Corpse : Demon Slayer is the only film in history to ever have had a single-day come in over ¥1 billion (and it managed to have eight of them), and nothing can be compared to it, past, present, or future, since it's in a league of its own many times over. No one has compared Evangelion to Demon Slayer yet, but just in case they do and for any other film in the future, exclude Demon Slayer from any comparisons since nothing will come close to it in our lifetimes.

Not even a DEMON SLAYER sequel?

The question. :mer:

Never say never. But it will require a repeat of the biggest perfect storm to ever hit.

The biggest issue to prevent a sequel or any other film to come in at a decent position on a lot of charts now is capacity. Relative to other countries, Japan is small in terms of area size and doesn't have a lot of theaters or screens. Demon Slayer played on almost 60% of all screens in the entire country, an unprecedented number by a significant margin, and nearly doubled the number of showtimes any film had ever seen before by playing up to/over 40 times a day at many locations. And it then managed to sell over 75% out all those seats/showtimes a couple times, and did it again with days over 50% capacity.

If something, say the next Demon Slayer film, can do the same in regards to monopolizing the country's screens and showtimes and end up selling out a clear majority of them (60/70%+), then it becomes a possibility. It's just not reasonable to expect another film to get so many screens or showings ever again due to the circumstances that the first film opened under AND maintain that status for several weeks thereafter.

The final Evangelion REALLY delivered today. Waiting on the final hours to wrap up, but its opening day (Monday) is bigger than the opening day or first Saturday (whichever is bigger) of every film since 2015 except for Demon Slayer and Frozen II.

I don't know exactly how much 4d showings are gonna inflate its average ticket price, but it should fall just short of getting the biggest monday, right? Still an amazing opening though.

It's going to be close. But I think it'll claim the record. Its average ticket price will be pretty high, likely close to ¥1,600 since it sold out most (nearly all) of its IMAX and 4DX showings. 3.0 back in 2012 had an average ticket price of ¥1,487 without any premium format support due to its fanbase being firmly in that young adult/adult (think 25-50) age-range that don't get many discount ticket options.

I see, that'd be a great achievement for the movie considering it's one of the few "achievable" records that can still be taken.

It won't get the record in admissions (may even be around 3rd or 4th there), but I'd say it's the slight favorite to claim it in revenue. We'll have to wait and see when the number is released to be certain since it'll be pretty close.

Yeah, I was thinking the 4d/imax price inflation wouldn't quite get there since the admissions gap is pretty big (64k at usual locations), but if you expect the average ticket price to be that high it's possible.

It'd need a little over 1570 or a bit higher than that depending on how the rural locations play out to get there, so if that was its average price for 3.0, it definitely looks doable.

Also, as it could be easily forgotten given how huge its first day is, do remember that Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures had to stop playing it by 8pm (due to restrictions they're following), meaning the film's last showings were at 5pm in and around Tokyo. Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures represent around 3/4ths of the entire market.

Of course, they countered the early closing times a little bit by opening at 7am (couple hours earlier than normal for a Monday), but it would have had a bit more showings if Tokyo and surrounding prefectures were operating under normal hours still (a couple operate 18-21 hours a day).

Update on Hayao Miyazaki's final film "How Do You Live?" which has been in production since 2016 is half finished and that the film will be 125 minutes long. What's the record for the longest Japanese animation in production?

If it's still taking 1 month to animated 1 minute of the film as reported last year (or the year before?), as it seems to still be the case, then I guess we're looking at a ~2026 release year. 2025 at the earliest if they rush it.

Maybe Ghibli will go for the most expensive film trophy instead of box office now. Though it already crowned that position with 5 billion yen Princess Kaguya which was 6 years in production, and this new film is expected to take 10 years!

So Corpse,
Is there still possibility for DS to pass 40 billion Yen?
Today, it suffers from a harsh decline of 60%

Well, most of that drop is because last Monday was a discount day (the first of every month). It's not unusual for most films to drop big (like 50%) the following week after a discount day. That said, the drop is higher than a typical post-discount day, due to losing its 4DX showings (which were its most popular) and thanks to the hype surrounding Evangelion's opening day, so we'll have to see how it performs for the remainder of the week.

¥40 billion is going to be in play until it just isn't, honestly. Evangelion taking the 4DX screens will slow Demon Slayer's path to that milestone down quite a bit, but it's going to be around for quite some time. Spring Break is also in 3 weeks, and then there's Golden Week to close out April and start May, so there are opportunities coming up to boost it as well.

Everything on this list is either a film's Opening Day (Friday) or First Saturday, whichever was the biggest. Some films, younger-skewing films in particular, don't perform too well when they open on a Friday, so Saturday ends up being more of a true first day in terms of potential.

Evangelion 3.0:1.0 is the only film on the list that didn't open on Friday or Saturday. And while you'll sometimes see films open in the middle of the week (Wednesday or Thursday) when a holiday or holiday period is going on, a Monday release day is highly unusual, esoecially given it's a regular Monday. Besides some limited release films, I don't think any major film has ever opened on a Monday before, or not since I've begun tracking the box-office.

Biggest known Monday, yes. Evangelion *probably* beat it in revenue. But it'll be pretty close.

~535,000 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Second Saturday)
~530,000 - Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (First Monday, Opening Day)
~525,000 - Howl's Moving Castle (First Sunday)
~525,000 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Second Sunday)
~515,000 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (First Sunday)
~510,000 - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Second Friday)
~505,000 - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (First Wednesday)
~500,000 - Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (First Sunday)
~500,000 - Rookies (First Saturday, Opening Day)

~ Estimate.

Who would have expected a 500,000+ day in 2021 already? If Evangelion had opened on a Friday or Saturday, like normal films, sure (though still huge), but on a regular Monday that was only scheduled a week ago? #JapanBoxOfficeCrayCray

This is also *probably* the new record for Biggest Monday (revenue), breaking Demon Slayer's Monday record it set on its third Monday in revenue by a tad. And the fourth Biggest Monday (admissions). Pending actuals.

I'm estimating ¥825-850 million ($7.6-7.8 million), but numbers this high can vary a bit, especially given the unusual circumstances. This opening day is also ~70% of its predecessor's full opening weekend. Incredibly impressive.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Evangelion FINALLY Opens; New Mon. Rec
Evangelion is perhaps the most personally meaningful series to me ever, so it's great to see it still having this pull with audiences decades later.

Amazing number for Evangelion and to pull this on a regular Monday is just bonkers even if its OD.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train retakes the #1 spot in its 21st week of release after being knocked off six weeks ago. This is its third consecutive weekend increase as well, giving it the second biggest 21st weekend ever, only behind Your Name. by a small margin. It has now sold 27,879,659 admissions after 143-days in release. ¥40 billion and 30 million admissions are both still in play, though with Evangelion taking its 4DX screens on Monday, it's going to be a slow, slow crawl.

>Loved Like a Flower Bouquet was dethroned after five weeks atop the box office, but it continues to have stellar holds. Its sixth weekend here is only down 19% versus its opening weekend. A truly incredible performance here, and it will become Tokyo Theater, Co.'s highest grossing film ever next week.

>The Sun Does Not Move managed to come in above ¥100 million, so fair enough start. It sold 79,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 355 screens, and sold 107,444 admissions over its first three days in release.

>Raya and the Last Dragon has an estimated weekend gross based on its 3-day total, but it appears to have just made the Top 5! That's obviously a much better ranking than it was possibly looking at going into the weekend, but this opening is still terrible in every regard and only looks "good" now since I lowballed it. Over its first three days in release, it sold 55,395 admissions on 253 screens. As mentioned, Toho Cinemas and Movix Cinemas decided not to show the film, likely from a dispute with Disney over its release.

It's frustrating since Disney is such a reliably strong market for Disney and it should have opened much higher than this. Worst-case should have been a Brave (WDA and Pixar's worst performing film in the market prior to this, or since the 90s) type of opening and performance, but its opening is almost 60% below Brave. I guess it'll be aiming for ¥500 million ($5 million), but March is crowded and it's likely going to suffer from consecutive screen/showtime cuts now given its poor opening and it could gross much less.
