Hmm interesting that people are watching TS3 in 3D. That presents a solid opportunity for HP7 to open big and get help from 3D as well

Admissions comparison (usual Toho and Movix locations) for the weekend

Saturday:
Pokemon 13 - 32410/44891
Toy Story 3 - 27179/57086
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 26417/56308

Sunday:
Pokemon 13 - 34871/44891
Toy Story 3 - 31347/52252
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 26743/49965

Weekend:
Pokemon 13 - 67281/89782
Toy Story 3 - 58526/109338
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 53160/106273

Looks like a large portion of the tickets sold for TS3 were 3D because, while very good, this doesn't indicate a gross of Y940m. I doubt other locations would have made such a significant difference.

Bayside Shakedown 3 sold a little over 80,000 from these locations last weekend, and grossed Y972m for instance. Of the 82,000+ for BS3 last weekend, 47,000 were for Saturday, just 1,000 less than Alice in Wonderland sold opening day, yet BS3 opened Y170m below on Saturday, Y530m vs Y700m, because of the 3D prices for Alice.

Opening Days:

Title/Admissions at usual locations/Yen Gross (USD Gross)

Alice in Wonderland - 48,000, Y700m ($7.6m)
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 47,000, Y530m ($6m)
Toy Story 3 - 27,179, Y450m ($5.1m)

You can definitely see how much 3D is boosting films in Japan by the comparison above. Normally, 27,179 would result in an opening day of about Y300m ($3.4m) when all locations are included.

Note, admissions I use are NOT for the entire country, but only a small portion of locations (about 15%).

Top 10 Opening Weekends of 2010

1. April, Alice in Wonderland (Disney) - $14.3m (2day), 859 screens - $16,644 pta, 828,149 admissions
2. Dec. 09, One Piece Strong World (TOEI) - $11.7m (2day), 188 screens - $62,192 pta, 819,738 admissions
3. July, Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) - $11.1m (2day), 447 screens - 24,789 pta, 707,399 admissions
July, Toy Story 3 (Disney) - $10.6m (2day), 525 screens - $20,190 pta, 625,000 admissions
4. Dec. 09, Up (Disney) - $7m (2day), 663 screens - $10,461 pta, 440,804 admissions
5. Dec. 09, Avatar (Fox) - $6.61m (2day)/$14.56m (5day), 839 screens - $7,881 pta
6. March, Doraemon South Sea Adventure (Toho) - $6.12m (2day), 366 screens - $16,710 pta, 498,198 admissions
7. April, Nodame Cantabile: The Movie II (Toho) - $6.11m (2day), 410 screens - $14,915 pta, 437,613 admissions
8. April, Detective Conan Lost Ship in the Sky (Toho) - $6.1m (2day), 352 screens - $17,339 pta, 471,527 admissions
9. Dec. 09, Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider W & Dikeido (TOEI) - $5.01m (2day), 292 screens - $17,882 pta, 396,178 admissions
10. Dec. 09, Nodame Cantabile: The Movie I (Toho) - $4.36m (2day), 409 screens - $10,612 pta, 317,302 admissions

All of Toy Story 3's numbers are still estimates (admissions calculated by me using Up's avg. ticket price), but it's not going to be underestimated enough to rise above Bayside Shakedown 3, the gap is a bit too big, and clearly not overestimated enough to drop below Up. So 4th biggest weekend of the year is locked up, and incredibly strong, narrowly beating Finding Nemo which was the top opener for Pixar. Overall, I believe it's the 3rd biggest opening for an animated movie in USD (6th in Yen).

This year is so massive. Everything is overperforming or matching expecations it seems. $2.5b will probably be cleared.

Avatar - $165m
Alice in Wonderland - $135m
Bayside Shakedown 3 - $95-$115m
Harry Potter 7 - $95-$115m
Toy Story 3 - $70-$90m
Umizaru 3 - $70-$90m
The Borrower Arrietty - $70-$90m
One Piece Strong World - $55-$60m
Up - $55-$60m

10th spot for the year is undecided. Nodame Cantabile 2 has grossed in the low/mid 40's, Pokemon 13 could get $50m again, and there could still be a few surprises this fall.

The Toy Story 3 opening of Y940,000,000 ($10.6m) is quite incredible.

As long as it's not hit too hard by The Borrower Arrietty next weekend, $75m is a lock.

I'll update on it and the others in a few minutes.

Post Re: Japan Box Office; 7/10-11 - Toy Story to open on top?
It performed very well on opening day. Good enough to open at No.1 I'm confident in saying, now.

From the theaters and screens I've reported on lately, admissions were only 15% below Alice in Wonderland, and 10% below Bayside Shakedown 3.

It's difficult to calculate an average ticket price for TS3 since it's in 3D and IMAX, which are of course the most expensive tickets ($26 USD), but to counter this, the 2D tickets are much cheaper ($12.50 USD) since it's animated and attracts a younger audience that don't pay adult price ($20 USD).

Bayside Shakedown 3 won't see the Sunday drop Toy Story 3 will experience, and it's impossible to know when the people (2m of them) who purchased advance tickets for Pokemon 13 will turn out, but regardless of all that, Toy Story 3 should have No.1 locked up.

It'll just need to survive Studio Ghibli next weekend. Next weekend is going to be a record for sure.

From what I can tell by morning ticket sales on Saturday, it's performing a little better than expected and it will edge out Confessions for the 4th spot this weekend. Both are R15+ (equivalent of R17 in the US), so the avg. ticket for both films should be similar.

Assuming a weekend gross around $2m for Confessions, that may mean Predators can do $2.5m, maybe up to $3m. Which would be very solid, and gives it a good chance at Y1 billion ($11m+).

Terrible, won't debut in the Top 10 with under a $1,000 pta.

Spoiler: show
It's doing okay, looks to open in 4th or 5th this weekend.

Post Re: Japan Box Office; 7/10-11
Toy Story really picked up during the day on Saturday, while Bayside Shakedown 3 isn't doing all that great, down over 30% from last Saturday, which is a hefty drop in Japan. Perhaps the mixed user reviews are the reason.

Below are the total ticket sales for Saturday at the same Toho and Movix locations I've posted sales for before,

Pokemon 13 - 32410/44891
Toy Story 3 - 27179/57086
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 26417/56308

If the rest of the country would mirror the results above for Saturday, it's going to be a really close race as rough calculations rank them: TS3 > Pokemon 13 > Bayside Shakedown 3. However, they're very, very close and could easily change when more locations are factored in.

And some news for TS3 was released, having it tracking 30% ahead of Up based on partial first day sales. If it maintained that pace throughout the rest of Saturday and on Sunday, it would open around Y800,000,000 or about $9m USD, which would be good enough for No.1... I think.

Post Re: Japan Box Office; 7/10-11 - Pokemon in the lead w/1st shows
Toy Story 3's average ticket is about Y1450 ($16.50 USD)
Bayside Shakedown 3's average ticket is about Y1400 ($16 USD)
Pokemon 13's average ticket is about Y1100 ($12.50 USD)

Bayside's is accurate, while TS3's is based on Up's avg ticket price opening weekend, and Pokemon 13's on Pokemon 12's avg. ticket price opening weekend.

TS3 might be hard to gauge though with possibly more 3D screens than Up (although, it's opening on 140 less screens than Up overall), and Pokemon 13 is a bit tricky having sold 2m advance tickets which are never used all at once, but throughout the first month. 2m admissions would give it the biggest opening of all time.

I don't really understand TS3's 525 screen count, Up opened on 662 screens. Maybe Disney decided to not abandon Alice in Wonderland quite yet.

Pokemon 13 will be the clear winner this weekend in admissions, and will probably win today in gross as well, and is slightly ahead of last year's film at the same locations, but it's much cheaper tickets give Toy Story 3 and Bayside Shakedown 3 room to catch it in gross for the weekend.

Going to be interesting to see how the rest of the day turns out.

Toho has announced that Bayside Shakedown 3 has grossed Y1.9 billion ($21.5m) in 7 days. The film grossed Y972 ($11.1m) million the first 2 days in release, so that means a gross between Y900 million ($10.1m) - Y1.0 billion ($11.2m) from Mon - Fri., or basically matching it's opening weekend during the weekdays.

It's always a good sign when a film matches it's opening weekend in weekdays. $30m is possible after 9days now.

I wonder, though, is it the supposed extended cut or the normal cut that gets re-released in Japan soon? Any info?

October re-release, the extended version.

Weekend Forecast, 7/10-11

1 1 Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) 2
2 N Pokemon 13 Ruler of Illusions: Zoroark (Toho)
3 N Toy Story 3 (Walt Disney Intl)

4 2 Confessions (Toho) 6
5 N Predators (Fox Intl)
6 N Fowler Desperate Sword (Toei)
7 3 Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec, The (Asmik Ace) 2
8 4 Iron Man 2 (Paramount) 5
9 5 Sex and the City 2 (Warner Bros.) 6
10 N Anpanman the Movie (2010) (TTC)

Image
Bayside Shakedown 3 is expected to remain on top this weekend thanks to it's strong weekdays, and no noticeable signs of initial frontloading after the 7 year gap since the last film.

Image
Pokemon 13 is projected to narrowly beat Toy Story 3 thanks to it's whopping advance ticket sales. It's been reported to have sold 2m tickets (meaning over $20m in gross already, but sales are spread out for the month). Pokemon 11 holds the all time animated pre-sales record, selling 2.4m tickets in advance, besting any animated movie in the world, and is in the Guinness Book of Records.

Image
Toy Story 3 will open above Up, but thanks to the unusual Summer release date, may have to settle for opening in third. There's still a chance it can beat out Pokemon 13 since the tickets for TS3 are about 40% higher, but it's an uphill battle against Pokemon's big loyal fanbase.

Distributor Toho earned 3.2b Yen (about $36.5m USD) in June 2010.

From Jan. through June of 2010, Toho has now earned 28.6b Yen (or about $325m USD). The total does not include Nodame Cantabile Part 1 or Professor Layton (which combine for about 4.7b Yen ($53.5m USD)), but they'll be added in for the 2010 total figure that is likely between 33-34b Yen or $370-380m as of June 2010.

Toho recently released Bayside Shakedown 3 for July, which has earned 1.5b Yen ($17m+ USD) in five days. Toho is expecting a total of 10b Yen ($114m) or more for the third installment.

Toho's other July releases include: Pokemon 13 (7/10), Studio Ghibli's latest, The Borrower Arrietty (7/17), and Naruto Shippuden The Movie 4 (7/30).

July 2010 is shaping up to become Toho's biggest month ever, and possibly Toho's biggest year to date, their record being 2008 with Y73.91b ($820.8m). In 2009, Toho earned Y65.5b ($724.3m).

Post Re: Japan Box Office; 7-10-11 - Toy Story v Pokemon v Bayside
Bayside Shakedown 3 has grossed Y1.5 billion ($17m) in five days, according to Distributor Toho. The goal is probably Y2.5 billion ($28.5m) after 9 days. Hopefully it can do $30m.

The predictions from local publications this weekend are all different, it's great.

Quote:
Bayside Shakedown 3 - Y800m ($9m)
Pokemon 13 - Y700m ($8m)
Toy Story 3 - Y650m ($7.4m)

Toy Story 3 - Y750m ($8.5m)
Bayside Shakedown 3 - Y650m ($7.4m)
Pokemon 13 - Y600m ($6.4m)

Admissions
Pokemon 13 > Bayside Shakedown 3 > Toy Story 3

No grosses here

Let's see if it can top the record, set on 4/17-18, 2010, top 3 of Alice in Wonderland (Y1.31 billion), Nodame Cantabile II (Y564m), and Detective Conan 14 (Y561m) / Y2.43b ($26.3m). Doubtful, $25m looks to be about the max, but it's doable.

The bottom half of the top 10 is the weakest in terms of gross in a long time. That'll soon change with the July releases, though.

I've mentioned Bayside Shakedown 3 enough for the week. It's a very strong opening, but just a little below expectations. Toho is still expecting a gross of Y10 billion ($114m) or more. It's run will last into 2011.

Confessions sees the first drop of it's run after spending 4 weeks on top, but it's the best hold in the top 10. Having survived Bayside Shakedown 3, it should be able to reach $40m before it's end.

Asmik Ace is having a good year, and have another solid hit with Adele.

Iron Man 2 and Sex and the City 2 continue to do solid business. IM2 may not reach $15m, but it's better than the original's 9m.

Alice in Wonderland will be dropped by most locations this coming weekend, so it'll finish it's spectacular run with about $135m.
