Weekend Estimates
November 26-27, 2011

Image

1 (-) Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) ¥581 million ($7.5 million) NEW
2 (1) A Ghost of a Chance (Toho) ¥171 million ($2.2 million), ¥3.238 billion ($41.7 million) Week 5
3 (2) Kaiji 2 (Toho) ¥89 million ($1.2 million), ¥1.341 billion ($17.3 million) Week 4
4 (4) Moneyball (Sony) ¥75 million ($1 million), ¥653 million ($8.4 million) Week 3
5 (3) The Three Musketeers (Gaga) ¥67 million ($865,000), ¥1.784 billion ($23.0 million) Week 5
6 (5) Inochi no Antoki (Shochiku) ¥59 million ($760,000), ¥281 million ($3.6 million) Week 2
7 (-) Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros.) ¥54 million ($700,000) NEW
8 (6) Suite Pretty Cure? Take Back! The Heart Binding Miracles Melody? (TOEI) ¥36 million ($465,000), ¥797 million ($10.3 million) Week 5
9 (8) Contagion (Warner Bros.) ¥28 million ($360,000), ¥297 million ($3.8 million) Week 3
10 (7) Immortals (Toho-Towa) ¥27 million ($350,000), ¥375 million ($4.8 million) Week 3

Slightly disappointing that Kaibutsu-Kun failed to break ¥600 million, but it's a great opening nonetheless. The opening would rank 2nd best out of all local 2011 releases, behind Gantz' ¥592 million, and 4th best opening overall from 2011. This opening should allow Kaibutsu-Kun to finish near ¥3.5 billion ($45 million) with a slight chance at ¥4 billion ($50 million).

A Ghost of a Chance however will definitely finish over ¥3.5 billion now after an excellent fifth weekend. ¥4 billion or more looks more and more likely.

The Three Musketeers keeps pulling in audiences in it's fifth week. Japan became it's biggest overall market last weekend, so the only goal left is for the film to reach the ¥2 billion milestone ($25 million). That shouldn't be too difficult given where it's at now.

It couldn't have been worse for Happy Feet Two. Below even the most pessimistic predictions prior to Saturday. ¥300 million ($4 million) looks to be the best it'll manage, down over 75% from the original's ¥1.45 billion total. And taking 3D sales into account, it probably will lose 80% or more of the original's audience. Yikes. Ice Age 3 all over again, which also plummeted 80% from it's predecessor.

Arthur Christmas barely missed the Top 10, opening to ¥25 million ($320,000).

Key:
Italics = Film is still in release and being tracked.
BOLD = Film ended it's run with it's final gross and admissions released.
BLUE Highlight = New Entry

Note - If a film is not in bold and isn't in italics (e.g. From Kokuriko Hill, Cars 2), it means tracking for that film ended and the total listed isn't final yet. The totals for those films are likely to increase <1% when the final total is released.

Any idea why Sucker Punch didn't do better in Japan?

I couldn't say for sure, but my best guess would be the unknown source material and Zack Snyder. Most Japanese choose what movies they go see carefully (the avg. person sees one movie in theaters a year), and films based on a unknown source material, original films, films with no big celebs, and/or films by directors without any big hits really struggle.

It also didn't receive that many screens and opened shortly before Golden Week when there are usually several wide, bigger releases for audiences to enjoy over the Holidays.

Interesting - thanks for the insight. It just struck me as the type of movie that might be embraced well there.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Nov. 26-27 (Weekend Results)
Not only does November mark the end of the Box Office Year, but also multiple medias (manga sales, music sales, etc), so I'll post some charts over the next week to add a little variety here. Manga first.

And it's still BO related (sort of), because many, many films released each year in Japan originated in manga form.

Top Selling Manga in Japan: 2011

Rank, Title, Author, Copies Sold, Publisher

By Series:
1 One Piece Eiichiro Oda 37,996,373 Shueisha
2 Naruto Masashi Kishimoto 6,874,840 Shueisha
3 Blue Exorcist Kazue Katō 5,223,712 Shueisha
4 Fairy Tail Hiro Mashima 4,701,596 Kodansha
5 Toriko Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro 4,665,634 Shueisha
6 Gintama Hideaki Sorachi 4,415,491 Shueisha
7 Bakuman. Story: Tsugumi Ohba
Art: Takeshi Obata 4,399,938 Shueisha
8 Bleach Tite Kubo 4,187,258 Shueisha
9 Kimi ni Todoke Karuho Shiina 4,109,481 Shueisha
10 Gantz Hiroya Oku 4,056,981 Shueisha

By Volume:
1 One Piece #61 Eiichiro Oda 3,382,588 Shueisha
2 One Piece #62 Eiichiro Oda 3,207,568 Shueisha
3 One Piece #63 Eiichiro Oda 3,073,175 Shueisha
4 One Piece #64 Eiichiro Oda 2,652,700 Shueisha
5 Naruto #54 Masashi Kishimoto 1,229,170 Shueisha
6 Kimi ni Todoke #13 Karuho Shiina 1,228,692 Shueisha
7 Kimi ni Todoke #14 Karuho Shiina 1,189,589 Shueisha
8 Fullmetal Alchemist #27 Hiromu Arakawa 1,144,295 Square Enix
9 Naruto #55 Masashi Kishimoto 1,131,672 Shueisha
10 Naruto #57 Masashi Kishimoto 1,090,567 Shueisha

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... eries/2011

Much like how distributor Toho dominates the Japan Box Office, publisher Shueisha dominates the Manga field.

One Piece breaks it's own record for yearly sales, beating it's 2010 total of 32,343,809 copies sold. I think lifetime copies sold surpassed 250 million this year, too. A new One Piece film was announced last month, release TBA. In 2009/2010, One Piece Film Strong World opened to a record setting PSA for a wide release ($62,000), grossing over 1 billion yen (820,000 admissions) in two days, and went on to gross 4.8 billion yen ($58 million).

The two Gantz live-action films performed very well at the BO in 2011 (see the BO charts above), grossing 6.25 billion yen ($78 million) combined.

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos also performed fairly well in a busy Summer.

And 2012 will see adaptations of Blue Exorcist and Fairy Tail (firsts for both), having gained much popularity over the past couple years, as well as the usual Naruto, Bleach, etc. film releases.

Weekend Forecast
December 3-4, 2011

ImageImage

1 (1) Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) Week 2
2 (-) K-ON! The Movie (Shochiku) NEW
3 (-) The Adventures of Tintin (Toho-Towa) NEW

4 (2) A Ghost of a Chance (Toho) Week 6
5 (-) Railways 2 (Shochiku) NEW
6 (4) Moneyball (Sony) Week 4
7 (3) Kaiji 2 (Toho) Week 5
8 (5) The Three Musketeers (Gaga) Week 6
9 (6) Inochi no Antoki (Shochiku) Week 3
10 (7) Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros.) Week 2

Kaibutsu-Kun should hold onto first place in gross, but there's a chance it ranks second in admissions behind K-ON!.

K-ON! is only the second film this year (the 2011 calendar year) to get the midnight showing treatment (Harry Potter being the only other), and it's going to show when the figures are released. It's screen count will probably be 150-200 (150 is considered wide, so it'll be above that), but it's PSA will surely topple $20,000 or even $30,000.

Tintin opened on Thursday, so it's weekend will be deflated and shouldn't be used to determine the long-term run of the film. Reports of opening day business were solid, but it appears it'll have to rely heavily on WOM to become a big hit ($25m+).

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Dec. 3-4 (Weekend Forecast)
While it hasn't been officially announced yet by Toho or the Pokemon Company, merchandise for the 15th Pokemon Movie has been released confirming the movie's 2012 release featuring the Legendary Pokemon: Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion (based on The Musketeers), the Ice/Dragon, Kyurem, as well as a mystery Pokemon believed to be the unreleased Keldeo (last member of the Musketeer quartet).

Image

The plot of the film is still unknown, but the Pokedex entry for the "Muskedeer" Legendary Pokemon states: "The group has challenged humans in legends in order to protect other Pokémon from losing their homes to human expansion." A plot, or sub-plot, will likely involve this.

Movie announcements for the Pokemon films usually occur in Mid/Late December, so more details will be known soon. Every Pokemon film has been released mid-July, and 2012 should be no different with a release on July 14 or 21.

Some Saturday Data

Kaibutsu-Kun will easily claim a second week in first place with 275-300,000 admissions; 375-400 million yen (about $5 million), down 30-35%.

The Adventures of Tintin and K-ON!: The Movie are in a close race for second and third, both aiming for 150-200,000 admissions; 225-250 million yen (about $3 million) this weekend.

That's unspectacular number for Tintin. Corpse was it supposed to open to these numbers or it ended at the lower end of expectations?

It's a very slow start and will need excellent WOM to recover. What makes the opening even worse was the screen count of 885 (third highest out of all of 2011's releases).

Weekend Ranking
December 3-4, 2011

Image

1 (1) Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) Week 2
2 (-) K-ON! The Movie (Shochiku) NEW
3 (-) The Adventures of Tintin (Toho-Towa) NEW

4 (2) A Ghost of a Chance (Toho) Week 6
5 (-) Railways 2 (Shochiku) NEW
6 (3) Kaiji 2 (Toho) Week 5
7 (4) Moneyball (Sony) Week 4
8 (5) Inochi no Antoki (Shochiku) Week 3
9 (7) Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros.) Week 2
10 (8) Suite Pretty Cure? Take Back! The Heart Binding Miracles Melody? (TOEI) Week 6

Kaibutsu-Kun tops ¥1 billion ($13 million) after 9 days in release.

K-ON! The Movie opened with a highly impressive 237,817 admissions for ¥316,310,450 ($4.1 million) on only 137 screens. That's a huge 2-Day PSA of ¥2,308,835 (about $30,000), completely trumping Spielberg's Tintin.

Off to a very slow start was The Adventures of Tintin. Opening very wide on 885 screens, it only managed 148,697 admissions for ¥219,508,750 ($2.8 million) over the weekend. It's PSA barely broke $3,000. Only the best of WOM will help it recover from this disappointing debut.

Railways 2 opened on 211 screens to 82,707 admissions for ¥89,878,400 ($1.2 million).

Fantastic for K-On! I'm surprised (although I shouldn't be) it did so well.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Dec. 3-4 (Weekend Ranking)
Based on comparisons such as One Piece Film Strong World, K-ON! will be naturally frontloaded but will still achieve a multiplier of 4-5 so ¥1.5 billion (about $20 million) looks doable.

And even with a poor debut, it's too early to rule out Tintin doing well in the weeks to come. There are many examples of films with high expectations opening below them (a couple recent being Avatar and Kokuriko Hill), but finishing with respectable totals or better. ¥1.5 billion is probably the best it can manage, or ¥2 billion if WOM is excellent. Either way, it has to be below expectations given the studios confidence in the film by releasing it so wide.

I forgot to consider Indiana and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as a possible reason Tintin has started out so poorly, too. Crystal Skull had a big opening in Japan, but poor WOM resulted in very weak legs. Perhaps the dislike for Spielberg's last had an effect on his latest.

PREVIOUS YEARS

With only A Ghost of a Chance, Kaiji 2, and The Three Musketeers being tracked now among 2011 BO releases, the 2011 charts are nearing their final figures. The final figures for films not in BOLD or Italics should be available in January. I'll also be adjusting the US$ grosses then since they're mostly estimates at the time tracking become unavailable.

Excellent second weekend for Kaibutsu-Kun. It's skewing pretty young, so it's weekdays this time of year are quite weak. But it's making up for it on the weekend and is still targeting ¥3 billion ($40 million).

Big debut for K-ON! playing on just 137 screens, 15% of the screens Tintin opened on this weekend. It's PSA was only $217 shy of $30,000.

Not so good for The Adventures of Tintin. It's actually the 4th widest release of all time, playing on 895 screens, but only managed a little over $4 million since it's Thursday release. Great WOM is the only thing that could save it from this poor debut.

A Ghost of a Chance continues to hold strong breaking ¥3.5 billion ($45 million) after six weeks. A gross over ¥4 billion ($50 million) is locked in a couple weeks.

Decent opening for Railways 2, on par with it's predecessor.

Happy Feet Two is one of the biggest bombs of the year. Even my low-ball projection of ¥300/400 million is too high now. It's only going to finish with ¥200-250 million (under $3 million), down 85% or more from the original's total ( ).

The Three Musketeers lost most of it's screens this weekend to make way for Tintin (probably not the best decision by theaters now), which explains it's harsh drop this weekend. A final gross of ¥2 billion ($25 million) still looks reasonable though.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Dec. 3-4 (Weekend Results)
The teaser for the 2012 Pokemon Movie (15) was shown this morning on the Japanese variety show Oha Suta. The release date is set for July. The plot and additional details (downloadable content, etc.) will be revealed on the 17th.

The title for the next film is Kyurem VS. The Sacred Swordsmen.

July 2012 is looking really strong with Umizaru 4: Brave Hearts, Brave, Pokemon Best Wishes: Kyurem VS. The Sacred Swordsmen, and The Amazing Spider-Man (June 30th, but whatever).

My early predictions would be:

Umizaru 4: ¥8-9 billion ($100-115 million) #1 Film of 2012
The Amazing Spider-Man: ¥6-7 billion ($75-85 million)
Pokemon 15: ¥4-5 billion ($50-60 million)
Brave: ¥3-4 billion ($40-50 million)

Weekend Forecast
December 10-11, 2011

1 (-) Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO: Movie War Mega Max (TOEI) NEW!
2 (1) Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) Week 3
3 (-) Tale of Genji (Toho) NEW!
4 (-) Real Steel (Walt Disney) NEW!

5 (2) K-ON! The Movie (Shochiku) Week 2
6 (3) The Adventures of Tintin (Toho-Towa) Week 2
7 (4) A Ghost of a Chance (Toho) Week 7
8 (5) Railways 2 (Shochiku) Week 2
9 (6) Kaiji 2 (Toho) Week 6
10 (7) Moneyball (Sony) Week 5

The Kamen Rider films practically always open to ¥300-400 million (around $4 million), so should be no different again this quarter. Though it could rank 2nd If Kaibutsu-Kun has another good hold (-20/25%) to claim it's third consecutive week on top.

Tale of Genji might rank below Real Steel over the weekend, but with the latter opening on a Friday, I'm giving the slight edge to Genji. Both films should do ¥200 million+ ($2.5m+).

Nothing else is too noteworthy except for A Ghost of a Chance continuing to increase it's already impressive total and may break 3 million admissions and ¥3.8 billion ($48 million).

Saturday Data

Openers,

Kamen Rider is targeting 300,000 admissions for the weekend, performing 32.7% behind Kaibutsu-Kun's opening weekend of 431,093 admissions. 300,000 admissions = ~ ¥350 million ($4.5 million).

Real Steel is overperforming on course to break 150,000 admissions for the weekend, performing 3.3% ahead of Tintin's opening weekend of 148,697 admissions. 150,000+ admissions = ~ ¥225 million ($2.9 million).

Tale of Genji is off to a slow start aiming for just over 100,000 admissions for the weekend, performing 74.6% behind Kaibutsu-Kun's opening weekend of 431,093 admissions. 100,000+ admissions = ~ ¥130 million ($1.7 million).

Select Holdovers,

Last Week's Openers K-ON! and The Adventures of Tintin are down 55% (not surprising given K-ON!'s fanbase, but concerning for Tintin). K-ON! is targeting 110,000+ admissions = ~ ¥150 million ($1.9 million); Tintin targeting 75,000 admissions = ~ ¥110 million ($1.4 million).

Kaibutsu-Kun is down just 34.5% in it's third weekend, giving it 210,000+ admissions = ~ ¥300 million ($3.8 million).

Soooo..... the Weekend Ranking should go:

1 (-) Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO: Movie War Mega Max (TOEI) NEW!
2 (1) Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) Week 3
3 (-) Real Steel (Walt Disney) NEW!
4 (2) K-ON! The Movie (Shochiku) Week 2
5 (-) Tale of Genji (Toho) NEW!
6 (3) The Adventures of Tintin (Toho-Towa) Week 2
