Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
So now the real fun begins. It's officially (well, once actuals come in) the second biggest film ever in both revenue and admissions. It hit 20 million admissions over 2 months faster (69 days faster) than Spirited Away!

After tomorrow, it'll only be ~¥3.3/3.4 billion and 2.9/3 million admissions away from Spirited Away coming off a 7th weekend over ¥900 million (maybe even at ¥1 billion) and 700,000+ admissions. I think it'll become #1 all time well before Christmas now, likely sometime during the third week of December. There will probably be a bit of a rush from fans to get it there in the final stretch, too. And if you want to add the re-release figure to Spirited Away, then give it another week and back to that Christmas goal.

I would presume it will. It's probably getting up to around $325 million in Japan alone, perhaps even more, so add the ongoing figures from the international markets that it's playing in now, and it'd be at/over $350 million from just a handful of markets. But it has a lot of markets left to still open, so kinda seems like a done deal.

Seems like 260-280k Saturday in usual locs. That shall give ¥480-530mn.

Unless some correction, thinking ¥400-425mn tomorrow for weekend of ¥880-950mn.

For Sunday I agree, but for Saturday since @Corpse forecasts an increase of 25% and maybe even in the 30% compared to last Saturday I will have seen more on a Saturday around ¥ 550-570mn, even if you might be right we'll see it all over the course of the day

I'm glad I got it right, now we have to reach on Sunday and tomorrow I expect a high drop around 30% (I hope for a lower drop but I don't think it will happen) so probably around ¥400-420mn as Charlie said and therefore a weekend around ¥960-980mn (maybe even it will reach ¥1000mn with current values on Monday).

What are you expecting from tomorrow and from December 1st (discount day) ? And @Corpse do you think you have been rather conservative this week to expect higher than estimated results on Monday ? or rather the other way around ?

Yep seems like it will go even lower. 230k usual locations perhaps.

Are you saying this by looking at the available tickets? Because I'm pretty sure mimorin messed something up there. I don't know if theres also a mistake in the admissions (I'd say no), but the total seats are definitely broken.

Just look the fact that despite getting put back on the biggest screens that got taken away from Doraemon Demon Slayer is somehow listed as having less available tickets than last saturday (620k vs 670k last saturday). The top 10 as a whole has a whopping -600k seats compared to last saturday, and theres showings that have allegedly reached 100% of their seats at 11AM yet have kept going for thousands more. So imho, the projected total seats are messed up all around.

As of now Sat is up 50% so it'd have to completely crumble to end up almost even with last sat.

Does this mean that there were missing seats today in the total number of admissions at usual locations or the problem has since been resolved ?

Yes, furthermore, the best selling volume this past year is Kimetsu no Yaiba #18 with 4 393 137 copies sold, 1 000 000 more than the previous record holder. You're totally right, absurd is the best term for describing this fantastic anomaly^^.

Do you think that the other records (manga, any other one it's set) are as unlikely to be beaten as the movie records? Or are those easier to beat.

I'd go with a 30% drop or so tomorrow. If it goes higher, it goes higher and wouldn't be surprising since last Sunday was boosted, as well as yesterday, so a bit of a double whammy. But it'll mitigate some of the decline from some giveaway spillover and probably avoid going too high.

In the end, we're past the point of being concerned about any sort of drops, really, in regard to it surpassing Spirited Away in mid/late-December at some point. So I wouldn't get hung up on any drops anymore.

Dec. 1st is on a Tuesday, one of the two weakest days of the week, so it won't have a significant impact. If will probably be about flat versus last Tuesday in admissions, but down 10-15% in revenue due to the cheaper tickets. Something like that.

The manga records are not being broken. The series was "only" at 25 million copies in circulation last December, and after 11 months since, it has printed basically 100 million more (120 million reported last week). It didn't just break all the known manga records that it could (except first-print run, but that's a special case), like the movie has done at the box office, it has absolutely obliterated them and monopolized the industry. I don't think any book or series in history, on a worldwide scale, has ever done anything like this--not even close.

And eventually, the population decline that's expected to see up to/over 1 million people gone each year starting around 2030 (already broke 500,000 in 2019) is going to make these, as well as box-office records and anything else, just impossible to overcome (in our lifetimes).

Your Name isn't biggest Japanese film. Spirited Away is, by a distance.

Spirited Away - ¥47Bn ($396mn)
Your Name - ¥40Bn ($378mn)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
To add to what Corpse said, just to give a bit more of an idea of how much a ridicule boost Kimetsu No Yaiba got after its anime, before its anime, back when it had 13 volumes its global sales were 3'000,000 volumes (So around 250k per volume, which was nice), then with 18 volumes it had sold around 18million copies (Around 1million per volume), and now Shueisha just released an updated number of 120million counting digital volumes printed (not sold).

So yeah this thing has probably sold around 80million in a fiscal year, it's like nothing ever seen before (not just in Japan, worldwide, ever), we already discussed this some pages ago.

As for the 1st printing of the volume, the current holder is One Piece's volume 67 with 4.05 million copies 1st run, Kimetsu's last volume, volume 23 will get a 3.95 million copies 1st print run, and I heard that it already received a 2nd print run...

So of course there are theories that Shueisha just wanted to protect OP's record, you can think that, or maybe Shueisha just wanted to make different printings so they don't have to store volumes in their warehouses or whatever.

Either way, officially Kimetsu didn't break that record, but its last volume it's probably gonna obliterate the highest selling weekly/monthly oricon number, and as Corpse said, because of Japan's population decline, every record KnY has beaten it's likely gonna stay as Kimetsu's.

On the other hand, I think that maybe in 5-10 years a seinen manga/anime can break the records, seeing as how this is the same generation that over-hyped Yokai Watch, and now Kimetsu no Yaiba, in 5-10 years they will over-hype some random Seinen and it will sell like hotcakes too, but that's just my crazy theory.

Charlie was right, 225k admissions at the usual locations today, that would be around ¥440mn-¥450mn ($4.2M-$4.3M), enough to reach a weekend over ¥1000mn (but this is not yet certain and remains to be verified with the current figures for tomorrow), and a weekend around 730k admissions

I don't agree with the Yo-Kai Watch comparison since it was 90%+ children under 10 (and their parents as a result) that drove that series for 2-3 years before they all grew up, causing the franchise to largely die-off. And even at its peak in 2014/2015, besides maybe toy sales, it didn't achieve any sort of records in any industry it was apart of (besides biggest opening weekend record for a local film, which Demon Slayer doubled).

Demon Slayer is clearly multi-generational (can't reach this sort of success otherwise), with kids, parents, and grandparents alike enjoying it. I posted a video of a Japanese YouTuber asking random people in the streets about Demon Slayer, and most of them like it, and a number said their moms also like it. And these moms would be over 35/40 at least (probably even around 50 or more since Japanese wait awhile before having children) given the age of the people interviewed.

But yes, the next 5-10 years are very important as that's probably the cut-off before all sorts of records simply begin becoming unattainable in every industry, making Demon Slayer the record-holder of MANY things for many decades to come.
