price, about 10% below the national average.

Alright for Kamen Rider. ¥300 million used to be pretty common for these films, but lately it's become a challenge. Still, it's up over Summer's release and it'll allow the film to reach the ¥1 billion milestone easily and the lower openers in this franchise tend to have slightly better legs so they all end up grossing nearly the same anyway (¥1.5 billion range).
Very good for Today. This film should play strong all month and most likely achieve at least ¥1.5 billion (near $20 million).
There were some sizable drops this weekend for the holdovers due to last Saturday being ¥1,000 day. This hurt 007: Skyfall the most.

Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Mugiwaras Vs. Hobbits Vs. Humano
Dec. 08-09 Weekend Ranking
1 (-) Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Fourze & Wizard (Toei) NEW! 2 (1) 007: Skyfall (Sony) Week 2 3 (-) Today, I Started Loving You (Toho) NEW! 4 (2) Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) Week 4 5 (3) Inazuma Eleven Go! Vs. Danball Senkei W: The Movie (Toho) Week 2 6 (4) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) Week 5 7 (5) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) Week 6 8 (7) A Chorus of Angels (Toei) Week 6 9 (6) Spirit Helper (Toho) Week 4 10 (9) Trouble with the Curve (Warner Bros.) Week 3
The lastest Kamen Rider opened on 298 screens and debuted to ¥281,635,350 ($3.44 million) with 244,870 admissions over the weekend. The opening is 10% better than August's Kamen Rider film, but still below the average opening since 2006 for the franchise. Not that it matters, it'll still end up grossing close to ¥1.5 billion (about $20 million) again like every other Kamen Rider film.
Today, I Started Loving You had a solid start earning ¥225,323,000 ($2.75 million) with 188,378 admissions over the weekend. The opening in on par with comparable films such as Kimi ni Todoke or Paradise Kiss and should result in at least ¥1.5 billion (about $20 million).
007: Skyfall exceeded ¥1 billion with ¥1,085,537,950 ($13.24 million) with 907,875 admissions after 9 days in release. I'm not sure if ¥3 billion is possible now, though ¥2.5 billion ($30 million) appears safe which will still make it the highest grossing Bond film. It was also reported here that the film reached 94,277,612 pounds and became the highest grossing film ever in the UK.
Evangelion 3.0 exceeded ¥4 billion ($50 million) after four weeks in release and surpasses it's predecessor. It's the sixth film to exceed ¥4 billion in 2012. Depending on what the actual figure is, the film will be the 5th or 6th biggest film of 2012.

One Piece Vs. The Hobbit Vs. Humanoid Monster SELLOUT WATCH (12/15)
One Piece is getting the biggest screens at nearly every location while The Hobbit has a very small advantage in the number of showtimes since it's playing on more screens. Early results have One Piece in the lead for sure, though.
Also, if a showtime is listed as ( ) that means tickets for that time isn't available yet (Toho locations). And Wald 9, Burg 7 and Cinecitta's online ticket sales are through the same company and don't list weekend showtimes until Wednesday evening unless it's for events (midnights and big advance ticket sales).
