There are a lot of sexism related buzzwords up there from this past year. Almost 1/3 of the list is related to sexism.

There is the usual share of political entries, too. Japan is getting older and older. Let It Go, Rerigo, Let It Go, Rerigo. Dude looks like a lady this year. Cooking with salted lemons has become popular. High School girls are acting like prostitutes. The public really like their athletes. And apparently a lot of Japanese were getting "revenge porno" on their ex's this past year, too.

We finally have a pretty good weekend ahead after the drought that October and the first-half of November brought with them.

Miracle has numerous stage greetings today which will give it an overwhelming victory today (Saturday), but the stage greetings numbers are trailing those of last year's The Girl in the Sunny Place which opened at a similar time. In admissions, it's very likely to win the weekend, but if it falls hard enough on Sunday, the top spot could be a close race.

Interstellar has so-so morning/afternoon ticket sales and will have to overperform in the evening/night if it wants to debut in 1st place. I originally thought it would do Gravity numbers with a debut over ¥300 million ($3 million), and a total around ¥3 billion ($30 million), but it's not looking too hot right now. I really hope it's backloaded since besides Big Hero 6 next month, Hollywood literally has nothing interesting until next year. Almost their entire Nov/Dec. slate was moved to 2015 (and Mockingjay Part 1 isn't receiving a theatrical release in Japan either after the first two films bombed).

The season 1 recap of the Attack on Titan anime is only playing on 52 screens, but its massive fanbase will give it a proper opening despite it just being a recap of the first 12 or 13 episodes of the anime. These recaps will prepare fans for the big budget live-action films coming next Summer.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Miracle; Interstellar)
It's a little late for me to work on estimates when rankings themselves will be out later, but it looks like Interstellar debuted in 1st place. But it's a close race with only 513 admissions separating it from Miracle at the usual locations (~1/3 of the market), 56,523 vs. 56,010 admissions. Miracle will need a sizable lead in admissions to win the weekend since its avg. ticket price should be much lower than Interstellar's, and I don't think that's going to happen.

But both films didn't do particularly well though, and may have only debuted just barely above the ¥200 million (~$1.7-2.1 million) mark.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking
Weekend Ranking (11/22-23)

01 (--) Interstellar (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
02 (--) Miracle: Devil Claus' Magic and Love (Toho) DEBUT

03 (01) As the Gods Will (Toho) Week 2
04 (02) Pale Moon (Shochiku) Week 2
05 (--) Attack on Titan Season 1 SP: Crimson Bow & Arrow (Pony Canyon) DEBUT
06 (--) Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (Nikkatsu/Toho-Towa) DEBUT

07 (03) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 4
08 (04) Clover (Toho) Week 4
09 (--) Mindset (Toei) DEBUT
10 (05) Twilight Sarasa Saya (Warner Bros.) Week 3

Well, what was looking like a fairly exciting weekend (compared to the last 2 months...) ended up disappointing.

>Interstellar pulls off the #1 debut, but brought in a disappointing ¥193,389,300 ($1.70 million) with 137,490 admissions on 512 screens. The opening is 36% behind Gravity and 25% behind Edge of Tomorrow. Reviews look a bit mixed, and with a long running time, it's probably not going to have great legs. It'll reach the ¥1 billion milestone (~$9/10 million), but even ¥1.5 billion (~$13/15 million) will prove very difficult.

>Miracle: Devil Claus' Magic and Love also disappointed, earning just ¥183,291,500 ($1.61 million) with 133,390 admissions on 302 screens. Given the opening is inflated from stage greetings on Saturday, this isn't very good at all. Seldom do films with stage greetings on opening weekend have much holding ability. It's probably just barely going to break the ¥1 billion milestone (~$9/10 million) itself.

>Attack on Titan: Crimson Bow and Arrow is the only actual highlight of the weekend. The compilation film recapping the first half of Season 1 of the hit anime, is only playing on 53 screens, but managed a Top 5 debut anyway. Pony Canyon hasn't released any figures for the weekend yet, however. It has to be above Journey to the West, though.

The second compilation film recapping the second half of Season 1 opens in the Spring, and will be followed by two big budget live-action films in the Summer. And those are the ones to keep an eye on as they could be really big.

>Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons received a very wide release for a Chinese released of 347 screens, but wasn't able to take advantage of them or of its huge success from China last year. Stephen Chow's fantastical box-office smash just earned ¥62,393,900 ($547,000) with 49,540 admissions over the weekend.

>And finally, Mindset is the latest live-action disappointment for distributor Toei. Playing on 195 screens, it took in a measly ¥42,057,600 ($368,000) with 31,113 admissions. Honestly, if they didn't have the Kamen Rider franchise and hit anime films like One Piece, Dragon Ball or Pretty Cure, their live-action film slate would likely be killing them.

Here's to hoping Takashi Yamazaki strikes once again at the box-office with Parasyte Part 1 this upcoming weekend, following his major blockbuster returns for The Eternal Zero and Stand By Me, Doraemon from this past year.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking; Charts Updating
Interstellar bombing, basically, is yet another huge disappointment from Warner Bros..

Warner Bros. has been doing exceptionally well with their Japanese films over the past few years now, with this year being better than ever, but it's almost like Japanese audiences are rejecting everything from Hollywood they've released since Harry Potter concluded. Everything has either flat out bombed or has ended up a big disappointment since 2011.

Yokai Watch: It's The Secret of Birth, Nyan! advance ticket sales have exceeded 840,000 as of November 27th.

Over the past 4 weeks, it has sold an additional 120,000 tickets ahead of its release. And the film continues its unprecedented pace and remains ahead of every other film in history in advance ticket sales according to distributor Toho before release day.

The first film in the Yokai Watch franchise, Yokai Watch: It's The Secret of Birth, Nyan!, opens December 20th. The second film is already in development for release next December, too.

It would appear we're going have to wait until December 20th for when Yokai Watch and Big Hero 6 open for anything eventful at the box-office again.

Parasyte Part 1 is going to disappoint unless it has a strong evening showing or recovers on Sunday. Morning/afternoon ticket sales are unimpressive and aren't much higher than Fury's so far. It should be the biggest opener since September (sigh) but an opening of this level would be disappointing for what was supposed to be a decent sized hit. This isn't the way Takashi Yamazaki wants to follow up on his back-to-back blockbuster hits (The Eternal Zero and Stand By Me, Doraemon) from earlier this year.

Fury opened pretty well yesterday earning around ¥35/40 million ($300,000-350,000) based on estimates. This should result in an opening weekend around the ¥200 million mark, but perhaps it can do slightly better. All I'm wanting is for something to actually open above the mark; it's been 8-weeks(!) since a film has done so... Fury will also become Kadokawa's biggest release in at least 2, maybe 3+ years.

The Nutcracker (CGI/3D Japanese adaptation) is only playing on 89 screens, but it's doing pretty well and may debut in the Top 10 since that hasn't been a hard task for 2+ months now.

There was an issue with one of the cinema chains that is apart of the usual locations over the weekend, so estimates could be a bit off this weekend (which is why I didn't report anything after Saturday's mid-day report).

Last Monday was a holiday, so weekend drops this weekend should be higher than normal, but they still seem a bit too high to me. I think most will see improvement when figures are released.

Anyway...

>Parasyte Part 1 looks to have safely debuted above the ¥300 million mark, which a film hasn't done since Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends back in September. But the debut is still below expectations and the film will need strong late New Year legs to reach an acceptable total. Takashi Yamazaki's films have all had good to incredible legs, so there's some precedent for it to perhaps follow the same pattern.

Right now, it's looking at a total near ¥2.5 billion ($22-25 million) based on its estimated opening.

>Fury performed quite well and should be above the ¥200 million mark. Its weekend admissions were approx. 18% ahead of Interstellar's from last weekend, but its avg. ticket price could be significant lower given how old it appears to have skewed. If it stays above the ¥200 million mark, it'll join Parasyte Part 1 as the first films to do it since September, but will also be the first imported/Hollywood release since Dawn of the Planet of the Apes from back in September as well.

Legs should be good, so I expect it to reach ¥1.5 billion ($12-15 million) or so.

>The Nutcracker isn't played quite wide enough to gather estimates on, especially with one cinema chain have no data over the weekend; but after the decent morning showing, its day/evening business was so horrible that I highly doubt it made the Top 10.

Weekend Ranking (11/29-30)

Image

01 (--) Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) DEBUT
02 (--) Fury (Kadokawa) DEBUT

03 (01) Interstellar (Warner Bros.) Week 2
04 (03) As the Gods Will (Toho) Week 3
05 (02) Miracle: Devil Claus' Love and Magic (Toho) Week 2
06 (04) Pale Moon (Shochiku) Week 3
07 (05) Attack on Titan Season 1 Recap: Crimson & Bow (Pony Canyon) Week 2
08 (08) Clover (Toho) Week 5
09 (07) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 5
10 (06) Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (Nikkatsu/Toho-Towa) Week 2

>Parasyte Part 1 delivers the biggest opening weekend since Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends back in September, but still had a rather muted debut regardless.

Playing on 418 screens, the first half of Takashi Yamazaki's adaptation of the popular 80's manga earned ¥340,337,300 ($3.0 million) with 256,161 admissions. That's at least 20-30% less than most expectations, and pretty mediocre for a local film playing on 400+ screens, which is very wide for a local film with no more than a handful of films managing the count in most years.

Still, it's... okay. Takashi Yamazaki's films have had great staying power in the past, so let's see what happens with this one. At the moment though, it's looking at a ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) total at best which is... okay. Part 2 is planned for this upcoming Spring.

>Fury opened in 2nd place and actually hit ¥200 million (if only just)! As I've mentioned a lot in the past few weeks, before this weekend, no film has managed open above the mark in 8 weeks. The film grossed ¥200,960,300 ($1.8 million) with 155,667 admissions on 332 screens over the weekend.

Brad Pitt continues to be a solid draw in Japan, and given the film's setting, Kadokawa actually manages to have a hit on their hands. I can't even remember the last Kadokawa release that reached the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) milestone, and Fury could go as high as ¥1.5 billion ($12/13 million) with some luck. Its weekday numbers so far look impressive, too.

>The Nutcracker opened in 12th place (a couple spots higher than I was expecting), but no figures have been released for it yet. Asmik Ace has been in trouble in recent years, as have most independent distributors, so this should be some fairly good news for them. Hopefully Princess Jellyfish can earn them solid take this New Year. They've put quite a bit of effort into the marketing for that one.

So Fury beat Interstellar's opening in Japan and the later's drop in Japan wasn't very encouraging this weekend.

The box-office is finally on an upward trend and should stay that way for awhile.

>After 15 years, the Naruto series saw the release its final chapter a few weeks back. The series ended after 72 volume releases and 700 chapters. And having sold over 130 million books in Japan alone, it's ranked among the Top 10 Best-Selling Manga Series of All-Time (#7, soon to be #6).

To celebrate, The Last: Naruto the Movie opens this weekend and pre-sales are looking really strong so far this morning and into the afternoon. It looks poised to easily open higher than any previous installment, and should have little trouble becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise, too.

How high will it open? It'll net the biggest opening weekend since September with ease and ¥400 million is looking pretty good I'd say, and with some luck, maybe it can even make a run at ¥500 million mark. Naruto is definitely going out on a high note.

>9th/10th place will be interesting to watch over the weekend as several films are vying for the spots. The Bollywood smash hit Dhoom 3 looks like it barely made the Top 10 yesterday, so I'm guessing it has the best chance of the other limited openers. There are also documentary/concert releases for Bump of Chicken and L'Arc-en-Ciel that could surprise.

Mid-Day Report (02:30PM), Saturday (12/06)
Usual Locations Admissions (~25% of market)

40,722 - The Last: Naruto the Movie (NEW)
10,106 (-35%), Parasyte Part 1 (Week 2)
7,595 - Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Star-Voyaging Ark (NEW)
5,462 - Bump of Chicken: Willpolis 2014 (NEW)

4,663 (-55%), Fury (Week 2)
3,783 (-29%), Interstellar (Week 3)
3,558 (-22%), Miracle: Devil Claus' Magic and Love (Week 3)
3,266 (-24%), As the Gods Will (Week 4)
2,389 (-19%), Attack on Titan Season 1 Recap: Crimson Bow & Arrow (Week 3)
1,887 (-42%), Pale Moon (Week 4)

Pretty huge for Naruto. So far, it looks like its opening day is heading towards the ¥250-300 million range, so a ¥500 million opening weekend could certainly be possible if it hits the high end. I'd say it needs to reach 75,000+ admissions for the day at the usual locations to make that happen, and it's over half way there already.

Opening Weekends (and total grosses, really) have either been much higher than expectations, or much lower, and Naruto is certainly opening much higher. There are very few openings (or totals) that have fallen in the "expected" category this past year.

Nice for the newest Space Battleship Yamato spin-off film and the Bump of Chicken concert. Yamato is playing on just 89 screens with the majority accounted for here, so it won't rank nearly that high over the weekend, but maybe it can crack the Top 10. And Bump of Chicken is playing on only 20 screens, which again, are mostly accounted for at the usual locations. I'd be very surprised it reaches the Top 10.

Fury down over 50% right now is a bit concerning, but maybe it won't have a good hold over the weekend afterall. Its weekdays numbers were very solid, which is an indication the audience is primarily older crowds and films that skew older typically have much stronger weekday numbers than weekend numbers. So if it has a large weekend drop, it should still be fine.

But overall, really good holds across the board so far for the day. I hope it looks like this, or better, by the end of weekend.

Saturday Results (12/06)
Usual Locations Admissions (~25% of market)

79,607 - The Last: Naruto the Movie (NEW)
23,985 (-38%), Parasyte Part 1 (Week 2)
13,386 - Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Star-Voyaging Ark (NEW)
11,707 (-52%), Fury (Week 2)
10,266 (-29%), Interstellar (Week 3)
9,865 - Bump of Chicken: Willpolis 2014 (NEW)
7,151 (-24%), Miracle: Devil Claus' Magic and Love (Week 3)
7,700 (-29%), As the Gods Will (Week 4)
4,422 (-22%), Attack on Titan Season 1 Recap: Crimson Bow & Arrow (Week 3)
3,700 (-46%), Pale Moon (Week 4)

Big, very big day for Naruto. With these admissions, its opening day alone is certainly close to the ¥300 million mark, if not slightly over.

Distributor Toho also revealed it was tracking 75% ahead of the last Naruto film as of 3:00PM yesterday. If it stayed at that level throughout the evening and throughout Sunday, it's going to debut above the ¥500 million mark and likely earn over 400,000 admissions in the process. And that would be a huge accomplishment, easily beating any previous Naruto film, and could earn it a Top 10 Opening Weekend for the year.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 performed well enough on Saturday that it's probably going to crack the Top 10 over the weekend. It shouldn't take more than 20,000 admissions to do so, and it's not too far from the figure after Saturday. I'm thinking it could open as high as 8th even.
