Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 38th Japan Academy Prize Nominations
More yearly data is being slowly released ahead of the MPAJ's Yearly Report later this month.

Below is the number of foreign films by country that received a theatrical release in Japan in 2014:

175 - United States
63 - South Korea
40 - United Kingdom
22 - France
10 - India
8 - Germany
6 - China
5 - Spain
5 - Russia

2013 saw the highest number of foreign films released (526) this century in cinemas, so 2014 looks to have fallen more into the normal 350/400 range over the past 15 years. A lot of foreign animated films (everything not Disney) and comedies are struggling to find distributors.

Assuming Japan released over 500 films again this year (they're been releasing 400/500+ films each year since 2006, the most films being published since the height of the Japan Box-Office in the mid 1950's to early 1960's), 2014 should have somewhere around 850/900 films released in theaters.

Most Films Released by Year:
1,117 - 2013
983 - 2012
850/900 - 2014 (projection)
821 - 2006
810 - 2007
806 - 2008
799 - 2011
791 - 1956
777 - 1989
764 - 1961
763 - 1960
762 - 2009
751 - 1965
750 - 1988
747 - 1969
743 - 1968
731 - 2005
716 - 2010
704 - 1990
703 - 1959
700+

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 38th Japan Academy Prize Nominations
I've been pretty busy this week (first week tutoring :D) , so I didn't have a chance to post a Weekend Forecast. Thankfully, it's just going to be a typical slow January weekend.

>Big Hero 6 will win its third-consecutive weekend and is looking at another potential sub-20% drop, for a fifth weekend just above ¥400 million ($3.5 million). Its total should be around ¥6.4 billion ($55 million) after Sunday.

>Yo-Kai Watch will remain in second place for the weekend with a fifth weekend around ¥200 million ($1.7/1.8 million). It's doing very, very little over the weekdays now with all schools in sessions, so it won't be adding much week-to-week from this point. After Sunday, its total should be around ¥6.8 billion ($58 million). Big Hero 6 might catch it next weekend.

As for the openers...

>The top debut is going to be the latest ranger movie, Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie. It was a bit underwhelming yesterday, so it probably won't match last year's film. It might debut just above the ¥100 million (might hit $1 million) mark.

>Again (Koshien film) will be Toei's latest live-action disappointment, and looks to debut around ¥50 million ($400-450,000). I'm a little surprised it's doing this poorly, as baseball films generally do pretty well.

>And finally, Phantom Film's Bali Big Brother is only playing on 67 screens, though its opening could challenge Again's based on Saturday. The much lower screen count, 67 vs 204, should keep it in the ¥35/40 million ($300-350,000) range though.

Weekend Estimates (01/17-18)

01 (01) ¥371 million ($3.2 million), -28%, ¥6.35 billion ($54.2 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 5
02 (02) ¥187 million ($1.6 million), -46%, ¥6.80 billion ($57.9 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 5
03 (03) ¥115 million ($1.0 million), -42%, ¥520 million ($4.4 million), ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 2
04 (--) ¥94 million ($810,000), 0, ¥94 million ($810,000), Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Teoi) NEW
05 (04) ¥81 million ($700,000), -38%, ¥390 million ($3.4 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 2
06 (05) ¥51 million ($440,000), -58%, ¥260 million ($2.2 million), Taken 3 (Fox) Week 2
07 (--) ¥49 million ($425,000), 0, ¥49 million ($425,000), Again (Toei) NEW
08 (07) ¥43 million ($375,000), -26%, ¥1.66 billion ($14.2 million), Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 6
09 (06) ¥33 million ($285,000), -44%, ¥1.05 billion ($8.9 million), The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 5
10 (08) ¥23 million ($195,000), -54%, ¥1.46 billion ($12.5 million), The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Warner Bros.) Week 6
11 (10) ¥14 million ($110,000), -54%, ¥1.91 billion ($16.3 million), Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 8

>Big Hero 6 continues its very impressive run, with a third week atop the box-office. It might not overtake Yo-Kai Watch next weekend, but should surpass it by the end of the month. It looks on track for around ¥8.5 billion (~$75 million).

>Yo-Kai Watch is beginning to slow down considerably now and will probably miss ¥8 billion and top out around ¥7.5 billion (~$65 million). This total would put it very close to 7 million admissions.

>Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie didn't do very well, and probably missed the ¥100 million mark. Just like the Kamen Rider franchise, this series of films also seems to be on a downward trend at the box-office.

No estimate can accurately be gathered for Bali Big Brother, but it likely made the bottom of the Top 10.

Top 5 Distributors of 2014

Rank - Revenue, % change, Distributor [Current Market Share]
1. ¥72,965,406,502, +8.4%, Toho [45.9%] *9th consecutive win*
2. ¥39,595,150,000, +97.9%, Walt Disney [24.9%]
3. ¥20,688,789,640, +84.9%, Warner Bros. [13.0%]
4. ¥13,876,395,200, +41.6%, Shochiku [8.7%]
5. ¥11,611,224,340, -31.0%, Toei [7.3%]

2014 Top 5 Distributors vs 2013's Top 5 Distributors
¥158,736,965,682, +15.6%, Top 5

#1 Films for each distributor:
>The Eternal Zero accounted for 12% of Toho's 2014 total.
>Frozen accounted for 64% of Disney's 2014 total.
>Rurouni Kenshin 2-part sequel accounted for 46% of Warner Bros.'s 2014 total.
>Hot Road accounted for 18% of Shochiku's 2014 total.
>Partners 3 accounted for 18% of Toei's 2014 total.

The remaining top distributors of 2014 (the top 13 is usually reported) should be revealed this week, but the Top 5 were so strong, that 2014 is definitely up over last year and could end up as the 2nd/3rd biggest year ever (behind 2010 and possibly 2004).

Although, 2013's Top 5 distributors accounted for 71% of the yearly box-office, so if 2014 follow suit, it would actually beat 2010 and become the biggest year ever. Admissions might actually be likely since 2010 was the year of the major 3D boom, which has since nearly died in Japan. We'll see.

Nah. Reviews were good in Japan and it's Clint Eastwood. His films have earned numerous wins/nominations over the years (he was particularly dominate in the mid/late 2000's). He'd have to make a truly awful film for it not to earn at least a nomination.

I don't expect Jersey Boys to win, though. The category is hard to predict this year however, so it's not impossible. My guess would be Frozen by default... but I don't know. Interstellar and Fury were well received and have familiar names, so maybe one of them. Godzilla is the most bizarre nomination. Reviews were fine, much better than the 1998 release, but it looks to me to have solely earned a nomination on its name alone.

Weekend Ranking (01/17-18)

Image

01 (01) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 5
02 (02) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 5
03 (03) ST: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 2
04 (--) Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Toei) DEBUT
05 (04) Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 2
06 (05) Taken 3 (Fox) Week 2
07 (--) Again (Toei) DEBUT
08 (07) Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 6
09 (06) The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 5
10 (--) Bali Big Brother (Phantom Film) DEBUT

>Big Hero 6 wins its third-consecutive weekend, bringing its five-week total to ¥6.41 billion ($54.7 million) with 5.04 million admissions.

The film continues its good pace, and should be able to reach ¥8 billion ($70 million) with nearly 6.5 million admissions. Before Frozen's insane performance, no Disney Animated film could even gross ¥5 billion, so this is a huge success for Big Hero 6 and Disney.

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! keeps its #2 position, and is relying almost soley on its weekend business now, which is thankfully still pretty decent. After five-weeks, it has earned ¥6.83 billion ($58.4 million) with 6.18 million admissions.

Its poor weekday numbers will hinder the rest of its run, but it should still be able to hit ¥7.5 billion ($65 million) and almost 7 million admissions. ¥7.54 billion is the number it needs to beat in order to outgross every Pokemon film, and that still looks doable.

>Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie underwhelmed with ¥86,478,200 ($745,000) with 84,545 admissions over the weekend on 301 screens. That is down a significant 35% compared to last year's film, but I have a feeling the Go Busters featured in last year's film was a bigger draw than those featured in this year's release. I'm not too familiar with the series, though, so I could be wrong.

>Again is off to a very slow start, taking in just ¥51,219,300 ($440,000) with 40,480 admissions on 207 screens. Toei's continued struggle to release a successful live-action film isn't ending this week.

>The Vancouver Asahi exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone, bringing its total to ¥1.08 billion ($9.2 million) with 870,000 admissions after five-weeks. It probably won't do so before tracking ends, but it should reach 1 million admissions.

>Bali Big Brother rounds out the Top 10, grossing ¥45,070,100 ($385,000) with 33,032 admissions on just 67 screens. Phantom Films rarely have a release make the Top 10, so congrats to them.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (01/17-18)
Top 10 Distributors of 2014 [Market Share]

Rank - Revenue, % change, Distributor [Market Share]
01. ¥72,965,406,502, +8.4%, Toho [40.5%] *9th consecutive-win*
02. ¥39,595,150,000, +97.9%, Walt Disney [22.0%]
03. ¥20,688,789,640, +34.9%, Warner Bros. [11.5%]
04. ¥13,876,395,200, +41.6%, Shochiku [7.7%]
05. ¥11,611,224,340, -31.0%, Toei [6.4%]
06. ¥6,314,060,300, +50.3%, Paramount [3.5%]
07. ¥5,005,960,000, -38.1%, Fox [2.8%]
08. ¥4,222,809,700, -15.6%, Sony [2.3%]
09. ¥3,367,471,285, -81.1%, Toho-Towa [1.9%]
10. ¥2,555,951,350, -19.7%, Kadokawa [1.4%]
Top 10 Total: ¥180,203,218,317, +6.0% vs. 2013's Top 10 Distributors

2013's Top 10 Distributors accounted for 88.1% of the yearly box-office, while 2012's Top 10 Distributors accounted for 84.9% of the yearly box-office. 2014's Top 10 Distributors will probably be very close to 90%.

My projection for 2014's yearly box-office is ¥204 billion, +5.0% over last year, with 161-163 million admissions.

I'd predict a little higher, but the Top 10 distributors is very top heavy this year, as independent distributors continue their struggle in the market and add very little to the box-office.

That'd make 2014 the 4th biggest year ever in gross, and the 4th-6th biggest year in admissions (since 2000). Admissions from the 1950s and 1960s blow those out of the water today (admissions were up to 6x greater), so comparisons to those golden years isn't really fair.

2014 Book Market Results
# of Books Sold, % change / Revenue, % change, Book Type

500,482,000, +1.3% / ¥281.51 billion ($2.68 billion), +4.0%, Manga Volumes
497,617,000, -4.9% / ¥624.31 billion ($5.94 billion), -2.5%, Traditional Books/Novels
79,658,000, -7.1% / ¥122.31 billion ($1.16 billion), -4.0%, Trade Paperback (Bunko)
_________________________________________________________________
1,077,757,000, -2.7% / ¥1.028 trillion ($9.78 billion), -0.9%, Overall Book Market

The Overall 2014 Book Market was slightly down compared to 2013, but the Japanese still really, really like to read. It's like 5/6x the size of the box-office. Over 1 billion books sold is pretty staggering.

04 (03) ¥73 million ($620,000), -36%, ¥710 million ($6.1 million), ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 3
05 (05) ¥57 million ($485,000), -30%, ¥540 million ($4.6 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 3
06 (04) ¥45 million ($385,000), -48%, ¥200 million ($1.7 million), Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Toei) Week 2
07 (07) ¥32 million ($275,000), -37%, ¥125 million ($1.1 million), Again (Toei) Week 2
08 (--) ¥30 million ($260,000), 0, ¥40 million ($340,000), Big Eyes (Gaga) NEW
09 (09) ¥30 million ($255,000), -33%, ¥135 million ($1.2 million), Bali Big Brother (Phantom Film) Week 2
10 (06) ¥29 million ($250,000), -45%, ¥330 million ($2.8 million), Taken 3 (Fox) Week 3
--¥25/30 million ($215-250,000), 0, ¥25/30 million ($215-250,000), Kano (Showgate) NEW

This is a really annoying weekend to predict. All the openers, except for Annie, are limited releases playing on fewer than 100 screens. The widest among them is Kano (third baseball film in 4 weeks) on only 62 screens, followed by Big Eyes on 60 screens. Everything else, and there's a lot more, is on 20/30 screens.

There are also various concert/band films or live-broadcasts going on that could also sneak into the bottom of the top 10. I think just the AKB48 live song request broadcast has a chance at making it though. It has very, very few showings on just 18 screens, but most seats are being filled. Ticket prices are likely absurdly high, too.

The only interesting things going on this weekend is really Yo-Kai Watch likely exceeding ¥7 billion, and Big Hero 6 possibly doing it, too. Psycho-Pass has also been holding nicely. It's only playing on 103 screens, and continues to do very well.

01 (01) ¥357 million ($3.0 million), -16%, ¥6.98 billion ($59.6 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 6
02 (--) ¥200 million ($1.7 million), 0, ¥200 million ($1.7 million), Annie (Sony) NEW
03 (02) ¥184 million ($1.6 million), -15%, ¥7.09 billion ($60.5 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 6
04 (03) ¥79 million ($685,000), -31%, ¥720 million ($6.2 million), ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 3
05 (05) ¥59 million ($510,000), -27%, ¥550 million ($4.6 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 3
06 (04) ¥49 million ($420,000), -44%, ¥210 million ($1.8 million), Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Toei) Week 2
07 (07) ¥40 million ($345,000), -21%, ¥135 million ($1.2 million), Again (Toei) Week 2
09 (09) ¥35 million ($300,000), -23%, ¥140 million ($1.2 million), Bali Big Brother (Phantom Film) Week 2
10 (06) ¥31 million ($270,000), -40%, ¥330 million ($2.8 million), Taken 3 (Fox) Week 3
-- ¥27 million ($235,000), -34%, ¥1.72 billion ($14.8 million), Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 7
-- ¥14 million ($120,000), -60%, ¥1.13 billion ($9.6 million), The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 6

These are some very nice holds this weekend, making up for some of last weekend's slightly bigger drops.

>Annie's performance would be a little surprising to me, but musicals almost always do very well in Japan. Japanese moviegoers generally enjoy musicals, with nearly all of them doing good to breakout numbers. Annie is one of the lowest opening musicals, but a debut around ¥200 million should get it to ¥1.1/1.2 million (about $10 million).

None of the limited openers were wide enough to get an accurate estimate for, but I don't think any of them made the Top 10. Big Eyes looks like it may have grossed ¥20 million, and Kano maybe ¥15 million.

However, the AKB48 Request Hour Live-Broadcast looks like it might have the admissions to crack the Top 10 if its ticket prices were high enough. I'm not betting on it doing more than ~¥30 million needed to have done so, though.

Wow, people gave a shit about Annie in Japan. I'm surprised because, you know, they don't have the guilt that US audiences have where they feel obligated to support black trash because of slavery.

Just about any musical can be a hit in Japan. It's a very consistent genre.

Annie actually came in a little higher than estimates, too. :P

Weekend Ranking will be posted shortly.

Weekend Ranking (01/24-25)

01 (01) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 6
02 (--) Annie (Sony) DEBUT
03 (02) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 6
04 (03) ST: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 3
05 (04) Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 3
06 (05) Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Toei) Week 2
07 (08) Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 7
08 (07) Again (Toei) Week 2
09 (06) Taken 3 (Fox) Week 3
10 (09) Bali Big Brother (Phantom Film) Week 2

>Big Hero 6 wins its 4th-consecutive week atop the box-office, earning ¥349,401,400 ($3.0 million) with 260,795 admissions over the weekend (down 18%). After 6-weeks in release, it has earned an incredible ¥7,030,351,100 ($59.9 million) with 5,511,460 admissions. It will overtake Yo-Kai Watch in gross by Wednesday.

>Annie had a successful debut, taking in a solid ¥218,572,300 ($1.9 million) with 164,186 admissions on 505 screens. This gives Sony a good start to 2015, as Annie should earn around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! falls to the #3 spot in its 6th-weekend in release. After 6-weeks in release, it maintains its lead over Big Hero 6, with ¥7.07 billion ($60.3 million) with 6.38 million admissions, but won't stay ahead for much longer. It is still likely to win this close race in admissions, however.

None of the weekend's other openers (all limited) made the Top 10.
