Chiming in to say that I'm really digging the Shogun TV series on FX and wouldn't mind seeing it air on the big screen (perhaps across 4-5 parts) for a limited time.

Is this the first time ever for Japan's cinema to show English dub (with Japanese sub) despite the film's original language is Japanese?

On the brighter side, here's the result of Japan Academy Film Prize
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/47th_Japa ... Film_Prize
Some interesting things I notice
-Godzilla -1 sweeps as expected
-Is this the first time foreigner win best director?
-Happiest person would be Sakura Ando, who win both lead actress and support actress in the same event, she already won both categories before. Japanese voters don't seem to care about 'spread the wealth' concept.
-The battle between Heron and Blue Giant end in a happy ending situation where Heron take best animation while Blue Giant take best music.

Is 2023 the first year ever for Japanese box-office that top 4 films (Japanese box-office calendar, including the First Slam Dunk) or top 3 films (Standard calendar, excluding the First Slam Sunk) are all animated films?

I'm going to make some time tomorrow to update the Biggest OW chart. Why? Because Part 1 of the Haikyuu movie just achieved the fifth biggest 3-Day OW ever, and I believe the 6th biggest overall.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (12/11-13)
I would say it's a bit disappointing. It's still a lot for the type of "film" that it is, but the decline from the last similar "film" last year is worth noting. This is considered the weakest arc in the story too, so that could have had an impact on it.

I do think its overall popularity has likely waned since 2019-2021 though. The manga ended almost 4 years ago now, and the anime releases have been pretty far apart, so not having a steady supply of content for people can have a negative impact. It's harder to keep massive amounts of people on board this way.

The last arc (or two technically) is being adapted as a two (or three) part theatrical film, so I'm hoping Part 1 can make late 2024. But probably doubtful since season 4 is suppose to release in April. Not sure if ufotable can put out a (presumably) 11/12 episode season plus first part of a movie in the same year.

And Japanese films released in parts typically release in quick succession with only a couple/few months apart. So if part 1 is ready for late 2024, that means part 2 (and maybe 3) would be close to completion too.

I know, but HASHIRA TRAINING is nevertheless down 44 % compared to SWORDSMITH VILLAGE...

Hashira Training, like Swordsmith Village, is just a compilation of old episode plus new unaired episode. There's no reason to craze over it.

Is the DEMON SLAYER craze already over?

Isn't the opening of HASHIRA TRAINING kinda soft?

From the news, 2023 is second only to 2019 in term of box-office, just like many countries.

Downey should win for sure plus many technical awards like Cinematography, sound etc. It will win enough awards to make it a strong play. I am hoping it does very well in large markets with big expat population in Japan. Let us see what happens close to release.

Corpse. how many imax/plf screens are there in Japan?

Great date. Maybe the 22nd would have been just a tad more ideal, being a week closer to what I presume will be an Oscars sweep, and it'd have the full benefit of Spring Break* versus just one weekend. And it's a month before Golden Week too.

If it's going to do any significant numbers in Japan, it really couldn't have a better date. Just needs to sweep the Oscars now, or at least take home all/most the big awards (BP and BD being required).

*Spring Break is ultimately pretty minimal for adult/senior-skewing films which I expect this one to be, so not much of a loss missing out on most of it, really.

I feel like it's locked to win BP BD and BA (Cillian), if it could grab a few others (emily blunt for supporting?) that would help a lot

Oppenheimer is at $952,954,330 globally. Maybe another $4M domestic for $957M. Maybe another $3M from other global markets.

Need $40M to get to $1B. Ever so close!
