>Deadpool 2 easily debuts atop the box-office, and nearly matched the opening weekend of the original, coming just 2% shy of matching its debut. Deadpool's second outing sold a solid 239,215 admissions over the weekend frame on 789 screens, and 396,062 admissions since opening on Friday. I expect the film to be frontloaded like the vast majority of superhero films in the market, but it could once again reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone.

>50 First Kisses, a Japanese remake of 2004's 50 First Dates, came in comfortably above estimates, and ended up enjoying a decent opening weekend. It sold 96,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 321 screens, and 136,848 admissions since opening on Friday. I don't believe Sony will earn a much needed ¥1 billion (~$10 million) earner with this film, but the genre can develop strong legs, so there is at least a slight chance it reaches the milestone.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer falls to third place, finally being dethroned in its eighth-weekend of release, selling an additional 87,000 admissions to exceed 6 million. As of this weekend, it has broken the franchise record by nearly ¥1 billion, and is comfortably to exceed the ¥8 billion next weekend. Unless we see a surprise breakout in the second-half of 2018, the twenty-second film in the Detective Conan franchise will likely win the yearly crown.

>Over Drive is a major bomb, so much so that it hasn't had its official weekend figure released yet... Since opening on Friday, though, its 3-day admissions were 93,221 from playing on 302 screens. When its weekend gross is released, I'll come back and update it.

>Avengers: Infinity War collapsed in its sixth-weekend of release, but not before surpassing The Avengers over the weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.

The Marvel/DC Opening Weekend/Top Grossing Film Charts have been updated above.

Damn Tokyo Olympiad from 1965 with 19.50 million admissions how much would it make with today's Yen/USD?

It would depend on its primary demographic, but 19.5 million admissions would be somewhere around the ¥25 billion ($225 million+) mark. Possibly even around ¥26/27 billion ($235/240 million) since I'd presume most of its audience consisted heavily of adults.

I haven't read anything about the possibility, since Tokyo is hosting the 2020 Olympics, but it would be interesting.

I don't think a spiritual successor would do anywhere near the admissions of the original, though. Tokyo Olympiad was a very important, groundbreaking documentary for the country of Japan at the time, so attempting to replicate that significance seems impossible to me.

Corpse,
This may be looking for a needle in a haystack, but is there any number, or estimate, on how the second Godzilla anime did after its abysmal first week. It flopped hard, even for its low theater count, but there's plenty who would like an idea of how it did.

Despite the fact that musicals seem to be over-performing in Japan lately, it seems that Mamma Mia! itself wasn't much of a hit.

BOM says it opened with $5m and finished with $27m (don't know the ER). This seems like a pretty average multiplier in general for Japan.

Corpse will know more.

Yeah, I can get you an estimate. I'm going to be away for a few days, so expect a response on Monday or Tuesday.

Mamma Mia! performed well in Japan. Its opening weekend is still the second-highest for a live-action musical (thanks to opening on the 1st of a month), only behind Beauty and the Beast (2017).

However, its legs as feasby007 mentioned were average, and it's "only" the seventh-highest grossing live-action musical in the market. I don't expect Mamma Mia! 2 to do particularly well, and I'd be surprised it it matched the success of the original.

>Shoplifters, the latest from director Hirokazu Takeba (The Third Murderer, Like Father, Like Son), delivered a great debut, and certainly one of the most surprising of 2018 so far. The film sold an impressive 350,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 34 screens, and after Friday's numbers and last weekend's previews (very rare occurrence), brought its admissions up to 613,582.

I never doubted this film would do solid business, Takaba's award-winning films typically deliver solid box-office results, but this is definitely breakout territory and I could see it reaching ¥3 billion ($30 million), which will be more than enough to be the top grossing May and June release this year.

>Deadpool 2 held pretty well in its second weekend, and has already exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone. It's not locked yet, and I'd probably just consider it a 50/50 chance still, but the possibility of reaching the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone, and matching the original, is looking doable.

>50 First Kisses was likely to hold well given its genre, but a sub-10% second weekend drop is incredibly impressive. Its opening weekend was slightly lower than I expected and I didn't think it could reach the ¥1 billion milestone, but it's probably going to get there now.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer continues to kill it at the box-office, remaining in the Top 5 in its ninth-weekend of release after an excellent decline. It is now only the second domestic franchise animated film to ever exceed the ¥8 billion milestone, and unless it experiences a harsh drop soon, it's probably going to outgross Stand By Me, Doraemon (¥8.38 billion) to become the highest-grossing domestic franchise film of all-time! And as I've mentioned recently, this film is likely to take the 2018 yearly crown.

Corpse,
This may be looking for a needle in a haystack, but is there any number, or estimate, on how the second Godzilla anime did after its abysmal first week. It flopped hard, even for its low theater count, but there's plenty who would like an idea of how it did.

Yeah, I can get you an estimate. I'm going to be away for a few days, so expect a response on Monday or Tuesday.

Just now noticed this actually. Thanks Corpse.

It looks like it'll just miss out both admissions and box office wise.

It may get into top 50 USD wise, due to a much better ER than anything before 2000, however that's pretty useless to measure due to the age of the market

It seems that Japanese movies do open more and more frequently on Fridays as well...

Nah, but a Top 60 position is still remarkable for a film like this (animated sequel in an annual franchise). Among sequels/prequels only, it looks to rank 22nd all-time.

Also remember that while Japan enjoys long-running franchises, it's still a market that favors original films over sequels/prequels at the box-office when it comes to blockbusters. So anytime a sequel/prequel can manage to approach the Top 50 is still quite impressive.

Only 21 films in the Top 50 are sequels/prequels with most of them being on the second-half of that list: Only 7 films in the Top 25 are sequels/prequels, while just 2 are in the Top 10.

Yes, pretty much ever major domestic release is now releasing on Friday. And it appears to be working out very well because opening weekends (still only Saturday and Sunday) don't seem deflated, or if they are it's very minimal, and daily/weekly percentage changes have been normal.

And oddly enough, there are some examples of Friday releases experiencing stronger than expected Sundays than they probably would have had given the traditional Saturday release. You'd think it would be the opposite since Friday, theoretically, would burn off some weekend demand, but that hasn't really been the case yet, even for fanbase driven releases.

So, that extra day of release ahead of the weekend, so far, is simply a bonus in terms revenue/admissions -- almost like a pseudo-holiday.
