Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (10/03-04)
Happy to post that it seems I underestimated most films based on the current available figures. Not by too much, but enough for the weekend to go from unexciting to decent/fair.

>Tenet earns its third-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, delivering an excellent hold off just 15% to sell a further 122,000 admissions. After 17-days in release, Nolan's latest has sold 1.03 million admissions. The film is holding astoundingly better than any of Nolan's past films, and it has already outgross both The Dark Knight and Dunkirk to become his third biggest film in the market; and it's very likely to surpass The Dark Knight Rises next weekend to become his second biggest film. It won't be able to match the success of Inception, but it's on track for an impressive ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) total.

>The Asadas! settled for a second place debut in revenue, but actually managed a first place start in admissions by selling 126,000 over the weekend frame across 343 screens. This is likely a little below expectations, but I expect this one to be quite leggy as it's going to be a weekday film since it's skewing toward older audiences (50+). It should finish near ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>Violet Evergarden: The Movie remained nearly flat compared to last weekend and exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone after 17-days in release. It already surpassed the total of the last Violet Evergarden film, and at this rate, might come close to doubling it wit ha total around/above ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).

>Trolls: World Tour bombed, but that's not surprising and completely expected. I don't even think the first one received a theatrical release in the market, and if it did, it was a limited release. While DreamWorks animated films have been able to find a little more success in the market after Toho-Towa took over distribution rights, it's still a rare occurrence when one does find success in the market.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/03-04); Charts Update
Beginning October 16th, just in time for Demon Slayer's opening weekend interestingly enough, all but one of Toho's Cinemas will be back to 100% occupancy over the weekends. 11 of Toho's Cinemas (their busiest locations) went back to 100% occupancy this past weekend (October 3rd). Toho Cinemas is the second largest chain in the country, but the busiest.

And with that, Aeon Cinemas is the only major chain that hasn't announced when they'll be back to 100% occupancy.

However, to accommodate the mass pre-sales and buzz surrounding Demon Slayer (which will be aiming for a potential record opening weekend), Aeon has announced:

-Specific times to reserve seating at all of their locations starting on the 9th.
-Increasing the number of screens the film will be playing on at all of their locations (all of their locations will be playing the film).
-Earlier start time for the film, starting at 7:40AM for the stage greeting showings.
-They will also be broadcasting stage greetings (including a performance by LISA) with the cast at 40 of their locations, but no singing (the anime's opening song is the biggest selling anime single of all-time) will be permitted due to the virus.

Nearly all of the smaller chains went back to 100% occupancy on September 19th after the government fully lifted restrictions. So when Toho Cinemas takes their remaining theaters to 100% occupancy on October 16th, and assuming Aeon Cinemas is still at 50% at that point, around 75% of the country will be back to operating at 100%.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/03-04); Charts Update
Here is the rough timeline for how theaters in Japan closed and reopened. I've been including this off to the side when I post the Weekend #1 Films Chart above, but it's getting a bit cluttered, so here is a more in-depth listing of the events so far:

Closing Phase:
Mar. 28th: Urban Prefectures Declare State Of Emergency; Theaters Closed In 8/47 Prefectures; Nationwide Capacity Down To ~20-25%.
Apr. 18th: Government Declares State Of Emergency; All Theaters Closed; Nationwide Capacity Down To 0%.

Reopening Phase:
May 16th: Theaters Reopen In 39/47 Prefectures At 50% Occupancy; Nationwide Capacity Up To ~20-25%.
June 20th: All Theaters Reopen; 8/47 Prefectures At 25% Occupancy; Nationwide Capacity Up To ~30-35%.
July 18th: Theaters In 8/47 Prefectures Expand To 50% Occupancy; Nationwide Capacity Up To 50%.
Sept. 19th: Government Fully Lifts Capacity Restrictions; Most Chains Expand To 100% Occupancy; Nationwide Capacity Up To ~60-65%.
Oct. 3rd: 11/69 Toho Cinemas Resume 100% Occupancy; Nationwide Capacity Up To ~65-70%.
Oct. 16th: 68/69 Toho Cinemas Back To 100% Occupancy; Nationwide Capacity Up To ~75-80%.

Note: The selected dates aren't when the announcements or laws/regulations began or ended, but rather the date when they had an impact on the box-office.

Corpse, is it true that Stand by me Doraemon 2 is going to release on November 20? It was posted on doraemon's official website and eiga.com and it also stated that it will be released across 38 IMAX theatres.

That's correct!

And that should be a fine enough date. December would have been better, but they rescheduled Pokemon there after it got delayed from July. I was actually expecting them to release it March 2021 to take the spot of the annual Doraemon film that opens there (this year's film was delayed to August, as you know), but this now means that Toho is likely to release the annual Doraemon film next March as planned uninterrupted. 3 Doraemon films in a 12-month span!

I do expect a notable drop-off compared to the first Stand By Me, Doraemon though. I'm thinking ¥4/5 billion ($40-50 million), probably around the heights of the annual franchise. The first one was the first ever CGI Doraemon film, and was able to bring in generations of moviegoers versus the usual family crowd the annual films attract, so it performed well above the franchise norm. That novelty factor boost should largely vanish with the sequel.

NOTE: Highlighted Film = Newly added postponed film recently rescheduled.

Hollywood keeps delaying their films since releasing them in the U.S. is proving troublesome, so keeping track of them is a bit annoying. If they received a rescheduled date but was delayed again to a different date, I've labeled the first rescheduled date as OLD DATE and the most recent rescheduled date as NEW DATE as long as they still have a release date (month/year). And if they were delayed after being rescheduled at least once (thus making the list above), but don't have a new release date, I'm striking them.

Also, I'm guessing Hollywood will continue to delay their films, so I'm not going to bother adding Delayed Films From September onward. Only a few local films originally scheduled for September or later this year have been delayed, so it's not worth adding those months.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 2019 Versus 2020
Here is the Weekend Top 10 Breakdown between 2019 and 2020. And do keep in mind that 2019 was the biggest year ever at the Japan box-office in revenue, and was the most attended year in over 45 years. So 2020 is certainly up against the biggest prior year possible, really, and it doesn't help matters now that Hollywood is delaying almost all their films.

The Japan box-office can survive with just local films (local films have accounted for around 60% of the box-office every year since 2008), but obviously it'll be down without Hollywood films on the calendar.

2019 vs. 2020 Breakdown (Top 10 Films)

Week 52: ¥1.928

Top 10 Totals in billions of Yen.

The next six weeks (especially the five weeks to follow this upcoming weekend) look good, and could certainly be up in weeks 42-46 (weeks 42 and 43 in particular will be WAY up this year). I also don't think any more weekends this year will be down more than 50%, and even 40% is probably too high aside from weeks 47 and 51. I'm going to project that 2020 will be down 55-60% versus 2019 (again, biggest year ever) by the end of the year.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 2019 vs. 2020 (Top 10 Breakdown)
I think most countries would like their box-office to be down around 60% this year (possibly sub-50% with some luck). -42% has been the worst year-on-year decline since theaters reopened nationwide at 50% capacity, and besides this past weekend (due to the first weekend of last October being a record), it's gradually improved as capacity restrictions have been fully lifted.

That said, this weekend is going to be hampered by yet another typhoon hitting over this unfortunate weekend. This is the third year in a row that a typhoon has occurred over the second weekend in October.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
The 22nd volume of Demon Slayer, the second to last volume in the series, sold 2,204,279 copies last week (3-days!!!), the second biggest first week sales for any manga ever on record. And the series has sold over 70 million copies in about eleven months in just Japan, nearly double the old yearly record. It exceeded 100 million copies worldwide last week, too.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, the first movie in the series, opens next weekend at the box-office and is going to be a true monster, certainly a potential record-setting opening weekend is in play. It's becoming one of the most hyped theatrical releases in the history of Japan's box-office.

When it opens next Friday (Oct. 16th), around 75% of theaters will be back to operating at 100% capacity, and every chain that has released screen/showtime info so far has it playing on a record/near-record level in terms of seats/showtimes.

And the remaining 25% or so, Aeon Cinemas, while choosing to remain at 50% capacity, is giving it an insane amount of screens and showings as a result to accommodate it. It's playing on as many as half of their location'screens, and it's playing 30-40 times a day at their busiest locations.

I'll provide much more information in the final days leading up to its release next Friday.

Thankfully this year's typhoon is staying a decent bit off the coast, and won't make landfall over the weekend. It's still doing to result in heavy rains and some strong winds, but the impact seems pretty minimal (especially compared to the monster storm that hit last year).

Saturday holds were all pretty normal, mostly in the 25/30% range. Tenet is going to repeat at #1 for a fourth weekend, and will likely surpass The Dark Knight Rises on Sunday to become Nolan's second biggest film in the market. Sunday is when the worst part of the typhoon will be affecting the Tokyo region, so the day might be a bit weaker than normal. And Monday is a national holiday, so some of the Sunday (and general weekend) spillover from anyone wanting to stay in due to the storm could boost Monday.

The Weekend Top 10 should be down a respectable 25/30% versus last year.

While I'm working on the Weekend Estimates at this moment, can you give me its release date in the meantime? I'll look it up for you later today

Sorry about that. It released on March 3, 2018. Someanithing reports it making ¥550,000,000 or $4.98 million across 11 weekends with 74+ screens. Sounds crazy good if true. What are the typical budgets and expected performances for anime films with limited releases? How many Blu-rays and DVDs do they need to move to break-even at minimum? The only numbers I've seen are 3,000-5,000. Would you say that's accurate?

>Tenet is now Nolan's second biggest film in Japan, only behind Inception, after another excellent hold. A total north of ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) is locked up now, and it might even get pretty close to reaching the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone. But I wouldn't expect a total quite that high, however, since it's losing all its IMAX screens to Demon Slayer next weekend.

>The Asadas! opened to a so-so result last weekend, but as expected since it's an older-skewing film, it did exceptionally well over the weekdays (around 50% better than its opening weekend) and won't end up with a disappointing total after all. It'll probably end up finishing near the ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) mark.

The Weekend Top 10 is down a respectable 24% versus the same weekend last year, based on estimates. Monday is a national holiday, so the Weekend Actuals will be delayed until Tuesday. I'll post Monday's estimates tomorrow though while we wait.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Christopher Nolan Box Office History
Christopher Nolan - Box-Office History:

Opening Weekends:
¥780.0 million ($7.8 million) / 600,000 - Inception*
¥372.0 million ($4.6 million) / 269,170 - The Dark Knight Rises
¥333.2 million ($3.1 million) / 248,167 - The Dark Knight
¥326.8 million ($3.1 million) / 199,559 - Tenet
¥323.9 million ($3.0 million) / 220,149 - Dunkirk
¥290.2 million ($2.7 million) / 215,000 - Batman Begins
¥193.4 million ($1.7 million) / 137,490 - Interstellar
¥171.4 million ($1.4 million) / 128,389 - Insomnia
¥112.6 million ($0.9 million) / x95,516 - The Prestige

*Note: Japan Box-Office History Lesson:
Inception's opening weekend (above) was a reported 6-day gross from Warner Bros. that included previews and its Friday earnings. In order to claim a #1 debut when it opened (because it would have been #3), Warner Bros. was kinda shady and combined all of its figures together in order to do so. And due to this happening, Eiren (Producers Association of Motion Pictures) ruled that previews and early showings could no longer be reported as part of a film's opening weekend gross. So, Inception holds the honor (dishonor?) of being the LAST film in the market to have early showings/previews included in its opening weekend. And almost no studio bothers with previews anymore as a result since they are excluded, thus lowering the opening weekend potential.

Totals:
¥3.50 billion ($42.9 million) / 2.70 million - Inception
¥2.07 billion ($19.6 million) / 1.27 million - Tenet [After 4 Weeks in Release] *Est.*
¥1.97 billion ($24.2 million) / 1.49 million - The Dark Knight Rises
¥1.64 billion ($14.7 million) / 1.17 million - Dunkirk
¥1.60 billion ($15.8 million) / 1.25 million - The Dark Knight
¥1.40 billion ($14.1 million) / 1.08 million - Batman Begins
¥1.25 billion ($10.8 million) / 0.91 million - Interstellar
¥950.0 million ($7.8 million) / 0.73 million - Insomnia *Est.*
¥500.0 million ($4.1 million) / 0.38 million - The Prestige *Est.*

The ¥550m is from one of those 5ch film gross threads, might have been CineJun yearlies or something: https://medaka.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/an ... 26/278-279

The video disc release for Dead Apple sold 26,355. However, you can't look at DVD/BD sales for "break-even", it's a lot more complicated than that, especially for films which have box office receipts. Anime (maybe other productions too, but I only look at anime) is funded via a committee model where a number of companies come together and pool investment and each manage one or more revenue streams. So the company publishing the video discs cares about the DVD/BD sales, but they're not necessarily relevant to the other companies on the committee, who may be benefiting more directly from, say, music sales, or international licensing, or whatever else.

So think of it like each individual company on the committee having their own break-even point, not the anime production itself having a single break-even point.

Edit: The production committee for the film was:

Kadokawa
Bones
Lantis
Klockworx
Kadokawa Media House
Bandai Namco Live Creative
Movic
Sony Music Communications
Glovision
WOWOW

Pretty sizable committee, and the order in which they're listed is generally the order of how much money they invested.

Understood. What would you make of the Polygon Pictures Godzilla anime trilogy? Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (2017), Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (2018), and Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2018). Toho recently referred to it as a success in the press release for a new Godzilla anime television series by Bones. From the numbers I've been able to find here and elsewhere, collectively the trilogy made $7 million from 158 screens per film and 18,200+ total DVD/BD sales. I haven't been able to find budgets, though I doubt the films cost much. How does Netflix factor into this or anime in general? The trilogy was originally meant to be a television series and putting them in theaters as films seems like a last minute decision to make extra money. I imagine whatever they cost were accounted in the deal with Netflix and their box office potential was hurt by everyone knowing they would be on Netflix. Do you buy Toho's claim?

I would go with somekindofthing on this one. Budgets are hard to come by in the market, but generally budgets don't exceed ¥1 billion unless it's a major production, and are typically much less than that. I'd be surprised if Dead Apple didn't make a profit.

And I'll contribute by adding that grossing ¥550 million ($5 million) isn't unusual for a limited anime film playing on 74 screens. I wouldn't even say it's great. It's good, certainly, but it's not uncommon for them to approach ¥1 billion ($10 million) sometimes, and I'm sure a few have grossed above ¥1 billion, too.

Someone recently asked about the Violet Garden films in this thread, and the film released last year earned around ¥800 million ($7/8 million) on fewer than 100 screens. It's just one example of many.

I don't know anything about Godzilla in particular (and I try very hard to ignore the existence of 3DCG productions in general) but as for Netflix, most of the time they're acting like any other company in a licensing or co-funding role. A lot of people treat them as special because they've got mainstream brand recognition. But their model for anime isn't fundamentally different from what, say, Crunchyroll does.

Sometimes they simply license the online distribution rights for shows that were already fully produced and funded by a JP committee. Sometimes they are on the committee and providing funding just like any other members. And occasionally they are the primary instigator/funder of the production overall. They aren't the only company that does any of these things. What they are, though, is successful at getting people to buy into the "Netflix Originals" gimmick, even when what they're streaming is in no way an original production they themselves produced and fully funded. It's a marketing tactic I find quite disingenuous. But unfortunately it works, so Crunchyroll has been adopting the same phrasing and I'm expecting Funimation to start a similar branding at some point. Really the only thing unique about Netflix is that they have infinite money to throw around.

I've been saying that today, Monday, is a national holiday (Health and Sports Day), but I just read that it was actually moved to July 24th this year in order to coincide with the 2020 Olympics. But we know how that went, and the holiday wasn't moved back.

So, no delay in the weekend actuals after all. They should be available tomorrow as usual.
