Nothing really notable going on this weekend, besides Aladdin repeating atop the box-office for a fifth-consecutive weekend and possibly making a play at the Biggest Fifth Weekend Top 5 list. Spider-Man: Far From Home should have a decent hold, and since its opening weekend was so impressive last week, its forecast second weekend above would only be off just 10% from its predecessor's opening weekend.

This weekend also sort of serves as the calm before the storm that the summer box-office season brings when it begins next weekend. Mid-July through mid/late-August are the strongest six-weeks at the Japanese box-office, and this year's offerings give moviegoers plenty of options and looks to keep the box-office on fire for quite a while longer.

Corpse, is there any possibility of an Endgame re-release in Japan with the bonus footage? I see a lot of other countries have gotten it (or at least scheduled it) already. Though with the crowded summer slate, I'm guessing there is no room for it right now.

I would say no, or at least it's very unlikely. It officially ended its run this past week, losing all of its theaters. And I haven't seen any news articles related to the extra footage. I'm really not sure where they'd manage to squeeze in a significant re-release either, at least over the next 8 weeks, due to how packed the summer box-office will be once again.

I was pretty busy today and it's a little late to really post the Weekend Estimates. My Weekend Forecast above should be pretty accurate though, just with most films dropping slightly more than I predicted (1-5% in most cases). I'll have the Weekend Actuals and chart updates up tomorrow evening as usual.

>Aladdin repeats atop the box-office for a fifth-consecutive weekend, selling a further 468,000 admissions over the weekend to reach 5,986,400. The film continues to perform incredibly well, though it is showing signs of slowing down a bit now. It will become the #1 film of 2019 next weekend and remains on track to finish around ¥11/12 billion ($110 million), where both Alice in Wonderland and Beauty and the Beast finished.

>Spider-Man: Far From Home experiences a near identical (44% vs. 43%) second weekend drop that its predecessor had, which is fine. It's likely going to exceed ¥3 billion ($30 million), and as long as it can enjoy a sub-40% third weekend drop next week, it's probably going to reach ¥3.5 billion ($35 million). It'll probably become the highest-grossing Spider-Man film since the original trilogy, and depending on where it does finish, it'll either be the second or third highest grossing film in the MCU (only behind Endgame, and then possibly Infinity War).

>The Diner debuted decently for Warner Bros., selling 132,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 317 screens, and sold 182,410 admissions since opening on Friday. Not bad, and even with mediocre legs, it should manage to just reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>And finally, a quick mention for Promare, which is still hanging around just outside the Top 10. This near-limited release (121 screens) anime film only opened to about ¥65 million, which was pretty disappointing, but due to a strong audience reception, it developed excellent legs (its seventh weekend is down 50% versus its opening!) and will probably reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone. And it's never expanded. Very notable performance here, even if Toho does decide to pull it before reaching that mark.

I don't think Toy Story 3 opened on a Friday, but Toy Story 4 OD seems very good compared to other films this year. Could we see another ¥1 billion opening weekend?

I'm going back to find a decent comparison for Toy Story 4 now. But unfortunately, I don't believe there's any good comparisons. They either didn't open on Friday (Monsters University, Finding Dory), or they're noticeably smaller films (Incredibles 2, Coco, Inside Out, etc. all others).

The Friday number does indeed look very good. I'm predicting around ¥300 million ($2.7/2.8 million). Animated films usually perform much, much better on Saturday and Sunday, so that would indicate the weekend will be very big, but it's certainly worth noting that most Disney/Pixar films have been skewing older and older in recent years. And the older a film skews, the weaker the weekend is relative to Friday's performance. And Toy Story 4 did sell ~26% of its Friday tickets after 7PM, which is a bit high for a normal animated film, indicating it may indeed be skewing older.

If it does open to ¥1 billion, it would become the first EVER imported animated release to do so. Toy Story 3 holds the current record for biggest imported animated debut with ¥977 million.

I'll do some research ahead of the Weekend Forecast this evening to see if I can find a decent comparison or two though.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (07/0
That is a very strong pre-sale number for Toy Story 4. It doesn't guarantee an opening weekend above ¥1 billion, but it does look likely now.

And as I mentioned above, no imported animated film has ever opened above ¥1 billion, so we're likely to see history made this weekend. 750,000/800,000 admissions is doable, which would also set the opening weekend record for an imported animated film.

If Toy Story 4 does open above ¥1 billion, that'd make it the third film already this year after Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire and Aladdin to reach the milestone. And it may not be the last film to open above ¥1 billion this year! Weathering With You is a strong candidate to open above the mark just next weekend. And then, One Piece Film Stampede is likely to debut to ¥1 billion next month.

We could have FIVE ¥1 billion debuts this year! A ¥1 billion opening is usually reserved for one or two films a year, and there are even some years that don't see a single one. So, to see as many as five in a single year is remarkable.

It looks like the Toy Story franchise is mostly immune to the slump that other Pixar films have faced. Could Toy Story 4 beat Toy Story 3 in yen after all, or is it likely to have worse legs?

There are too many unknowns right now, besides not knowing its opening weekend yet.

Matching/beating the legs of Toy Story 3 will be tough, but if it does open higher, then it wouldn't need to. Audience scores are currently weaker (3-3.5/5), but it's very early and you really need to wait until at least a week to get a idea of what WOM is like. Unless it comes in noticeably higher or lower today/this weekend than expected based on pre-sales, it'll just be a wait and see situation, which I anticipate.

The #1 target/goal for now is managing to open above ¥1 billion. This would be an incredible accomplishment. No imported animated film has ever done it.

>Toy Story 4 debuts this weekend, and it's looking to make Japanese box-office history by becoming the first ever imported animated film to open above ¥1 billion. I think it has a better than 50% chance of doing it based on its pre-sales and early morning Saturday ticket sales, but I'm going to leave its weekend forecast right at said milestone just in case it comes in barely shy. And to claim the record for biggest opening weekend for an imported animated film (held by its predecessor, Toy Story 3), it needs to beat ¥977 million.

And one record that is very likely to be broken is breaking the opening weekend admissions record for an imported animated film (held by Finding Nemo). But, if it's likely to break that record, why won't it open above Toy Story 3 and break ¥1 billion? Because Toy Story 3 opened at the peak of the 3D craze which gave it a huge average ticket sale boost that isn't as prevalent in today's market.

>Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution looks to debut in second place, and based on pre-sales, might just outopen last year's film, Pokemon: Everyone's Story. I was expecting a slight drop from last year's film, so any debut of a similar figure, or higher obviously, is certainly encouraging for the franchise after reaching a low-point a few years back. This film is the first CGI Pokemon film in the series, and is a remake of the original Pokemon film from 1998.

>Aladdin may slip to third place and have a normal hold for the first time in its run, but it's still doing very, very impressive numbers (some of its day-to-day drops were in the single-digits this week). It'll become the highest-grossing film of 2019 over the weekend and likely be less than ¥500 million away from reaching the ¥10 billion uber-milestone.

NOTE: I will posting the hourly admissions tracking for Toy Story 4 over the weekend.

“We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.”
“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”
“You have to pretend you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.”
"Paper is dead without words / Ink idle without a poem / All the world dead without stories."
