Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Estimates (10/10-11)
Weekend Actuals will be posted later, but I wanted to share some Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, opening October 16th, information. For starters, not all theaters have their seating/showtime data available yet, but based on those that have released their allocation for this upcoming weekend, it's likely to be the widest release in Japan box-office history. Some of the busiest locations have it playing 40-45 times a day.

Also, seat reservations began last night (around midnight), and many online servers crashed due to the demand. I wasn't on Twitter last night, but users on 5ch said that Toho Cinemas was trending worldwide as a result. And in just a 2-hour timeframe, roughly midnight to 2am, reports and images were shared of showings already reaching 60% or better before going offline.

Online reservations go offline between 2am-4-6am (depending on the chain), so it's expected to explode again in the next hour when they go back online and servers recover.

This is both surprising, and not surprising. No one was doubting that the film was going to have a monstrous opening, since the series has achieved phenomenon status and has broken records like crazy, but some were questioning if a monster opening weekend, potentially record-breaking, was possible in this environment; and so far, the initial pre-sales and seat reservation status indicates that's likely going to be the case.

>Tenet is now Nolan's second biggest film in Japan, only behind Inception, after another excellent hold. A total north of ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) is locked up now, and it might even get pretty close to reaching the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone. But I wouldn't expect a total quite that high, however, since it's losing all its IMAX screens to Demon Slayer next weekend.

>The Asadas! opened to a so-so result last weekend, but as expected since it's an older-skewing film, it did exceptionally well over the weekdays (around 40% better than its opening weekend) and won't end up with a disappointing total after all. It'll probably end up finishing near the ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) mark.

The Weekend Top 10 is down a respectable 23% versus the same weekend last year.

Next weekend will be the first weekend since the shutdown back in April and May to be up versus last year, and will very likely be the biggest weekend of 2020 so far. And I expect that the following four weeks thereafter (Weeks 43-46) will be up versus last year, too.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/10-11); Charts Update
It definitely appears that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is going to challenge the opening weekend record this weekend, which is still held by The Matrix Reloaded (since previews were added back then) since 2003.

That's a major claim to make several days out, especially in the modern era of the box-office (2010-) which excludes previews from opening weekends, but this is truly on a different level from anything I've (we've) seen. The seating and showings counts are going to be record-setting, quite easily it seems, as it's occupying at least half of every theater's screen count, in addition to playing an average around 30 times a day at nearly every location.

And despite the record number of screens, seating, and showtimes, it's already starting to sell out many showings ahead of the weekend on both Friday and Saturday. Some members on 5ch are estimating that it's already sold around 20% of all its available seats on just Friday and Saturday (which could be over 500,000 already) after 12 hours of going online. And that looks accurate to me, as theaters in the busiest prefectures are already nearing 50% sold out on both Friday and Saturday.

And seat reservations at Aeon Cinemas is STILL offline due to the servers being down after 13 hours of going online. Aeon Cinemas has the most theaters in the country, but they're not the busiest chain so their servers clearly weren't able to handle the demand this film is presenting. They've issued an apology and are asking customers to purchase their ticket and reserve their seating in person on their website and on Twitter.

It reminds me a bit of the Yôkai Watch mania a few years ago (December 2014 I believe).

Yeah, in terms of how quickly it's selling out. The biggest difference, and this is key, is that Demon Slayer will be playing on twice as many screens, has double (or more) the amount of seating, and maybe three since as many showtimes.

And of course the two films are appealing to drastically different demographics. Yo-Kai Watch was over 90% very young children (10 and under) and their families, while Demon Slayer has been attracting a much broader audience ranging from teens to middle-aged adults. There's already discussion about how helpful the 6/7AM start time is on Friday across many locations, as it gives people time to see the movie first thing in the morning and still have time to get to work or class. That showing is one of the most popular right now and is approaching sold out status across the country.

I'll have more data throughout each day leading up to its release on Friday, but sales haven't slowed down in the slightest. Many of the busiest locations were approaching 50% sold out status, but are easily in the 60-70% range now for both Friday and Saturday, three/four days out. And keep in mind that most of these locations have it playing across 5, 6 screens or more, and have it playing 30-40 times a day. Aeon Cinemas online reservation system is still offline due to the traffic, almost 24-hours later.

Also of note, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is rated PG-12. The biggest opening weekend held by an animated film that's rated PG-12 (or higher) is still Princess Mononoke, so that record is going to get blown away after 23-years. And, of course, if it does take the overall opening weekend record away from The Matrix Reloaded, it'll break all sorts of records.

Reservations are now reaching 70-80% at many rural locations for both Friday and Saturday, including theaters that have given it a record-setting 10,000-15,000+ seats from their 30-40+ showings each day. It appears that nearly all theaters located in Japan's 8 urban prefectures will be sold out or almost entirely booked (90/95% capacity) over the weekend.

And the rural theaters are also giving it record-setting screens/showtimes, many allocating at least half of their screens and giving it up to or over 20 showings, for totals of 5,000 or more seats, but a lot are going to be sold out as well. Just counted one rural location that has sold 4,561 tickets out of its available 5,745 for Friday and 4,053 out of its 5,976 for Saturday.

Reservations began just 24 hours ago. Volume 22 of the manga just sold 2.2 million copies last week in only 3 days (excluding digital!), second biggest first week on record, so it's not unreasonable to expect those same people (or more if you consider the non-manga readers) to come out this weekend.

And to help just show the scale, since saying 70/80% of seats are now sold across 30-40 showtimes may not be a good visual, here are the Namba Toho Cinemas's Friday ticket sales::

Toho Cinemas Namba (Friday): [5,746/8,685, 66% full]

IMAX [1,843/2,260, 82% full]:
08:00 - 326/452 10:40 - 342/452
13:20 - 350/452 19:05 - 451/452
21:45 - 374/452

Standard [3,903/6,425, 61% full]:
07:00 - 103/181 07:30 - 234/335
08:10 - 58/118 08:20 - 103/270
09:40 - 107/181 10:10 - 268/335
10:50 - 55/118 11:00 - 135/270
11:10 - 25/79 11:40 - 42/94
12:20 - 63/181 12:50 - 250/335
13:35 - 59/118 13:50 - 134/270
15:00 - 92/181 15:15 - 43/94
15:30 - 257/335 15:55 - 36/79
16:15 - 65/118 16:30 - 156/270
17:40 - 140/181 18:10 - 305/335
18:30 - 84/94 18:55 - 106/118
19:15 - 252/270 20:20 - 179/181
20:40 - 76/79 20:50 - 325/335
21:55 - 151/270

That's after almost exactly 24 hours since reservations began, and 3 days (2 if you want to get technical now) before it opens. Namba is one of the Top 20/25 busiest theaters in the country, and all the others as busy as it are at these levels, too, and those that are "slower" will certainly be there soon.

I saw in your release schedule that it was given 375 screens. Why aren't they giving it more ? I believe it was either a One Piece or a DBZ movie that got like 700 screens once...

edit : It was One Piece Gold, it got 743 screens.

That's 375 theaters. Theater counts are determined weeks/months in advance, but screen counts are determined usually the week of release.

350 theaters is about as high as any film gets, 360/370 if a major multi-format release (IMAX, 3D, etc.). I don't think 375 is a record, I remember 381 being the record (not sure what it was though), but it's up there.

The screen count hasn't been reported yet, but it'll be very, very high. It's going to be the widest release in Japan's box-office history in seating and showtimes, and likely screen count. The theater count fell just a few shy, I think.

Here's another major location, another one among the Top 20 busiest in the country, but also one with some of the larger screens, including the famous Darth Vader helmet shaped 733-seater. And almost 70% of its 10,000+ allocated seats were filled after 24-hours of reservations starting.

And as I post these, the Saturday ticket sales are on par or even better at certain locations. Friday, despite these insane ticket sales, is still a weekday in the end, and Saturday and Sunday are expected to be bigger (where possible). The 08:40am stage greeting broadcast showing at every theater nationwide is currently sold out on Saturday.

There are even 5 of its 32 showings (3 being on the 630 screen) on Sunday that are over half full, too.

Hello! New member here. How high are you estimating its overall total Corpse? Does it have a shot at reaching ¥10bn? Or is it too early to predict?

Welcome. :)

While it's early, the general consensus among us (myself and members of movie boards like 5ch) is that it has a real shot at reaching ¥10 billion (~$100 million). Some are expecting more. Others are expecting much, much more.

This may sound crazy and impossible, but there's real talk about it selling over 1 million admissions on each of its first three days of release (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). No film has ever sold 1 million admissions in a single day, and the opening weekend record itself is below 1.5 million admissions. So... we could be looking at it not just breaking the opening weekend record, but possibly beating it by more than 500,000.

An opening day above 1 million admissions; an opening weekend above 2 million admissions; and a 3-day total above 3 million admissions is looking possible. Not likely by any means, these are truly absurd numbers to throw out, but it's in the realm of possibility.

It needs to average around 2,700 admissions at all of its locations each day, and it's becoming very difficult to even FIND a location that hasn't sold that many in reservations alone (or is on course to) 2 days before release. You have to check very rural locations to do so (mostly because they can barely make that count, if at all, due to lack of screens), but the urban locations that are giving it 10,000 seats or more easily make up for them as they're already well over 50% full (70%+ has been breached at many of them).

MOVIX Kawaguchi (2,999/4,835) 62%

MOVIX Hiyoshizu (1,879/3,743) 50%
MOVIX Shunan (1,385/4,380) 32%

Here's a list of MOVIX locations as of Wednesday, ~9PM (ticket sold/seat available). This is about 45 hours after reservations began. ~34 hours until it opens. MOVIX is a mid-sized chain with average business, so these numbers are pretty staggering. As you can see, some are already over 50% full, and it's likely even the slower locations which are already between 20-30% full will get near 50% before it opens, and obviously go well beyond 50% with walk-ups and day of ticket sales.

A sell-rate of ~80% of all seats nationwide is being discussed as a possibility. ~30-40% of seats are estimated to have been sold nationwide at this point on both Friday and Saturday.

Aeon Cinemas online reservations went back online last night after being offline for over 30 hours due to the demand, so we'll have data from them soon.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Aiming To Break OW Record
To anyone that follows the usual locations solo or on 5ch, the system goofed up in calculating Friday seating. This upcoming Friday is the first Friday to be back at 100%, but the system calculated the seating at 50% capacity versus 100%... Quite annoying, but it's being worked on right now. Here's hoping it's corrected heading into the weekend frame itself.

That said, it did calculate the number of showings correctly since that's the same either way, and the number of Friday showings totaled 4,953 at 267 theaters (~70% of the market). That's far and away a new record, beating Frozen 2's 3,695 showings. Frozen 2 had 1,066,153 seats at the usual locations for Friday, currently the record, so we can likely expect Demon Slayer to have broken that easily with 1.3/1.4 million seats.

If we assume it has 1.3/1.4 million seats available at the usual locations (~70% of the market) on Friday, then its nationwide seating is likely around 1.8/1.9 million. It would need to reach ~52-55% capacity or so to become the first film to ever sell 1 million admissions in one-day. We know it's going to reach that % capacity for sure based on reservations, so if the seating calculations are accurate enough, it's probably going to do it.

That's no typo. Over 6,100 showings at the usual locations (~70% of the market), resulting in an average 23 showings per theater (14 was the old record...). It was definitely going to be the widest release ever from just looking at various theaters this week, but it basically doubled everything!

And Saturday's numbers are likely to be even bigger. All the other films above are their first Saturday numbers because it was higher than their Friday, since Saturday traditionally allows for more seating/showtimes. So when Demon Slayer's Saturday seating comes out tomorrow, it'll be even higher in comparison.

Hard to believe we're on the cusp of a record breaking performance. Never imagined that would be possible given the current challenges theaters are facing. I'm not familiar with this franchise, but is it expected to be very frontloaded?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Aiming To Break OW Record
I imagine there will be some frontloading, but there's going to be a lot spillover after the weekend is over. Theaters in Japan are still operating at 50% capacity on the weekdays (but 100% on the weekends), so its legs will likely get a boost from this as business will be spread out a bit. Also, since Hollywood continues to delay their films, there's not going to be as much competition this year for it to deal with. Since the series has achieved phenomenon status, well beyond just its very large fanbase, it could behave abnormally strong weeks following its opening weekend. We'll have to wait and see.

****************************

It's a relatively new franchise. And it's basically the biggest brand in Japan right now. Here's a rundown of it since others are probably wondering how the hell is a film about to potentially break the opening weekend record, which has been intact since 2003(!) right now:

The manga launched back in 2016, and it actually concluded earlier this year. The anime debuted last year, and it was a major success. Everyone looks back at Episode 19 (admittingly, one of the best anime episodes I've ever seen as well) as the real turning point from just being a popular anime to becoming the social phenomenon the series is today.

And following season one's conclusion last fall, the manga sales exploded to record-setting levels. So far, 22 volumes have been released (only one left, likely releasing in December or January), and they have sold over 70 million copies in Japan in just the past eleven months alone (80 million overall), doubling the previous yearly sales record. Volume 22 just sold 2.2 million copes in just 3-days (and that doesn't include any digital sales) last week. And sales exceeded 100 million worldwide last week, too. It's the fastest selling manga to reach every milestone from 40 million copies onward, and it's the fastest manga to reach 100 million worldwide.

In addition to the anime's incredible reception propelling the manga sales to previously thought unfathomable levels, the anime's opening song went on to become the best selling anime single of all time in Japan, thus also making history in the music scene as well, furthering its reach to people.

Recently, Fuji TV has been broadcasting season one of the anime the past two Saturday's leading up to the release of the film (the first 13 episodes on October 3rd, the last 13 episodes on October 10th) during a special 7-hour program that featured interviews with the cast. And, this past Saturday's broadcast (which features the now famous 19th episode) earned a ridiculously high 16.7% household rating, with no hour dipping below 11.4%. So a lot of people clearly took advantage of this and were able to catch up on it ahead of seeing the movie this weekend.

And finally, the movie, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, has taken a different approach from the typical anime film. Instead of being an original, non-canon story like nearly every anime film out there, this film is actually continuing immediately where season one of the anime left off by adapting the next story arc of the manga. It's a short high-action and very emotional arc, and should work perfect as a film adaptation. So it's a must-see for everyone: both for manga readers wishing to see it adapted to the big screen; and for anime fans who are caught up now, awaiting to see where the story goes after season one of the anime.
