Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (05/18-19)
Not by a mile, but it'll be a comfortable #1. It really over-performed what its pre-sales were suggesting, probably indicating that it skewed heavily towards older adults (40-60+). Its opening is also much higher than most other shows with similar ratings (season 1 averaged just a 8.9% share) typically debut to.
Weekend Estimates will be up in a bit.

¥3 billion total is locked for Detective Pikachu it seems. How much higher do you think it can go?

The film has been enjoying good WOM, and is likely benefiting from those now turning out for it that were previously weary of the film due to its Hollywood production. I believe this will be a fairly short-lived boost, maybe til the end of the month, but we may need to keep watch on this one -- it could end up being extra-leggy.
>The Confidence Man JP will be attempting to block Pikachu from rising to #1, and it certainly could do it, though I think it'll fall just short of the top spot. Either way, it'll have a respectable opening weekend.
>The big trio from April, Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire, Kingdom, and Avengers: Endgame, will continue to add to their impressive running totals. Almost every April (pre-Golden Week) has a similar slate of three particular tentpoles (a Detective Conan film, a big live-action domestic film, and a big Disney film), and this year's trio are among the strongest of the decade. All three films will be in the Yearly Top 10 (Conan probably Top 3/5).

The top 3 films above are the only three with any numbers revealed so far, so I'm just going to post their numbers and just the weekend rankings of the remaining seven films. I'll then fill in the rest of the numbers when/if they're made available later this week.] No additional numbers yet? Or do you have your own estimates for the lower ranks? Nope. It's rare, but sometimes weekends before major holiday periods just never have their full results revealed. This is one of those cases. I can provide estimates for the other films for you though. I'll PM you once I edit the original post sometime over the weekend.

Endgame edged out the victory in revenue, but Detective Pikachu managed to win the weekend in admissions by just 2,000 (209,000 versus 207,000).
>Endgame is by far the biggest non-Spider-Man superhero film ever in the market now, an achievement it accomplished last week, and will soon exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. A ¥6 billion ($55 million) finish is probably asking for just a bit too much, but it'll get very close to that mark, likely finishing with ¥5.8/5.9 billion. That won't be enough to put it over any of the Spider-Man trilogy films, but to put this number into perspective, it'll be 60% higher than Infinity War; 65% higher than The Avengers; and 85% higher than Age of Ultron.
>Detective Pikachu held very well in the post-Golden Week weekend, though the drop is a little misleading since it opened on the tail-end of the holiday frame. Still, this is a good hold, much stronger than the second weekend holds that the animated films typically have. I'm actually expecting legs to be pretty solid, so a total of ¥3 billion ($25 million+) is attainable.
>Kingdom is still going strong, exceeding the ¥4 billion milestone over its fourth weekend of release. It's been showing some of the better post-Golden Week holds, and even with mediocre legs from this point on, it should be able to reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone. This is a big win for Toho (and Sony), as well as for live-action adaptation of popular manga. If it exceeds ¥5 billion, it'll become only the third ever live-action manga adaptation from a Weekly Shonen, following second films in the Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin trilogies, respectively.
>Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire experienced a harsh drop in both earnings and ranking in its fifth weekend of release, but the decline was to be expected given its strength over the Golden Week holiday frame. It will end up getting very close to the ¥9 billion ($80 million+) mark, but it could also just fall short. Last year's film, Zero the Enforcer (the highest grossing film in the franchise), stopped just shy of that figure as well until it received a premium format expansion six-months after its debut that pushed it beyond the mark.
>ALL of the openers, ranked 7th-10th, haven't had any of their numbers released yet, except for the 3-day total for The Curse of Llorona. So, they're all estimates based on their weekend admissions rankings. When, or if (due to being either limited or near-limited), their weekend numbers are released, I'll edit this post with them.
>And, Bohemian Rhapsody is now at ¥13,002,823,080 ($116.6 million) with 9,414,183 admissions after 178 days in release. It's still playing on 59 screens, but I expect it'll probably finish up very soon now. An absolutely stunning, phenomenal performance.

I'm sure none have done it after not reaching #1 in previous weekends. I'll doubt check, but I'm 99% certain it'll become only the third superhero film to be #1 in its third weekend, after Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man 2 opened just two weeks after Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and while it did open at #1, that was its only weekend at #1 due to Harry Potter taking over the #1 spot again in its second weekend onward. And again, excluding the Spider-Man trilogy, Endgame has basically claimed every other record for a superhero film in the market.

Euphonium The Movie: Oath's Finale (Shochiku) WK4The post-Golden Week weekend is one of the worst in terms of drops and debuts, and given this year's GW was super-sized, this weekend will follow that tradition, but on steroids.
Since Endgame is naturally frontloaded, it'll perhaps, surprisingly, have one of the better holds as a result of not having as far to fall after the holidays. It'll likely return to #1, and pre-sales suggest this as well. Detective Pikachu will also have one of the "better" holds this weekend as well since it was released on the tail-end of Golden Week, therefor it didn't burn as much demand before its opening. Detective Conan, however, was the strongest film over the Golden Week holiday frame, so it's going to suffer one of the biggest drops and will probably fall from #1.
The bottom half of the Top 10 is a mess. There are a lot of limited and near-limited releases opening this weekend, and since holdovers in the bottom half of the Top 10 last week are going to see huge drops, the #6-10th positions could go to any of around ten or so films.

Re: Japan Box Office: Super Golden Week Concludes
Weekend Numbers are going to be really scattered from the past two weeks. Most of the weekend actuals are available for this past weekend, but very, very few are up from two weeks ago. I'll post what's available from two weeks ago and update it when/if more are ever made available.
Also, the cumulative totals from this past weekend will be as of MONDAY, not Sunday.
