Yeah, it should probably gross $12/13 million which would just put it over the commercial success mark of 1 billion yen.

The screen count was pretty aggressive, too.

All three major locations have now reported their Top Films of the Weekend. The National Top 10 will be available early morning.

From looking at the results of the major locations,

1,778 Stories of Me and My Wife will take the top spot with relative ease.

Tron is looking at another hefty drop.

And there looks to finally be a slightly noticeable difference between Yamato and Potter this weekend after posting nearly identical drops and grosses the past several weeks.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Rankings
Openers this upcoming weekend (1/22):

Documentary of AKB48 (Toho)
Tensou Sentai Goseiger vs Shinkenger: Epic on the Silver Screen (TOEI)
Green Hornet (Sony)
The Story of You and the Dog: A Dog Movie 2 (Asmik Ace)
Due Date (Warner Bros.)
Law Abiding Citizen (Broad Media)

Documentary of AKB48 is only opening on 72 screens (I did see 90 in one article though), but with their massive fanbase, and 2010 dominance in music, it's going to have a huge per screen average.

Law Abiding Citizen (Perfect Revenge) may not be going wide. I haven't read anything regarding it's release. I'm not familiar with the distributor either, so a wide release doesn't sound likely.

9 7 Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider OOO & W Feat. Skull Movie Taisen Core (TOEI) 5
10 8 Shrek Forever After (Paramount) 5

Oooh, very close between the two openers. One ranks 1st in admissions, while the other ranks 1st in gross:

1,778 Stories opens with Y159,695,200 ($1.93 million); 121,783 admissions on 315 screens.

The Social Network opened with Y160,938,100 ($1.95 million); 116,309 admissions on 328 screens. It must have played stronger at smaller locations.

Partners 2 exceeds 2 million admissions for about 2.4 billion yen ($29 million) after four weeks.

And Harry Potter 7 exceeded 6.5 billion yen ($78.6 million) after nine weeks.

Space Battleship Yamato should be over 3.8 billion yen ($46 million) after seven weeks.

I'm going to post Eiga's Top 30 Most Popular Films every Tuesday instead of Thursday as I originally planned.

The Golden Globes helped the Oscar films gain some buzz.

Pirates ranking so well already is an early indication on how big it's going to be.

Narnia missing is a big worrisome.

Image

And I didn't mention Gantz last week when asked about some of the bigger domestic releases this year. It's also being release in North America in 300 theaters this weekend. Not sure why NA gets it a week before Japan though.

Gantz has potential to become a big hit, and it's sequel is being release on April 23rd (start of Golden Week).

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Rankings
Some big new concerning ticket prices in Japan.

Toho, the largest cinema complex and distributor in the country, has announced that starting this Spring the general admission fee (18 years or older) of 1,800 yen ($21.50) will be reduced to 1,500 yen ($18.25).

Toho accounts for 25% of the country's screens, so this deflation will have a significant impact for the entire film industry.

Toho President, Nakagawa Takashi, said the price of 1,800 yen wasn't meeting the expectations of moviegoers, filmmakers, and wants to make ticket prices acceptable for all movie fans. The aim being to increase attendance.

http://www.sponichi.co.jp/entertainment ... 80100.html

This is very surprising, being the first major full scale ticket price change for the company. And attendance of 2010 was much higher than previous years, particularly for Toho who had their best year to date.

No word on how the move will effect 3D tickets. Currently, the general admission fee for 3D ticket prices at Toho locations are 2,100 yen ($25.50).

The average ticket price has remained practically the same for well over 10 years now (fluctuates between 1,200-1,300).

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Toho announces admission fee ch
Takashi Yamazaki (live-action Space Battleship Yamato, Returner, Ballad) will direct the third live-action film based on Ryohei Saigan's nostalgic Sanchōme no Yūhi - Yūyake no Uta manga, and the Always: Sunset on Third Street '64 film will open in stereoscopic 3D in Japan in 2012.

The original manga, a 1990-1991 television anime series adaptation, and the first two live-action films followed the lives of people in a Tokyo neighborhood as the iconic Tokyo Tower rises above them. The new film is set in 1964, the year that Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympics that came to symbolize Japan's post-war revival. The third film's timeframe is actually not covered in the original manga, but Saigan approved the production of the film and contributed various ideas to the screenplay. (1964 is also the setting for THINK Corporation's Showa Monogatari/Showa-Era Story anime film and television series.)

Yamazaki is shooting the third film in stereoscopic 3D, unlike some recent films like Alice in Wonderland and The Last Message Umizaru which were shot in 2D and then converted into stereoscopic 3D. Yamazaki and Ryota Kosawa co-wrote the screenplay as they did for the first films. Similarly, Naoki Sato is returning from the first two films to compose the music. Hidetaka Yoshioka, Shinichi Tsutsumi, Koyuki, Maki Horikita, Masako Motai, Tomokazu Miura, and Hiroko Yakushimaru will reprise their respective roles from the previous two films.

The first Always: Sunset on Third Street film opened in November of 2005, and it would win 13 of its 14 nominated categories at the 29th Japan Academy Prize ceremony. The second film opened in November of 2007 and earned over 4.5 billion yen (about US$55 million).

Definitely a film to keep an eye on come 2012, and should easily be one of the biggest releases that year.

It falls into a difficult category of foreign animated films.

As you know, Dreamwork animated films always disappoint (except Kung Fu Panda) , while Pixar animated films always do very well (except Cars). Both of the exceptions having a sequel this year is funny. Tangled will fall into the category of films below:

Chicken Little - 2.68 billion yen
Bolt - 1.65 billion yen
Brother Bear - 1.60 billion yen
A Christmas Carol - 1.60 billion yen
Happy Feet - 1.45 billion yen
Robots - 1.40 billion yen
Despicable Me - 1.25 billion yen
Over the Hedge - 1.10 billion yen
The Polar Express - 1.05 billion yen
The Corpse Bride - 1.0 billion yen

The above are all the most recent non-Dreamworks, non-Pixar animated foreign films that have grossed 1 billion yen or more. Chicken Little is the clear standout here, with it's 3D at the time being heavily marketable.

I would say Tangled is looking to gross up to 1.5 billion yen ($18 million). 3D screens will be very limited when it opens in March, however, due to one or more wide 3D films being released every weekend for a month starting Feb. 25th with Narnia. Japan is becoming 3D happy this year.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
It's highly unlikely Tangled breaks out (2 billion yen or more) because of all the 3D competition. From Feb. 26 - Mar. 26, seven wide 3D films are opening.

To be considered a commercial success, a film needs to gross 1 billion yen. That may only be $6/7 million, or as much as double that depending on the exchange rate, so it's much more reliable to compare success in local currency and admissions.

For whatever reason, I suppose the source of their numbers, BOM stops tracking many films in Japan once they fall out of the Top 10 for too long. But about $17 million looks right because of the exchange rate.

Kung Fu Panda grossed 2.0 billion yen, which makes it Dreamworks biggest original film, and second biggest overall behind Shrek 2 (2.5 billion yen).

Several of Dreamworks original films have grossed over 1 billion yen. Dragon, Bee Movie, and Monsters Vs Aliens missed the mark, and I'd bet on Megamind missing it too when it's released on March 26th.

But it's the sequels that have resulted in huge disappointments, having all experienced massive drops over 50% (as much as 80% in Ice Age 3's case) and have failed to reach the 1 billion milestone. Shrek remains the only exception. We'll see how this may effect Kung Fu Panda 2, with the original having excellent legs.

I can't post much right now, but based on Saturday admissions from the usual locations, The Social Network is looking good for a sub 10% second weekend drop.

Compared to last Saturday (usual locations):

Openers:

Documentary of AKB48 - Limited release (less than 100 screens) reveals no comparisons.
Goseiger vs Shinkenger - 42.4% of Kamen Rider last month.
The Green Hornet - 85.7% of The Social Network last Saturday.

Holdovers:

The Social Network (-8.6%)
1,778 Stories of Me and My Wife (-19.1%)
Partners, The Movie 2 (-27.8%)
Space Battleship Yamato (-38.2%)
Unstoppable (-41.3%)
Harry Potter 7 (-45.7%)
Tron (-47.9%)

If all these are accurate for the remaining locations, and on Sunday, it's going to be a very close race to the top between AKB48 (no comparisons), Goseiger, and Social Network.

AKB48 is expected to open to 150 million yen ($1.8 million) or so, and the numbers above would put Goseiger and The Social Network around 150 million yen.

There are a few more updates in the 2011 thread. The final update will be posted soon when everything for the entire 2010 year is released (admissions, gross, market share, films released, etc.). It should all be available this week.

We may not get an actual for The Expendables though. If it failed to hit 1 billion yen, it wont be included in official updates.

Weekend (01-22-23, 2011) Admission Rankings by Locations (TOHO, SHIKOKU, WARNER):

TOHO

1 - Documentary of AKB48: To Be Continued (Toho) NEW
2 1 1,778 Stories of Me and My Wife (Toho) 2
3 2 The Social Network (Sony) 2
4 - The Green Hornet (Sony) NEW
5 3 Unstoppable (Fox) 3
6 - Tensou Sentai Goseiger vs Shinkenger: Epic on the Silver Screen (TOEI) NEW
7 4 Partners, The Movie 2 (TOEI) 5
8 5 Inazuma Eleven (Toho) 5
9 - The Story of You and the Dog: A Dog Movie 2 (Asmik Ace) NEW
10 6 Space Battleship Yamato (Toho) 8

Admission Rankings by Location this weekend will be misleading. AKB48 may only be playing at Toho locations for one, also, TOEI releases almost always perform worse here than at other locations.

SHIKOKU and WARNER to follow later tonight.

Weekend Estimates
January 22-23, 2011

1 1 The Social Network (Sony) - 165 million yen ($1.99 million), +2%. Week 2
2 2 1,778 Stories of Me and My Wife (Toho) - 156 million yen ($1.89 million), -2% Week 2
3 - The Green Hornet (Sony) - 149 million yen ($1.80 million), NEW
4 - Documentary of AKB48 (Toho) - 117 million yen ($1.41 million), NEW
5 - Tensou Sentai Goseiger vs Shinkenger: Epic on the Silver Screen (TOEI) - 110 million yen ($1.33 million), NEW

6 4 Partners, The Movie 2 (TOEI) - 103 million yen ($1.25 million), -17%, Week 5
7 3 Unstoppable (Fox) - 82 million yen ($.99 million), -34%, Week 3
8 5 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I (Warner Bros.) - 46 million yen ($.56 million), -35% Week 10
9 7 Inazuma Eleven (Toho) - 43 million yen ($.52 million), -32%, Week 5
10 - The Story of You and the Dog: A Dog Movie 2 (Asmik Ace) - 41 million yen ($.49 million), NEW

Incredible for both The Social Network (has to be playing almost exclusively in Urban areas to explain the big difference in admission vs gross rankings because it should be 3rd or 4th in admissions this weekend) and 1,778 Stories, increasing/decreasing only 2%!

And that would give AKB48 a pta of about $16,000.

So far, January has been full of small openers, but Gantz is coming up next weekend and is expected to open very well (350/400 million yen at least).

Select totals and admissions should be available tomorrow.
