Where is JW:FK likely to end up? Is ¥8.5 billion too high now?

I believe after summer weekdays are over next week JW2 will see a sharp decline and it being at the lower half of Top 10 won't help but then again this week is where it should easily get past ¥8 billion mark so ¥8.5 billion seems like a good target.

How heavily will Code Blue drop after summer? It should be dropping less right?

¥8.5 billion is probably a bit too high a goal now. As Sparrow mentioned, I, too, think it'll experience a sharp decline when September begins (beginning on the 3rd) since it received some of the biggest day-to-day/week-to-week increases over the holidays. I have it finishing around ¥8.3/8.4 billion ($73-75 million).

Code Blue should survive the post-Summer drop pretty well. Its audience is largely fans of the TV drama and the general adult crowd, and Summer releases that target adults generally hold fine going into the Fall.

I'll be posting Daily Estimates once again this week, the final week of the Summer Box-Office Season.

Conan reminds me of Kindaichi. Has a Kindaichi story ever been made into a theatrical release?

Yeah, a live-action film adaptation in December 1997. It earned a ¥1.4 billion distributor income. Before 2000, a film's distributor income/revenue was used instead of gross revenue. It varies a bit from distributor to distributor, year-to-year, etc., but a ¥1.4 billion distributor income would likely be around a ¥2.2 billion (or $16/17 million using the average exchange rate in its first three months of release) gross.

I know it's still about 3 and a half months away but what are the expectations for the new Dragon Ball Super movie? Can it surpass the previous movies ¥3.74 billion?

I think it'll have a similar performance. The last film brought Frieza back and concluded the Dragon Ball Z era, and that was probably more appealing to the fans than the inclusion of Broly in this new film. We'll see, though, because being the first Dragon Ball Super film should keep interest high, too, especially if it leads to a new season/arc of the anime in 2019.

Akira Toriyama, series creator, is supervising once again and writing the screenplay. So for him to write Broly, who was always considered a non-canon character until now, into the story when he's never been in the manga or anime and hasn't been in any films since 1994, might generate some additional buzz.

Yeah, just an early indicator that the summer box-office season is about to end, and school is about to begin.

Next week will see significant day-to-day/week-to-week drops for the younger skewing films, while the older skewing films will mostly see normal declines over the weekdays. That said, this upcoming weekend is usually very strong for younger skewing films since it's the last weekend before school resumes. Saturday is also the first of the month (national discount day) this September, so we may see some incredible holds (and possible increases?).

Eh, it's okay. If it was a Friday outside of Summer, I'd consider it good, but it's just decent. I don't think it'll open at #1 with that start.

I'll post the Weekend Forecast soon.

This weekend is tricky to predict. Saturday is going to be a very, very busy day, thanks to it being the first of the month (national discount day) and the last completely free day before schools/universities start back on Monday. And Sunday will likely be very weak since Saturday will greatly deflate it, and the evening/night showings, in particular, will probably be very slow.

So... expect some great holds across the board, and while Saturday pre-sales do suggest a couple films (other than One Cut of the Dead) could experience a weekend increase, I really think Sunday will be weak enough to lower the overall weekend to probably prevent increases. Still, this weekend is generally very strong every year, and this year's will be no different.

Ant-Man and the Wasp will be aiming to debut atop the box-office, and while it has a fair chance, its pre-sales for Saturday just don't look strong enough to do so despite leading the pack. Marvel films typically have some degree of frontloading to them, so I think it'll fall just shy.

Also, this weekend will likely secure that Code Blue will go on to outgross Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer to become the highest-grossing, and most-attended, film of 2018. If it has a sixth-weekend similar to the forecast above, it's likely to exceed ¥9 billion ($81/82 million). It'll become only the fourth domestic live-action to ever exceed ¥9 billion, and it'll be the first domestic live-action film to top a year since 2012.

Ant man 2 getting to $10m is a good mark. It's done well in terms of holding its audience from the first movie that's why I think it's good. Though I agree overall it's average.

>Killing for the Prosecutors defends its position atop the box-office, delivering a great second weekend hold. Director Masato Harada's latest is proving to be a success early in its run, and could make a real play at the ¥3 billion ($25-30 million) milestone.

>Ant-Man and the Wasp debuts in second place, selling a solid 238,979 admissions over the weekend frame across 656 screens. While it was unable to open atop the weekend box-office (and ranked third in admissions...), its debut is an impressive 67% higher than its predecessor. Marvel/DC films are often frontloaded in the market, but a total just above ¥1.5 billion ($14/15 million) should be doable.

>Gintama 2 slips to third place in its third weekend (though it ranked second place in admissions), posting an excellent hold before heading into the Fall box-office season. Sequels to domestic live-action films rarely come close to matching the success of their predecessors, but the well-known loyal fanbase of the Gintama franchise has been turning out once again, so expect a total around ¥3.5 billion ($31/32 million).

>Code Blue comes in fourth place in its sixth weekend of release, and is well on track on becoming the highest-grossing, most-attended, film of 2018. After six weeks, the film adaptation of the popular TV drama has sold almost 6.5 million admissions. Expect a total above ¥9 billion ($81/82 million), making it only the fourth domestic live-action film to ever reach the milestone.

>Incredibles 2 rounds out the Top 5. As I've mentioned multiple times, the Pixar sequel got off to a slow start, and really turned this around. It wasn't the breakout hit, or really the turnaround, that Pixar would have wanted in the market, but an expected total a bit over ¥5 billion ($45/46 million) is still impressive; and depending on where it finishes, will either be just shy, on par, or a bit higher than its predecessor.

>Sunny: Strong Mind, Strong Love debuted in seventh place, selling a decent 128,412 admissions over the weekend frame on 318 screens. I doubt it'll reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, but the opening is high enough to put the mark in play.

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout drops to eighth place in its fifth weekend of release. The sixth entry in the blockbuster franchise is performing very well, but it hasn't been holding quite as well as its predecessor, and while it should still reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million) milestone, it's going to do so at a slower pace than expected after its opening weekend.
