not happy. i am ambivalent. But the eager beavers who want to monitor its hourly gross the end is nigh. Anyway it does not matter as its well into its run. Its a huge blockbuster.

Corpse, along with searching for information about the Showa Gamera features, do you think it's possible to estimate the number of tickets the Heisei Gamera movies sold? Guardian of the Universe (1995) made 520 million yen, Advent of Legion (1996) made 700 million yen, Revenge of Iris (1999) made 600 million yen, and The Brave (2006) made 410 million yen.

It'll be interesting to watch. I honestly don't expect much given the overwhelming poor box-office results and dismal critic and audience scores elsewhere, but the musical is very popular and well-known in Japan. I wouldn't rank it as high as Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera, but it's certainly up there. There's even a Cats-dedicated theatre in Japan that has put on something like 11,000 shows, playing year-round since 1983 (averaging 305 shows a year!). The Japanese version of the musical varies a bit from the original Western version. It helps that Japan also really, really like cats (a lot).

A film adaptation of the musical has great potential in the market, no doubt. I just have doubts about this particular film.

Later this week, either on Wednesday or Thursday, I'll post the Musical Box-Office History update and talk more about Cats.

Getting estimates for those films will be pretty easy. I don't have a lot of free time this evening, and will be spending most of it posting the Weekend Actuals and Chart Updates, but I'll have them posted for you in a day or two. Question though: Are those the Distributor Income totals, or the actual Revenue Gross?

Do you have any comparisons to Your Name., or from Studio Ghibli or other Japanese anime films in the market? 61,391 certainly looks good.

BOM has its six-day total (Wednesday-Monday) in the U.S. at $5,053,773 from 1020 theaters on Wednesday and Thursday (fathom events), and then from 486 theaters from Friday-Monday. That bests the overall gross for Your Name..

I'm guessing it'll go on to surpass Ponyo worldwide ($201 million) to become the #4 highest-grossing anime film, behind just Your Name., Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle.

>Kaiji: Final Game managed to secure its second weekend atop the box-office (in revenue, still second in admissions), selling an additional 154,000 admissions its its sophomore frame. And after ten-days in release, the presumably final film in the Kaiji series has sold 738,000 admissions. This is a solid enough second weekend hold to likely guarantee a total above ¥1.5 billion, so expect a finish around ¥1.6/1.7 billion ($15/16 million).

>Frozen II unfortunately took a hit this weekend--one that it really couldn't afford to have at this crucial stage of its release. It was still able to hold onto the #1 spot in its ninth-weekend in admissions, selling a further 159,000 admissions over the weekend frame, but the harsh 40% drop is probably too much to come back from and puts a much lower ceiling on it. After 59-days in release, the film has sold a huge 9.80 million admissions.

Its chances of reaching the ¥15 billion milestone are now gone, and reaching ¥14 billion ($130 million) and surpassing Weathering With You (¥14.05 billion) has become unlikely. The latter target isn't impossible yet, there are a couple holidays next month, but it really can't have any more drops above 20/25% moving forward or it's going to miss. All of this reads like a lot of doom & gloom, but it's still going to finish with a huge total that shouldn't be considered disappointing. But it is a bit on the underwhelming side, especially after its opening weekend and first couple weeks in release.

>Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also took a big hit this weekend that it couldn't afford in its battle to avoid becoming the lowest grossing Star Wars film since Episode XI, as it's likely to fall below Star Wars: The Last Jedi (¥7.51 billion) now. Episode IX sold a further 116,000 admissions in its fifth weekend of release, bringing its 31-day total up to 4.31 million admissions. Expect a finish around ¥7 billion ($64/65 million) and 4.7 million admissions.

>Last Letter was the top debut this weekend, selling 101,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 261 screens; it sold 136,143 admissions over its first three-days in release. This is as mediocre as it gets, really, but very expected for this time of year, so it's hard to really call it a disappointing start; it's just a boring one.

>Parasite held extraordinary well in its second weekend. Look for it to have a lot of holds similar to this one in the weeks to come, especially if it continues its award-winning ways.

>And finally, The Memory Eraser clearly didn't do much, but it at least managed to break the ¥100 million mark, selling 82,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 327 screens; it sold 108,000 admissions over its first three-days in release.

Disaster
Embarrasing for Frozen 2
Considering Japan market is big and all about animated movie...
Japan will not be much higher than China $122.5M
Does it still have chance to pass Harry Potter 3? (¥13.5B/$125M)??

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (01/1
Maybe. It has just really, really struggled over the weekdays since it opened, which has had a big impact on its total. So, they won't be adding much to its total at this stage. And... other than a couple good weekend holds, it just hasn't been able to get to where it needed most weekends.

There were two major factors that crippled its run following its huge first two weeks:

01. Poor release date: November isn't a good spot for a film that skews younger. The nearest holiday fame is over a month away, and weekdays are just too low for too long. I understand why Disney wanted to release it day-and-date in Japan, but March would have worked so much better.

02. Soundtrack was underwhelming (a borderline flop): There wasn't a breakout song on the entire OST, and unlike its predecessors' OST which was a chart-topping smash, the soundtrack only peaked at #5 I think (and just for a day or two) and faded fast. Hit soundtracks can really, really drive a film at the Japan box-office, so it's pretty crucial for a film like this.

However, it's still a big success. It's obviously disappointing compared to the original, barely making 50% of its gross, but it's still become Disney's second biggest film ever in the market AND the highest grossing animated sequel ever.

Damn, Parasite just keeps finding new countries to break out in! :D How is it doing compared to other Korean films? Could it become one of the biggest ever in Japan?

Embarrasing for Frozen 2
Considering Japan market is big and all about animated movie...
Japan will not be much higher than China $122.5M
Does it still have chance to pass Harry Potter 3? (¥13.5B/$125M)??

If this is not sarcasm, your expectations were unrealistically high. Frozen 2 is still easily the second highest grossing Hollywood animated film after the first Frozen and the second highest grossing Disney film as well. The sequel was never going to replicate the phenomenon of the first Frozen.

I did not expect Frozen 2 to replicate the craziness of Frozen 1 at all, but below $130M is still.....
Now, the final and only milestone which it can do is ¥13.5B/$125M to become the third highest sequel of all time....and I don't know if it can pull $10M more or not....

Hey Corpse, how is Cats expected to do next weekend?

Thank you

Corpse, along with searching for information about the Showa Gamera features, do you think it's possible to estimate the number of tickets the Heisei Gamera movies sold? Guardian of the Universe (1995) made 520 million yen, Advent of Legion (1996) made 700 million yen, Revenge of Iris (1999) made 600 million yen, and The Brave (2006) made 410 million yen.

Those numbers are the distribution income totals.

Do you have any comparisons to Your Name., or from Studio Ghibli or other Japanese anime films in the market? 61,391 certainly looks good.

YOUR NAME opened with €785,141 (64,830 admissions) two years ago and went on to make €1,189,278 (103,700 admissions)

Alright. I'm going to estimate their gross based on the distributor income, and then estimate their admissions from that number for you:

665,000 - Guardian of the Universe
900,000 - Advent of Legion
760,000 - Revenge of Iris
530,000 - The Brave
