Around ¥5 billion ($45 million+). Running some numbers, I'm getting a finish right around Film Gold. But a lot depends, again, on how it behaves once we reach September. I don't really seeing it doing any less than ¥5 billion (or if it does, it'll be like ¥4.9 billion), but if it holds on well enough post-summer vacation, it could climb a little higher, perhaps around ¥5.5 billion ($52 million).

I don't know too much about Yaguchi Shinobu, but looking at this filmography, I'd probably consider him more of a niche directer as you suggested. Waterboys was very popular critically, receiving 8 Japan Academy Award Nominations (winning 2) in 2001, but it wasn't a notable success at the box-office.

I checked the Eiren numbers for 2001 and you're right: Waterboys didn't even break 1 billion that year. I always thought of it as his breakthrough film, along with introducing Tsumabuki Satoshi to a wider audience.

On the other hand, according to Eiren and Box Office Mojo, Swing Girls earned 2.15 billion yen and was ranked 22 for 2004. Happy Flight earned 1.33 billion yen, while Robo-G earned 1.16 billion yen. I guess his films have been on a downward trend since Wood Job and Survival Family didn't even break 1 billion. It's too bad.

Overall, better. I didn't have too high of hopes for it, but it had a good opening followed by a holiday week that improved its outlook some more. Like most of the films that have only been in release for a few weeks, it's still hard to give a projected total due to how they could behave post the holidays (the last seven days have more or less been holidays), especially once summer vacation ends (beginning of September). Different films simply perform differently post-holidays.

All that said... running the numbers for the next several weeks and giving it some good/great weekly holds (no weak or amazing ones), I expect it'll exceed ¥7 billion ($60 million+) and perhaps finish around ¥8 billion ($70 million+). But again, this isn't a prediction yet, just a rough projection.

A bit of a weak Sunday (largely flat), but since it was the day before things return to normal (for adults, schools are still out for another week or two), the evening/night business was down significantly compared to last Sunday.

There was also a typhoon (downgraded to a cyclone) that affected some parts of the country over the weekend, and while it shouldn't have had a noticeable impact given its path and weakened state, it could have slightly deflated things a tad.

Overall though, so-so Sunday (and weekend) aside, Obon Festival 2019 was incredibly strong, and I feel confident in calling it the strongest Obon Festival on record at the box-office. I failed to find any year that could rival, much less beat it, since 1998.

I'd give Weathering With You a 50/50 shot of surpassing Avatar and entering the All-Time Top 10. We'll likely known once we see how it performs in the first week of September. Many summer releases either collapse or see sharp declines then, so we can get a better idea of where it may be headed.

Thanks for all the hard work, Corpse!

Very impressive showing by Weathering With You so far. Any chance that it will surpass the lifetime gross of Avatar in Japan?

Also, I'm a really big fan of Yaguchi Shinobu movies, so I'm disappointed by the earnings of Dance With Me. Is the lack of any recognizable names responsible for its poor performance this week? Wood Job had Sometani Shota, Nagasawa Masami, and Ito Hideaki, while Survival Family had Fukatsu Eri. Or is Yaguchi considered to really only make niche films? (I do remember that Waterboys and Swing Girls were very popular). Dance With Me is among the few Japanese movies I'm actually looking forward to seeing this year.

I wish people would support the smaller films more these days and not find themselves in the cinemas only when there's a Disney-Marvel-Pixar-Universal blockbuster on the screens.

It's a bit late to post a Weekend Forecast, so I'll go ahead and post the daily estimate for this weekend instead. Saturday and Sunday will likely come in below any of the weekdays, but that's normal coming off of a major holiday week.

Holds are still looking to be very good (One Piece aside, of course), probably mostly sub-20/25% or even better for most films. The Lion King should rise to the #1 spot, but Weathering With You will make it a close battle and could reclaim the top spot itself in its sixth-weekend of release.

Corpse, was Frozen's final gross ¥25.48 billion or ¥25.50 billion? I've been seeing the latter reported in official sources like Eiga and the link above.

It was the former for a few years before being updated to the latter at some point. My guess is that it received a re-release, but that would have been a pretty lousy re-release. ¥25.50 billion is the official total now though, I just haven't updated it yet.

Yeah. The first post of this thread has been needing updated for a few years now.

I'll update it at some point over the weekend, but rather than listing the Top 10 of each year like it currently displayed, I'm going to expand it tremendously by including every film that earned more than ¥1 billion (which usually results in a Top 50/60 or so).

Hey Corpse, is there a easily linkable wrap-up post that has charts like top grossing all time or top attended all time in one consistent place? The very first post of this thread has both, but Kimi no Na wa isn't on either list, so it's been at least a couple years since they were actively updated. I know you occasionally make updated posts now and again, but it can be hard to find them, requiring scanning back through dozens of pages.

There's also this:

Corpse, was Frozen's final gross ¥25.48 billion or ¥25.50 billion? I've been seeing the latter reported in official sources like Eiga and the link above.

It's in Japanese. I'm also pretty sure Coprse has a list of his own.

Top movie made 30.8 billion Japanese Yen.
