Frozen should do very well. I'm expecting $30-40 million right now. It might also become a contender for highest-grossing Hollywood film this year since their slate is very, very weak.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a candidate for highest-grossing Hollywood film this year given the weak competition, but I believe it's more likely that Transformers: Age of Extinction and/or Resident Evil 6 beats it. Godzilla is also a possible candidate.

If Gravity would win Best Picture at the Oscars, then it would certainly become a major contender. It's already looking at $30-35 million, so a win could potentially push it to $50 million (a number I don't think any other film from Hollywood will reach this year).

>The Eternal Zero is down... 5.1% from last Saturday. The difference between Toho Cinemas drop and the actual weekend drop last weekend was only 1.4%, so it's looking incredibly strong again. A 5th weekend over ¥400 million (~$4 million) would be insane. ¥10 billion (~$100 million), while a long stretch, will come within range.

The film is really beginning to behave like Avatar did post-New Year by having several straight weekends (in the ¥500 million range) staying relatively flat.

If The Eternal Zero would find a way to reach ¥10 billion (~$100 million), it would be the third domestic live-action film to ever gross so much, and the first non-based on existing visual media (TV, etc). And only two domestic live-action films to have even grossed over ¥10 billion were the first two Bayside Shakedown films in 1998/2003.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates [01/18-19]
Now that holidays have been over for more than a week, we should be getting weekend estimates on a weekly basis again. :)

Weekend Estimates [01/18-19]

06 (03) ¥72 million ($690,000), -55%, The Escape Plan (Gaga), Week 2

13 (09) ¥24 million ($230,000), -54%, Hunter X Hunter: The Final Mission (Toho), Week 4
14 (11) ¥15 million ($145,000), -65%, Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Gaim & Wizard (Toei), Week 6
15 (12) ¥15 million ($140,000), -60%, Walking with Dinosaurs (Fox), Week 5

Sunday wasn't as strong as last week, but there were still some strong showings.

>The Eternal Zero is estimated to be at ¥5.1/¥5.2 billion ($50 million) now.

>Black Butler meets expectations for Warner Bros. and has a chance of being a ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) candidate.

>Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters does practically the same numbers as last year's film. It also happened to be the second most-frontloaded wide-release last year, so let's see if it can improve on it's holds this year.

>Ender's Game disappoints as predicted. An unknown property featuring an unknown cast (Harrison Ford aside) targeting younger people didn't have any shot here.

Since the Top 10 distributors represent about 85% of the overall market, 2013 is looking at an alright increase of 2-5% over 2012. And admissions are going to be well above 2012's, too, since they were tracking more than 10% ahead of 2012 at the end of October. The USD total however will be taking a drop since the Yen has strengthened to a 4/5 year high versus the Dollar.

Ouch. That's not good for Escape Plan. I think we can wave bye bye to $5-$6m total.

Weekend Ranking [01/18-19]

01 (01) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 5
02 (02) Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 2
03 (--) Black Butler (Warner Bros.) NEW
04 (--) Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! Farewell Our Eternal Friends (Toei) NEW

05 (04) Gravity (Warner Bros.) Week 6
06 (03) The Escape Plan (Gaga) Week 2
07 (06) Judge! (Shochiku) Week 2
08 (05) Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Toho) Week 7
09 (--) Ender's Game (Disney) NEW
10 (07) The Liar and His Lover (Toho) Week 6

>The Eternal Zero tops the box-office once again and did better than estimates, dropping only 14% in it's 5th weekend earning ¥400,547,000 ($3.9 million) and 308,257 admissions. This brings it's new cume to ¥5.15 billion ($49.7 million) with 4.19 million admissions after 30 days in release. It is barely dropping on a weekly basis.

Weekly Breakdown:
1st Weekend: ¥542 million ($5.3 million)
2nd Weekend: ¥372 million ($3.6 million), -31%, ¥1.61 billion ($15.5 million)
3rd Weekend: ¥532 million ($5.2 million), +43%, ¥3.20 billion ($30.9 million)
4th Weekend: ¥468 million ($4.5 million), -12%, ¥4.16 billion ($40.2 million)
5th Weekend: ¥401 million ($3.9 million), -14%, ¥5.15 billion ($49.7 million)

>Black Butler opened on 327 screens to ¥145,573,100 ($1.4 million) and 116,253 admissions. Not a great start, but one that Warner Bros. should be fairly satisfied with about. I doubt it reaches the ¥1 billion milestone, but ¥800-900 million ($8/9 million) is acceptable and means they've succeeded in bringing out more than who buys manga volumes (around 400-500,000).

>Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters earned ¥133,991,700 ($1.3 million) and 133,243 admissions on 304 screens. The opening is down 2.1% compared to last year's film, but up 3.3% on the film before that.

>Ender's Game barely makes the Top 10 in it's debut, taking in a measly ¥68,989,350 ($663,000) and 53,748 admissions on 474 screens. The pretty wide release shows Disney tried, but the film was never going to do anything in Japan. With the major failures of all these imported young adult book adaptations (Twilight, The Hunger Games, Beautiful Creatures, and now Ender's Game), I wonder if they'll eventually go the way of recent imported-animated films (aka not being picked up at all for distribution).

Bit of a blunt title for Lee Daniels' film. Damn.

Ha. Not the same film.

Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) is a Japanese manga/anime about a twelve-year-old head of a noble family and toy manufacture who makes a pact with a Demon, also his butler, to avenge his parents. "Kuro" means "Black" in Japanese, but is often used to describe demons and such, too.

19. ¥5.17 billion ($50 million) / 4.2 million - The Eternal Zero (2013) [30 days in release]

*Based on a TV show, anime and/or manga.

At its current pace, and having 3rd-5th weekends bigger than most of the films above it, The Eternal Zero is looking at a projected total of ¥7.5-¥8.5 billion ($72-82 million) and 6-7 million admissions. If it gets to ¥7.5 billion (pretty likely), only 3 films not based on a TV show, anime or manga will be above it. And if it can reach ¥8.5 billion+, then just 2. This range will also result in an incredible multiplier of 13.8-15.7.

It would be hilarious if Lee Daniel's The Butler was name Black Butler in foreign countries.

Ouch. That's not good for Escape Plan. I think we can wave bye bye to $5-$6m total.

It's almost at $5 million (¥470 million) already, a multiplier of 2.94 already after two weeks. It should reach about ¥750 million ($7.2 million).

Remember, weekdays in Japan are just as strong as weekends during most of the year. And for films that skew older or towards female (The Escape Plan playing almost exclusively to the 40+ crowd), weekdays can often be MUCH stronger due to discounts through the week.

So...The Eternal Zero was up 1.8% yesterday over last Wednesday, earning ~¥90 million ($865,000) in its 33rd day of release.

Image
The Eternal Zero [Weekly Breakdown]
Week (Dates): Weekly Gross ¥($), % change from last week, Total Gross ¥($), % change from last week
(12/21-27): ¥1.24 billion ($12.0 million)
(12/28-01/03): ¥1.43 billion ($13.8 million), +15.3%, ¥2.67 billion ($25.8 million), +115.3% *New Year*
(01/04-10): ¥1.02 billion ($9.9 million), -28.7%, ¥3.69 billion ($35.7 million), +38.2%
(01/11-17): ¥1.08 billion ($10.4 million), +5.9%, ¥4.77 billion ($46.1 million), +29.3%
(01/18-): ¥401 million ($3.9 million) so far without including Monday-Friday (01/20-24), but with the estimated Wednesday number, the 5th week is already near ¥500 million ($4.8 million) with 4 days unaccounted for right now.

It will easily claim the top spot again this upcoming weekend, giving it a 6th-consecutive week on top, and I doubt anything opening in its 7th-weekend (which includes Thor: The Dark World, American Hustle, Wolf on Wall Street, I Want to Hold, among others) will relinquish its hold on the top spot either.

And if it maintains this kind of strength, and with most of February looking pretty weak, it's not impossible (though very difficult) for it to be on top until March. 10 or 11-consecutive weeks in 1st place would be crazy. If The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug doesn't oust it the Feb.28-Mar.01 weekend, then Doraemon finally will the following weekend.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Live-Action 'Attack on Titan' Ad Previ
On Friday, the Daily Sports newspaper posted the first photograph from the Subaru Forester commercial created in collaboration with next year's live-action Attack on Titan film. The commercial will debut during this evening's Kinyōbi Road Show! (Friday Road Show!) movie airing.

Shinji Higuchi, the 48-year-old director of the live-action Attack on Titan film and The Floating Castle (Nobō no Shiro), also worked on the commercial. The commercial features three Titan giants, including one regular Titan and one female Titan played by stunt people and enhanced with computer graphics. It took four hours to apply the female Titan's makeup.

In addition, the commercial filmed a model of a colossal Titan's upper body. The model was about two meters (about six feet) tall and required seven people to operate.

In the commercial, a Forester sports utility vehicle "skillfully dodges" the attacking Titans. The 30-second commercial costs several tens of millions of yen (several hundred thousand U.S. dollars). NTV's morning television program Zip! aired a segment (pictured above) on the commercial.

Principal photography on the live-action film itself has yet to begin, and the staff has not decided if the Titans in the film will appear as they do in the commercial. Still, Higuchi was grateful for this "welcome opportunity" to create a preview of what is to come.

The full commercial is going to air tonight. And as the last bit says, filming hasn't begun yet and is supposed to start this Summer with a release date in 2015.

Attack on Titan has become the biggest thing in Japanese pop culture over the past year with the manga selling almost 16 million copies in 2013 alone (and 30 million since it began in September of 2009), and the anime adaptation won several awards last year. The final episode even aired in theaters before airing on TV. Not to mention action-figures that recently sold for $1,150 selling out in less than 24 hours earlier this month.

The live-action film will be directed by Shinji Higuchi. He directed The Sinking of Japan and The Floating Castle, both notable hits in Japan. But more importantly, he has worked on storyboards and visual effects for Godzilla, Evangelion and Gamera, so he certainly knows how to portray humanity and giants on screen together.

Handling the script is Yusuke Watanabe (Gantz, Dragonball Z, 20th Century Boys) and Tomohiro Machiyama (personal friend of the Attack on Titan creator).

Attack on Titan Plot/Introduction (slight spoiler included):
Spoiler: show
Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest Titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a Titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a Colossal Titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller Titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single Titan and take revenge for all of mankind. Nominated for the 4th Manga Taisho Awards (2011) and won the Kodansha Manga Award shōnen category (2011). In English, the series is roughly translated to 'Attack on Titan'.

And here's the morning preview of the commercial airing tonight:

No one has been cast yet (or revealed at least), though it's rumored they're considering non-Japanese actors (German or other European actors) for some roles since the characters are from that region (as well as the setting). There's actually just one Asian character (Mikasa) in the series. Everyone else in the world seems to be extinct (eaten), at least up to the point I'm at in the series.

Full Subaru Commercial:

Director Shinji Higuchi says this may not be the how the Titans end up looking in the actual movie, but he is grateful for this opportunity to offer a preview of what is to come in 2015. Overall, they look pretty good to me already. Most of the Titans resemble humans, but some have dis-proportioned bodies (huge heads, small legs, etc). And the Colossal Titan at the end of the commercial is pretty spot on appearance wise (you can compare them in the opening of the video in the previous post). An impressive preview before filming begins this Summer.

The commercial above has generated over 500,000 views in 10 hours, and there are several more with over 100,000 each, too.
