Boosted by the popularity of 3D pics, including the local smash “Umizaru 3: The Last Message,” distrib Toho’s latest installment in the action series featuring the Japan Coast Guard, total box office receipts for 2010 may pass the 220 billion yen ($2.63 billion) mark. This would beat the all-time (non-inflation-adjusted) record set 2004 — 210.9 billion yen ($2.52 billion).
Boosted by the premium for 3D tickets, three Hollywood 3D pics surpassed the 10 billion yen ($120 million) milestone: “Avatar,” “Alice In Wonderland” and “Toy Story 3.”
From January to October, box office takings totaled $2.14 billion for a 13 percent gain over the same period last year. Also, 57 pics earned more than 1 billion yen ($12 million), long considered the mark of a hit in the Japanese market, as of Nov. 28. This compares with 46 last year. With Hollywood rebounding with 3D releases (although 2D films still suffered greatly), and Japanese films continuing to see nice increases each year, it seemed inevitable that 2010 would set a new record.  2008 totaled: 194.84 billion yen ($2.1 billion). 2009 totaled: 206.04 billion yen ($2.28 billion). The film adaptation was nominated for the Golden Lion at Venice this year, and stars Kenichi Matsuyama ("L" in the Death Note films, Detroit Metal City) and Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, Brothers Bloom, etc.). It is also to be distributed in no less than 50 countries and territories. International releases are becoming quite popular lately, with Umizaru 3 and Space Battleship Yamato receiving the same (but smaller scale) treatment by Toho. Also, there haven't been any updates regarding Space Battleship Yamato this week, except for it being reported to have exceeded 900,000 admissions on Tuesday. So it added approx. 110,000 admissions on Monday and Tuesday. It's difficult to figure out the film's average ticket price due to one of it's days in release being a discount day, but it should have grossed around Y1.1 billion ($13.2 million) as of this past Tuesday.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast Robin Hood and Shrek 4 (opening next weekend) both received very late releases in Japan.
Robin Hood opened on Friday. It should open close to $2 million for the 2-day, perhaps $2.5 million for the 3-day. With New Year, that may be good enough for it to achieve $10 million or a little more.

It should gross Y350/400 million this weekend, for a two week total of approx. Y1.75/1.8 billion ($21/22 million).

Space Battleship Yamato (-32%)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (-16%)
Bleach: Hell Arc (-72%) - bye bye shot at a Y1b total.
Abacus and Sword (-27%)
SP: The Motion Picture (-26%)
Those drops would, if they remain similar on Sunday too, put Yamato and Harry Potter in a very close race to the top this weekend with Y375/400 million ($4.5 million or so).
As for the two wide openers,
Robin Hood sold 60% of The Expendables Saturday (both opened early on Friday), while Norwegian Wood sold 25% more than Ghost: In Your Arms its first day.
Norwegian Wood would gross about Y150-175 million (close to $2 million) this weekend if it keeps that up.
Robin Hood looks to be disappointing some. If that 60% remains for Sunday as well, then it won't be grossing much more than Y100 million ($1.2 million) this weekend. And probably about $1.5 million for the 3-day with it's early Friday opening.

Manga chapter dedicated to it, episode leading up to it, 10 year anniversary, etc. It had the biggest opening of the four films, but doesn't look to really gross more than the other in the end.

The good news is that Deathly Hallows had a slightly bigger 4th weekend than Half-Blood Prince, but it's nearly Y1.2 billion behind in total after four weeks.
Even with New Year though (the other Potter films have yet to hit their holiday weeks at this point too, though), there's just no way Deathly Hallows can reach Half-Blood Prince's Y8.0 billion total. It looks like DH is going to finish around Y7 billion.
If DH2 is in 3D, that will finally stop the downward spiral.

For the curious... Tanlged, The Tourist and Narnia are being released in the Spring. I thought Shrek 4 was also releasing this week in Japan...isn't it?  BOM has it's International Total at $499,046,003, so it'll cross the $500 million milestone on Saturday. No.1 distributor was Toho once again this year, earning Y68.7 billion (about $818 million) for about 1/3 of the total box office revenue. Their top films were: The Borrower Arrietty - Y9.3 billion ($114.5 million), Umizaru 3 - Y8.0 billion ($100 million), and Bayside Shakedown 3 - Y7.3 billion ($88.3 million). In 2008, the Japanese Box Office earned Y194.84 billion yen ($2.1 billion), with Toho on top with Y65.5 billion ($724.3 million). Toho's top films were: Ponyo - Y15.5 billion ($172.15 million), Boys Over Flowers - Y7.75 billion ($86.07 million), and Suspect X - Y4.92 billion ($54.64 million). 10. Robin Hood (Toho-Towa) 2Posting the Forecast early this week because it's so difficult, it doesn't really matter.  The Top 2 are certain, though which comes out on top is not. Kamen Rider, the 44th theatrical release (the first was released in 1971) in the series, has the top spot in admissions locked up, but with 3D prices for TRON, it may end up second in gross. However, with TRON opening on a Friday, I believe that gives the latest Kamen Rider film the slight edge in gross. It also helps that the Kamen Rider series is the most frontloaded of any films in Japan. Don't mind if Tron does rank 2nd this weekend though. It's opening on Friday, with 3D, and much better legs than Kamen Rider can hope to get, it's still going to be a sizable hit. Harry Potter and Yamato are most likely going to finish above Shrek and Chushingura, but the latter two could end up surprising. The rest of the Top 10 pretty much becomes pure guess work this week. Norwegian Wood beating Abacus and Sword, and Robin Hood is the only sure thing.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast (early) TOKYO – Distributor Toho’s line-up for 2011 includes a new work from animation hit-factory Studio Ghibli and a raft of sequels and serial releases.
Hayao Miyazaki’s son Goro will take charge of Kokurikozaka Kara (literally – From Kokuriko Hill), his second feature following 2006’s Tales from Earthsea, which grossed over $60 million on its way to being the biggest domestic film of the year.
Miyazaki senior is credited for writing and planning for Kokurikozaka Kara, which is due to be released in summer 2011. The movie is based on a 1980 manga series set in the 1960s about a high school girl who has to grow up fast after her father goes missing.
This year’s Ghibli production, also written by Miyazaki senior and Niwa Keiko, but directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, The Borrower Arrietty, pulled in over $110 million at the summer box office.
Also in the Toho pipeline are sequels to two TV net-backed hits Amulfi (Fuji TV), which grossed over $37.5 million last year (2009), and Kaiji (NTV), which took almost $25 million.
On top of these are the usual string of releases from animation serials such as Pocket Monsters, Doraemon and Crayon Shinchan.And to add to the Ghibli news, Suzuki (chief producer, and president) had previously revealed "The Five-Year Plan for the Management of Studio Ghibli" at the end of last year, after Miyazaki presented part of the plan to the Ghibli production staff in November of that year. The first three years are devoted to works by young creators, while the last two years will be devoted to the production of "epics."
The first work was this year's Karigurashi no Arrietty from first-time director Hiromasa Yonebayashi. The second work is Kokuriko-Zaka Kara, with which Suzuki says that Goro Miyazaki will demonstrate his "true worth" since his first film involved "beginner's luck."
Suzuki did not specifically say if there will be a third work by a young creator next year, nor how many "epics" will be made in the last two years of the five-year plan. Suzuki did say that Kokuriko-Zaka Kara is in the final stage of storyboarding.

Surprisingly, 2012 made the 2010 release cut, while Harry Potter wasn't listed, not even as a projected estimate. So I'm assuming it's going to be counted as a 2011 release. Something similar happened with Goblet of Fire, the last November released Potter film, when it was included on the 2006 charts. Most were the same figures I've been posting weekly on my charts, but I will edit accordingly with next week's update. Tron has only sold 11% of Harry Potter's first Saturday.
Shrek 4 at 13% of Harry Potter's first Saturday.
Latest Kamen Rider up 88% over Kamen Rider Episode Blue's first Saturday, and will take the top spot this weekend uncontested now.
My revised Top 5 (6-10 are still guess work) this weekend would be:
