Wow Demon Slayer's OW is just insane (understatement). I didn't really think anything would interest me this year (Box office wise) ever since covid 19's outbreak.

Also I'm not sure how legit this tweet is:
https://twitter.com/Franspeech/status/1 ... 0655692801

but they have DS's gross (3 days) at $50.2m which converts to 5.2 or 5.3 billion yen matching the higher range of your estimate, Corpse.

I honestly think a lot of people use my thread and numbers as an uncredited source for their sites or social media posts (which is fine), because this thread gets A LOT of views with just 30 or something members now (around 50,000 since Friday). It's probably someone who frequents here (HELLO!), which is nice.

This thread is also the third result when searching "Japan box office" on Google now, after box office mojo (...) and wikipedia.

Crunchyroll posted an article talking about the movie yesterday, and some of the wording seemed almost pulled from here (especially regarding Aeon Cinemas, which is oddly specific for a news article). Their linked sources didn't match up with the topic at all. Again, I don't mind. I'm not doing this to get payed (would be nice, of course LOL), it's a hobby I still enjoy that helped me learn Japanese.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterates Pre-Sale Reco
I've never put together a biggest 3-day opening weekend chart since Japan is a 2-day, Sat.-Sun., opening weekend market, and until just the past couple of years, Japanese films opened on Saturdays. And Hollywood films would also open on Saturdays sometimes, especially before 2006/2007 when it was common.

So putting together this chart would most just comprise of Hollywood films released between 2006-present, with a few Japanese films thrown in after they began opening on Fridays in 2017/2018.

However, here is Demon Slayer's estimated 3-day opening weekend compared to the top 3 biggest 3-day opening weekends before today:

Biggest 3-Day Opening Weekends:
¥4,550,000,000-5,200,000,000 ($43-50 million) / 3,570,000-3,835,000 - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) *Estimate*
¥2,279,300,000 ($18.7 million) / 1.62/1.63 million (unofficial admissions) - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
¥1,939,746,600 ($17.8 million) / 1,452,530 admissions - Frozen II (2019)
¥1,938,977,200 ($15.9 million) / 1,486,413 admissions - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

Would this be a chart people would like expanded upon in the future?

Again, it's largely going to comprise of Hollywood films released after 2005/2006, and most of the entries after those above will be the Star Wars prequels/sequels, the other Harry Potters (besides the first three films, they were Saturday openers), and the other Pirates of the Caribbean sequels (except Dead Man's Chest, it was a Saturday opener). And recently, since Japanese films began opening on Fridays, they'll be a few of them too (I think the last two or three Detective Conan films, and Weathering With You). But I wouldn't mind working on it for future updates.

Looking at the charts still feels a little weird lol. I mean, the gap is just so...big. I thought I wouldn't be surprised anymore with this franchise after seeing the manga explode, but...

It might actually do more in 3 days than any other movie has done in 9 (or 10).

You were sayin'? ;)

3-Day Total: ¥4,550,000,000-5,200,000,000 ($43-50 million) / 3,570,000-3,835,000 *Estimate*

That's the estimated 3-day total for Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, which has been posted a couple times now. And below is the list of Biggest Two-Week Totals, either 9 or 10-day totals (but 12-day for Jurassic World) depending on if the film opened on a Friday or Saturday. Demon Slayer's 3-day total will almost certainly come in higher than all but the top 4, but has a good chance of beating the the two-week totals for everything ever in just its first three days.

And it's hard to say, but when it's added to this list next week, it might be at like ¥8/9 billion? Or about double everything near the top. That's not a prediction, not going to do that yet, but a total like that after 10-days seems doable right now.

Biggest Two-Week (9/10-Day) Totals :

¥4.75 billion ($44.5 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
¥4.68 billion ($39.7 million) - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
¥4.66 billion ($36.9 million) - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
¥4.56 billion ($37.7 million) - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
¥4.39 billion ($36.2 million) - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
¥4.36 billion ($35.0 million) - Jurassic World (2015) *12-day, Wed. opener*
¥4.31 billion ($39.4 million) - Frozen II (2019)
¥4.24 billion ($34.6 million) - Spirited Away (2001)
¥4.19 billion ($38.5 million) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
¥4.07 billion ($36.1 million) - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
¥3.99 billion ($36.8 million) - Weathering With You (2019)
¥3.99 billion ($36.9 million) - Toy Story 4 (2019)

¥3.84 billion ($31.8 million) - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
¥3.75 billion ($32.4 million) - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
¥3.65 billion ($32.7 million) - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
¥3.62 billion ($30.1 million) - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
¥3.61 billion ($44.4 million) - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
¥3.60 billion ($31.7 million) - The Da Vinci Code (2006)
¥3.59 billion ($32.3 million) - Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire (2019)
¥3.58 billion ($33.0 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥3.56 billion ($31.6 million) - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
¥3.54 billion ($37.7 million) - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
¥3.43 billion ($30.8 million) - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)

¥3.18 billion ($26.9 million) - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)

I need to add admissions to this list in the future.

03. ¥3.485 billion - 08/04-05/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
04. ¥3.427 billion - 05/03-04/2014 (#1 Film - Frozen)
05. ¥3.423 billion - 07/19-20/2003 (#1 Film - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!)

08. ¥3.329 billion - 07/21-22/2007 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
09. ¥3.314 billion - 07/22-23/2006 (#1 Film - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest)
10. ¥3.297 billion - 08/15-16/2015 (#1 Film - Jurassic World)
11. ¥3.212 billion - 07/28-29/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
12. ¥3.160 billion - 04/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Alice in Wonderland)

14. ¥3.133 billion - 08/16-17/2003 (#1 Film - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!)
15. ¥3.106 billion - 12/19-20/2015 (#1 Film - Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
16. ¥3.100 billion - 07/13-14/2019 (#1 Film - Toy Story 4)
17. ¥3.048 billion - 07/21-22/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
18. ¥3.046 billion - 12/20-21/2014 (#1 Film - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!)
19. ¥3.026 billion - 08/04-05/2018 (#1 Film - Code Blue)

I put together some rough estimates for the other 9 films in the Top 10 this weekend, and they total around ¥550 million. Demon Slayer likely grossed between ¥3.4-3.9 billion (maybe enough to make this weekend #1 on its own), so it accounted for ~86/87% of the top 10's gross based on my estimates.

It used to be that Monday was stronger than Friday I believe, but I guess that has changed in recent years with the release day for most movies switching from Saturday to Friday.

Yes. Monday > Wednesday (can be situational though) > Friday (excluding openers) > Tuesday/Thursday.

Monday is looking very strong, by the way. There continues to be a high number of locations that have already sold 50% or more of their available seating for the day before it begins. I'm not going to track it today or over the other weekdays like I did this past weekend, but will provide some updates throughout the day (and each other weekday) and give an estimate when the day concludes. What I think is going to happen might happen today, but I'll wait to announce it.

Also look for Wednesdays to be particularly strong for Demon Slayer (possibly stronger than Mondays). Wednesday is Ladies' Day in the market, where females get 50% off their tickets, and this film has strong female-support. It's going to excel on Wednesdays.

And remember: Toho Cinemas is operating at 50% capacity on the weekdays, while at 100% capacity on the weekends. Toho Cinemas is the busiest chain, and second largest, and account for ~26% of theaters in the country. This will impact the weekdays. However, Demon Slayer is playing on so many screens with so many showtimes, this may not matter too much for this particular movie like it would for a normal film. We'll just have to get some weekday results to see.

Definitely going to be very interesting looking at its legs after such a ridicolous opening.

Would this be a chart people would like expanded upon in the future?

Definitively warranted as more and more Japanese movies open on Fridays as well...

BTW, do you have by any chance YO-KAI-WATCH's Monday numbers to compare those 3 days to DS:MT? (I know it's Sat-Mon compared to Fri-Sun, but it's still 3 days compared to 3 days ;) )

I'll start working on it then, and have it posted later this week. I'll begin with a 3-day opening cut-off gross of ¥1.5 billion and see how many films that allows. I'm expecting maybe 20 or so from that? We'll see. A list of 20/25 is the target. I'm also expecting that admissions for some older films (mid-2000s) over the 3-day may not be available. For those, I'll take the average ticket price they achieved over the opening weekend frame to get an estimate and mark them.

Definitely not going as low as ¥1 billion since that's the cut-off on the biggest 2-day opening weekend chart and has 50 films on it now. Oh, by the way, Demon Slayer became the 50th film to record an opening weekend above ¥1 billion this weekend.

And yes regarding Yo-Kai Watch, but it'll have to be an estimated Monday gross. And don't expect much at all. Younger-skewing films, especially those that skew as young as Yo-Kai Watch did, have dismal weekdays outside of holidays, with weekdays for the entire week often only being 10-15% of the prior weekend gross.

I'm getting roughly ¥253 million ($2.2 million) on about 230,000 admissions for its first Monday. A big drop-off, of course, but not as low as I was expecting. Likely benefitted a bit from weekend spillover despite its demographic.

Opening Weekend: ¥1,628,893,000 ($14.0 million) / 1,484,916
3-day total (Sat.-Mon.): ¥1,881,890,000 ($16.2 million) / 1,714,916 *Estimate*

On Amazon Japan, in the Best Selling Books category, volume 1 of the manga is currently #1 and a box-set consisting of volumes 1-19 is #3. And in the more specific comics (manga) category, all 22 volumes are in the Top 26.

And the music isn't to be outdone either: On Oricon's music sales charts, the film's ending credits song "Homura" by LiSA is #1 on the daily ranking chart, and her song ""Gurenge" (the anime's opening song, and the best selling anime single of all-time) is back at #3 after 16-months since release. Back in July, "Gurenge" exceeded 1 million downloads to become just the third song in Oricon's history to reach Million-status on the digital charts. LiSA's latest studio album is also ranked #1.

Thanks for the charts Corpse and yes I would also love to see the 3-day opening weekend charts now that most movies have shifted towards Friday opening. I feel with DS:MT's Friday gross even more local movies will try to release movies on Friday.

I just started watching this series thanks to this thread, and I can see why it's so universally appealing (other than young kids I guess). It's definitely one of the best series I've seen, but even I would have doubted it would reach anywhere near these heights simply based on the quality of the show (Japan has no absence of great animes).

The anime is very good, definitely recommended to those here who are curious or interested about the series now. And since this film continues immediately where season one concludes, if you enjoyed the anime, you can see how the story continues by watching the film.

So Toho Cinemas is lifting the 50% capacity weekday restriction this week on Wednesday at their busier locations. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday will remain at 50% for the time being. Many of their busier locations are nearly sold out for the entire day today (and it's not even 11AM) due to the 50% restriction. Their theater in Namba only has 80 or so seats left for the entire day, for example, before 11AM.

And Monday is looking ridiculous. The Monday (MONDAY) is outpacing the Saturday and/or Sunday of almost everything. Versus Saturday, its Monday is only trailing Frozen II and Yo-Kai Watch 2. And versus Sunday, it's Monday is only trailing Frozen II, Toy Story 4, Yo-Kai Watch 2, and the last three Detective Conan films).

If it maintains this pace, and it may improve because it really should since this is a weekday (evening business is typically stronger), its Monday could finish between ¥500-600 million ($5/6 million) and 400,000+ admissions. Outside of holidays, and maybe even including them (will need to do research), this will easily be the biggest Monday ever.
