Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (01/08-09); Charts Update
I'm beginning to work the Weekly Shonen Jump Box Office History chart today, but I'd like some help from some of you if you can.

I need a list of every film based on a Weekly Shonen Jump title. I'm going to begin with animated films only (way more of them), but any live-action films posted would be helpful, too. It's not hard to get a decent list going by simple using Google, but most search results (such as Wikipedia) are pretty scattered in their lists and selective, it seems. Some of you may know of a site that doesn't pop up with a simple search that has a better list of films. Feel free to post the link, or post the list yourselves.

I'll begin working on it today, working backward by year, and check back here periodically for any updates. Don't want anyone to go out of their way to help, but any help would be appreciated since this is a pretty big project.

One way to search WSJ movies is in MAL.
Though it doesn't tell if the shounen movie is from WSJ or any other shounen magazines.
But it can tell you the general idea.

I've checked the comments in Khara's Twitter announcement, and most of them are similar in support and acceptance.
Of course there are some haters and stuff, but generally comments are like:
"It's the right choise"
"I'll go watch it whenever it gets released"
"after waiting so long, a bit more wont be a problem"

I do also think it is the right decision, in the current situation.

Thanks for the link ren0080.

I'm about to post the preliminary list. On this list, you'll find the follow:

>To make the list, it must have originated in WSJ (or manga form), not as a video game or anime before being receiving a manga series. This is rare, so very few exceptions were made.
>All films released since 2010 should be included. Not guaranteed, could have easily missed a few (single-films that didn't gross too much are easy to miss), just let me know if anything of the last 10/11 years are missing.
>All films in a franchise that has 3 or more films regardless of year of release (One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, Rurouni Kenshin, Gintama). I already have lists for most of these, so easy inclusions.
>Live-Action films (marked with LA) are going to be included so I won't have to go back and do this all over again for them.

Over the week, I'll work on including the non-franchise films released from 1980-2009.

And again, please let me know if I missed anything that falls in the categories I listed above, or if I may have accidentally included a non-WSJ film (I had Fullmetal Alchemist on there at one point, before realizing it's not a WSJ title).

Nice Idea !
Just thinking about what the box office of 20 Century Boys live-action films (even it's not a jump manga) ! Last chapter released almost 12 years ago and couldn't find it...

Good to see film like Bakuman did great. And remember OP : Strong World had few records when it released.

One obvious miss to the list is Rookies the Movie: Graduation with 8.55 billion yen.

Thanks ultimatememax ! It did great then ! I've not seen the last one yet but I was impressed by the quality of chapter 1 for a japanese movie... because yeah, it's really different from a occidental one. (acting, cultural codes and composition...)

Nice. A few corrections though: Gantz, Tokyo Ghoul and Terra Formars are not WSJ, they are Young Jump, like Kingdom.

Also from a glance it's definitely missing Rookies (live action), this was the highest grossing WSJ movie before DS with over 8bln yen IIRC. Missing Nisekoi as well although that one bombed if I'm not mistaken.

I actually watch Rookies in cinema and despite knowing nothing about this other than that it's a new #1 weekend box office in Japan, replacing Avatar (I don't even know it made from manga) I cry a lot!

And now Jujutsu Kaisen has exceeded 20 million copies in circulation. Just announced today by Shueisha, so expect a huge week in sales for the series with Vol. 14's debut (really curious on this one) and the backlog likely being restocked again. Here is its reported circulation number timeline:

600,000 - Dec. 2018
1.1 million - Feb. 2019
2.0 million - June 2019
2.5 million - Nov. 2019
4.5 million - May 2020
6.8 million - Sept. 2020
10.0 million - Oct. 2020
15.0 million - Dec. 2020
20.0 million - Jan. 2021

This is a major exponential increase in sales. Over 15 million in just 8 months (May 2020-Jan. 2021), and 13.2 million in just 4 months (Sept. 2020-Jan. 2021). And a 5 million month (Dec. 2020-Jan. 2021) might only be the second time a manga has achieved this since Oricon's sales chart began. Unless One Piece achieved some 5 million months back in 2009-2012, Demon Slayer is the only other series to have achieved this feat to my knowledge.

It's very reminiscent of what started to happen with Demon Slayer in late-2019.

One Piece sold 23 366 030 during the first semester of 2011, so an average of 3 894 000 for each month, considering months are uneven between them and sales inferior to circulation, I'd say One piece definitely achieved the feat. Oricon numbers for Jujutsu Kaisen in 2021 : 4 469 056 in seven weeks.

JjK has sold 12M~ right now I guess and with the reprint will sell millions of copies for the next weeks ! I wonder if it can becomes the second best seller in term of ratio copies/volume... now that One Piece is more like 2M/volume. For 2021 Kimetsu should stay at the top but for 2022 the "battle" will be very exciting. ^^

It's 13 000 000 (rounded up to the closest 5 000). The manga market is so active these days that I'll never refute someone saying "in 2021, Jujutsu Kaisen will have a better copies sold/new volumes ratio than One Piece." One piece is still a monster seller but if the frenzy continues, this is indeed a possibility.

Demon Slayer : the Manga - Record of Slayed Records List

*Oricon started their manga data service in 2008 and One piece #01 was published at the end of 1997, so they don't have data for One piece volumes published before 2008. However, the sentence "at one point, each and every volume of One piece sold 3 000 000" is true.

Here is the updated list of records for the manga, with the numbers from week #07 of 2021 (from January 04th, 2021 to January 10th, 2021).
5 000 000 in 38 days, Kimetsu no Yaiba #23 keeps destroying records, Kimetsu no Yaiba #01 can begin to sweat^^. The series ended for the number of apparitions and consecutive apparitions for a volume, only volumes #01 and #23 were present in the top 50 oricon ranking this week.

Guess KnY will continues the serie for number of apparitions with the next weekly Oricon top... Now it has to reach 6M goal. ^^'
I still don't feel like Jjk will pass One Piece scores but as you said it is a possibility. From WSJ, I think Chainsaw-Man has more potential to do it but depending on the schedules (anime, part 2, ...) so it's too soon to tell and surely not for this year. And I 'm focusing on the 2 powerfull Jump+ app manga(s) right now because these have a really great potential to be hits !

This year is a lot more interesting with a lot of participants that are fighting for the number 1 spot.
The years before, One Piece just reigns supreme and 2019 was a weird year we have two winners from different sources. Then 2020 comes and KnY just stole the show (along with Kingdom dethroning OP) lmao.
So, in 2021, it's interesting to see these different titles showing up and aiming for the top spot, unlike the past years where there's already a definitive winner.

I always forget that Rookies was originally a WSJ title as well. The TV drama series based on it was a ratings hit though, which is what propelled the film's box office since it concluded the TV drama series in theaters. I remember that it broke the advance ticket sales record at the time, and still to this day, it holds the opening weekend record in admissions for a live-action Japanese film (second in gross to Bayside Shakedown 2).

And for just more proof that a popular soundtrack or hit song can drive a film at the box office, "Kiseki" by Greeeen, the theme used for the Rookies series and movie, was a major hit back in 2008, reaching #1 on the charts. It still appears once in awhile on charts to this day. It was the most downloaded Japanese single ever back then, not sure if it still holds that record or not though.

Thank you. I'll remove them, and add Rookies, later today or over the weekend as I work on films between 2000-2009.

I'll look up Nisekoi. As long as it either opened above ¥100 million or grossed over ¥1 billion, I'll include it (and any other film).

And continue to mention any films I may have missed, guys! Anything before 2000 in particular would be helpful, just remember that I already have all the Dragon Ball films on the list. I'm not expecting too many additions from before 2000, but there are surely some that would make it.

I'm about to post the preliminary list. On this list, you'll find the follow:

>All films released since 2010 should be included. Not guaranteed, could have easily missed a few (single-films that didn't gross too much are easy to miss), just let me know if anything of the last 10/11 years are missing.

Thank you!

Unfortunately most of those films didn't open above ¥100 million or gross over ¥1 billion. Doesn't mean they were all bombs or disappointments though, since many were limited or nearly limited releases, and expectations were likely not set that high. Rather, most of the time they're released in and around Tokyo and just targeting the diehard fans.

Of the films you mentioned, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K opened above ¥100 million and will be added to the openings list. And The Disastrous Life of Saiki K legged it out to reach exactly ¥1 billion, so it also made the totals list.

I'll have a chart update posted in the next hour or so with the corrections and additions, along with any films I come across released between 2005-2009. But keep any film mentions coming. It's a big help, and I really appreciate the help on this.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (01/08-09); Charts Update
And having done hours of research on this project this week, I've noticed a couple things:

First: Older WSJ series' from the 70s/80s would receive "film" adaptations (though many were in the 30-60 minute running time frame), but they were typically released on TV versus theatrically. We'll probably figure out when it became more common for WSJ properties to receive theatrical releases, but I wonder if a specific franchise or individual film is what caused it to become the norm beginning in the early 2000s.

Second: I'm surprised some more recent series, such as Haikyuu! or Food Wars, never got the theatrical treatment (at least yet...) considering their popularity, especially Haikyuu!. Haikyuu! had some complication films that were released in very few theaters, but it never received an actual film project.

10 (10) ¥x18,000,000 ($175,000), -38%, ¥255,000,000 ($2.5 million), Peninsula (Gaga) WK3

There are more theaters that have to close before 8PM this weekend than last weekend, due to the state of emergency expanding to seven additional prefectures, so the forecast could carry a degree of inaccuracy.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will become just the seventh film ever recorded to have a 14th weekend above ¥100 million, and if the actual is close to the estimate, it'll achieve the fourth biggest 14th weekend ever recorded. I say recorded now because at this point it's likely that Titanic ranks high on these weekend charts, but its weekends are unknown.

This was also supposed to have been Demon Slayer's last weekend at #1, but with Evangelion being delayed from next weekend, it will likely get a 15th weekend at #1 next week. The last weekend of January has three wide releases, so predicting if it'll get a 16th weekend or more will have to wait until we see how things are then.

So DS will overtake Gintama in both gross and admissions this week then? Also are these drops higher than usual because of restrictions?

Yes, it's very likely.

As for the drops, they're relatively fine/good holds if they happen, just perhaps a little higher than normal. January and February are two of the weaker months of the year, so nothing unusual is really happening yet.
