Saturday Admissions (12/20)
Usual Locations (~1/3 of the Market)

262,682 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (NEW)
83,537 - Big Hero 6 (NEW)

22,131 (-15%) - Ao Haru Ride (Week 2)
21,833 - The Vancouver Asahi (NEW)
18,722 (-30%) - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 2)
14,752 (-11%) - Gone Girl (Week 2)
14,330 (-40%) - The Last: Naruto the Movie (Week 3)
10,677 (-26%) - Parasyte Part 1 (Week 4)
9,422 (-26%) - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 2)
6,542 (-05%) - Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Week 2)

Yo-Kai Watch sold 87% of its available tickets across all 4 cinema chains reported in the usual locations above. The only seats that were empty were some of those at the latest showtimes (after 9PM), nearly every showtime was sold out from 7AM-9PM.

It recorded the biggest opening day ever that anyone is aware of, in attendance at least, in the process.

And with the admissions here, it should have earned over 700,000 admissions on Saturday, if not 800,000 admissions. Its opening day alone is far bigger than an other film's opening weekend this year except for (and it's a maybe) Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends.

Yo-Kai Watch is currently outpacing the top debuts from earlier this year at the usual locations by...

1.98x greater than Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends
2.18x greater than Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension
2.94x greater than Frozen
2.96x greater than Stand By Me, Doraemon
3.21x greater than Maleficent
3.46x greater than Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno
3.72x greater than Godzilla
4.53x greater than Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie

Sunday looks just as strong, maybe stronger, with sell outs across the majority of the country up to the late night. It still looks on track for over 1.5 million admissions, setting a new attendance record, and could handily beat the old record by a couple hundred thousand admissions. Still looks like 1.6-1.8 million admissions is the range.

*Stage Greeting/Discount Day boost.

It sold 91% of its available tickets across Toho Cinemas on Saturday, and more than doubles everything else's opening day at except for The Wind Rises, but beating it by 57% is absolutely incredible, too.

And very strong for Big Hero 6, too, even if it's greatly benefitting from Yo-Kai Watch sell outs.

Why would Big Hero come out on the same day as Yokai Watch? That seems like sabotage. Big Hero has a Japanese protagonist and takes place in a hybrid Japanese/American city. Seems like it could have made a lot more if it didn't open against the biggest movie ever...

Big Hero 6 is actually doing great. It looks likely to top ¥500 million over the weekend, and could even do ¥600 million+ if Sunday is strong (it's currently up over Saturday right now).

That puts its opening way above any of Disney Animation's past works (except for Frozen, but it won't be much less), and looks to be above the majority of Pixar's films as well. It can definitely earn over ¥5 billion ($45/50 million+).

The big question is how inflated is Big Hero 6's opening from the huge Yo-Kai Watch spillover. And this will remain a question for at least a week as Yo-Kai Watch is beginning to sell out showtimes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday already, too. Parents and their children will continue to make it their #2 choice if they can't get tickets to Yo-Kai Watch.

In Japan, if people can't see their #1 choice due to mass sellouts, everything else benefits from the spillover, where as in the US and most other markets, everything usually suffers from a major film opening. Drops this weekend are looking excellent across the board; only one or two films look like they'll drop over 30%.

It's hard to say... first film in the franchise and all makes it impossible to compare it to anything, especially considering how massive it is. It has a very wide range. Without knowing its opening weekend yet...

¥5/6 billion ($45/55 million) should be the absolute minimum, and that'd be giving it some very, very poor legs, especially for this time of year. ¥7/8 billion ($60/70 million) is probably the most realistic/conservative range. ¥10 billion or higher ($90/$100 million+) wouldn't be impossible, but should be a challenge since legs shouldn't be too great because it'll likely begin to fall hard come mid-January since its main audience are elementary aged children and pre-teens.

Its box-office is going to be absolutely humongous from now until mid-January, though. We will possibly see some records broken for highest total/admissions after one week/two weeks, and its second/third weekends themselves might be record setting. New Year is always massive for family/children films, and there's nothing more popular with them than Yo-Kai Watch right now.

Yo-Kai Watch is outpacing its Saturday ticket sales at the usual locations at the same point in time (1PM) by 11% so far today. It sold through 87% of its tickets yesterday, so it must be over 90% for Sunday right now.

Here are some of the pictures captured:

Very nice for Yo-Kai Watch. I caught a couple episodes of the anime but didn't seem great at that time.

49,702 (+25%) - Big Hero 6 (NEW)

19,170 (+69%) - Ao Haru Ride (Week 2)

6,691 (+39%) - Parasyte Part 1 (Week 4)
6,165 (+11%) - Gone Girl (Week 2)[/size]

*% increases over yesterday*

As of 02:30PM, Yo-Kai Watch has sold 88% of its available tickets for the day at the usual locations.

There is also an estimate for its opening day - ¥870 million ($7.5 million). In admissions, using a similar avg. ticket as Pokemon/Doraemon, it'd be around 780,000-800,000 admissions. Opening day figures are rarely reported, but it seems unlikely anything has ever had near 800,000 admissions in a single day in the past.

The Matrix Reloaded, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix would be the only three candidates to have done it in the past.

More updates should follow soon.

But it's not Japanese. It's American. So the Japs will dislike it.

Weekend Admissions (12/20-21)
Usual Locations (~1/3 of the Market)

513,688 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (NEW)
169,973 - Big Hero 6 (NEW)

44,733 (-23%) - Ao Haru Ride (Week 2)
42,651 - The Vancouver Asahi (NEW)
34,926 (-43%) - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 2)

21,345 (-62%) - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 2)
15,590 (-65%) - Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Week 2)

>Yo-Kai Watch ended up selling 82% of its available weekend admissions at the usual locations.

Most of the data is suggesting its weekend admissions are between 1.4-1.7 million. It's guaranteed to have opened higher than any local film before, with the record being 1.140 million admissions held by One Piece Film Z which beat Howl's Moving Castle's 8-year standing record of 1.104 million admissions two years ago.

Yo-Kai Watch needs 1.487 million to break the All-Time Opening Weekend Record in Admissions. It's going to come down to how well it played at Aeon Cinemas over the weekend. They have more screens and theaters than Toho Cinema's operates now, and family/children films generally play better at Aeon than at Toho, so I'd say chances are pretty good that it's over 1.5 million admissions for the weekend, but it's not locked. *Suspense*

Projecting a gross for its opening becomes more difficult. Using Pokemon's ticket prices as a comparison, it would have earned around ¥1.4-1.6 billion over the weekend. But if we use Doraemon, then it's more like ¥1.6-1.8 billion. The difference in the avg. ticket price of Pokemon and Doraemon isn't very much, but with the amount of admissions we're talking here, it greatly changes the estimated gross for Yo-Kai Watch.

We'll know in the morning unless it's reported otherwise.

>Big Hero 6 did very well in the face of Yo-Kai Watch. However it may or may not have benefited from sellouts, it's only about 20/25% less than Frozen's opening weekend based on the admissions from the usual locations.

It's easier to project weekend figures for it with the smaller (though very impressive) numbers. Its weekend admissions should be between 425,000-475,000, for a weekend gross of about ¥550-625 million ($4.7-5.4 million). And during this time of year, that should easily net it close to ¥5 billion or more ($45 million+).

I'll post some Weekend Estimates in a little bit.

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan doesn't look like it will set the All-Time Opening Weekend Record in Revenue thanks to its very low avg. ticket prices (overwhelming child audience), but it has the admissions to have still broken the All-Time Opening Weekend Record in Admissions based on estimates (very borderline).

And it seems very likely to have broken the All-Time Opening Weekend Record for a domestic film in revenue, and doing so in admissions is nearly a 100% lock.

I'll update the All-Time Opening Records after this post to show where the rough estimates have it ranking.

>Big Hero 6 delivered a very impressive opening. Based on estimates, it only trails Frozen (~21%) as Walt Disney Animation's biggest opening in Japan, and is higher than most of Pixar's opening in the market as well (behind Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo, Monsters University and The Incredibles).

Many films this time of year can approach multipliers of 8, 9, and 10+, and Big Hero 6 should be no different. Expect a total between ¥5-6 billion ($45-55 million) right now, which will be enough to make it Want Disney Animation's 2nd biggest film ever by edging out Dinosaur, and of course, behind Frozen.

>The Vancouver Asahi[/b] got off to a slow start, but legs will surely be strong. It'll probably earn around ¥1.5 billion ($12/13 million), but a ¥2 billion hit would have been nice here.

Yo-kai Watch to Air in U.S., Europe, Other Regions Globally

Level-5 president Akihiro Hino announced at the Eiga Yōkai Watch Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan! event on Saturday that the anime Yōkai Watch will be broadcast overseas. Hino specifically mentioned America and Europe, but said there would be other regions.

Hino stated that, although many of the Yo-kai's names will be changed, Jibanyan and Whisper's will remain the same. He asked the characters' respective voice actors, Etsuko Kozakura and Tomokazu Seki, to "study English."

Big Hero 6 has a very slight chance at making the Top 25 if estimates are low, but it's probably just going to miss. Not that that's bad! Its debut is very, very strong. Only one other Disney Animation film is in the Top 25 (Frozen), along with 4 Pixar films.

Given its success, it should have the best chance at becoming the next Pokemon overseas since Digimon. We'll see what happens next year. :mer:

Anyway, the opening weekend is confirmed to have exceeded ¥1.6 billion. No actual or admissions figure has been released yet, however. But it looks like the estimates above were pretty dead on this weekend (unlike last week).

So, at the moment it's claimed:

>The all-time opening record for a local film
>The all-time opening record for any animated film
>The all-time opening weekend record for an original film
>A top 10 (#7-10 depending on the actual) all-time opening weekend ranking.

The big one though will be if it earned the all-time opening record in admissions. Previews are no longer included in opening weekends (2011-), so this may be the one of the only chances this record has of ever being broken.

If the actual of 1,484,916 admissions is correct, you can blame the distributor for not booking one (!) more screen to get the record....

I know! It came so close. 1,828 admissions short. :pinch:

Part of me likes when old records hold up for so long, but this was probably the only chance of the record falling.

I'll post the Weekend Ranking much later today (gotta work).

Toho, very honest. If this was Paramount, they'd take from Monday to make the record.

Post Re: JP Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (Yo-Kai Watch; Big Hero 6
I think smashing the domestic opening in gross (which had stood for 10 years) and admissions was satisfyingly enough. :P But yeah, I haven't noticed any suspicious numbers ever coming from Toho or any other distributor in the past.

Weekend Ranking (12/20/21)

01 (--) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) DEBUT
02 (--) Big Hero 6 (Disney) DEBUT

03 (02) Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 2
04 (--) The Vancouver Arsashi (Toho) DEBUT
05 (01) The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Warner Bros.) Week 2
06 (03) The Last: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 3
07 (07) Gone Girl (Fox) Week 2
08 (06) Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 4
09 (04) Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Toei) Week 2
10 (05) Aikatsu! The Movie (Toei) Week 2

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! delivered one of the biggest weekends of all-time. The first film in the insanely popular multimedia series that began just last year earned ¥1,628,893,000 ($14.0 million) with 1,484,916 admissions on 408 screens.

Most notably, it achieved:

>The 2nd biggest opening weekend in admissions in history (1,827 shy of #1); 9th in gross.
>The biggest opening weekend for any domestic film.
>The biggest opening weekend for any original/first entry film.
>The biggest opening weekend for any animated film.
>The biggest opening weekend for any film released in December.
>83% of its available seats across the country were sold out over the weekend.

It's difficult to predict where it goes from here, however, it performed well on Monday, especially for a film with an overwhelming child audience (most schools weren't on Winter break yesterday). And Tuesday (today), while a national holiday (Emperor's Birthday), looks very, very strong. Perhaps strong enough to break ¥500 million ($4.5/5.0 million+). So far, it isn't showing any signs of outright collapsing.

At worst, it should earn around ¥7.5 billion (~$60/65 million) / 6.6 million admissions with very poor legs. Most likely, it'll earn about ¥9.0 billion (~$75/80 million) / 8.1 million admissions with expected or average legs. And at best, it can reach over ¥10 billion ($100 million+) and 10 million admissions. It has a very wide without any film to compare it against, so we'll have to wait and see what happens next.

>Big Hero 6 was completely overshadowed over the weekend, but managed to hold its own very well and grossed ¥600,410,500 ($5.2 million) with 463,556 admissions on 540 screens. It achieved Disney Animation's 2nd biggest opening weekend ever, behind Frozen, and is on par or greater than most of Pixar's films.

As for a projected total...it has a good chance of reaching ¥5 billion (~$45/50 million) / 3.5 million admissions, but could go a bit higher still. Achieving a multiplier near 10 (or higher) isn't uncommon this time of year, so a total closer to ¥6 billion (~$50/55 million) / 4.5 million admissions is doable.

>The Vancouver Asashi struggled out of the dugout in its first weekend. Playing on 342 screens, the film earned just ¥157,739,300 ($1.4 million) with 124,191 admissions. The avg. ticket price is in-between a film that skews very young (children/teens) and very old (seniors), which is rare in Japan. This suggests its audience is primarily adult males with some older folks thrown into the mix. And to support this claim, its Monday result was very good.

Films that skew strongly towards adults/seniors have strong weekdays, so I wouldn't count the film as a disappointment just yet. It'll have no problem exceeding ¥1.0 billion ($8-10 million), and I wouldn't be surprised if it made closer to ¥1.5 billion or more ($13-15 million).

Dream5 and King Cream Soda collaborated a couple months back to put together a video of them going to watch the Yo-Kai Watch movie in a theater while performing a medley of their #1 singles from the video games/anime.

They then asked fans to send in videos of themselves singing/dancing to the songs that could be included in a music video that was released this weekend:

Less than the first if it follows the Pokemon franchise (1st film was its peak)... but I think there could be a little room for more growth. The franchise launched just last year and really exploded back in the Summer, so it's very fresh.

Several theaters added screens in the middle of the week since it was selling out the whole weekend days in advance, so I feel it could have gone a bit higher if it received a wider release. However, it sold 83% of its available weekend tickets... that won't be easy to accomplish again, for any film.

Yo-Kai Watch has been confirmed by Toho to be an annual December event, though, so it'll be interesting to watch its performance for a few years.
