>The Eternal Zero is still showing serious momentum despite no more Holidays, and may have a fourth weekend above ¥400 million ($4 million) and a total exceeding ¥4 billion ($40 million) now.

And its 4th weekend admissions (69,885) at Toho Cinemas are:
-down only 23% compared to its opening weekend admissions (91,000),
-up about 9% over its second weekend admissions (63,000) and,
-down just 20% from its third weekend's (last weekend), New Year boosted, admissions (89,000).

>Trick: The Last Stage wasn't able to keep pace with The Eternal Zero and will settle for second place. The 53,000 admissions here should get it about 250,000 admissions and a debut between ¥300-325 million ($3-3.2 million), though, which is still solid and will get it to ¥1.5-2 billion ($15-20 million).

>The Escape Plan saw a decent bump on Sunday and shouldn't have any problem exceeding 100,000 admissions for the weekend now, likely taking the 3-day total to ¥150-175 million ($1.4-1.7 million). If these numbers hold in the morning, it has an outside shot at reaching ¥1 billion ($9/10 million), though a total of ¥800-900 million ($7/8 million) is more likely.

Everything except for Insidious: Chapter 2, Wake Up, Girls! and Magi Madoka Magica saw Sunday increases.

I'll start posting how many showings each film had when I post Toho's admissions (weekend admissions coming up soon).

Wow, so it wasn't very popular then.

So Escape Plan had 34,911 admissions from Sat-Sun. So you think it can make at least 65,089 from other distributors' cinemas?

24,225 is the weekend admissions (Sat-Sun) at Toho. I didn't post Sun. admissions which were 13,539 (+26.7%) over Sat. Toho Cinemas represents about 20% of the nation's admissions, so 100,000+ looks pretty good for The Escape Plan since it got 24,225 from their locations

Whenever I post Toho Cinemas admissions, if you multiply that number by 4.5-5 you'll end up with a good estimate for the day or weekend. The multiplier fluctuates a bit depending on the distributor or genre of film. Kids/family films usually do under 20% at Toho Cinemas, and Toei releases also do under 20%. Live-action films that skew over 40 (most do now) tend to be slightly above 20%.

The Eternal Zero is estimated to have exceeded 3.4 million admissions to reach a new total of ¥4.22 billion ($40.4 million) after four weeks in release, and retaining its #1 spot for 4-consecutive weeks.

Exceeding ¥4 billion after four weeks isn't too uncommon (The Eternal Zero is the 37th film to do so since 2004), but it's quite an achievement being a non-sequel reaching the milestone so fast (25/37 are remakes or sequels).

Also, the only big blockbuster live-action domestic films are based on TV dramas (Bayside Shakedown, Umizaru, Rookies, etc.), and The Eternal Zero is beginning to catch up to them with it's extraordinary legs (x7.79 multiplier after 4 weeks) despite opening about half as big:

Films Exceeding ¥4 billion after Four Weeks (2004-)

Makes sense. So it's Fri-Sun release pattern didn't affect it much. It's still doing very well. I think the demand may have seriously burned off.

Friday releases don't really matter in the end. Sometimes Friday openers can benefit if a holiday or discount day (1st/15th of each month) falls on the day, but in most cases grosses from Friday only accounts for ~15% of the 3-day total. Hollywood still favors Friday releases, though, and most of their films are released on Friday as opposed to Saturday.

Saturdays, and especially Sundays during most of the year, are much stronger. Wednesdays are also stronger than Fridays are.

No. We usually just track Saturdays and Sundays, Holidays, and some Wednesdays.

The Weekend Ranking is going to be posted soon, and The Eternal Zero is well-above yesterday's estimates and is having an Avatar-esque run.

Weekend Ranking [01/11-12]

01 (01) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 4
02 (--) Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) DEBUT
03 (--) The Escape Plan (Gaga) DEBUT

04 (02) Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Toho) Week 6
05 (03) Gravity (Warner Bros.) Week 5
06 (--) Judge! (Shochiku) DEBUT
07 (05) The Liar and His Lover (Toho) Week 5
08 (04) Planes (Disney) Week 4
09 (06) Hunter X Hunter: The Final Mission (Toho) Week 3
10 (08) Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Gaim & Wizard (Toei) Week 5

>The Eternal Zero claims its 4th-consecutive week on top with little effort. It grossed ¥467,540,050 ($4.5 million) and 363,510 admissions during the weekend, bringing it's four-week total to ¥4.4 billion ($42.5 million) and 3.57 million admissions.

The Eternal Zero Breakdown:
1st Weekend: ¥542 million ($5.3 million)
2nd Weekend: ¥372 million ($3.6 million), -31%, ¥1.61 billion ($15.5 million)
3rd Weekend: ¥532 million ($5.2 million), +43%, ¥3.20 billion ($30.9 million)
4th Weekend: ¥468 million ($4.5 million), -12%, ¥4.40 billion ($42.5 million)

At this rate, it's heading for ¥7/8 billion ($70-80 million)! It'll likely remain atop the Box-Office until February, too, so maybe 7-consecutive weeks on top. :zonks:

>Trick: The Last Stage opened on 314 screens to ¥331,657,900 ($3.2 million) and 246,099 admissions. The opening is slightly below the last film, but it's probably heading for a similar total near ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>The Escape Plan debuted to ¥160,245,600 ($1.5 million) and 133,344 admissions on 300 screens over the weekend frame, exceeding expectations. The film skewed very old, with 40+ year olds representing 95.4% of the weekend attendance. The 3-day total isn't available yet, but I'm assuming it's close to ¥200 million meaning it actually has a good shot at reaching ¥1 billion (9/10 million), which is more than either of The Expendables films.

>Judge! also exceed most expectations and earned ¥93,696,300 ($900,000) and 72,526 admissions on 253 screens. This is a good start to distributor Shochiku's 2014 as it'll have no problem reaching ¥500 million+ ($5/6 million).

03 (--) The Escape Plan (Gaga) DEBUT

The film skewed very old, with 40+ year olds representing 95.4% of the weekend attendance. The 3-day total isn't available yet, but I'm assuming it's close to ¥200 million meaning it actually has a good shot at reaching ¥1 billion (9/10 million), which is more than either of The Expendables films.

Awesome opening. It seems Asia has really warmed to Escape Plan. The 40+ year old audience demo being at 95.4% is crazy!!! I love Japan. It's black or white, no middle ground.

95.4% is the highest I've seen reported for a specific demographic, and it could very well be a record for the age demographic! :funny:

There are usually a couple films a year that garner a 90%+ female weekend audience share (Platinum Data (94%) and The After-Dinner Mysteries (92%) from 2013), but I haven't seen a film pull in a 90%+ in the age demographics before.

The highest I remember from the past year was Don't Lose Heart in November. 78% of it's weekend audience were 40+. There are however many films that land in the 50-60% range with the 40+ demographic in the market now, though. Young people don't really go to the movies.

Escape Plan had ¥206,715,499 for the 3-day. That's the calculation I made from BOM. Is it accurate?

And how about an admissions figure?

Also, any idea how many Toho-Towa screens it was to get that 24,225 adm figure?

Pretty much. The 3-day was ¥206,705,502. BOM has been very accurate the past few months with openers. Some totals can be pretty off, usually the longer they're in release, and they sometimes completely leave off one or more films in the Top 10 (even a film that opens in first!), but it's at least some kid of improvement.

It's Toho Cinemas. Toho-Towa is a distributor.

I don't know the screen count, but it played 290 times last weekend at Toho Cinemas, so it averaged 83.5 people per showing.

Distributor Toho was the #1 distributor in Japan for a 8th-consecutive year (2006-), and this is their 6th-consecutive year above the ¥50 billion mark:

>2010 - ¥74,869,612,938 ($902 million)
#1 Film - Arrietty - ¥9.25 billion ($111 million)
>2012 - ¥74,135,772,802 ($882 million)
#1 Film - Umizaru: Brave Hearts - ¥7.33 billion ($93 million)
>2008 - ¥73,914,598,446 ($725 million)
#1 Film - Ponyo - ¥15.50 billion ($156 million)
>2013 - ¥67,332,892,704 ($686 million)
#1 Film - The Wind Rises - ¥12.00 billion ($123 million)

>2009 - ¥65,493,311,500 ($720 million)
#1 Film - Rookies - ¥8.55 billion ($94 million)
>2011 - ¥59,111,105,930 ($749 million)
#1 Film - From Kokuriko Hill - ¥4.47 billion ($57 million)

Distributor Toho has been dominating the box-office since 2006, averaging a market share of ~34% each year. Full 2013 Results should be released by the Motion Picture Association of Japan near the end of the month.

Thanks for the info. Was there an admissions figure for the 3 day?

No, but it should be between 170-175,000.

How big do you see Frozen in Japan? And do you think the amazing spiderman 2 has chances to be the biggest hollywood film of 2014?

Frozen should do very well. I'm expecting $30-40 million right now. It might also become a contender for highest-grossing Hollywood film this year since their slate is very, very weak.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a candidate for highest-grossing Hollywood film this year given the weak competition, but I believe it's more likely that Transformers: Age of Extinction and/or Resident Evil 6 beats it. Godzilla is also a possible candidate.

If Gravity would win Best Picture at the Oscars, then it would certainly become a major contender. It's already looking at $30-35 million, so a win could potentially push it to $50 million (a number I don't think any other film from Hollywood will reach this year).
