Weekend Forecast (02/07-08)

01 (01) ¥206 million ($1.7 million), -33%, ¥7.95 billion ($67.9 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 8
02 (--) ¥170 million ($1.4 million), 0, ¥170 million ($1.4 million), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) NEW
03 (--) ¥130 million ($1.1 million), 0, ¥160 million ($1.3 million), Mortdecai (Kadokawa) NEW
04 (02) ¥126 million ($1.1 million), -39%, ¥530 million ($4.5 million), Joker Game (Toho) Week 2
05 (--) ¥110 million ($940,000), 0, ¥110 million ($940,000), Mr Children [Reflection] (Nikkatsu) NEW
06 (04) ¥106 million ($905,000), -42%, ¥950 million ($8.2 million), Annie (Sony) Week 3
07 (03) ¥102 million ($870,000), -45%, ¥480 million ($4.1 million), Exodus: Gods and Kings (Fox) Week 2
08 (05) ¥98 million ($840,000), -34%, ¥7.39 billion ($63.1 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 8
09 (06) ¥73 million ($625,000), -38%, ¥320 million ($2.7 million), Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 2
10 (07) ¥32 million ($270,000), -43%, ¥930 million ($8.0 million), ST: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 5

>Big Hero 6 is likely to win a 6th-consecutive week atop the box-office, and will come very close to exceeding ¥8 billion ($68 million) on Sunday.

>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be the top debut this weekend, but it's not likely to challenge the #1 spot. Paramount has done an effective job at marketing the film, with even Megan Fox being there promoting it this past week, so it should post a respectable opening.

>Mortdecai should do alright in Japan, comparatively speaking, since Johnny Depp remains a big name (Japan continues to be his best/second best international market), but his star power is certainly dwindling with his recent releases. It's time for another Pirates/Alice.

>I'm not sure how to predict Mr. Children [Reflection], so I'm taking a guess here. Toho Cinemas gave it a very wide release, but the other chains didn't. And it's playing on just 95 screens, technically a limited release, making it more difficult to predict. I think it has potential to hit the Top 5, but it could easily land as low as 9th over the weekend (several films look to gross in the ¥100 million range this weekend).

Pretty good for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It could exceed ¥200 million ($1.7/1.8 million) this weekend. It was able to maintain, and improve upon, its lead over Big Hero 6 into the evening/night.

If it can make the race between itself and Big Hero 6 close on Sunday (Big Hero 6 plays very well on Sundays), it might have an outside shot of debuting at #1, though it'll still be an uphill challenge.

Also, not too bad for Mortdecai. It might open close to ¥150 million ($1.3 million) or so over the weekend with this Saturday figure, which could result in its final total in Japan challenging its final gross in the US.

Overall, looks to be a good Saturday all-around, but with last Sunday being greatly inflated from being the 1st (discount day), tomorrow's numbers will likely be quite harsh compared to last Sunday.

The Japanese poster for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is ruined by the red kapow mark and the yellow text inside. It's not a great poster by any means, but that part sticks out like a sore thumb. I guess that's what they wanted. Does that text have any importance?

It's there for just the "cool" factor to attract younger audiences (by younger, that means 20/30-year-olds in Japan). Kinda reminds me of a Kamen Rider film (think Power Rangers) poster.

Usual Locations Weekend Admissions (~40/45% of Market)

69,405 (--), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) NEW
63,446 (-37%), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 8
49,049 (--), Mortdecai (Kadokawa) NEW
33,023 (-51%), Annie (Sony) Week 3
30,841 (--), Mr. Children [Reflection] (Nikkatsu) NEW
30,640 (-59%), Joker Game (Toho) Week 2
24,964 (-57%), Exodus: Gods and Kings (Fox) Week 2
22,948 (-47%), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 8
21,325 (-48%), Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 2
9,024 (-50%), Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Ars Nova DC (Showgate) Week 2
8,423 (-40%), Midnight Restaurant (Toei) Week 2
7,848 (-72%), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 5
7,818 (-62%), ST: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 5
4,222

As expected, Sunday was much, much lower than last week, which resulted in some harsh weekend drops after last weekend's very strong holds. However, this weekend's drops shouldn't be quite as bad as those above. Last Sunday being a discount day greatly reduced the avg. ticket price for everything, so most films should improve a bit (5/10%) upon their admissions decrease here with their gross figures.

>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Big Hero 6 are in a close race for the #1 spot. Big Hero 6 beat the Ninja Turtles on Sunday, but not by very much since the latter managed an increase, too.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should have a higher avg. ticket price than Big Hero 6, so I'm thinking it managed to finally dethrone Baymax and co. and debut at #1. In admissions, they look to be maybe 10,000 or less apart based one incoming estimates.

>Mortdecai hasn't shown any sign of being disliked or frontloaded so far, and managed a slight increase on Sunday of its own. I'm thinking Japan could end up as its best overall market, ahead of the US's take, especially since it won't even gross $8 million in the US now.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates shortly.

12 (08) ¥20 million ($170,000), -64%, ¥740 million ($6.3 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 5

Unless the unreported chains strongly favored Big Hero 6, then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has finally dethroned it.

>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is estimated to have comfortably exceeded ¥200 million, which is higher than a lot of expectations. Paramount has managed to produce several unlikely hits over the past couple years, and this is yet another recent success story for them.

>Mortdecai also has a good debut, up 25/30% over last year's Transcendence based on estimates. If the number holds up, then it should be on track for ¥800 million ($7 million) or so, which puts it range to overtake its gross from the US in Japan. Japan continues to be a Johnny Depp stronghold.

>Mr. Children is a very rough estimate that's likely to change a lot tomorrow.

Weekend Ranking (02/07-08)

Image

01 (--) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) DEBUT
02 (01) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 8
03 (--) Mortdecai (Kadokawa) DEBUT
04 (04) Annie (Sony) Week 3
05 (02) Joker Game (Toho) Week 2
06 (05) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 8
07 (03) Exodus: Gods and Kings (Fox) Week 2
08 (06) Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 2
09 (--) Mr. Children [Reflection] (Nikkatsu) DEBUT
10 (09) Midnight Restaurant (Toei) Week 2

>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dethrones Big Hero 6's long run at #1 (although, it ranked 2nd in admissions).

Playing on 649 screens, the Ninja Turtles earned a solid ¥259,314,200 ($2.2 million) with 168,577 admissions. The debut in terms of admissions is just "okay", but the debut in gross is quite impressive, honestly. It's significantly higher than about anyone was expecting, and it's thanks to a very high avg. ticket price of ¥1,538. It's been over a year that a regular film release, 3D or not, has had an avg. ticket price that high.

And with this nice start, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could gross near ¥1.5 billion ($12/13 million). Not a bad start for Paramount this year.

>Big Hero 6 finally falls out of 1st place (though it ranked 1st in admissions), but still took in a strong ¥227,064,700 ($1.9 million) with 172,040 admissions in its 8th weekend of release. And after 8 weeks, it has earned ¥7.97 billion ($67.9 million) and over 6.2 million admissions to date.

>Mortdecai saw another successful debut for Johnny Depp in Japan, grossing ¥144,441,700 ($1.2 million) with 109,854 admissions on 638 screens. This opening is strong enough to potentially put Japan's final total for the film above the US's final gross.

>Mr. Children [Reflection] debuts in the Top 10, playing on just 95 screens. However, no figures have been released for the film yet
.

Upcoming Weekend Releases [Theater Counts]

WIDE RELEASES
02/13, [324] - Fifty Shades of Grey (Toho-Towa)
02/13, [164] - Moomins on the Riviera (Phantom Film)
02/14, [199] - A Man's Life (Showgate)
02/14, [184] - The Mourner (Toei)
02/14, [160] - Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho)

LIMITED RELEASES [10-99 theaters]
02/14, [65] - La La La At Rock Bottom (Gaga)
02/14, [46] - Magical Dolphin (Elephant House)
02/14, [45] - Foxcatcher (Long Ride)
02/14, [31] - Little Forest (Shochiku)
02/14, [25] - Tom-Yum Goong 2 (Clock Works)
02/14, [10] - The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (Bitters End)

Very crowded weekend ahead, it's just too bad none of the openers will have much of an impact. I don't know why Toho didn't give Terrace House a wider release.

Fifty Shades of Grey is looking to disappoint in Japan. Its ticket sales so far today (Friday) is only suggesting, maybe, a ¥25 million ($200,000) opening day. If it doesn't see a spike in evening attendance, it'll be lucky to reach ¥100 million (less than $1 million) over the weekend frame (3rd/4th place debut).

I'm sure it'll play better in the evening, but it's already clear this one is going to bomb/be overlooked like every other global phenomenon book adaptations (Twilight/The Hunger Games) in the market. The early release date also doesn't help matters. Most imported films disappoint if they're released in Japan at the same time as the rest of the world, unless they have a significant established fanbase (Harry Potter, Pirates, Spider-Man).

It sold about 75% of the tickets Mortdecai did last Friday.

If it has a similar weekend pattern, it'll just break ¥100 million ($900,000-$1 million) over the weekend.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast
I didn't have time to put together a Weekend Forecast this week, so here are Saturday's results at the usual locations:

Usual Locations Saturday Admissions (40/45% of Market)

57,223 (--), Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho) NEW
23,560 (-31%), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) Week 2
22,628 (-13%), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 9
18,895 (--), Fifty Shades of Grey (Toho-Towa) NEW
17,940 (-24%), Mortdecai (Kadokawa) Week 2
17,147 (--), La La La At Rock Bottom (Gaga) NEW
12,814 (-17%), Annie (Sony) Week 4
11,480 (-34%), Mr. Children [Reflection] (Nikkatsu) Week 2
11,371 (-30%), Joker Game (Toho) Week 3
11,247 (--), The Mourner (Toei) NEW
9,597 (--), Moomins on the Riviera (Phantom Film) NEW

7,945 (-36%), Exodus: Gods and Kings (Fox) Week 3

Very, very good for Terrace House. Unfortunately, I think its performance at the usual locations is going to be misleading because Toho didn't go that wide with it. Most of its locations are accounted for here. It'll earn a #1 debut fairly easily, though, despite a lack of theaters. The low count makes it harder to project a weekend gross, but it should break, or come very close to ¥250 million ($2.2 million).

And here I thought none of the openers would have any impact this weekend.

Fifty Shades of Grey disappoints. It'll be aiming for ¥110-130 million (roughly $1 million) over the weekend. Although, its Sunday admissions are looking pretty bad right now (hasn't even broke the Top 10 as of 1PM...), so maybe it'll come in lower.

It wouldn't have done much better, but it would have benefited more from a delayed release in the Summer/Fall given its strong box-office results in the US and around the world that would have generated much needed awareness/interest in Japan. At least, that's the case for most films, but it didn't help any of the Twilight/Hunger Game films from bombing.

Since Japanese audiences have been ignoring a lot of imported releases for quite a few years now, most films (without a major, established fanbase) require a delayed release date and strong box-office results outside of Japan first to become successful in the market now.

12,098 (-47%), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 9
12,044 (--), A Man's Life (Showgate) NEW

Impressive for Terrace House. It had the most admissions for an opener at the usual locations since Yo-Kai Watch and Big Hero 6 were released in December.

Normally, 96,000 would be enough to suggest an opening weekend of 225-250,000 admissions and ¥300-325 million, but since it isn't playing as wide at other locations, it should come in lower. 200,000+ admissions looks good, though, and maybe it'll come in close to ¥300 million ($2.5 million+).

Big Hero 6 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are very close again this weekend. Last weekend, the Turtles debuted on top in gross, but Big Hero 6 pulled off the victory in admissions. I think that'll be the case again this weekend but for 2nd/3rd place behind Terrace House.

Fifty Shades of Grey will have to settle for a opening weekend in 4th/5th place, and possibly behind Mordecai's second weekend. Unless it has a very high avg. ticket price, it'll miss a debut of ¥100 million (less than $900,000). Quite disappointing.

And speaking of Mortdecai, it's making a serious run at overtaking its US total in Japan afterall.

Weekend Estimates will be posted shortly.

Weekend Ranking (02/14-15)

Image

01 (--) Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) Week 2
03 (02) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 9
04 (03) Mortdecai (Kadokawa) Week 2
05 (--) Fifty Shades of Grey (Toho-Towa) DEBUT
06 (04) Annie (Sony) Week 4
07 (05) Joker Game (Toho) Week 3
08 (--) The Mourner (Toei) DEBUT
09 (07) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 9
10 (--) La La La at Rock Bottom (Gaga) DEBUT

>Terrace House: Closing Door took the top spot, earning ¥251,132,500 ($2.1 million) with 189,897 admissions on 160 screens. This means that it sold 51% of tickets at the usual locations I report, which represent just over 40% of the market, making it the first time any wide release has outperformed the rest of the market at those locations since I've tracked them.

And it's quite an impressive opening, too. It's pretty uncommon for a film to open over ¥200 million on less than 200 screens, and Terrace House did so easily. Very, very few films ever expand beyond their initial release, but Toho might want to consider it with this one. Either way, it should be heading towards a solid ¥1.5 billion ($12/13 million) finish.

>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Big Hero 6 split rankings in gross vs. admissions again this weekend. Last weekend, the Turtles was ahead by gross, and Big Hero 6 in admissions, and the same happened again this weekend.

>Fifty Shades of Grey comes in below estimates, settling for 5th place, and it's largely due to the surprisingly low avg. ticket price.

The film adaptation of the global phenomenon (everywhere but Japan anyway), debuted to a poor ¥80,909,200 ($690,000) with 61,728 admissions on 324 screens. Obviously, this is very disappointing compared to how it performed everywhere else, but it opened almost on par with the Twilight and Hunger Games films, so it did okay, in my opinion, in the market. I figured it'd appeal almost elusively to adults, say 20-50 year-olds, but the ATP of ¥1,311 suggests its audience included a fair share of teens and/or seniors, too. The film only received a R-15 rating in Japan (meaning that 15 is the age restriction) versus an R-18 rating, so teenagers did have fair access to it.

>The Mourner got off to a rather slow start. Playing on 184 screens, it grossed ¥59,937,700 ($510,000) with 48,556 admissions. This has kind of become the norm for original live-action films released from Toei, so it's okay as far as comparisons go, but it serves as another reminder the struggle that original films continue to have in Japan.

>La La La at Rock Bottom rounds out the Top 10 debuts this weekend, and it made it on only 65 screens. No weekend figures have been reported for the film yet, however.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top Animated Films
>Big Hero 6 becomes the 13th animated feature to exceed ¥8 billion. It should also crack ¥9 billion, but reaching the Top 10 might be too much. It has had a spectacular performance.

>Yo-Kai Watch is only ¥50 million away from overtaking the first Pokemon movie. It actually passed it in admissions a couple weeks ago to become the most-attended TV anime film of all-time. The box-office was the last medium it had left to trump Pokemon in, and it's done so.

The anime and toys are to be localized and released in the West in 2016, and the video games are likely to follow.
