Welp. So much for worrying about theaters shutting down...Hope it's the right choice though, Japan doesn't need more clusters.

No, they've remained "high" (for them), around 2,500 a day (~500 in Tokyo), but theaters haven't had any reported clusters and aren't of any focus of restrictions due to their relative safety, acceptable hours of operation (vast majority have their last showings before 10pm), and strict guidelines (temperature check required for all guests before entering, mask-wearing 100% mandatory).

Nearly all of the clusters have occurred from bars, restaurants, and any business selling alcohol late into the night/early morning, so there was a 10pm curfew put in place again in Tokyo this week (which is what happened over the summer, too). But unlike a lot of countries (looking at you America...), the Government is compensating them for lost business after 10pm (up to ¥200,000 or ~$2,000 a day, I believe)

The Usual Locations will release the reservations from ~50% of the market later this evening. Otherwise, you just have to go theater to theater and manually count. But they're way up, as expected.

All the busy Toho Cinemas are up significantly, almost certainly near or over 50% versus last Saturday from just checking a handful out. And the entire MOVIX Cinema chain is up 55% in reservations versus last Saturday (there's a guy who counts all of them).

But remember what I said yesterday: It won't be surprising if Saturday does begin being up 50% or something versus last Saturday due to the rush to get the limited giveaway (1 million this time, not 1.5 million) from fans and scalpers alike. The last giveaway day began over 30% up versus that prior Saturday, but ultimately fell to a 2.8% drop for the day as it progressed. That was absolutely incredible regardless, especially at that level of sales, but the first half of the day is going to be very inflated today. If it starts out around 50% higher and maintains that lead up through noon, I'd expect an increase around 25% versus last Saturday.

And since the giveaways last all weekend maybe the drop will be a little smaller than 25% / 30% on Sunday, right ?

Why they dont continue to give 1.5m again? Only 1m?

Sunday on Movix is down 40% which is a bit better than Thursday/Friday pre-order drop so yeah 20-25% drop is expected but weak late shows could make it drop a bit more.

They last until they run out. I expect the busy locations will run out tomorrow, or very early into Sunday, but yes, it'll support Sunday somewhat too. The first Sunday from the first giveaway weekend saw a 20% decrease versus that prior Sunday, but unlike that one, this Sunday is coming off of a boosted Sunday (from last Monday's holiday), so the decrease should be a little higher this time (25/30% sounds reasonable).

Attendance has dropped of course from two weeks ago. Not by a huge amount, but having so many copies go out doesn't exactly make it a "limited giveaway" anymore and would decrease the demand. It makes it an even more sought after item for fans, and the demand for it will boost theater business immediately. And you wouldn't want any copies that could spillover into the next giveaway.

It's strange a drop so high on a Sunday with a weekend of gifts

That's because there's no guarantee locations will have any left for Sunday, so the bulk of the reservations will be on Saturday, thus lowering the Sunday reservations. 40% is a pretty fair drop in reservations, also. Aiga noted that it was down around 40% at MOVIX in reservations going into Thursday and Friday, too, but those days only dropped ~30%. Reservations get weaker and weaker over time, and rarely reflects what the actual drop for the day is.

And do you think that the fact that theathers will resume their capacity to 100% on weekdays from December 1 and that the sale and consumption of food will be allowed again will help to boost DS weekdays a bit or that will not really have an impact ?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
It's best to just take this on a day by day basis. I do not think theaters going back to 100% capacity on the weekdays will have any real impact, since a number of the busiest locations had already moved back to 100% capacity on the busier weekdays (Mon., Wed., Fri.) during the last week of October due to the demand.

Enjoy the run while it's happening and analyze the numbers as they come in instead of wondering what it might do on some day in the future. Projecting ahead is fine, just don't get too hung up on it (especially if a prediction falls short). There's not much reason to follow or track the box office if it could be accurately predicted day in and day out, or weeks/months ahead of time. The unpredictability, and unknown factor is what makes the Japanese market so interesting since a film of any size can have the potential to have about any type of performance that isn't largely predetermined by precedent when they open. There's little to no limit to potential in the market, such as multipliers (a wide release could have a multiplier of 3 or 30), longevity (a film can be in wide release for half a year and play for a full year), etc.

And this is truer than ever regarding Demon Slayer and the unique state of the box office right now (pandemic situation, Hollywood mostly abandoning the box office, etc.). And again, this is going to be the most interesting film to likely ever track in our lifetimes given the bleak future of the industry in the next 10-20 years. We'll be very lucky if in the future a film ever manages to do just half the business Demon Slayer is doing.

BOOM! This is 78% higher than its Saturday reservations last week (61,000). Just remember, that the reservation number and the first half at least of Saturday is going to be very inflated. The day won't really increase 78% versus last week, but a significant increase is still going to happen, perhaps in the 30% range or so. We'll see.

This Biggest Seventh Weekends includes the updated figures of Spirited away run, right Corpse?

The prediction for Demon Slayer is better than I was expecting, like closer to ¥900 than ¥1000.
Me too hope that it can reach the ¥1Billion!!

It might! It will likely need a 35%+ increase today and/or a sub-30% Sunday drop. I wouldn't bet on Sunday really doing better than that though, so it'll probably come down to Saturday.
