My vote would probably be Titanic just because it did something crazy like a 50x multiplier off its OW and was #1 for 22 weeks. Only Frozen and Bohemian Rhapsody have gotten close to that kind of legginess with over 30x multipliers each.

DS for me. Not even close considering where admits as a % of national population will likely end up.

Me, I think I would vote for Frozen because he's been so successful in maintaining himself over the weekends which holds the record for every weekend from 8th and even Demon Slayer won't be able to surpass that, I think Frozen will keep those records there forever and in addition it is the only film with Spirited Away (and soon Demon Slayer) to exceed 20 million admissions.

I could have chosen Demon Slayer but I find more impressive films which manage to last for weeks and weeks rather than those which have a big OW but which have a lower multiplier.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
I don't think there's a singular answer. I know that's the cheap way out from giving an answer, but there are several contenders.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial has the admissions to suggest it had a crazy run. Spielberg was already a known name, so it's probably safe to assume it had a pretty good opening. It was the #1 film until Princess Mononoke in 1997. And since Princess Mononoke also broke the opening weekend record (540,000 admissions), we can presume that E.T. had a huge multiplier by simply going below that figure, so that's a 20 minimum but honestly it was probably much, much higher (probably like a 30/40). It was probably an earlier "mini" Titanic.

Titanic is obviously a contender as well. Ultra-leggy performance, perhaps the leggiest ever (or at least known). The only thing that's sort of against it is its admissions. It didn't claim the admissions record (falling several million short), and three films have since sold more tickets than it, too.

Your Name. is a contender from coming out of nowhere. Its director had been around for awhile, but he never had a box office success (not even close) until Your Name.. It also opened at the end of Summer and on less than 300 screens, clearly indicating it wasn't meant to be huge success, much less go on to becoming the fourth biggest film ever (at the time) and get near 20 million admissions. It recorded more consecutive weeks in the top 10 than Spirited Away, as well.

Bohemian Rhapsody is an unusual one to consider, but it is definitely apart of this discussion. It was even leggier than Frozen, Spirited Away, Your Name., etc. What sets its apart from other leggy musicals, such as The Greatest Showman or Les Miserables, is that it took their leggy precedence and ran away with it, setting a new high, and almost sold 10 million admissions. Later on you'll see how crazy its later weekends were as I post the Biggest Weekend Charts with Demon Slayer on them.

Frozen, easy addition to this list. Walt Disney Animation had NEVER had a blockbuster film (all failing to reach just ¥5 billion) in the market and then Frozen happened. And it became just the second film to ever reach 20 million admissions. If Disney hadn't gotten extra-greedy to rush the home video release, it would have out-grossed Titanic to become the #2 all-time film (at the time) and probably gotten within a couple billion of Spirited Away.

Demon Slayer, from its opening weekend alone, deserves a spot here. It didn't just break the opening weekend record, in addition to every single day record, and every sort of record (no exaggeration) possible during its first three/four weeks. It completely obliterated them (its third week was big enough to claim all the records). It has broken so many records and in such a ridiculously short amount of time, they'll almost certainly never be broken, certainly not in our lifetimes. And...it's going to beat Spirited Away and become the #1 all-time film in revenue AND admissions. Easily. It's just a different type of contender, as Japan is all about legs and all its biggest films were ultra-leggy films, and has set a precedent all its own in the market. However, we don't know where it's headed either. It opened on a ridiculous scale, but it's barely slowed down. Its seventh weekend is going to be on par with the opening weekends of most uber-blockbusters. For all we know, it could keep going and gross over ¥40 billion ($400 million). It wouldn't be exactly difficult since it's still posting such massive numbers in its seventh week.

The only film that I wouldn't included, shockingly enough, is Spirited Away. I only say this because, while it had a hugely impressive run, clearly one of the best ever, it was 100% expected to be huge and be a contender for the #1 all-time spot, which it would claim. Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli had long since established themselves atop the box office world, and this was his follow-up (another "retirement" film) to Princess Mononoke that had claimed the #1 all-time spot for a short time.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
DS is more an an Endgame shaped run (not in an absolute sense, just relative to Japan), a lot of these other movies are more Avatar shaped. It comes down to personal preference to some degree, but I tend to go with the monster openers as long as they really do set a new #1 total as well.

It’s not like DS is going to have poor legs either, it’s been having strong holds and continues to rack up new records at a silly pace with the OW more than a month in the rear view mirror. A lot of these records are more untouchable imo than those of the leggy run style movies, and it”s also a more unique kind of strength for the market. Just fantastic.

Of the very leggy ones I would personally go with Frozen, the admits are so impressive relative to pre-release expectations as are the later weekend records.

Seems like 260-280k Saturday in usual locs. That shall give ¥480-530mn.

Unless some correction, thinking ¥400-425mn tomorrow for weekend of ¥880-950mn.

For Sunday I agree, but for Saturday since @Corpse forecasts an increase of 25% and maybe even in the 30% compared to last Saturday I will have seen more on a Saturday around ¥ 550-570mn, even if you might be right we'll see it all over the course of the day

I'd say that after the 2PM update we will have a clearer picture.

But saturday looks good for a ¥500>550 day, let's hope it ends up in the higher end...

If im not mistaken, mimorin projection is based on the data from the day last week? If so, it is projecting this Saturday based on the last Saturday perfomance and since last weekend all the business went to Sunday so...

Are you saying this by looking at the available tickets? Because I'm pretty sure mimorin messed something up there. I don't know if theres also a mistake in the admissions (I'd say no), but the total seats are definitely broken.

Just look the fact that despite getting put back on the biggest screens that got taken away from Doraemon Demon Slayer is somehow listed as having less available tickets than last saturday (620k vs 670k last saturday). The top 10 as a whole has a whopping -600k seats compared to last saturday, and theres showings that have allegedly reached 100% of their seats at 11AM yet have kept going for thousands more. So imho, the projected total seats are messed up all around.

As of now Sat is up 50% so it'd have to completely crumble to end up almost even with last sat.

Yeah I am looking that. That's why I said unless there is some correction.

The other way is, looking at previous give away Saturday. At 14:00 previous give away Saturday was 217k on 45% shows, this Saturday so far is 144k on 56% shows. The absolute comparison will go for 300k range but show count seems messed up.

The total seats aren't broken for today.

Rather, the program didn't calculate the seats for the day correctly in its morning update yesterday (must have counted Toho at 50% capacity by mistake). The program "only" had it at 620,000 seats or something for today, but that's less than last Saturday and that's impossible. I'm guessing it's back up to 800,000 or more, because it got the biggest screen at all locations back from Doraemon in addition to the majority of the IMAX screens again.

It was able to stay at/above 50% versus last Saturday after noon which was my goal for it, so I'd expect that number to drop by 20% or so to give it a ~+30% increase over last Saturday.

Yeah, that's what I meant, the total seats as in the projected amount of seats mimorin calculated it has for the day. That's why the % are all messed up. It having 50k less seats than last saturday while getting its screens back, and the whole top 10 having 600k less seats overall is simply impossible.

The constant switching from 50% to 100% at Toho Cinemas throws it off sometimes. Last Friday was 100% for example due to the holiday weekend, but they were back to 50% again this Friday. My guess is that this threw it off when it calculated the seats for Saturday, and Sunday, too.

No point in comparing with last Saturday. 14th Nov is best Comp. Its currently -36% 14th Nov at same time, if continues at that, will reach around 290k.
