I know it was wider but MI4 just missed Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie OW in admissions. Great to see that it topped Tintin's 3 week total in 3 days...impressive.

You may have misread, but M:I4 beat Kaibutsu-Kun's OW in admissions by 6,657. Kaibutsu-Kun beat M:I4's OW in gross though because of 3D.

Despite being close on opening weekend, M:I4 will finish well ahead of Kaibutsu-Kun, too.

Wild 7 (Warner Bros.) opened yesterday to about ¥40 million ($500,000) in 290 theaters (300-350 screens maybe).

That's probably good enough for a opening weekend above ¥100 million ($1.25 million), and a five day total of ¥200 million ($2.5 million). And with New Year, Wild 7 should become a solid ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) hit for WB.

This weekend marks a rare three day, holiday, weekend celebrating the Emperor's Birthday (Dec. 23rd).

Weekend Forecast
December 23/24-25, 2011

Image

1 Image Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Paramount) Week 2
2 Image Inazuma Eleven GO The Movie: The Ultimate Bonds Gryphon (Toho) Week 1
3 Image Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO: Movie War Mega Max (TOEI) Week 3
4 Image Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) Week 5
5 Image Isoroku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet (TOEI) Week 1
6 Image Friends: Naki on Monster Island (Toho) Week 2
7 Image K-ON! The Movie (Shochiku) Week 4
8 Image Wild 7 (Warner Bros.) Week 1
9 Image New Year's Eve (Warner Bros.) Week 1

10 Image Real Steel (Walt Disney) Week 3

M:I4 should have little trouble keeping first place away from Inazuma Eleven, and will likely stay on top for three more weeks (after this weekend). There are no openers next weekend, and I don't think any new releases until Always: Sunset on Third Street '64 on Jan. 21st can knock M:I4 out of first place.

Also, with Inazuma Eleven opening in 3D, that makes three Toho films in the Top 10 playing on 3D screens (Kaibutsu-Kun and Friends being the other two). Toho-Towa (Toho's subsidiary company) released The Adventures of Tintin in 3D, so I expect a big drop for it this weekend. It already lost over 100 screens last weekend and dropped 50%, very rare so early in a film's release in Japan, and another 3D film isn't going to do it any favors (possibly out of the Top 15).

Yep TinTin's drop was surprising this weekend. Even with more 3D movies I don't think we see such big drops in Japan, specially on 3rd weekend when the movie didn't open as big.

It really sucks for Tintin. I wonder if a Spring release would have been better.

Aaaand bumping this cuz I hate when Weekend Forecasts or Results occupy the bottom of a page.

One source that reports data from the usual locations is saying Inazuma Eleven GO saw a 10% increase over last year's Inazuma Eleven film on the same day.

If it turns out to be true, last year's film opened to 209,917 admissions for ¥256.51 million ($3.1 million) on 229 screens (191 3D, 28 2D), giving it first place for the day. So, this year's film may have done 225,000+ admissions for nearly ¥300 million ($3.8 million) which likely would have beaten M:I4 yesterday (M:I4 will still win the weekend, though).

Both Inazuma films opened on the 23rd, the Emperor's Birthday.

And with this success, Inazuma Eleven will probably become Toho's next annual franchise (similar to Doraemon or Detective Conan) released on every Emperor's Birthday.

Have you seen From Kokuriko Hill, Corpse? It's coming out here in January and I'm kind of interested in seeing it. What are the reviews like for it?

I haven't seen it, but I may next month.

Reviews were solid (4/5 or B grade), and the legs (even if Ghibli films commonly see 10x multipliers) were excellent suggesting it pleased the audience.

And I was away this weekend, and I have a busy day today, so I'll post the Weekend Rankings and some figures this evening or tonight. The openers didn't do much, but M:I4 has already more than tripled it's opening weekend (two day) gross as of Sunday.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Dec. 23-25, Emperor's Birthday
Since some weekend figures are coming in already, I'm going to hold off posting the Top 10 until tomorrow. But I am going to post M:I4 numbers.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Daily Breakdown: Day, Admissions / Gross

16th, 125,501 / ¥152,975,000 ($1.96 million)
17th, 220,179 / ¥283,819,150 ($3.63 million) +85%
18th, 217,571 / ¥289,042,100 ($3.70 million) +2%

Opening Weekend: 437,750 / ¥573,217,630 ($7,337,186)
3-Day Total: 563,251 / ¥726,265,585 ($9,296,199)

23rd, 175,707 / ¥228,937,500 ($2.93 million)
24th, 178,688 / ¥245,775,300 ($3.14 million) +7%
25th, 173,270 / ¥241,599,000 ($3.09 million) -2%

Second Weekend: 351,958 / ¥487,374,300 ($6.23 million) -15%
10-Day Total: 1,453,041 / ¥1,875,733,550 ($24.01 million)

M:I4 easily stayed on top it's second weekend, dropping only 15%, and is well on it's way to ¥5 billion ($60 million+) or more.

And this coming week/weekend will be it's biggest, too.

Big Movie Announcement today by distributor Toho!

Image
http://eiga.com/news/20111229/1/

Bayside Shakedown 4: The Final Chapter will be released in September 2012.

The Bayside Shakedown film series is the biggest local-live action franchise.

The last three films grossed 34.7 billion combined: Bayside Shakedown (1998) grossed 10.1 billion, Bayside Shakedown 2: Save the Rainbow Bridge (2003) grossed 17.35 billion ($155/160 million) (6th Highest Grossing Film of All-Time; 3rd Highest Grossing Live-Action Film), and Bayside Shakedown 3: Set the Guys Loose! (2010) grossed 7.31 billion ($88 million).

Final Installments generally see healthy boosts in admissions (revenue), and the fall release will be wide open for it to dominate, so an increase over BS3 shouldn't be difficult. I think Umizaru 4: Brave Hearts still has the edge and will be the #1 film of 2012, though.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Final Bayside Shakedown Announc
My New Top 5 Films of 2012 (Predictions):

1. Umizaru 4: Brave Hearts (Toho) ¥8-9 billion ($100 million+ contender)
2. Bayside Shakedown 4: The Final Chapter (Toho) ¥8-9 billion ($100 million+ contender)
3. The Amazing Spider-Man (Sony) ¥6-7 billion ($75/85 million)
4. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Paramount) ¥5-6 billion ($60/70 million)
5. Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) or Pokemon Best Wishes: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsmen (Toho) ¥4-5 billion ($50/60 million)

Wild Card: Brave (Walt Disney)

The entire Top 5 could consist of 4th installments (if you count The Amazing Spider-Man). :funny:

Also, remember that The Hobbit Part 1 will be a 2013 release.

Pretty interesting that Bayside Shakedown 4 is getting a fall release. I wonder if it has a better chance at 100m now with all the big releases parked in the summer.

When is The Dark Knight Rises coming out?

The fall should definitely help Bayside Shakedown 4, similar to how it helped Umizaru 3, Hero, and 20th Century Boys 3 dominate the charts for 6-8 weeks on top.

The Dark Knight Rises is scheduled for July 28th.

I wonder if Inception's success will help TDKR in Japan. Maybe this time it'll at least make $25+ million.

This is a really difficult weekend to project with no openers and half the Top 10 opening just last weekend, plus the first weekend of the New Year itself is the most unpredictable of the year, but I'll try. Some years everything increases by 40%, 50% or higher, other years the increases are 10-20% with a couple films decreasing.

M:I4 will easily stay on top and will be unchallenged until mid/late January. Kid/Family movies usually see the biggest increases when New Years fall on the Weekend, so Friends and Kaibutsu-Kun should play really well. The pure fanbase films, Inazuma Eleven and Kamen Rider will likely see drops (probably no more than 20/30% though), and the rest will either see minimal increases or decreases.

But really... the Top 10 this past weekend was so close (films 2-10 separated by less than $1 million), anything can happen with the ranking.

$60 or $70 million.

It should be near (maybe over) $40 million after this weekend.
