Post Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest Charts
As mentioned in the weekend actuals write-up, Star Wars: The Force Awakens exceeded the ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster milestone on Sunday, its 45th day in release.

It's the first live-action film since 2010's Alice in Wonderland to achieve this milestone. Also, this makes it the eleventh fastest reported film to reach the milestone (sixth for a live-action film), and even more impressively, it's done so two days sooner than The Phantom Menace. It's unlikely to have the late-legs that Episode I had to outgross it, but it still has quite a bit left in the starship engine.

Fastest to ¥1 billion (3 Days or Less)

This weekend is a bit challenging to predict because of last weekend's incredible holds across the board. I'm going with some pretty big drops for most films given their holds last weekend, and the sizable decline in pre-sales and Saturday morning/afternoon sales compared to last week.

The Martian has some very nice pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, and should be a film that plays well into the evening as well. It's outpacing Nobunaga Concerto by enough that it's likely to debut atop the box office, and appears strong enough to perhaps exceed ¥400 million over the weekend as well.

And based on this projected debut The Martian should have little trouble exceeding the ¥2 billion milestone, and I wouldn't rule out a total closer to ¥2.5 billion ($20 million+) or more. The rest of February is very weak, so with good reviews and poor competition, legs should be strong. After checking its box-office on BOM, Japan could deliver enough to push it over $400 million overseas.

I really thought Paddington might have been something the Japanese would like.

I thought it would have a stronger performance, but it's still doing fair business. And it has become Kino Film's biggest release to date, too.

>The Martian is off to a very good start, and will certainly take the weekend crown away from Nobunaga Concerto. It's well on its way to opening over ¥400 million ($3.5 million+), which would be 35/40% higher than Gravity, and should result it in finishing with ¥2.5 billion ($20 million+) with only fairly normal legs. I could see it approaching the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone, though, given its reception and weak February competition.

So with it possibly reaching ¥3 billion, and Nobunaga Concerto aiming for ¥3.5-4 billion, 2016 has already given us two potential top 10 contenders for the year (or top 15 at the very least).

>Code Geass: Akito the Exiled, Chapter 5 - To Beloved opened very well, selling through nearly 50% of its Saturday admissions. However, 72% of its limited theater count is represented above, so it won't be adding much more beyond these locations. Although, given the drops of many holdovers this weekend, if it can manage to hold decently tomorrow, it has a fair chance of breaking into the bottom of the Top 10.

>Very strong for The Martian. It definitely exceeded ¥400 million ($3.5 million) over the weekend thanks to its slight increase on Sunday, and may have even broke ¥450 million ($3.8/3.9 million), too. If it made ¥450 million, that'd give it a 49% increase over Gravity's opening weekend three years ago.

And after including the ~¥100 million it made on Friday, its 3-day total very likely exceeded ¥500 million, perhaps even ¥550 million ($4.7 million). Overall, a very strong start that can certainly be ruled as a breakout.

>Nobunaga Concerto holds steady in its third weekend and while being dethroned by The Martian, a third weekend near ¥400 million (after delivering two of the biggest January weekends of all-time) is very strong, regardless of the time of year.

>Black Mass looks like it dropped over 50%, which is pretty terrible for this market. Japanese audiences much prefer Johnny Depp in his more quirky roles, not the more recent ones he has taken on.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates shortly.

>The Martian finally landed in Japan and certainly made its impact felt on the box-office in its debut weekend. The opening far outpaces the likes of Gravity or other recent Hollywood space-adventures (Star Wars aside...), and even ranks among the best debuts in February's history based on estimates. I can only recall two or three February openers coming in higher. I'll provide a list of February opening weekends later today.

Anyway, if the estimate holds (or goes up!), The Martian is very likely to exceed ¥2.5 billion ($20 million+), and should be able to reach the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone. A ¥3 billion total generally results in a Top 15 spot on the yearly chart, so that's damn impressive to achieve this early in the year.

>Nobunaga Concerto holds steady, but had to relinquish its hold on the top spot in its third weekend. The breakout hit delivered the second biggest January opening weekend last month, followed by the third biggest January weekend ever in its second weekend; so to still be able to muster nearly a ¥400 million third weekend based on estimates is remarkable.

Its three week total is around ¥2.5 billion already, and it's on track to finish close to the ¥4 billion (~$35 million) mark. 2016 has only recently started, but Nobunaga Concerto is a strong contender to make the Top 10 films of the year.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to perform well, and having already outgrossed two of the prequels in the series and becoming the second live-action film since 2010 to reach the ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster milestone; it's just adding to an already incredible total at this point. It'll finish its run just above the ¥11 billion (~$95 million) mark, making it Disney's third highest-grossing film in the market.

>Code Geass: Akito the Exiled, Chapter 5 may only be a limited release (36 screens), and dropped a massive 55% on Sunday, but it still appears to have enough admissions to have debuted in the Top 10. In fact, depending on its ticket prices, it could possibly come in as high as seventh or eighth. Quite solid.

Yes, both Return of the King and The Two Towers had previews reported as part of their opening weekends (common for blockbusters from the early/mid-2000's), but I've never come across any articles noting how much they represented of its opening weekend.

The Hobbit films were major disappointments. In a franchise-to-franchise comparison, The Hobbit trilogy declined 81% compared to The Lord of the Rings trilogy in box-office revenue, and 84% in box-office admissions. The lowest grossing film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers with ¥7.9 billion, earned almost 60% more than the entire Hobbit trilogy.

Some of the individual film weekend grosses are being delayed this morning (running totals are updated, though), so I'm just going to post the weekend results in the old school format I use to post this week. It'll be posted soonish.

The Martian increased a bit over estimates (in gross; the admission estimate was dead on) and almost delivered a blockbuster level debut, and an excellent 3-day total.

>The Martian finally made it to Japan, delivering the fourth biggest opening weekend in February (first for an original film). Ridley Scott's live-action adpatation of Andy Weir's best selling novel earned an excellent ¥496,012,000 ($4.2 million) on 330,223 admissions across 814 screens. And after debuting on Friday, its 3-day total rose to an incredible ¥628,600,800 ($5.4 million) on 419,402 admissions.

Compared to other recent Hollywood space adventures, this debut (2-day only) bested Ridley's own Prometheus by 64%, Gravity also by 64%, and Interstellar by 156%(!).

The Martian is well on its way to achieving the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone on just average legs, but given its reception and poor upcoming competition, it could certainly make a play at ¥4 billion ($35 million) if it survives the seating/screen loss that March will bring.

>Nobunaga Concerto slips to second place after delivering two incredible weekends last month, earning a great ¥394,169,100 ($3.4 million) on 300,952 admissions in its third weekend of release.

And after three weeks, it's already exceeded ¥2.5 billion ($21 million) on 1.8 million admissions. It'll exceed the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone next weekend, and then begins its path to possibly exceeding ¥4 billion ($35 million).

Come the end of 2016, expect to see both Nobunaga Concerto and The Martian either in the yearly Top 10 or just outside the list. Two incredible performances by two films during what's usually a weak time for the box-office.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues its incredible run in its eighth week of release, now just shy of ¥10.5 billion ($87 million) with over 6.7 million admissions.

It's one of the films without an actual weekend gross but based on the estimate, it still has a good bit left to earn in the market and should end up finishing near ¥11.5 billion ($95 million) with 7.3/7.4 million admissions. This would make it the second highest (and second most attended) Star Wars film, behind Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and Disney's overall third highest-grossing film in the market.

>Code Geass: Akito the Exiled, Chapter 5 - To Beloved came in ninth place, despite playing on only 36 screens. The fifth chapter in the special Code Geass series grossed ¥43,099,100 ($369,000) on 36,162 admissions.

The majority of its weekend admissions came from advance ticket sales, which greatly decreased its avg. ticket price. Had it not sold so many early tickets, achieving the usual high avg. ticket price these anime films generally earn, it may have ranked in the Top 5.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Various 2016 Updates
Quite the exchange rate shake up this past week.

The Yen has strengthened against nearly all world currencies, and not only marginally. Versus the plummeting Dollar it has reached a 15-month high, up a significant 7.5% in just a matter of days.

What does this mean? Well, the Bank of Japan utilized monetary easing in 2014, reducing interest rates and boosting money to help stimulate the economy. This action gradually resulted in the Yen reaching a 12-year high against the dollar.

And this of course impacted the box-office (in terms of dollars earned), as some of you probably noticed that USD figures for films weren't particularly good over the past couple years (despite JPY and admission gains, some record levels). So unless the BOJ steps in later this week to halt the sudden gains, expect USD box office figures to appear noticeable stronger for the time being.

09 (07) ¥29,000,000 ($255,000), -38%, ¥5,360,000,000 ($45.1 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories (Toho) WK9
10 (--) ¥25,000,000 ($220,000), 0, ¥30,000,000 ($265,000), Steve Jobs (Toho-Towa) NEW

The Martian will win its second-consecutive weekend and if all goes well (and it should), it'll remain atop the box-office until the first weekend of March when the newest Doraemon opens.

The only opener that'll make any impact this weekend is the documentary Born in the EXILE, which will focus on the Sandaime J Brothers from the very popular band. It's a bit tricky to predict, barely being a wide release that appeals pretty exclusively to a fanbase, but judging by its pre-sales it should exceed ¥100 million over the weekend.

Then there are some limited openers that'll be competing for a spot in the Top 10. The first, Carol, has the best chance to make the top 10 due to its higher screen count (54 screens), recognizable star (Cate Blanchett), and strong reviews. The second, Steve Jobs, is less likely to make the top 10 since it's only playing on 39 screens. However, the bottom of the top 10 is becoming weak right now so it's doable.

As for the holdovers: Star Wars will come closer to the ¥11 billion milestone; Nobunaga Concerto will exceed the ¥3 billion hit milestone mark; and Saraba Abunai Deka should exceed the ¥1 billion milestone.

A very predictable weekend this week, as pretty much every film has fallen within expectations so far.

>The Martian repeats atop the box office in its second weekend, and should remain in the #1 position until Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan opens on March 5th.

>Born in the EXILE burned off a lot of demand on Friday (down over 40%) and given its lower theater count, it's likely to come in below Star Wars and Saraba Abunai Deka for the weekend. It's worth noting, though, that its average ticket price could be very high. If it's reasonably close to the top 3 in admissions, it could still have a chance in gross.

>Selector Destructed WIXOSS: The Movie did surprisingly well, but taking into consideration that nearly all of its theaters are represented above and assuming it drops tomorrow, it shouldn't make the weekend top 10. It may be close, however, so I wouldn't rule it out yet.
