Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking; Charts Updating
The MPAJ (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) released the 2014 Yearly Results earlier today, so I'll be posting everything from the report soon.

2014 ended up being the 3rd biggest year ever (in gross), and the most-attended year since 2010.

I'll post more later.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 2014 Yearly Result (3rd Biggest Year E
Indeed. Its performance helped elevate 2014 to be one of the biggest years in a long time, but the fact that it represented almost 30% of the Imported Films earnings over the year is troubling.

Imported Films (mostly Hollywood) have been really struggling in Japan (since 2006), with 2012 and 2013 being their worst years ever at the modern day box-office. Even with Frozen, Imported Films still had their 4th weakest year since 2000 (ahead of 2011, 2012, 2013).

Here are some comparison lists to see how 2014 stacked up against every year since 2000 (with the top overall year below each list):

I want to see Parasyte. I hope it'll get a DVD/VOD release in the US.

It should... eventually, although it'll probably be sometime in mid/late 2016. Part 2 is being released on April 25th in Japan, so that'll probably delay the international release (outside of Asia, and probably France*) a bit, too.

The US is usually the last market to see the release of any Japanese films, but you'd be surprised how many actually get limited releases in the US.

*France seems to really enjoy Japanese cinema. French films do, perhaps surprisingly, well in Japan and vice-versa.

Weekend Forecast (01/31-02/01)

01 (01) ¥291 million ($2.5 million), -15%, ¥7.51 billion ($64.2 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 7
02 (--) ¥210 million ($1.8 million), 0, ¥210 million ($1.8 million), Joker Game (Toho) NEW
03 (--) ¥170 million ($1.4 million), 0, ¥210 million ($1.8 million), Exodus: Gods and Kings (Fox) NEW
04 (03) ¥142 million ($1.2 million), -22%, ¥7.26 billion ($62.1 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 7
05 (02) ¥138 million ($1.2 million), -36%, ¥570 million ($4.9 million), Annie (Sony) Week 2
06 (--) ¥125 million ($1.1 million), 0, ¥125 million ($1.1 million), Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) NEW
07 (04) ¥52 million ($445,000), -35%, ¥860 million ($7.4 million), ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 4
08 (05) ¥40 million ($350,000), -29%, ¥650 million ($5.6 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 4
09 (--) ¥35 million ($300,000), 0, ¥35 million ($300,000), Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Ars Nova DC (Showgate) NEW
10 (--) ¥30 million ($260,000), 0, ¥30 million ($260,000), Midnight Restaurant (Toei) NEW

>Big Hero 6 will win its 5th-consecutive weekend, and likely hit ¥7.5 billion ($64 million) on Sunday.

>Joker Game and Exodus: Gods and Kings will be competing for 2nd place, but it should go to Joker Game. Exodus had a pretty low Friday take, and its ticket sales so far today aren't suggesting it'll reach ¥200 million. Hopefully both films can manage a debut above the mark, though.

>Maestro! isn't looking too good and might even miss the Top 5... which would be quite disappointing. Maybe it'll turn out to be more of an afternoon/evening film.

>Arpeggio of Blue Steel is only playing on 31 screens, but these anime films generally have a fanbase strong enough to push them in the Top 10 anyway.

>And finally, Midnight Restaurant may not debut in the Top 10, but it should only require about ¥30 million to do it... If it doesn't, then Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie will enjoy a third week in the Top 10.

However, with Sunday being the 1st (40% of tickets nationwide), a lot could still happen over the weekend. I'm thinking Maestro! in particular will outpace its Saturday by a wide margin and potentially come in higher.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (01/31-02/01)
Some important news regarding all future Usual Location Admission and Weekend Estimates postings:

The Usual Locations use to consist of Toho Cinemas (2nd biggest chain), Movix Cinemas (4th biggest chain), 109 Cinemas (5th biggest chain), and Kinezo Cinemas (6th biggest chain), which together represented about ~35% of the market.

However, now United Cinemas (3rd largest chain) has been recently added, so the Usual Location Admissions I'll be posting will represent nearly 45% of the market. Almost 50% of the nation's cinemas are now accounted for, which will make Weekend Estimates and other postings even more accurate from this point forward.

(Cinema chain rank determined by number of theaters).

Usual Locations - Saturday Admissions (~45% of the market)
Admissions (% change vs. LW), Film (Dis.) Week

29,937 (-29%), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 7
28,231 (NEW), Joker Game (Toho) NEW
23,633 (NEW), Exodus: Gods and Kings (Fox) NEW

21,321 (-42%), Annie (Sony) Week 2
16,060 (NEW), Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) NEW
13,393 (-24%), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 4
12,576 (-39%), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 7
9,633 (NEW), Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Ars Nova DC (Showgate) NEW
9,155 (NEW), μ's GO→GO! LoveLive! 2015 ~Dream Sensation!~ (T-Joy) NEW

6,661 (-43%), ST: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 4
5,534 (NEW), Midnight Restaurant (Toei) NEW

Note: Today (Sunday) will be much stronger than last week and yesterday, with it being the 1st of the month (40% ticket discounts), so expect better weekend holds.

>Joker Game looks more likely now to beat Exodus for the #2 spot this weekend, unless Sunday is closer and the latter's 3D share is high enough. Exodus's 3D share was only 23% at the Usual Locations on Saturday, though, so it'll need to make the race close in admissions.

>Maestro! improved as the day progressed, but could potentially still miss debuting in the Top 5 since Yo-Kai Watch plays very well on Sundays and at Aeon Cinemas (biggest cinema chain).

>The μ's GO→GO! animated concert tour is only playing this weekend in 9 theaters, but if its ticket sales today match those of Saturday's... it might reach the Top 10.

As expected, Sunday was massive across the board. Quite a few films increased over 100% on Sunday, family/kid films in particular, with it being the 1st of the month (40% discount on ticket prices).

However, increases/decreases won't be the same for weekend grosses. Discount days greatly decrease the avg. ticket prices, and gross increases/decreases are generally 10-15% lower than the admission % changes when the 1st falls on a weekend.

Quick note: μ's GO→GO! LoveLive! 2015 sold through 83% of its available tickets this weekend. I think this is the best performance ever by an animated concert film.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates shortly.

>Big Hero 6 enjoys a very strong 5th-consecutive week atop the box-office. It's looking good for ¥8.5 billion ($72/73 million), but maybe it can inch closer to ¥9 billion ($76/77 million).

>Joker Game looks like it missed ¥200 million by a small margin, but maybe it'll come in just above the mark like ST did a four weeks ago. Overall, an alright debut, but films that open on a discount weekend tend to be frontloaded. ¥1 billion would be tough to reach if the estimate doesn't go up.

>Exodus: Gods and Kings doesn't come close to matching Noah's debut last year, being off about 40% according to estimates. It's probably headed for ¥800/900 million ($7/8 million).

>Maestro! has a mediocre debut, but legs should be decent even with it opening on a discount weekend. If the estimate holds up, maybe it'll reach ¥700 million ($6 million) or so.

>The estimates for the other openers are very rough since they're limited, especially Arpeggio of Blue Steel and μ's GO→GO!. The former should be in the Top 10, but the latter is harder to gauge.

Weekend Ranking (01/31-02/01)

Image

01 (01) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 7
02 (--) Joker Game (Toho) DEBUT
03 (--) Exodus: Gods and Kings (Fox) DEBUT

04 (02) Annie (Sony) Week 2
05 (03) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 7
06 (--) Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) DEBUT
07 (04) ST: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 4
08 (05) Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 4
09 (--) Midnight Restaurant (Toei) DEBUT
10 (06) Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Toei) Week 3

>Big Hero 6 repeats atop the box-office for a 5th-consecutive weekend, down only 12.1% from last weekend (but up 1.5% in admissions due to the 1st of the month ticket discounts).

It grossed ¥306,713,700 ($2.6 million) with 264,721 admissions in its 7th weekend in release, and has now earned an incredible ¥7,565,771,600 ($64.5 million) with 5,950,599 admissions after 7 weeks.

>Joker Game opened in 2nd place, delivering the best debut over the weekend, by taking in ¥207,131,700 ($1.8 million) with 174,121 admissions on 310 screens. It's nice it came in above estimates and exceeded the 200 million mark, but reaching ¥1 billion will still likely be a challenge considering it opened over a discount weekend. Let's hope for the best so that 2015 can have another early ¥1 billion earner.

>Exodus: Gods and Kings debuted in 3rd place (however, it ranked 4th in admissions), grossing ¥185,655,400 ($1.6 million) with 141,890 admissions across 678 screens. When you consider the big screen count and opening over a discount weekend, this is a pretty poor opening. However, it could have been worse and the opening is high enough to make it a ¥1 billion contender (though it's likely to fall short).

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! falls to 5th place in its 7th week in release, but it hit a very important milestone over the weekend. The first film in the Yo-Kai Watch series is now the most-attended TV series animated film ever with 6.56 million admissions, overtaking the first Pokemon movie, Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back's 6.54 million admissions from 1998.

It still trails the first Pokemon movie in gross, having now grossed ¥7.26 billion ($62.1 million) after 7 weeks in release (vs. Pokemon's ¥7.54 billion total), but it still has a month to get there before Doraemon takes it screens and audience away on March 7th.

>Maestro! unfortunately missed debuting in the Top 5, earning ¥118,536,400 ($1.0 million) with 102,828 admissions on 261 screens over the weekend. This is an alright opening, but it's only going to earn ¥600 million ($5 million) or so.

>Midnight Restaurant manages to make the Top 10 in its limited release, grossing ¥43,604,300 ($375,000) with 36,302 admissions on 80 screens. This isn't exactly an accomplishment to celebrate for Toei, but the fact it opened nearly as high as most of their recent live-action films that played in 2/3x as many locations is a success.

>And finally, Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Ars Nova DC surprisingly missed the Top 10, placing 11th in its debut.
