Well... perhaps im a bit too optimistic in that part lol.

Just being able to be compared to Howl's moving castle, Ponyo or even The Wind Rises is already an outatanding achievement for Shinkai, as one probably never imagined before. If it become the most-grossing this year, I'd be happy enough.

Watching the gifs... I just wonder when will Your name will be available here in my neighbor..

And thanks for the welcomes, guys. I'm looking forward for the comparison too.

What country are you in?

The film is receiving a significant international release, opening in 85 countries/regions. The full list of countries/regions isn't available yet, but the UK is getting it on November 24th and advance tickets are already available there. So if you're in the UK, you'll be among the first to see it outside of Japan.

The U.S. is very likely to get it by year's end and so, too, should France (big market for Japanese films). And I'm sure they'll be many other countries/regions announced by year's end, too.

Indonesia. OP Gold is here this month. So, it'll be a perfect year if Your Name come here too before the year ends.

Alright, so before I begin working on this Weekend's Forecast...

Your Name., believe it or not, is actually looking in great condition to increase once again... Its pre-sales for Saturday (already accounting for 19% of its available admissions for the day) are up almost 20% compared to last week, and while that's not always a 100% accurate indicator, it's a damn strong one.

It "only" needs a 4% increase to claim the biggest third weekend ever, finally beating Harry Potter's claim to that record for the past 15 years.

Biggest Third Weekends (2001-)
¥1.205 billion (-11%) - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
¥1.196 billion (-15%) - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
¥1.078 billion (+05%) - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
¥1.012 billion (-16%) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
¥998.9 million (-21%) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
¥935.7 million (-20%) - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
¥890.0 million (-09%) - Spirited Away (2001)
¥881.2 million (+01%) - Frozen (2014)
¥848.1 million (-22%) - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
¥826.7 million (+14%) - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
¥799.6 million (-24%) - Rookies (2009)
¥776.5 million (-05%) - Ponyo (2008)
¥772.9 million (-30%) - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
¥719.7 million (-23%) - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
¥710.3 million (-13%) - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)

If Your Name. actually increases again, and takes this third weekend record, we may very well have to take a $200 million+, or $250 million+ total into consideration.

>Your Name. is poised to do the unthinkable and increase once again, this time coming off of its sixth biggest second weekend of all-time, and is very, very likely beating Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's 15-year long third weekend record of ¥1.206 billion. It could actually exceed 1 million admissions in its third weekend of release (15.3% increase required); absolutely insane and without any comparison at the box office whatsoever. It's in a different league than any film if it actually achieves that.

Over its opening weekend, it sold through 43% of its available weekend admissions. Then, it experienced an incredible increase last weekend to sell through 55% of its available weekend admissions. And now, it's looking at possibly selling through 60% of its available weekend admissions in its third weekend.

I don't know where this insanity stops, because we have a holiday week coming up after its fourth weekend... that's going to be fun. It's going to zoom right by the ¥10 billion ($100 million) milestone like it was nothing. It now has a greater than 50% chance of exceeding ¥15 billion ($150 million), which will earn it a Top 10 All-Time spot. And... it's beginning to look like a total over ¥20 billion ($200 million) is in play.

>Suicide Squad is set to debut very well, especially for a superhero film, if pre-sales are any indications. Superhero films tend to have high pre-sales to weekend admissions ratios, so it could end up being frontloaded, but I doubt it's going to be too frontloaded. Why? Because of Your Name. continues to sellout the entire weekend at many locations nationwide. Its unprecedented performance boosted everything last weekend from spillover business, and it's likely going to do the same again this weekend.

SS's pre-sales suggest it'll open comfortably above ¥400 million, making it the biggest opener in DC's history in the market!

>Your Lie in April seems likely to land in the ¥200-250 million range that's typical of most shojo films. It's a respectable range to debut in, and legs for these films are generally strong, so it'll likely end up being another success for the genre.

>Gods of Egypt is set to bomb, but that's not unexpected or anything.

So it is looking for another weekend increase. I kinda sensed that with the hype you have mentioned, plus even with the longetivity of films in the market it does seem that movies don't get those late-late legs that they used to do earlier.

Hello, just a passing by guest here.
Thank you for the coverage on Kimi no na wa.
I'm excited that there's another milestone in the anime movie industry since Summer Wars/Girl Who Leapt Through Time/Wolf Children.
Info is still scarce about this movie among my friends, so I'm trying to spread as much info too.

After following the hype here I decided to buy some goods (novel, soundtrack, walker mook) as I think it'd be a good way for me to support it.

I live in suburban area of US so I'm not that confident about a nearby theatrical release. We did get The Wind Rises tho in a local theater.

On the net, word will be spreading soon as illegal content is making its way around. Tho illegal is bad, I hope that would spread the word and drive people to watch it in the big screen.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread since 2 weeks ago. Looking forward to more info about it! (Meanwhile, my friend might drag me out to watch Shin Godzilla once it enters US waters next month)

As of noon, it's indeed outpacing last Saturday as pre-sales were suggesting. It's currently up 9% compared to last Saturday at the same point.

If you look at just about any theater in Japan right now (unless it's in a very rural prefecture, and even many of them are busy), every showing since this morning all the way until after 9/10PM tonight has reached half-capacity or better hours in advance. The theaters located in the more urban areas are almost booked for the entire day (a few are), again. Many theaters already have showtimes for Sunday reaching half-capacity as well, just like last week, so a new record is looking more and more likely.

The holdovers, and new openers, are also thriving from the spillover business again.

It's also doing this in what's traditionally a slow time of the year, the post-summer, back-to-school frame. It's had zero holiday support to speak of since opening, but that's going to change in two weeks. It's hard to imagine what kind of figures it'll be bringing in then, but then again, it realistically can't be doing much more than it is now, it's close to the limits.

Was there the Yen version of it? so it is comparable to current release such as, Your Name.

Yeah, I've posted it a few times over the years. If you don't want to wait until Monday/Tuesday, when I plan to post a comparison between Spirited Away, Frozen, and Your Name. you can check back in July/August 2013 (during The Wind Rises's run), and Spring 2014 (during Frozen's run). I very likely posted it at those times.

Anyway, Your Name. ended up falling slightly behind the pace of last Saturday, down just 2%. Another weekend increase is still possible if Sunday delivers, and ticket sales are very strong, but the possibility of a minuscule decline this weekend is also possible.

Even with a decline, though, a third weekend above ¥1 billion is incredibly likely since it would require a 14% drop to fall below the mark. It'll only be the fifth film to have a third weekend above the mark, and should at least claim the third biggest third weekend ever. If it does end up increasing again, then 3.9% is the magic number to earn the biggest third weekend on record.

Your Name., as of 2PM today, is up 6% compared to last Sunday, selling through an outstanding 62% of its available tickets for the day so far. At the 2PM update yesterday, it was up 2% compared to last Saturday before falling 2% behind for the day. So, if Sunday follows suit, it'll end up being up 2% or so compared to last Sunday.

In other words, its third weekend is looking to be almost exactly even with last weekend, but another weekend increase is certainly doable as well (third weekend record isn't out of play just yet).

Weekend Estimates tomorrow morning.

>Your Name. managed to improve upon its incredible second weekend at the usual locations (up 0.1%), and may have experienced yet another weekend increase. Last weekend, it achieved the sixth biggest weekend of all-time after being the only film to ever earn a second weekend increase after debuting above ¥900 million. And this weekend, it'll at least achieve the third biggest third weekend of all-time (first for a domestic film), and if it actually increased again, it'll become the only film to ever increase after achieving a ¥1 billion weekend.

After three weeks, its total only trails the first two Harry Potter films, two Miyazaki films (Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle), and is on par with The Matrix Reloaded and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (New Years boost for the latter). Its third weekend, however, is bigger than any of them besides the two Harry Potter entries... at the moment (actuals could put it above even them).

At the current rate that it's going, that is staying even/slightly increasing, it'll exceed ¥8 billion ($80 million) over its fourth weekend before heading into a partial-holiday week, and will very likely exceed ¥10 billion ($100 million) over its fifth weekend on its 30th/31st day in release.

By comparison, only four other films have exceeded ¥10 billion in equal/less time: Spirited Away (25 days); Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (28 days); Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (30 days); Ponyo (31 days). Three of them did so with the boost that Obon Festival gave them, and the other (Potter) did so with the boost that New Years gave it. And all of them ended up grossing over ¥15 billion ($150 million+).

If it does end up above ¥10 billion ($100 million) after its fifth weekend, then ¥15-20 billion ($150-200 million) becomes the likely total, with a reasonable chance of even exceeding ¥20 billion ($200 million) itself.

>Suicide Squad comes in a little lower than pre-sales indicated, and was a bit frontloaded over the weekend frame as well. However, based on estimates, its debut is slightly higher than Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice's, and it may be greater than The Dark Knight Rise's ¥372 million to earn itself the title of biggest DC opening in the market. It'll be targeting a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million). Very impressive.

>Your Lie in April settles for the standard shojo adaptation opening, and that's perfectly alright. The genre usually has above average legs, so a total around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) can be obtained with this start.

>Samurai Hustle Returns! earns itself a respectable debut, and may have broke ¥200 million ($2 million). I'm anticipating its audience skewed possibly old enough to lower its avg. ticket price, though, so I'm going with an estimate just below the mark. Either way, a total over ¥1 billion ($10 million) is guaranteed.

>Gods of Egypt actually had a decent enough opening, even if the figure and ranking themselves are poor; it could have done much worse, and this start at least avoided bomb territory.

One note I just noticed on that list (that includes 42 films): Your Name., along with only Frozen, are the only two films there to increase in their second weekends, AND to have third weekends bigger than their opening weekends. And without the assistance of any holiday support (technically Frozen's third week was during Spring Break, but the benefit there mostly comes from bigger weekdays).

Thanks again Corpse!
Your Name is continuing its legacy.
You think achieving top movie this year is a lock? Above a George Lucas' Star Wars movie?! No one sane enough would be predicting this before August.

And OP Gold is out of top ten. Has it officially passes ¥5 b yet?

Your Name. is an absolute lock to beat The Force Awakens (it won't be remotely close), and could do so by month's end. It could earn 50% or more than it, too. Episode VII finished with ¥11.58 billion (#19 All-Time, and second highest in the franchise), but Your Name. is well on track of exceeding ¥15 billion and aiming for a Top 5 All-Time spot.

Yes, One Piece Film Gold is out of the top 10, but it exceeded ¥5 billion on Thursday. It should be at ~¥5.05/5.06 billion after Sunday. And since you're new, I post updated yearly totals following the Weekend Actuals every Monday evening (EST), usually between 7PM-9PM.

Glad to hear that. And OP too, 5b yay!

Hopefully Your Name follows the trend you're predicting. Though I agree, being a Japan film do make it very very plausible, although this is the first Shinkai massive movie to date.

Looking at its target audiece, though, I still have a little bit of doubt in its long-leg performance, so the only target I'm looking forward at is exceeding TFA. Anything above it I considered a bonus :D. I may be wrong, though, and it would be my pleasure if it is.

I just noticed Spirited Away's number, third weekend may not be as impressive as it should be, being the biggest of all time. However, its week day performance from 2nd to 3rd week was second to nothing, averaging near 400 M a day! (Your Name's about a little bit above half of this number, I think).

Yes, Spirited Away's weekdays are what drove its performance, even more than its weekend results. It was released in mid-July, so it enjoyed the Summer Vacation dailies and the boost from Obon Festival in early/mid-August. This is why comparing it to Your Name., on a day-to-day basis, isn't going to be accurate. The same goes for any Frozen comparisons since it was a spring release.

Your Name. opened as schools were going back in session, so its weekdays won't be able to compare versus Spirited Away's. However, it's still been selling through 20-30% of its available tickets each weekday, so far, despite being in a traditionally weak weekday time of the year. That's an incredible result, and an indicator that's it's reaching beyond the regular moviegoer crowd (being the best reviewed film, by critics and audiences alike, in years doesn't hurt either).

All three films, Your Name. (Fall), Frozen (Spring), and Spirited Away (Summer), were released in completely different times of the year for the box office, so it's pretty much impossible to compare them directly on a day-to-day basis... week-to-week comparisons, while still not exactly fair, is at least somewhat reasonable.
