Stronger weekend frame than I expected, but weaker holiday Monday results.

Actuals will be released tomorrow evening.

Fastest to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster) - 90 Days or Less

25 - Spirited Away (2001)
28 - Your Name. (2016)
28 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
30 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
31 - Ponyo (2008)
33 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
34 - Weathering With You (2019)
35 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
37 - Frozen (2014)
37 - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
41 - Aladdin (2019)
42 - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
43 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
44 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban (2004)
45 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
47 - Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (1999)
50 - Avatar (2009)
52 - Toy Story 3 (2010)

53 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

74 - Toy Story 4 (2019)
74 - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)

Note: Not enough data available for a few films that likely would make this list, primarily including: Titanic, Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Antarctica.

Toy Story 4 broke ¥10 billion on its 74th day in release. It took much longer to reach the milestone than expected following its mammoth opening weekend, but achieving a ¥10 billion total is still achieving a ¥10 billion total -- very, very impressive.

It will enter limited release soon though, and since its normal weekdays are dismal (outside the Top 25), it'll probably finish between ¥10.05-¥10.10 billion.

Since you're been keeping up with the film, you probably saw that it debuted in the U.S. this past Tuesday, coming in 11th place. And then it ranked 3rd(!) on Thursday.

I don't know GKIDS' future plans for it, but it's already their fifth highest grossing release ever. It looks like they can get $1 million+ from it without much effort really, which would make it their second highest grossing release.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Autumnal Equinox Da
So that I don't have to update the list above later, and just edit it now -- Toy Story 4 did exceed ¥10 billion on Monday, its 74th day in release. It has grossed ¥10,010,985,900 ($93.7 million) on 7,787,223 admissions after eleven weeks (plus Monday) in release.

This makes it the third film this year to reach the uber-blockbuster milestone of ¥10 billion. If you look at just the calendar year (January to December), 2019 now ties 2004 for the most ¥10 billion earners. But, the Japanese box-office year goes from December to November, so using that, it's tied for second place with 2003 and 2010 with three films each. 2004 holds the that record in the Japanese box-office year with five films above ¥10 billion (Finding Nemo and The Last Samurai, being December releases, were counted as 2004 releases).

Frozen 2 will very likely exceed ¥10 billion later this year, too, which will allow 2019 to best 2004 in the calendar year (Jan.-Dec.) for most ¥10 billion earners to claim the record.

14 (10) ¥x46,356,900 ($431,000), -52%, ¥1,024,602,600 ($9.6 million), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Sony) WK4

NOTE: Cumulative Totals are updated through Monday, September 23rd, due to the holiday.

>Hit Me Anyone One More Time holds strong atop the weekend box-office in its second weekend, delivering a great hold, selling a further 280,000 admissions; its eleven-day admissions reached 1,379,662. Director Koki Mitani's latest is performing very well so far, and with a fairly open upcoming release schedule, should continue to post great holds for a while. It's aiming for a total above ¥3 billion (~$30 million).

>Kaguya-sama: Love is War continues its somewhat surprisingly good performance, selling an additional 143,000 admissions in its third weekend of release; it has sold 1,242,290 admissions after eighteen-days in release. Expect a finish slightly above the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone.

>Ad Astra struggled in its debut, only coming in third place selling 122,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 386 screens; and selling 218,906 admissions over the long four-day holiday weekend. Brad Pitt is a proven draw in the market, and the reviews were there for this one, but it largely disappointed. In my opinion, it was released too early and was unable to generate much interest with the day-and-date release, which is very common in the market.

>Weathering With You remains steady in fourth place over its tenth-weekend of release, selling 112,000 more admissions over the weekend. Makoto Shinkai's latest has now sold a staggering 9,826,766 admissions after sixty-seven days in release. The film is receiving a 4DX expansion next weekend, and while it was already going to exceed 10 million admissions with little trouble -- becoming just the tenth domestic and eighteenth overall film to ever do so -- it'll get there even faster now. Expect a finish around ¥14 billion ($130 million), enough to earn it the #12 position on the Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time list.

>Hello World disappointed in its debut, failing to break into the Top 5. Its weekend figure above remains an estimate (EDIT: Actual Posted), but its four-day total is accurate. And after its first four days of release, it has sold 155,596 admissions over 255 screens.

>The Lion King continues its unfortunate quick descent, and it's definitely not reaching the ¥7 billion milestone now. It also continues to shred theaters/screens at an alarming rate, so I wouldn't expect much more than ¥6.6/6.7 billion ($63 million). That's still a good, respectable result, but its late legs have left much to be desired.

Since you're been keeping up with the film, you probably saw that it debuted in the U.S. this past Tuesday, coming in 11th place. And then it ranked 3rd(!) on Thursday.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?p ... romare.htm

I don't know GKIDS' future plans for it, but it's already their fifth highest grossing release ever. It looks like they can get $1 million+ from it without much effort really, which would make it their second highest grossing release.

Yeah, that's pretty crazy. It kinda helped make the numbers jump out that the release was only two days, first for the dubbed and then for the subbed version, so everyone flocked to catch the movie. In a sense, it's like a rock band: come and see them, in town only for two nights, loud rock music, flaming motorcycles and robots kicking the snot out of each other.

Studio Trigger is a pretty good call to hype, but I wish they have a plan to turn that from a flash-in-the-pan event to a release that can sow the seeds of the good audience responce it had. Maybe another two-night event with some of the same locations that could gather rewatchers and some new ones thrown in for people who missed it, or something that will help the movie go around a bit more

That said, I'm way more curious to see how the japanese release will continue stacking up and if it has any chance to reach 1,5 billion yen. Here's how's it gone since the last time it cracked your weekend posts

¥816,418,700 W7 07/07 (43 days) (Last time you tracked it)
¥887,996,200 W8 + Marine Day 15/07 (51 days) (According to this twitter user. Actually very reliable.)
¥1,000,000,000 W12+2 days 13/08 (82 days) report day
¥1,100,000,000 W15+2 days 03/09 (103 days) report day
¥1,186,374,600 W17 15/09 (115 days) Same twitter user
¥1,200,000,000 W17+5 days 20/09 (120 days) report day
¥1,211,466,800 W18 22/09 (122 days)Same twitter user

Report days mean that the actual milestone was most propably met the day before the report, which puts them all one day earlier. The only real difference is for the latest figure, if it was made in 2 or 3 (most propably) days instead.

So yeah, even if it's not much, the movie has been constantly making some money, about 100,000,000 yen every 22ish days. Funilly the slower stretch was from 0,888 to 1bil, propably because the movie had lost a lot of screens to the summer blockbusters that later regained, thanks to the continued support. That stretch was also marked by small giveaways (including 20 minutes worth of extra footage in the form of two 10min prequels that were moviegoer bonuses at the first weeks of the run, or a commemorative illustration to celebrate 100 days of screening. Now, the 4d screens come Friday 18/10 and the 150th day in the theaters comes the same Sunday, 20/10, so who knows what they may do for that. And well, eventually these legs should peter out. The movie should be able to reach 1,3bil before 4d arrives, and propably 1,4 with the help of that, but would that be enough to bring it in range of 1,5?

(Also I wonder how much it plays a role that the sole sponsor of the film is the Xflag company, instead of the usual committee system made to found anime)

And a Promare/current weekend question, if Hello World and Ni no kuni a couple weeks earlier had a disappointing opening, just how bad were the ones of Promare and Ride your wave?

I've once again included it on the 2019: Top Grossing Films list in highlight (still playing/tracked) with the updated total.

The 4D expansion will likely be lucrative given how leggy the film has been, and thanks to its loyal fanbase. ¥1.5 billion seems too much to me, but don't rule it out. They're either going to aim for it if possible, or if not, they'll definitely push it to exceed 1 million admissions.

To my knowledge, it hasn't had its admissions updated in many weeks, so I've been having to estimate since the last time its admissions were available. I think it was around 700,000/750,000 when it broke ¥1 billion. I'm estimating it's around 900,000 now. I'm going to predict they'll keep it playing until it at least reaches 1 million admissions.

Promare never had its 2-day opening weekend released (I estimated ¥65 million), but its 3-day opening was ¥97,519,600 on 200 screens. Not good, definite bomb territory. But, it remained very, very stable (remaining flat, enjoying small gains/decreases) for many weeks after it opened. And, as you can see, it's gone on to have an incredible running total relative to its very poor debut. It's definitely one of the top performers this year.

Ride Your Wave opened to a very disappointing ¥82,467,900 in its debut on a significant count of 299 screens. Unlike Promare, it was unable to find an audience and experienced big drops after opening. I don't know its final figure, and it quickly fell out of the Top 20/25 (in only its fourth week...), but I'd estimate it finished around ¥250/300 million (tops). And it's definitely one of the worst performers this year.

Not much going on this weekend, and it'll be the weakest this year since the first weekend of April.

>Ninkyo Gakuen is the only wide release (barely) and will have very little impact on the weekend box-office. I have it debuting in the Top 10, but it's certainly possible it could end up missing it.

>Hit Me Anyone One More Time will achieve a third-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, unopposed. It's going to end up exceeding ¥3 billion (~$30 million) quite easily, and could gross as much as ¥3.5 billion ($32/33 million). This is a strong total for a September/October release.

>Weathering With You is receiving its 4DX expansion in its eleventh-weekend of release, and should remain roughly flat versus last weekend (doubt it sways more than +/- 10%) to rise to second place. It was up almost 10% Friday-to-Friday in admissions, and after factoring in the 4D ticket prices, it perhaps enjoyed a ~15% bump in revenue. I don't believe it'll see quite that high of an increase over the weekend, but don't be surprised if it does see a slight jump (1-5%).

>Hit Me Anyone One More Time achieves its third consecutive weekend atop the box-office, going unchallenged for the #1 position, selling a further 185,000 admissions. Koki Mitani's latest is very likely to exceed the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone, and could climb a high as ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million). This is a very impressive result for an early Fall release, and it should have a safe spot in the Yearly Top 20.

>Weathering With You rose to second place in its eleventh-weekend of release, as predicted, thanks to its 4DX expansion; and while the hold is certainly great, it is, perhaps, just slightly worse than expected going into the weekend. Makoto Shinkai's latest uber-blockbuster sold 85,000 admissions over its eleventh weekend, and has now sold an incredible 9,972,393 admissions after seventy-three days in release. It'll exceed 10 million admissions on Tuesday (probably <5,000 away after Monday), which will make it the eighteenth overall and tenth domestic film in history to ever achieve this accomplishment.

>Kaguya-sama: Love is War continues its surprisingly welcomed good performance, and has locked up an eventual ¥2 billion (~$20 million) total with another good hold.

>Ad Astra delivered a disappointing debut last weekend, coming in third place, but its second weekend is probably even more disappointing. It's uncommon for any film besides heavily frontloaded fanbase films to drop over 50% in their sophomore frame, so a 57% decline is very alarming here. A ¥1 billion (~$10 million) total was unlikely after its debut, but now that milestone has become impossible.

>Ninkyo Gakuen remains estimated. It ranked in ninth place in weekend admissions, and that's probably where it debuted in revenue as well. Sometimes in takes a day or two longer for limited/near-limited releases from independent distributors to report their numbers, so I'll update this post with its actual figures when/if they're released.

>The Lion King just keeps on slipping and will probably see a severe screen/theater cut next weekend. It will, at least, surpass Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald sometime this week (probably Friday) to become the #5 film of 2019, but it looks to finish around ¥6.65 billion (~$62.6 million), which will be just shy of allowing it to break into the All-Time Top 100 (¥6.71 billion is required).

>Toy Story 4 has fallen outside of the Top 20 now and will enter limited release as soon as next week. Its weekend number wasn't reported due to being too low, but its cumulative total is now ¥10.04 billion ($94.0 million) after twelve-weeks in release.
