Yes http://www.disney.co.jp/movie/remember-me.html

Variety estimated the final number
Kamen Rider: $13.2M
Destiny: $13M
Murder: $9M (Ouch! I'm kinda expect $13M)

Name changes fascinate me. I wonder why they did that. What makes them think Remember Me will help its performance more than Coco. Does Coco sound dirty in Japanese?

I like Mark, but all of those projections are silly. Kamen Rider likely won't go that high (would need well above franchise standard legs); Destiny won't go that low (that's almost $10 million lower than Yamazaki's last film, which opened lower); and Murder definitely won't finish that low (that suggests an absurdly low 4.5 multiplier).

The majority of imported films receive name changes in Japan. If the title isn't changed altogether, then subtitles are typically added, such as Moana and the Legendary Sea or Merida and the Horror Forest, for just a couple examples I can recall regarding Disney animation.

Oh, and an interesting one, still in regard to Disney animation, was Big Hero 6 becoming Baymax -- one of few examples of a title being shorted and changed.

Another interesting change is the Fast and Furious franchise. In Japan they're called Wild Speed Max: [insert subtitle].

>Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FINAL: Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Riders, the 57th theatrical release in the long-running Kamen Rider film franchise, debuts atop the box office, selling an impressive 303,089 admissions across 331 screens.

This opening is the eighth biggest among the Heisei era (1992-) films, and the biggest in the franchise in five years. The Kamen Rider franchise is naturally frontloaded, and none of the films in the past several years have been capable of reaching the ¥1 billion milestone; however, this film looks to break that trend and should be the first film in quite some time to finally achieve the milestone. Expect a total around ¥1.2 billion (~$11 million).

>Destiny: The Tale of Kakamura, the latest film from director Takashi Yamazaki, settles for second place, selling a decent 231,465 admissions across 401 screens. This debut is just 4% higher than Yamazaki's previous film, The Man They Called Pirate, so a total between ¥2.0-2.5 billion (~$18-22 million) is likely given the positive reception and similar release date.

Distributor Toho was certainly hoping for more, I'm sure, since this was their major live-action tentpole for December, but unfortunately for them they'll have to be content and wish for a more lucrative 2018.

>Murder on the Orient Express debuts in third place, selling 169,100 admissions over the weekend frame on 455 screens, and 231,465 admissions since opening on Friday. The third place start may look unimpressive, but the opening itself is solid and almost earned Fox their biggest opening weekend of 2017 (only behind Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children).

Unless a film is largely fanbase driven (e.g. Kamen Rider), films released in mid-December often develop great legs, with one or two sometimes approaching multipliers as high as 10 (or higher) -- I'm expecting the Orient Express to potentially be one of those films. Expect a total between ¥1.5-2 billion (~$13-18 million).

>Girls und Panzer: The Finale - Part 1 comes in fourth place, selling 118,798 admissions across just 59 screens. This debut is 14% higher than the 2015 Girls und Panzer film, but unlike that film, I'm doubting Part 1 will have anywhere near the longevity it mustered. Expect a total near ¥1 billion (~$10 million), perhaps?

>Fullmetal Alchemist experiences a steep second weekend decline, certainly not the result Warner Bros. was wanting to see after an underwhelming debut last weekend. The film will be a target for severe screen/showtime cuts next weekend, so will be unlikely to take much advantage of the upcoming holidays. Expect a disappointing total around ¥1.5 billion (~$13 million).

>IT is still performing well and is approaching the ¥2 billion (~$18 million) milestone in its sixth weekend of release. It'll exceed the mark over the next weekend, becoming one of just a handful of horror films to ever achieve the milestone. Expect a finish around ¥2.3 billion ($20/21 million).

Haha, great stuff!

Wild Speed Max? Is there any Max that I don't remember from the series :O

That is indeed very intriguing.

That was actually an improvement.

Can you check this one? The JP *ch boards (https://lavender.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/movie/1513003802/96) have it at ¥85,340,900 after its second weekend. It did the ¥41,957,400 number in its opening three-day weekend.

That is the correct figure. Its total wasn't up to date for some reason when I posted the actuals yesterday.

It isn't being pulled entirely on December 21st. Their message is just a notice that the film begins losing theaters at their locations beginning then.

I just checked a few dozen locations, and while close dates are scheduled for December 21st (or the 22nd), others are still TBD (including Toho locations). There's also some locations where it ends this weekend (December 15th). I didn't check all of its 161 theaters, but based on the ones I scanned, I'd say it's losing around 50% of its theaters from December 15th-22nd and will go limited (<100 theaters) as the New Year approaches.

No figure was released for it this week, which is an indication that its weekly earnings has become minuscule. Last week it was at ¥342 million coming off a ¥25 million third weekend. ¥400 million (~$3.5 million) will be its ceiling based on that and also suffering significant theater loss before the holidays begin.

$60 million is way too low. That'd actually be less than ¥7 billion, meaning it would come in way below The Force Awakens (a whopping 40%+ decline) and considerably below all three prequels.

The Last Jedi honestly shouldn't drop too much from Episode VII. I would be surprised if it dropped more than 10-15%, and I'm expecting a gross around ¥9 billion ($80 million), but ¥10 billion ($90 million) is certainly doable.

Its admissions for Friday, thus far, are very encouraging. I'll provide regular updates beginning tomorrow evening, and throughout the weekend with an hour-by-hour comparison versus Episode VII.

In an hour or so I'll post the pre-sales for the weekend (Saturday) for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and compare them to both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Then, beginning in 4/5 hours, I'll provide hourly admission updates comparing the three throughout the weekend.

Of note: The Last Jedi beat Rogue One's Friday by a whopping 84% based on estimates, earning around ¥475 million ($4.1/4.2 million) on ~300,000 admissions. The Force Awakens didn't receive a proper Friday release, so I can't draw any comparison there. In Japan, Episode VII was released on Friday evening, kind of like how films receive early showings on Thursday evenings in the U.S..

Also, Yo-Kai Watch: Shadowside - Resurrection of the Demon King, the fourth film in the franchise, opens today and I may or may not post hourly admissions updates for it since it seems on track for a sizable decline this year and won't compete with Episode VIII for the #1 spot, unlike the Star Wars vs. Yo-Kai Watch opening battles of the last two years (Star Wars #1 in gross; Yo-Kai Watch #1 in admissions both years).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Pre-Sales (Star Wars)
Saturday Advance Ticket Sales (One-Third of Market)

Advance Tickets/Available Tickets [Theaters/Showings] - Film
138,795/463,289 [155/1,795], Star Wars: The Force Awakens
126,032/441,270 [163/1,645], Star Wars: The Last Jedi
65,696/400,496 [160/1,659], Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Episode VIII is only down 9% compared to Episode VII in advance ticket sales for the day, and up a massive 92% versus Rogue One.

Since it's nearly doubling Rogue One (Friday +84% and +92% in pre-sales today), I'm not going to bother updating Rogue One alongside it throughout the weekend. Rogue One was clearly viewed as a side-story and nothing else, really, by Japanese audiences.

And Yo-Kai Watch 4 is down almost 50% versus last year's film in advance ticket sales for the day. The films are becoming less frontloaded in the franchise, so I doubt it'll actually end up dropping anywhere near that much (especially since its pre-sales are down 14% versus the most recent Pokemon film, which opened to ¥516 million), but the drop is certainly significant enough to not really track it all weekend -- I'll just provide an update each day concerning its performance.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Last Jedi - Hourly Admissions Updates
A strong, if not a relatively slow start (off 29% versus Episode VII). However, only 16% of its showtimes played before 10am, which is below the average that's typically a bit closer to 20% (depending on the film).

To exceed ¥1 billion over the weekend (and ¥1.5 billion for the 3-day), it'll probably need a minimum of 250,000 admissions (37% capacity) for the day from the locations (two-thirds of the market) above. I'd say it's on track for ~225,000 (33% capacity) or so based on the first update, so it needs to pick up later.

There we go -- much better update. The Last Jedi is currently tracking a respectable ~15% behind The Force Awakens at this early time of day.

The Last Jedi is now tracking 4% ahead of The Force Awakens! Morning sales were a little discouraging, but as the afternoon arrives, it's seeing major gains. Episode VII performed extremely well as the day progressed, so let's see if Episode VIII can keep pace later.

The Last Jedi is tracking 11% behind The Force Awakens near the mid-day point, and it's unlikely to change significantly from this point on (probably being down between 5-15%). It's on track to exceed 250,000-275,000 admissions today (37-41% capacity) from the locations above (two-thirds of the market), and will probably join the ¥1 billion+ opener club.

On another weekend note: Yo-Kai Watch 4 is down 38% compared to its predecessor last December, and while this is much better than the ~50% it was down in advance ticket sales, it's yet another steep decline for the franchise. It's going to do ¥400 million or so, at best, over the weekend.
