Weekend Estimates [01/25-26]

01 (01) ¥360 million ($3.5 million), -10%, The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 6
02 (02) ¥159 million ($1.5 million), -29%, Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 3
03 (--) ¥114 million ($1.1 million), 0, The Little House (Shochiku) DEBUT
04 (03) ¥80 million ($780,000), -45%, Black Butler (Warner Bros.) Week 2
05 (04) ¥79 million ($770,000), -41%, Zyuten Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! (Toei) Week 2
06 (05) ¥78 million ($760,000), -19%, Gravity (Warner Bros.) Week 7
07 (07) ¥54 million ($520,000), -28%, Judge! (Shochiku) Week 3
08 (08) ¥48 million ($460,000), -31%, Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Toho) Week 8
09 (06) ¥46 million ($440,000), -41%, The Escape Plan (Gaga) Week 3

12 (09) ¥29 million ($270,000), -59%, Ender's Game (Disney) Week 2

>The Eternal Zero once again pulls off an incredible weekend, and estimates have actually been lower than actuals for it, so it may see a sub-10% drop. It should be very, very close to ¥6 billion ($58 million) now if it hasn't exceeded the mark. ¥8 billion ($75-80 million) is looking very likely, and ¥9 billion ($85-90 million) will enter the equation soon at this rate.

>The Little House is a bit disappointing after the solid success of Yamada's last film, Tokyo Family last year. Legs, however, will be excellent and these films always make more than 60% of their gross from the weekdays, too. ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) is a stretch, but doable.

>THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE isn't wide enough to gather an estimate for, but it's surely in the Top 5 at the very least. It will probably come in at #3.

I'll wait and see if The Eternal Zero is above ¥6 billion to post the Films Above ¥6 billion after Six Weeks list.

Hefty drop for Escape Plan. I suppose it's near $6m by now though.

Next weeks competition includes: American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, Thor: The Dark World, and I Want to Hold.

One of them will have to open to at least ¥250 million ($2.4 million) to stop The Eternal Zero from claiming a 7th-consecutive week on top. And that's giving Zero a 30% drop from its estimate sixth-weekend when it's been having drops better than half that since its second weekend, thus I think a 7th-consecutive week on top is highly likely. I wasn't expecting another of these blockbuster runs so soon after The Wind Rises.

Hustle and Wolf open on Friday, so their weekends will be slightly deflated. I don't believe Hustle has any chance of opening at #1 anyway. The theater count hasn't been released, but it's being released by an independent distributor (Phantom Film), so it can be crossed off. Leonardo Dicaprio/Scorsese have a decent track record, but I have doubts it'll outperform their past few films. Shutter Island opened to ¥270 million, however, so there is a tiny chance. Thor I believe is out of contention for the #1 spot since it'll have to more than double what the first film opened with. And finally, Want to Hold could certainly do over ¥200 million, more likely than not at this time I think, but these romantic films rarely go much higher.

>The Eternal Zero remains unstoppable, making it 6-consecutive weeks atop the box-office, and dropping just 6% to earn ¥374,864,900 ($3.7 million) and 286,452 admissions over the weekend. It may remain on top until March. And I can't recall any film having a 6th weekend bigger than their 2nd weekend that wasn't aided by a holiday (not even Avatar or Miyazaki's films).

After 37 days in release, it has grossed ¥5,961,722,950 ($57.6 million) and 4,833,000 admissions. It has become the highest-grossing live-action film in 1.5 years, and it's not even close to being finished and is on track for an all-time record, once in a decade run.

Weekly Breakdown:
1st Weekend: ¥542 million ($5.3 million)
2nd Weekend: ¥372 million ($3.6 million), -31%, ¥1.61 billion ($15.5 million)
3rd Weekend: ¥532 million ($5.2 million), +43%, ¥3.20 billion ($30.9 million)
4th Weekend: ¥468 million ($4.5 million), -12%, ¥4.16 billion ($40.2 million)
5th Weekend: ¥401 million ($3.9 million), -14%, ¥5.17 billion ($49.7 million)
6th Weekend: ¥375 million ($3.7 million), -06%, ¥5.96 billion ($57.6 million)

>THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE debuted at #3 (though #5 in admissions) while only playing on 39 screens. It grossed ¥149,876,900 ($1.45 million) on 81,262 admissions. This gives it an insane avg. ticket price of ¥1,844! ($18.1). I've seen higher avg. ticket prices in USD for 3D films during 2010-2012 (largely thanks to the exchange rate), but I have never seen one so high in Yen before (it's nearly 50% above the average). Just more proof that the Otaku crowd will literally pay any price for their interests.

>The Little House opened to ¥122,811,700 ($1.2 million) and 112,823 admissions on 315 screens. This is less than expected, but solid enough to be considered a success.

16. ¥5.98 billion ($76 million) / 4.6 million - Thermae Romae (2012)*

19. ¥5.20 billion ($45 million) / 4.1 million - Death Note: The Last Name (2006)*

*Based on a TV show, anime and/or manga.

The Eternal Zero exceeded the ¥6 billion mark (¥6.03 billion) on Monday, its 38th day of release, down just 9% from last Monday according to Toho.

It will pass The Ecstasy Hotel today (Tuesday), and Departures over the weekend. It should pass Umizaru: Limit of Love in admissions over the weekend as well.

At the current pace, its projected run would be:
¥6.6/6.7 billion ($64/65 million); 5.4 million [As of Feb. 02nd] - 07th Week
¥7.2/7.3 billion ($70/71 million); 5.9 million [As of Feb. 09th] - 08th Week
¥7.7/7.8 billion ($75/76 million); 6.3 million [As of Feb. 16th] - 09th Week
¥8.1/8.2 billion ($79/80 million); 6.6 million [As of Feb. 23rd] - 10th Week
¥8.4/8.5 billion ($81/82 million); 6.8 million [As of Mar. 02nd] - 11th Week
¥8.6/8.7 billion ($83/84 million); 7.0 million [As of Mar. 09th] - 12th Week
¥8.7/8.8 billion ($84/85 million); 7.1 million [As of Mar. 16th] - 13th Week
Mar. 21st (2013-2014 School Year Ends); Mar. 22nd-Apr. 06th (Spring Break); Apr. 07th (2014-2015 School Year Begins)
Projected Total: ¥8.9-9.1 billion ($86-88 million); 7.2/7.3 million (16.4-16.8 multiplier)

Spring Break should allow it to reach ¥9 billion ($87 million)... but if it is still showing strength going into April, I can definitely see Toho giving it a Golden Week holiday run (Apr. 26th - May 06th) if ¥10 billion is within range. Almost everyone thought a domestic live-action film grossing ¥10 billion again was impossible (especially with the last two Bayside Shakedown films falling so much), especially one not based on a TV drama/manga, so The Eternal Zero's run is incredibly exciting.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2014 Opening Weekends
An interesting thing happened this morning. Eiren (Motion Picture Producers of Association Japan) released all of 2013's box-office stats (which I'll post later), and one film was moved from a 2014 release to a 2013 release, while opposite happened to another:

>The Tale of Princess Kaguya is now being counted as a 2014 release (thanks to excellent late legs).
>SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 2 is a 2013 release now (because of poor late legs).

Late November releases are hard to place early on (grossing too much or too less after December 1st determines their release year), so their rankings on the opening weekend charts has been fixed, as will they be on the top grossing films charts, too.

The Wind Rises is playing in only 6 theaters now and isn't earning enough to be reported, but it will probably remain in theaters until post-Oscars. If it would upset Frozen, then expect a large expansion in time for Spring Break and a climb up the charts. If not, it'll probably be out of release before Summer adding very, very little to its current total.

Weekend Forecast [02/01-02]

Image
[I Want To Hold You, starring Kitagawa Keiko and Nishikido Ryo]

01 (01) ¥295 million ($2.9 million), The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 7
02 (--) ¥270 million ($2.6 million), I Want to Hold You (Toho) NEW
03 (--) ¥250 million ($2.4 million), The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) NEW
04 (--) ¥180 million ($1.7 million), Thor: The Dark World (Disney) NEW
05 (--) ¥160 million ($1.5 million), American Hustle (Phantom Film) NEW

06 (02) ¥105 million ($1.0 million), Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 4
07 (04) ¥90 million ($880,000), The Little House (Shochiku) Week 2
08 (03) ¥75 million ($730,000), THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 2
09 (06) ¥60 million ($580,000), Gravity (Warner Bros.) Week 8
10 (05) ¥55 million ($530,000), Black Butler (Warner Bros.) Week 3

This is a discount weekend (1st of the month), meaning tickets are 40% off at all major cinema chains today (Sat.) and these days continue to grow in popularity with many films having sell outs, some for the entire day and the first showings for today haven't even started yet.

The top spot will probably be held once again by The Eternal Zero, give it its 7th-consecutive week in first place, but it finally has strong competition:

I Want To Hold You (311 tc) and Wolf of Wall Street (254 tc) are both doing very well, but the former was given the larger screens at the majority of locations likely giving it the edge as best opener this weekend. Thor: The Dark World (321 tc) should do better than the first film. American Hustle (119 tc) also looks good this morning, but the low theater count will prevent it from having a chance at the top.

In addition to the openers above, there is Bilocation (98 tc) and Little Friends (100 tc). I don't see any real momentum for them, however, so I doubt they'll make the Top 10.

Rush, opening next week, also has a number of previews this weekend and is doing really, really well. There may be some potential for it to become a success. Ron Howard's film have done very well in the past, too.

So much for "strong competition" for The Eternal Zero. I don't have time to compile Saturday estimates, but it's up nearly 70% over last Saturday in admissions thanks to the discount day. And even with a big drop on Sunday, typical when the 1st falls on a Saturday, it's looking at a possible increase over last weekend in admissions, and remaining flat or even increasing in gross, too. It's going to stay at #1 for a few more weeks. So 8..9-consecutive weeks on top at least.

The openers look alright, though it seems I overpredicted Wolf. R rated films rarely attract a wide audience, so I should have factored that in even with Scorsese/Dicaprio and award buzz. Thor looks to finish above it based on Saturday figures.

David, All Is Lost is actually doing pretty decent numbers for arthouse fare in Germany. It is off-topic here, but still...

I mean it's nothing to write home about, but in thre weeks it has already more admissions than The World's End, The Last Stand, Olympus Has Fallen or Kick-Ass 2. It will outdo Ender's Game, Jack the Giant Slayer, Zero Dark Thirty, The Inernship, About Time and Escape Plan in the long run.

I am going to post the upcoming release schedule for February and March tonight, but All is Lost is being released on March 14th by Pony Canyon.

They're a small independent distributor, but they're alright. Most films eventually get a theatrical release in Japan, even if it's a year (or more) later. A ton of international titles, the majority being French and Italian films, get released, too. Over 1,100 films were released in 2013. The only films that have a hard time finding a distributor are Horror and Comedy films (basically no market for these), and more recently smaller animated films (like Blue Sky or Sony Animation releases).
