Interesting, the Japanese site has a Batman Ninja poster too. http://wwws.warnerbros.co.jp/batman-ninja/

When I first heard of the project, I also thought "that should be Ninja Batman, shouldn't it?". I'm only pressing this because I also thought the same before.

How many screens is the latest Godzilla anime playing on? Is it another smaller release due to the inevitable Netflix debut in a couple months?

159. Still a small release, but it is at least wide. I don't remember the exact count of the first film without checking, but I believe the second film is receiving a slightly wider release.

The official title of the film is Batman Ninja. It's just read as Ninja Batman in Japanese. The poster you linked has it as Ninja Batman below the Batman signal and above the release date.

Corpse, do you have any updates on Coco? I thought it would be interesting to track its progress to ¥5 billion (if it does manage to reach it).

Today I'm very upset that I encounter a person that insist on using Japan Box Office data from 'BoxOfficeMojo' to measure all-time gross in Japan thus making Frozen no.1 movie of all time there. It's so wrong I don't even know how to begin with. Guess I've to 'Let it Go'.

But isn't Frozen number 1 in terms of dollar amount, no matter which site is used?

In terms of USD, Frozen is considered the highest-grossing film in Japan (by about $600,000). So, if someone is making this claim, consider it true. However, if they're saying it's #1 in JPY and/or admissions as well, consider it false. In terms of JPY, it ranks third all-time; and in terms of admissions, it ranks second all-time.

I'm actually been updating the Top 100 Highest-Grossing Films since I haven't done so since July 2017, and I'll be posting it below this post if anyone needs it as a reference.

I love looking over these lists. It's amazing that Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines almost grossed $70m, and Infinity War won't even crack $40m. Even Cliffhanger out-grossed it.

Mostly from myself, but some are official studio figures.

BOM is the only source that tracks the Japanese box-office in terms of USD, and they tend to be a little unreliable since they don't adjust for weekly exchange rate fluctuations which can greatly alter the totals for films that enjoy several months on the charts. They also don't track most films that fall out of the Top 10 for very long, so a lot of totals BOM has for films in Japan are low as a result. I've gone back to adjust pretty much everything within the Top 150 (maybe 200 now) highest-grossing films in the market on any chart I post here.

I record the exchange rate every day, and I'm able to track films for several weeks once they're out of the Top 10 (or even Top 20/25). And by the time tracking ends for a film in the market, it's usually earned ~98.8% of its final total, which is eventually released for every film that earned over ¥1 billion (~$10 million) by Eiren (Motion Picture Association of Japan) that includes around 60 or so films a year.

I'm confident in saying that all of my USD figures are 99+% accurate. However, there can still be some error in recording USD figures (particularly for older films), which is why I never bold USD totals on anything (just JPY).

The #1 spot is very contested between Peter Rabbit, attempting to debut on top, and Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, looking to win a fifth weekend on top in its sixth week of release. In terms of admissions, they may only be a couple thousand apart, or less, so it's going to come down to which film has the higher average ticket price.

For now, I'm leaning toward Detective Conan defending its hold atop the box-office once again since I'm doubting Peter Rabbit was able to skew old enough to drive its avg. ticket price up enough to take it... Sony also has it $100,000 lower than I do, so that's not a positive sign either.

Rampage disappointed, nearly bombing, as expected based on its pre-sales.

Avengers: Infinity War held well enough, and only has The Avengers left to surpass to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film in the market, which it should be able to do.

Notormi Samurai performed quite a bit better than its pre-sales suggested, and should have comfortably cleared ¥100 million to earn a Top 5 debut (and probably fourth in admissions).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (05/19-20)
If Japan still used the Distributor's Income system for box office and also I think you would not want to make a list I will ask about what would top three animated films at the Japanese box office: Spirited Away, Frozen, and Your Name what would their Distributor's Income be if it was still in effect?

Corpse, do you have any updates on Coco? I thought it would be interesting to track its progress to ¥5 billion (if it does manage to reach it).

I have it around ¥28 million ($250,000) this weekend (12th place), and just shy of ¥4.9 billion with ¥4.89 billion ($45.7 million).

It'll be a slow crawl, may even take until early July, but it'll likely just make it to ¥5 billion.

Are you asking if their rankings on the all-time charts would change if Japan still used Distributor Income versus Gross Revenue, or simply what their distributor income would be?

Basically what their distributor income would be?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (05/19-20)
The distributor income can vary a little, but it typically fell between 55-60% of a film's total gross. So, using the average (57.5%) and assuming that distributor income percentage hasn't changed much since 1999 (I really don't know), here are the rough estimates:

~¥17.71 billion (~$144 million) - Spirited Away
~¥14.65 billion (~$144 million) - Frozen
~¥14.39 billion (~$136 million) - Your Name.

If there are any other films you'd like an estimated distributor income for, just let me know.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer achieved yet another weekend at #1, its fifth overall (sixth in admissions), selling a further 161,000 admissions. The twenty-second film in the long-running series has become the highest-grossing film in the long-running franchise. It has now exceed 5.5 million admissions after six-weeks in release, and is aiming for a total near ¥8 billion ($75 million) and 6 million+ admissions. Also, this marks the sixth-consecutive year that Detective Conan has broken its franchise record -- an incredibly impressive achievement.

>Peter Rabbit ended up settling for a second place start, but honestly, the opening is pretty solid considering films like this tend to disappoint, and Sony has been experiencing a rough streak over the past few years. The film sold 144,965 admissions over the weekend across 463 screens, and 178,465 admissions since opening on Friday. It's not guaranteed, but it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Rampage disappointed, nearly bombing, as expected, selling 95,947 admissions over the weekend frame across 654 screens, and 123,580 admissions since opening on Friday.

>Avengers: Infinity War held well enough, and only has The Avengers left to surpass to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film in the market, which it should be able to do.

>Notormi Samurai rounded out the Top 5 in its debut, and managed to sell a decent 101,212 admissions over the weekend on 327 screens. Overall, this is certainly a mediocre start given Hiroshi Abe is usually a more reliable draw, but it outperformed what pre-sales were suggesting so maybe it can achieve good legs.

>Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle misses the Top 5 and opens below the first film, but no weekend figures have been released for it yet. When the numbers are released, I'll update this post.
