Since Sunday was a Toho Cinemas Day (40% off tickets), the actual weekend drops will be slightly worse than those above. You can add up to 5% or so to the declines for most films. However, films that skew younger won't be affected as much, while films skewing toward an adult/senior audience or those with premium format showings will see the difference.

I don't have time to post Weekend Estimates this today due Valentine's Day plans.

>The Martian retains its position atop the box office, dropping sub-20% in weekend gross and just 16% in weekend admissions, selling 277,427 tickets in its second weekend. Don't look for this one to relinquish its hold on the #1 spot until March.

After two weeks in release, Ridley Scott's latest has exceeded the 1 million admissions mark, selling 1,012,884 admissions after ten days in release. Strong legs, given the reception and poor competition this month, were very likely, but now they're pretty much assured after its second week figures.

The Martian will exceed the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) hit milestone and 2 million admissions quite effortlessly, and expect it to finish closer to ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+) with 2.2/2.3 million admissions.

>Nobunaga Concerto continues to hold strong in second place, down less than 30% in its fourth weekend, selling a further 221,760 tickets over the weekend.

And after four weeks in release, the live-action adaptation of the historical time-travel manga has already broke through the ¥3 billion hit milestone, and has exceeded 2.5 million admissions. If its chances of reaching the ¥4 billion mark was in question, it's probably not anymore.

Nobunaga Concerto is very likely to exceed ¥4 billion ($35 million) now, and is on course to reach 3.2/3.3 million admissions. It's pretty rare for a January release to be having this type of box-office performance.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens rises one spot and is back in the top 3 for its ninth weekend in release. After 59 days in release, it has almost reached 7 million admissions, and has broke into the Top 25 (#24) highest-grossing films of all-time.

>Born in the EXILE, a documentary highlighting the J Soul Brothers from the popular band, comes in fifth place in its debut weekend.

Only playing on 150 screens, it sold a solid 76,114 admissions over the weekend frame. More impressive, however, is that since opening on Friday, it's earned nearly ¥200 million with 144,000 admissions after three days. That means Friday represented a staggering 49% of the film's three day total, so I don't expect this one to stick around for long.

>Carol was the only wide opener, among many, to make the top 10.

Todd Haynes's critically-acclaimed picture, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, sold 19,281 admissions over the weekend frame on just 58 screens. And since opening on fewer screens last Thursday, before expanding the next day (Friday), it's sold 41,072 admissions after four days in release.

Outside the Top 10, Selector Destructed WIXOSS: The Movie managed a 12th place start, while Steve Jobs came in 13th place (selling 23,467 admissions since opening on Friday) - both in limited release.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will overtake Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End before the upcoming weekend (probably today, Wednesday) and Finding Nemo over the upcoming weekend, to become the third highest-grossing Disney film in Japan (and nineteenth overall). It might have enough momentum to reach Alice in Wonderland and claim the number two position, but it's improbable (or an impossible thing, if you'd ask Alice).

Disney has been on a tremendous winning streak in Japan in recent years, and it'll continue this year with Alice Through the Looking Glass (July 1st), launching the Summer box office season, and Finding Dory (July 16th) doing blockbuster numbers, then there's The Jungle Book (mid-August) which could be a dark horse.

Rogue One is scheduled for early 2017, and Moana for March 11th, 2017.

¥33,478,200 ($296,000).

It actually made the Top 10 last weekend (8th) in terms of gross (12th in admissions), but its weekend figure came in later.

I'll post the Saturday admissions from the Usual Locations in an hour or so.

I've been pretty busy the past several days, so I haven't been able to post any updates. The only talking points this month will primarily be about the holdovers, though, as February is generally a dumping ground (especially this year).

So there hasn't been much happening that I haven't gotten around to, at least.

Not much to talk about this weekend. All the holdovers continue to post excellent holds given the lack of competition this month.

>The Martian and Nobunaga Concerto remain supreme once again, and are setting the bar quite high for other live-action films this year to reach (both are potential yearly Top 10 contenders). They're two significant success stories for the year, especially for this time of year.

>Point Break is actually doing nicely and if Sunday is healthy, it should debut above the ¥100 million (~$900,000) mark. I would have expected this one to bomb (or at least disappoint).

>Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is performing pretty well, though I don't expect to see it in the Top 5 for the weekend. 74% of its theater count is accounted for above, so it won't be adding much outside of the usual locations. However, a sixth (seventh if Sunday is weak) place debut as barely a wide release (105 screens) is quite impressive and confirms the show's popularity in Japan.

>Girls und Panzer added some 4DX theaters/showings this weekend, so it's in store for a massive increase. It might not rise back into the Top 10 in terms of admissions but I'm sure its avg. ticket price is going to be incredibly high. I expect to see it back in the Top 10 in its fourteenth week in release.

10 - Saving Private Ryan [Sept. 26-27 to Nov. 28-29] (1998)
10+

It also has a good chance of being in the Top 5 next weekend, too, so an 11-consecutive week in the Top 5 is possible.

Then it'll be targeting the list below once it reaches its twelfth weekend. I'm predicting 13-consecutive weeks in the Top 10 at the moment. Mid-March is very crowded, so it probably won't have much staying power at that point.

Most-Consecutive Weeks in the Top 10 [1998-]
26 - Spirited Away [July 21-22 to Jan. 12-13] (2001-2002)

19 - Frozen [Mar. 15-16 to July 19-20] (2014)
18 - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace [July 10-11 to Nov. 06-07] (1999)
18 - Bayside Shakedown [Oct. 31-Nov.1 to Feb. 27-28] (1998-1999)

Sunday's admissions made the weekend holds come back down to earth a bit, but they're likely to improve slightly in terms of gross since last Sunday was a Toho Cinemas Day. Expect up to a 5% improvement for more adult oriented films, while more kid/family friendly films shouldn't change much.

I'll post Weekend Estimates later.

06 (05) ¥67,000,000 ($590,000), -34%, ¥350,000,000 ($3.2 million), Born in the EXILE (Toho Video Division) WK2
07 (--) ¥60,000,000 ($530,000), 0, ¥80,000,000 ($710,000), Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (Kadokawa) NEW
08 (16) ¥51,000,000 ($450,000), +630%, ¥1,180,000,000 ($10.1 million), Girls und Panzer: The Movie (Showgate) WK14
09 (05) ¥27,000,000 ($240,000), -33%, ¥440,000,000 ($3.8 million), The Inerasable (Shochiku) WK4
10 (07) ¥24,000,000 ($215,000), -20%, ¥5,390,000,000 ($45.5 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories (Toho) WK10

>The Martian once again retains its position atop the box office, and should do so for almost two more weeks. It has easily exceeded ¥2 billion after three weeks, and has plenty left to also exceed the ¥3 billion hit milestone as it'll probably reach nearly ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+). Japan is in contention to become its second best international market, after China, if it can survive the crowded March schedule.

>Nobunaga Concerto is also holding strong, and after its fifth week in release has exceeded ¥3.5 billion. Rather than crawl to the ¥4 billion milestone, it's going to effortlessly exceed the mark and might even come closer to ¥4.5 billion (~$40 million) with 3.5 million admissions.

This one is sure setting the bar high for other live-action films this year to reach. There could always be a surprise performance, but I only see three live-action films that are likely to outgross Nobunaga Concerto on the 2016 schedule.

>Point Break, even if it had a mediocre start based on estimates, probably exceeded most expectations. No big names, unknown director, poor reviews... it's quite surprising that it managed a debut above ¥100 million. I can only guess that it was marketed as a remake of the 1991 film which starred Keanu Reeves to draw in moviegoers.

>Sherlock: The Abominable Bride enjoyed a healthy debut, especially given its barely wide theater count (105 locations). Like all limited or barely wide releases, actuals can differ greatly from estimates, but this will still be viewed as a successful opening.

>Girls und Panzer: The Movie doubled its theater count due to adding 4DX locations and experienced a massive increase as a result, rising back into the Top 10 in its fourteenth week of release. Its weekend estimate above is very much an estimate (it could be much higher), considering the screen count and just how much those 4DX locations will boost its already high avg. ticket price. This film has been a tremendous success for independent distributor Showgate.

>Classmates may have cracked the Top 10. Its estimated admissions are high enough (a little shy of 20,000), but determining its avg. ticket price is difficult.

>The Martian easily retains its #1 position again this weekend, giving Ridely Scott's latest a third-consecutive week atop the box office charts. Over its third weekend, the space-drama sold 190,575 tickets, bringing its overall admissions above 1.5 million after three weeks in release.

It'll continue to play well for a few more weeks (and is likely to remain atop the box office again next week), but the upcoming March competition is quite strong, so its late-legs may falter a bit.

Updated Projected Finish: ¥3.6 billion ($32 million) / 2.4 million admissions.

>Nobunaga Concerto continues to hold steady in second place, and also remains above ¥200 million in its fifth weekend in release by selling a further 156,083 tickets.

Toho's live-action adaptation of the time-travel tale continues to add to its very impressive results thus far, and is well on its way to exceeding ¥4 billion without too much effort. After five weeks in release, it has now sold over 2.8 million admissions.

Updated Projected Finish: ¥4.4 billion ($38 million) / 3.4 million admissions. *Top 10 Film of 2016 Contender*

>Point Break is off to a surprisingly decent start, opening in third place in its debut weekend.

Warner Bros.'s remake of the 1991 film (starring Keanu Reeves) sold a sold 107,058 admissions across 538 screens, delivering quite the unexpected debut. The original film wasn't a big success a the box office, but it must still be somewhat relevant among some Japanese moviegoers for a remake with no recognizable names attached to do this "well".

Projected Finish: ¥800 million ($7 million) / 600,000 admissions.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains in the Top 5 for its tenth-consecutive weekend, and exceeded the ¥11 billion mark with over 7 million admissions in the process.

The seventh chapter in the Star Wars saga was the first live-action film since 2010's Alice in Wonderland to exceed the ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster mark, and it's also the first live-action film since, again, 2010's Alice in Wonderland to exceed the ¥11 billion milestone as well as to reach 7 million+ admissions.

Updated Projected Total: ¥11.6 billion ($96 million) / 7.4 million admissions. *#19 Highest-Grossing Film of All-Time*

>Sherlock: The Abominable Bride comes in seventh place, and a pretty respectful ranking for the BBC drama film it was. Playing on 105 screens (just enough to be labeled a wide release), it sold 48,484 admissions in its debut weekend.

The drama is quite popular in Japan, and the results of this debut is clear evidence of that. It can be difficult to predict a film like this one, but it's probably going to enjoy a healthy run in the market.

Projected Finish: ¥400 million ($3.5 million) / 300,000 admissions.

>Classmates managed to make the Top 10, and did so on only 30 screens. Aniplex's release of the anime film sold 23,395 admissions over the weekend, and achieved a 2-day PSA of $10,156 (780 people per theater). Not bad, not bad at all.

Projected Finish: ¥200 million ($1.8 million) / 125,000 admissions.

A few new wide releases attempt to dethrone The Martian from atop the box office charts, and all of them are likely to fail.

>The Finest Hours is receiving a fairly significant release, and even if it's largely due to the state of the market currently, it's impressive nonetheless. I doubt the surprisingly high number of theaters/showings will translate to higher box office receipts, but it may be in store for a respectable debut.

>The Black Devil and the White Prince is possibly going to win Saturday, maybe even the overall weekend, in terms of admissions due to its numerous stage greetings. However, 86% of its theater count is represented above, so it's very unlikely to win the actual weekend unless it absolutely kills it at the usual locations.

So besides those two aiming, and likely failing, to knock The Martian off its perch; the other interesting matter to watch this weekend is whether Star Wars: The Force Awakens can remain in the Top 5 for an eleventh-consecutive weekend. The odds are, I believe, not in its favor, though it's possible and will come down to how much Point Break drops in its second weekend.

>The Martian is looking at a fourth-consecutive week atop the box office. Even if February has offered little competition to challenge its reign at #1, it's still quite the achievement if it pulls it off.

>The Finest Hours has so-so pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, and it's already trailing The Martian for the day, so it's unlikely to debut at #1. It still appears to be a safe ¥100 million+ opener, though, and might come in closer to ¥150 million. If it opens closer to the latter figure than the former, I'd consider the debut somewhat successful.

>The Black Devil and the White Prince has a huge pre-sale advantage over everything due to its stage greeting showings, and is the only film with potential of knocking off The Martian this weekend. However, it's relying very heavily on the stage greeting showings (the others are very, very weak) and it's only playing on 160 screens, so it's still unlikely to be a true contender for the #1 spot.

>Born in the EXILE more than doubled its pre-sales today versus last Saturday (probably some band greetings going on) so even if it experiences a sharp decline on Sunday, it's very likely going to have a weekend increase (just how much is the question). Any % increase will rule out any chance of Star Wars: The Force Awakening remaining in the Top 5 for an eleventh-consecutive weekend.

>The Hateful Eight has begun the day quite well and I believe it's going to crack the Top 10. It's barely a wide release, playing on 119 screens, but so far it has a comfortable lead over Sherlock's second frame (which will place 10th if Tarantino's latest would miss).

>While the Women are Sleeping is a huge bomb and isn't likely to make the Top 10 despite playing on 202 screens.
