Someone on BOT said they think the spread of Coronavirus is going to start impacting box office in Japan.

Has there been any news about it spreading at a quicker rate in Japan now?

So far, it hasn't had a noticeable impact on the box-office--it's been behaving normally. And there have been no reports of any theaters closing or distributors delaying films. Not to say it won't have an impact at some point if the infected list spikes, but so far, so good.

And I haven't read any particularly concerning news. 737 cases have now been reported, but 621 of those were aboard the Diamond Princess, so not many cases outside of those. Many of the reported individuals who are or were infected, including a child under 10-years-old reported on Friday, are recovering successfully and/or have been discharged.

I really don't think this is going to affect Japan as much as most other countries due to how health conscious Japan is as a society. The Japanese already avoid any potentially sick people like the plague. As long as they continue their mass mask-wearing, rigorous hand-washing, and introverted ways, and the confirmed cases are handled appropriately, this shouldn't get out of hand.

(Abe not implementing a blanket ban on Chinese tourists to appease Xi Jinping is questionable though).

Nothing too different from the Weekend Forecast, great hold for Parasite after its 197% increase last weekend though, so I'm not going to post an analysis until tomorrow. However, I did forgot to include Charlie's Angels in the forecast, so I'll talk about it for a moment. I honestly didn't see it when looking at Friday's results and Saturday's pre-sales.

What an epic bomb! It's definitely among the biggest bombs of all-time.

The early 2000s Charlie's Angels films were actually decent hits in Japan, and Sony certainly hoped to bank on some of that success with a significantly wide release (it's the third widest film in release this weekend) for this new film, but... its opening weekend came in 91% below Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. 91%. It only sold 6.8% of its available tickets over the weekend. Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna is playing at 84% fewer locations with 82% fewer showtimes and likely beat it over the weekend. :|

Sunday was the birthday of the new Emperor (the birthday of the sitting Emperor is a national holiday), so Monday was also a holiday as a result since Emperor's Day fell on a Sunday. In Japan, when a holiday falls on a Sunday, the next Monday is also a holiday.

So, no Weekend Actuals until tomorrow. However, I'll post Monday's estimates later tonight since it was a pretty big day.

NOTE: Cumulative Totals are as of Monday, February 24th.

>Parasite reigns atop the weekend box-office in its seventh week of its release, earning its second consecutive weekend at #1. This is actually its biggest drop to date, however, it's still very good and it's coming off of a prior weekend increase of 197%. Not to mention its seventh weekend is its second biggest weekend. It sold a further 204,000 admissions over the weekend frame, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 2.42 million. The breakout Korean smash also became the highest grossing South Korean film in Japan, surpassing 2005's A Moment to Remember.

A total north of ¥4 billion ($35 million+) is locked up now, so the new goal has become a likely total between ¥4.5-5.0 billion ($40-45 million).

>Stolen Identity 2 settled for second place, selling 143,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 323 screens; it sold 268,795 admissions over its first four-days in release (including Monday). This debut is 16% below the opening weekend of its predecessor, which is a fair decline, but it's also a stronger result than where it seemed headed (30% drop-off) going into the weekend. Expect a total around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

>Howling Village held well once again, selling an additional 83,000 admissions in its third weekend of release, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 675,009. The numbers here aren't much to talk about on their own, but they're good for a Toei live-action release playing on just over 200 screens, especially this time of year. It's going to exceed the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) milestone pretty easily, and probably finish around ¥1.1/1.2 billion ($10/11 million).

>Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna earned the biggest opening weekend for a modern Digimon film, besting the debuts of all six Digimon Adventure tri films. The weekend figure itself is an updated estimate, but its four-day total is an actual, where it sold 78,437 admissions on only 48 screens--a pretty impressive result.

>Charlie's Angels was a massive bomb for Sony. Sony gave it a traditional wide release, and it was the third widest release this weekend, but as you can see, it was all for naught and certainly cost them a lot of money. It only sold 76,628 admissions over its first four days of release across 306 screens. Epic flop.

>Bombshell and Midsommer were both small release from independent distributors and performed about as well as expected. Midsommer sold 77,125 admissions over its first four days in release on 106 screens, while Bombshell sold 75,278 on 200 screens.

I see some news sites are now speculating that the Olympics may be cancelled if the coronavirus situation worsens. Also been reading rumors that the biggest entertainment resort (Tokyo Disney) in the country could be facing closure as well. I really hope all this is just overreaction from the media.

At the moment, it's just panic reactions. Some music, sporting and entertainment events (and large scale conventions that attract hundreds of thousands) and such have been cancelled/postponed (most until March 15th), as they should, but the media itself is really overreacting right now.

I see so many English news articles with headlines like "scores of Japanese (picturing students, office workers, etc.) seen wearing masks." Well, yeah, they've been doing so forever. The Japanese have always been very cautious when going out in crowds, with those wearing masks already typically outnumbering those without in busy/crowded areas. These health procedures, mask-wearing and robust hand-washing, have already been daily routine.

Tokyo Disney Resort isn't being closed, at least not in the near future. I'm guessing rumors are circulating because they put out a basic practice notice (wash and sanitize your hands, don't come to the park if ill, etc.) this week for their guests.

And a "Tokyo Olympics Cancelled?" headline will obviously being in traffic to any news outlet.

I agree that this seems to be media hype. The box office of Japan is sort of a big indicator that there isn't much concern in the community. Theaters are possibly the first thing that's closed or admissions decline due to fear and panic among general crowd.

High box office revenue also means high risk of infection, Cinema theatre seems to be a perfect place for virus spreading due to cool temperature and close space.
But of course I don't think Olympic will be canceled or postponed, not because the virus will be handled in the near future, but because people will be tired of virus news and just don't care anymore, or some event that is worse than virus happen (war, earthquake, heat wave, terrorism, etc.)

80%+ of the box-office revenue comes out of the just the three central regions of Japan: Kanto (7 prefectures), Kansai (7 prefectures) and Chubu (9 prefectures). These three regions are roughly 35% the size of Japan's entire area, but they represent about 70% (or ~87 million people) of the country's population, and are thus very, very crowded.

Combined, these three regions are much smaller than the state of California and about the size of Greece, but with more than double the population of California (and 8x the pop. of Greece), and with more people than all of Germany, United Kingdom, France or Italy.

So those regions and prefectures will be the ones to watch if the virus does become a problem, as it'd not just cripple the box-office, but the entire country and have a major impact internationally.

Looking at the daily increases in case numbers, Japan seems to handling the coronavirus moderately well for now. It hasn't gotten to the rapid transmission levels like China and South Korea or even Italy.

So far, so "good." Fingers crossed. Unless some big mistake is made, and I say this cautiously, then Japan should be able to handle this.

The majority of cases in the past week came from Hokkaido, the second least populated (just over 5 million people) and most northern region (thus coldest), which has become the most infected prefecture now with 35. Most cases have been linked to schools, so the prefecture is seeking to close all public and junior high schools up there until Spring.

The government is also looking to approve the usage of the Fujifilm anti-flu drug "Avigan" to treat those infected with the virus, after test dosages proved effective in a couple mild cases.

Yes, some big announcements today. The virus hasn't spiked or anything, just cautious measures being taken. And no theaters have announced closure yet.

Smart to delay Doraemon. It always opens the first weekend of March every year, but that falls within the sensitive window to keep the virus in check, so understandable that they'd want to delay its release since it's an event film and will attract 3-4 million people throughout March. The box-office will be a little dull for awhile since Doraemon always livens things up every March and is often a yearly top 10 contender, but no need to risk things at this stage.

I imagine Toho will go with a July release now. Toho already has Detective Conan and Crayon Shin-chan in April, and May & June aren't good months for young/family films like Doraemon, so July (or even August) is the best bet.

And also smart to close public schools until Spring. The start of the school year is in April in Japan, so it lines up well too. Most of the recent cases have been linked to schools, so no reason to take any chances when things have been going relatively smoothly.

Tokyo Disney Resort closing from February 29 until March 15. I wonder if movie theaters are next.

Tokyo Disney Resort will be closing after all, beginning from Feb. 29th to March 15th.

It's certainly good news that a lot of these preventative measures are being taken in the final weeks of winter now to help prevent the virus from spreading. So far, there's still no rapid growth, with reported cases remaining pretty stable day-by-day, but certainly no reason to suddenly become lax in these next few critical weeks.

Still no theaters announcing closure. But it's also important to remember that while a theater can certainly attract hundreds of people, Japan, despite having the third biggest box-office, isn't a big movie-going country (the average person only attends one or two films every year). If any theater do close, assuming the virus doesn't see a rapid increase, I imagine they'll be up north in Hokkaido which would have hardly a noticeable impact on the box-office at all (it's 5% or less of the market).

And as for the box-office as a whole, I'm not seeing any big impact on it yet. The weekday numbers this week have been relatively normal, though perhaps trending slightly below average in recent days. If I had to say how much below average it's become, I'd say just 5-10% lower. Let's see how the weekend plays out.

Besides Tokyo Disney Resort, Universal Studios Japan is another major tourist destination in Japan attracting almost 15 million guests per year. I imagine there will be pressure on them to close as well in the face of this decision.

Has it happened before in Japan that all schools were closed at the same time nationwide in at least 2 weeks?

Not to my knowledge. The most recent example of large-scale school closings was following the Great Tohoku Earthquake (the fourth biggest earthquake in record history) in 2011 for a few days/a week. The box-office greatly suffered for a couple of weeks following it as well, due to around a third of theaters closing.

But closing all public schools for a few weeks is a great decision, even if it's at the inconvenience of a lot of parents due to the sudden announcement. It's critical to keep the virus from spreading over the next two or three weeks, so it's a reasonable and smart decision.

And I don't want to speak too soon, but things are looking good as only 9 cases were reported on Saturday, the lowest number in two weeks and the second straight day to hopefully begin a downward trend. And in Hokkaido, where the virus saw a spike last week to become the most infected region, only reported 4 cases as well, continuing its downward trend.

All theaters remained open over the weekend. Saturday's admissions were solid, maybe being around 10-15% lower than expected, but Sunday is also the 1st of the month (national discount day), so the day before tends to be deflated as people wait to for the cheaper ticket prices. If Sunday delivers like usual, especially since it's the 1st, then the virus still won't be having much of an impact on the box-office at this time.

Doraemon being delayed will obviously make March much weaker than it usually is, but again, it was a good decision to move it given it's the first event film of the year. It's just going to provide a big boost to the month it's moved to now.
