05 (--) ¥107 million ($1.0 million), 0, [334], 47 Ronin (Toho-Towa) NEW
06 (04) ¥94 million ($920,000), -48%, [315], Red 2 (Disney) Week 2
07 (--) ¥87 million ($850,000), 0, [301], Ask This of Riku (Toei) NEW
08 (05) ¥66 million ($640,000), -47%, [316], Captain Phillips (Sony) Week 2
09 (06) ¥50 million ($490,000), -47%, [289], SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 1 (Toho) Week 6
10 (07) ¥29 million ($280,000), -37%, [124], Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) Week 7
11 (08) ¥19 million ($180,000), -50%, [281], It All Began When I Met You (Warner Bros.) Week 3
12 (09) ¥15 million ($140,000), -57%, [148], Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future! (Toei) Week 7
13 (10) ¥13 million ($120,000), -60%, [323], The Counselor (Fox) Week 4

A few rough drops this weekend since a discount day fell on last Sunday.

>Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan: The Movie sees the biggest debut since The Wind Rises back in July. The debut is also comparable to the past several Detective Conan franchise films, which would put it's projected total somewhere around ¥3.5 billion ($35 million). However, with the Emperor's Birthday and New Year coming up in a few weeks, it has a shot at reaching ¥4 billion ($40 million).

>47 Ronin bombs. It opened on Friday, so the 3-day total should be ¥120-130 million ($1.2 million). Still very poor, and I thought the disappointing total for After Earth ($10/11 million) would be doable, but Ronin will only be looking at ¥700-800 million ($7-8 million).

Weekend Results [12/07-12/08]

01 (--) Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 2 (Toho) Week 2
03 (02) The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Toho) Week 3
04 (03) The Kiyosu Conference (Toho) Week 5
05 (--) 47 Ronin (Toho-Towa) DEBUT
06 (--) Ask This of Riku (Toei) DEBUT

07 (04) Red 2 (Disney) Week 2
08 (05) Captain Phillips (Sony) Week 2
09 (06) SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 1 (Toho) Week 6
10 (07) Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) Week 7

>Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan achieves the biggest opening in 5 months, earning ¥649,835,000 ($6.4 million) and 539,132 admissions on 329 screens. The audience breakdown was: 16-19 (24.2%), 20-29 (23.5%), 40-49 (21.6%), 30-39 (10.6%), 13-15 (10%), and 6-12 (9.7%). The crossover film will be targeting a ¥4 billion ($40 million) total.

>SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 2 is now up to ¥1,144,983,300 ($11.3 million) and 953,253 admissions after 10-days in release.

>The Tale of Princess Kaguya continues a steady pace, and has grossed ¥1,113,869,000 (11.0 million) and 938,892 admissions after 16-days.

>The Kiyosu Conference remains strong in it's fifth week in release, and has earned ¥2,452,728,800 ($24.9 million) and 2,042,536 admissions. It should reach the ¥3 billion ($30 million) milestone by the end of the month.

>47 Ronin disappoints big time. The film opened very wide on 753 screens, but only grossed ¥105,248,200 ($1.0 million) and 77,894 admissions over the weekend frame. It'll have to settle for a very disappointing total of ¥500-600 million ($5-6 million).

>Ask This of Riku sees a decent opening for Toei. Playing on 301 screens, it earned ¥86,907,700 ($850,000) and 78,743 admissions. The fact that it beat 47 Ronin in admissions makes Ronin look even more embarassing, and it's likey Riku will beat it in overall gross, too.

>SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 1 stays in the top 10 for another week, bringing it's six-week total up to ¥2,517,473,150 ($26.2 million) and 2,020,821 admissions.

Ghibli Adapts Joan G. Robinson's When Marnie Was There Novel Into Anime

Image

Film distributor TOHO announced its 2014 lineup on Thursday, and revealed that Studio Ghibli's next film will be an adaptation of Joan G. Robinson's English children's novel classic When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie) next summer. Hiromasa Yonebayashi is returning to direct his second film after 2010's The Secret World of Arrietty.

The novel is one of the 50 books that Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki recommended in a list he created for children. In September, Miyazaki announced his retirement from feature films after his 11th film, The Wind Rises.

The film's website has the tagline, "There is a magical circle invisible to the naked eye in this world."

Keiko Niwa (Ocean Waves, From Up On Poppy Hill, The Secret World of Arrietty), Masashi Ando (character designer on Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Paprika), and Yonebayashi co-wrote the screenplay, and Takatsugu Muramatsu (Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri) is scoring the soundtrack.

Weekend Forecast [12/14-15]

02 (--) ¥320 million ($3.1 million), [313], Gravity (Warner Bros.) NEW

04 (02) ¥162 million ($1.5 million), [292], SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 2 (Toho) Week 3
05 (--) ¥130 million ($1.2 million), [282], The Liar and His Lover (Toho) NEW
06 (03) ¥119 million ($1.1 million), [347], The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Toho) Week 4
07 (04) ¥78 million ($770,000), [334], The Kiyosu Conference (Toho) Week 6
08 (05) ¥68 million ($670,000), [335], 47 Ronin (Toho-Towa) Week 2
09 (06) ¥65 million ($640,000), [316], Red 2 (Disney) Week 3
10 (07) ¥48 million ($470,000), [316], Captain Phillips (Sony) Week 3

>Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan looks like it'll defend its #1 position based on morning ticket sales. Gravity is doing well, but it'll probably open solid and go on to have stellar legs. Multipliers for many films approach or can exceed 10 that open close to New Year. Kamen Rider will more than likely debut in the same range as it's many, many predecessors of late.

>Spectacular second weekend for Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan. If the estimates hold, there should be little doubt that it'll reach ¥4 billion ($40 million) now.

>A so-so start for Gravity. Reviews are good, and legs this time of year are often very long, so it could certainly recover over the next few weeks. The 3D share might be over 60% for once with this release, so the actual could be slightly higher, too.

>Pretty standard opening for Kamen Rider.

>And solid debut for The Liar and His Lover.

10 (05) 47 Ronin (Toho-Towa) Week 2
11 (06) Red 2 (Disney) Week 3

>Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan retained its spot on top, dropping a strong 27% (24% in admissions) in it's second weekend, earning ¥473,172,850 ($4.6 million) and 408,717 admissions. Estimates were spot on with it's admissions, but the avg. ticket price saw a sharp decline indicating the film is probably attracting a significant senior audience due to Lupin the III's presence in this film.

After 9-days in release, the film has already exceeded 1.2 million admissions and ¥1.4 billion ($13/14 million). The film opened 3.5% behind the last 'Detective Conan' film, but is now ahead by 5% after two weeks and is on track for ¥4 billion ($40 million).

>Gravity saw a nice bump from estimates thanks to it's 77.5% 3D share. This is the highest 3D share for a film since Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The film grossed a respectable ¥302,833,000 ($3.0 million) and 197,006 admissions over the weekend on 549 screens. The opening is a little subdued, though legs are bound to be strong, and reaching ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) shouldn't be too difficult, so it'll be aiming for ¥3 billion+ ($30 million+).

>Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Giam & Wizard (the 49th theatrical release in the series) got off to a slow start, earning ¥223,517,750 ($2.2 million) and 196,252 admissions on 284 screens. This is 10-15% lower than recent films in the franchise, but it should still be another ¥1 billion ($10/11 million) grosser. Toei has been releasing 3 films every year (every Dec., Apr., and Aug.) for the past 4/5 years, so there might be a little franchise fatigue going into effect recently.

>The Lover and His Liar debuted on 284 screens to ¥164,008,300 ($1.6 million) and 135,797 admissions. This opening is slightly higher than some were expecting, and might be enough to allow it to also achieve the ¥1 billion ($10/11 million) milestone.

>A Tale of Samurai Cooking opened in limited release last week in 19th place, and expanded wide this weekend to rank in 7th place. Expanding to 261 screens, the film grossed ¥79,825,800 ($778,000) and 71,494 admissions.

Wide Openers this upcoming weekend includes:

The Eternal Zero (Toho)
Planes (Disney)
Walking with Dinosaurs (Fox)

The Eternal Zero, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, has been generating an incredible amount of positive interest, and is expected to have blockbuster potential (¥5 billion+ or $50 million+).

I'm not sure. Schwarzenegger was in Tokyo for the premiere a couple weeks ago, so that's at least some positive news.

Opening this weekend is The Eternal Zero, the new film from director Takashi Yamazaki. Yamazaki is considered one of the most-talented filmmakers in Japan today, and his new film is receiving glowing reviews and is expected to be a major box-office hit, too.

Acclaimed director + WW2 + New Year release + excellent reviews + huge senior appeal = $$$$.

‘Eien no Zero’ tells the story of Saeki Kentaro, who continues to fail the National Bar Examinations and loses sight of the goal of his life, and his old sister Keiko, who is a freelance writer looking up their grandfather Miyabe who died in the Pacific War as a Kamikaze pilot. Miyabe had an astute ability as a pilot of fighter planes, but he was extraordinarily afraid of death. His two grandchildren started wondering why he applied for the Kamikaze corps. Revealing Miyabe’s unexpected title of “genius yet coward”, they unveil a surprising fact which has been sealed for over 60 years.

Total Gross: ¥54.3 billion ($693.9 million)
Total Admissions: 42.9 million (¥1,266/$16.17 Avg. Ticket Price)

The Top 10 (12) of 2013 is almost final. 'The Wind Rises' will stay in release for a few more months, and can add a significant amount if it gets nominated or wins an Oscar, while 'The Kiyosu Conference' will more than likely pass up 'Wreck-It Ralph', but only barely.

2013 looks to have handily beat 2012 in admissions and should see a fair increase in Yen, but in USD the year will certainly be down since the Yen has strengthened so much over the past 12 months and has been at a 4/5 year high for most of the year (the 26.2% USD drop in the avg. ticket price shows the approx. exchange rate shift).

Weekend Forecast [12/21-22]

01 (--) ¥560 million ($5.5 million), [346], The Eternal Zero (Toho) NEW
02 (01) ¥326 million ($3.1 million), [330], Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Toho) Week 3
03 (02) ¥212 million ($2.1 million), [313], Gravity (Warner Bros.) Week 2
04 (--) ¥150 million ($1.4 million), [317], Planes (Disney) NEW
05 (03) ¥114 million ($1.1 million), [286], Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Gaim & Wizard (Toei) Week 2
06 (04) ¥98 million ($960,000), [284], The Liar and His Lover (Toho) Week 2
07 (05) ¥94 million ($920,000), [292], SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 2 (Toho) Week 4
08 (--) ¥90 million ($890,000), [316], Walking with Dinosaurs (Fox) NEW
09 (06) ¥74 million ($730,000), [345], The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Toho) Week 5
10 (07) ¥49 million ($480,000) [262], A Tale of Samurai Cooking (Shochiku) Week 3

This is a 3-day Holiday Weekend (Emperor's Birthday on Monday), but I'm only predicting the 2-day weekend frame itself this time. Normally though, Holiday Mondays are about on par with Saturday or Sunday, so increase the 2-day predictions by ~40-60% (high-end for kid/family films) to get a 3-day prediction (ex. ¥800-850 million for The Eternal Zero).

>The Eternal Zero will be the film to watch this month, and likely during the next several months.

Ticket sales so far are very strong for an original film that will go on to have incredible legs if reviews and early audience reception are any indication. Mediocre films can get close to or over a multiplier of 10 that open this weekend in most years, and ones with great reviews and WOM often receive exceptional legs (recent examples being Avatar or Les Miserables), so a debut in the ¥500 million range can result in huge final numbers.

>Planes and Walking with Dinosaurs are hard to gauge since there isn't any good comparisons for them. Outside of Disney/Pixar and some Dreamworks, low-scale CG films like this rarely ever see a wide-release - if they get one at all anymore. I'm just going with about 1/3 of Cars 2's numbers for Planes and sub-¥100 million on Dinosaurs. Both predictions may be too high, too. Neither of them are doing very well this morning either.

"The Eternal Zero" off to a rocket start, aiming for ¥6 billion!

Image

Opening on 430 screens, Takashi Yamazaki's new film started off strong on Saturday and will be aiming for ¥6 billion ($60 million) with this momentum according to distributor Toho. Also according to Toho, customers of all ages were attending the film, and actor Okada Junichi is expected to become the face of the New Year box-office.

The Eternal Zero also stars Miura Inoue, Takeshi Hamada, Shota Someya, Hirofumi Arai, Takahiro Miura, and Tatsuya Ueda. The cast, along with director Yamazaki, were present for a stage greeting at Toho Cinemas Nichigeki's first Saturday showing, and the film was met with a standing ovation afterward with some female audience members observed tearful.

Toho often exaggerates how well their films are doing opening day, and saying a film is aiming for ¥6 billion ($60 million) after a half-day's business can certainly be premature. However, it is outpacing Midsummer Formula and The Kiyosu Conference, both of which almost opened to ¥500 million earlier this year, and a debut higher than them would definitely put ¥5 billion+ ($50 million+) into play this time of year, so ¥6 billion wouldn't be crazy talk.

Toho Cinema admissions, and maybe Saturday estimates, should be available soon.

19,541 [291] - Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Week 3)
10,392 (92.2% 3D share) [266] - Gravity (Week 2)
10,391 (12.4% 3D share) [312] - Planes (NEW)
8,910 [230] - The Liar and His Lover (Week 2)
7,953 (34.9% 3D share) [299] - Walking with Dinosaurs (NEW)
5,658 [179] - SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 2 (Week 4)
5,523 [163] - Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Giam & Wizard (Week 2)
4,720 [222] - The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Week 5)
2,158 [35] - The Best Offer (NEW)
2,104 [90] - The Kiyosu Conference (Week 7)

1,608 (24.8% 3D share) [113] - 47 Ronin (Week 3)
1,526 [117] - A Tale of Samurai Cooking (Week 3)

923 [53] - SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 1 (Week 8)
722 [42] - Only Lovers Left Alive (NEW)
497 [57] - Captain Phillips (Week 4)

>The Eternal Zero beat the opening day admissions of every live-action film at Toho Cinemas from the past 15 months (since Resident Evil 5), and will break ¥500 million this weekend if it remains steady, though given the WOM, it might inch closer to ¥600 million.

>And not bad for Planes or Walking with Dinosaurs. Planes can do ¥200 million ($2 million) with these numbers (thus beating Brave's opening weekend, embarrassingly enough), even if it's 3D share is abysmal, and Walking with Dinosaurs should clear ¥100 million ($1 million).

Eternal Zero does look good. I'm glad it's doing well. I hope it can get a bit of attention from other markets too, but this seem unlikely at this point. Only Hong Kong seem to like watching Japanese movies, with most other markets rejecting them outright.

Very strong Sunday. Every film showing at Toho Cinemas saw an increase over Saturday.

>The Eternal Zero did exceptionally well, and 91,000 admissions at Toho locations means it will exceed 400,000 admissions for the weekend, and maybe even 450,000+.

Before Weekend Estimates are released (if they are, Monday is a Holiday), I'm thinking it earned between ¥530-580 million ($5.2-5.7 million). So after the Emperor's Birthday tomorrow, it's 3-day total should be near ¥900 million ($8.5-9 million).

>Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan held very well once again and its early ticket sales for the Emperor's Birthday tomorrow are well above those for either Saturday or Sunday (clearly the family film of this New Year), so it's 3-day total will be very impressive.

>Planes did alright, and 24,000 admissions here will be enough for a 100,000 admissions+ and ¥100-125 million ($1.0-1.2 million). The opening is looking similar to that of Brave.

>Walking with Dinosaurs probably missed 100,000 admissions for the weekend, but with it's better 3D share (though still poor), it could end up close to Planes in gross.
