Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (05/2 I don't think so. I still mostly think it'll have a similar performance as the 2014 film in the market. If it didn't include the many classic kaiju, I'd be predicting a decline, but they'll probably help keep it from dropping too much.
Friday pre-sales are pretty poor so far. It'll be more of an evening/night film, but even the busiest theaters aren't really seeing much in pre-sales for the day. That said, Friday's performance won't really tell us too much this week because Saturday is the 1st of the month (national discount day), so Friday will be deflated as a result. Still, nothing is indicating a breakout or anything of the sort. A big film would still have strong Friday ticket sales regardless.
And I wouldn't take Deadline as a credible source for the market either... Nothing against them, but they always seem to over-hype films based on Japanese material in the market. I remember they "heard" that Alita: Battle Angel was having big pre-sales a week before opening (I didn't even see any advance showings...), even saying people were seeing it twice..., and then suggested it was headed toward a big debut in the market. But that definitely didn't happen. It had a mediocre debut, followed by very poor legs that landed it in the bomb category. And that wasn't surprising. Anyone who follows the Japanese market will tell you that it's very rare for Hollywood adaptations of Japanese source material to succeed in the market.

Enthusiasm, we hear, is high and Toho has been pushing the hell out of it. The last Godzilla had its second-best showing in Japan with about a $30M final." They Disney Princess films don't just outgross the Disney Animal films, they blow them out of the water at the box-office.
Disney Princess Remakes:

¥11.80 billion ($142.8 million) - Alice in Wonderland
¥6.54 billion ($63.5 million) - Maleficent
¥5.73 billion ($46.6 million) - Cinderella
¥2.78 billion ($26.3 million) - Alice Through the Looking Glass
Disney Animal Remakes:
¥2.43 billion ($21.5 million) - Christopher Robin
¥2.21 billion ($21.5 million) - The Jungle Book
Sub-¥1 billion* ($8/9 million) - Dumbo
*Dumbo might have barely crawled to ¥1 billion, but tracking ended far enough below the mark that it probably did miss it.
Aladdin opens in two weeks, so we'll see how that one does first. It's more in the Disney Princess category, but it's not a traditional Disney Princess film. Will Smith is a decent draw still and keeping the songs and musical numbers in the film will help it, so those are some positives. Overall, I'm feeling good about its chances of success in the market. It won't be Beauty and the Beast or Alice in Wonderland big, but maybe more of a Maleficent/Cinderella type of performance.
As for The Lion King... It's clearly in the Animal category, more so than any other Disney live-action remake, so that's a major negative against it based on the performances of past Disney live-action remakes. Is the remake still a musical? The most recent trailer has Timon and Pumbaa singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", but I haven't heard any of the actual classic songs/musical numbers yet. If the retains the songs/musical numbers, that'll help it a lot. If they're excluded, I wouldn't be surprised with a very disappointing (bomb territory) performance.

I expect good/great holds for most of its run, and it should end up finishing above the ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) mark. This would be a particularly good result for a film that opened just two weeks after a major holiday period.
>Aircraft Carrier Ibuki comes in second place, and didn't disappoint with a solid 194,000 admissions sold over the weekend frame across 331 screens. It reached 265,070 admissions since opening on Friday. This is a solid debut, but it's a very impressive debut for independent distributor Kino Films. It should finish around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).

>Sadako makes a surprising debut in fourth place, selling 118,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 416 screens. It reached 152,023 admissions since opening on Friday. Its average ticket price came in much higher than I was expecting. I don't have an opening list of the many Sadako (Grudge) films, but this opening is likely in the middle of pack. Legs can be kind of unpredictable for the horror genre, but a total of ¥1 billion ($10 million) is doable.
>Kingdom rounded out the Top 5 by edging ahead of Endgame this weekend (the two films have been neck-and-neck for the past few weeks), earning itself a good hold in its sixth-weekend of release. Unless it experiences an unexpected drop next week, it's likely to outgross Death Note: The Last Name (¥5.2 billion) and then Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (¥5.22 billion) to become the highest-grossing live-action film adapted from a Weekly Shonen manga series.
>Avengers: Endgame gets bumped out of the Top 5, but it's still performing well, and holding noticeably better than most superhero films. Its chances of reaching the ¥6 billion milestone was 50/50 at best just last week, but this weekend's hold should nearly lock the milestone up. I expect it'll finish at ¥6.1/6.2 billion ($55/56 million).
>Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire continues its excellent run in its seventh-weekend of release, and is keeping a strong ¥1 billion lead over last year's franchise record-setting release. It's very likely to exceed the ¥9 billion milestone now, and while its impressive lead over last year's film will begin to shrink very soon, I do believe it'll stay ahead of it and set a new franchise record. I expect it'll end up grossing around ¥9.2/9.3 billion ($84/85 million).

A few notes:
Weathering With You probably has the widest range since it could "only" earn around ¥10 billion, but it could also easily do ¥15 billion+. It's a uniquely difficult film to predict given how massive Shinkai's last film was.
Toy Story 4 is in a wide range. I expect it to do much better than ¥5 billion but I doubt it matches the success of its predecessor given how Pixar sequels have all declined in the market, so I wouldn't expect a total too close to ¥10 billion.
Aladdin is still a dark horse to me. There are both good and bad signs for it, equally, so I don't feel confident throwing out any specific number for it.

The film adaptation of the Fuji TV Comedy surprised last weekend and had some good weekdays, and pre-sales today suggest it'll have a strong second weekend hold as well. All of this is evidence of the film is going to have a nice run, and it'll likely keep a strong presence at the box-office until early/mid-July.
>Aircraft Carrier Ibuki is a bit of a dark horse and has a slight chance of surprising and taking the #1 spot. The rescue drama features a renowned cast and good reviews. Independent distributor Kino Films certainly has confidence it, too, given their aggressive marketing and release strategy (332 theaters is a lot for this distributor). Ultimately, I think it'll fall short of the top spot, but it'll have a respectable debut that Kino Films will be satisfied with. Look for this one to potentially have some strong legs.
>Pokemon: Detective Pikachu appears like it's coming back down from the boost it seemed to receive from previously weary moviegoers, but it's still holding well. The last two weeks suggested it could have easily exceed the ¥3 billion milestone, and while it'll still get there, it'll finish just barely above that mark again. Overall, this may still be viewed as "disappointing" in the market, but the ¥3/3.5 billion mark is where the recent films in the animated franchise have landed, so I'd consider it a modest success. It could have been much less rather than much more.
>Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire, Avengers: Endgame, and Kingdom will all continue to better their already excellent performances, with all three films still on track to reach their final milestones of ¥9 billion, ¥6 billion, and ¥5 billion, respectively. All three are above and beyond performers and should find themselves a spot on the Yearly Top 10 list.

The first film based on the Fuji TV Comedy sold an impressive 284,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 324 screens, and reached 357,228 admissions sold since Friday. This is a very good debut, and with an early strong reception, legs will probably be kind. I would expect a finish around ¥2.5 billion ($20-25 million). Certainly not shabby for this time of year.

>Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire holds steady to round out the Top 5 in its sixth-weekend of release. It continues to track ahead of last year's franchise record-setting film, Zero the Enforcer, and should finish right around the ¥9 billion ($82/83 million) mark. Toho will probably need to give it some special screenings or a late expansion of some sort (like they did with last year's film), in order to surpass the franchise record of ¥9.18 billion, and they actually announced just that with "cheering" screenings at select locations beginning on May 30th.

The first movie in the TV comedy is enjoying strong reviews from both critics and audiences, so I would expect a good run to go along with its good opening. It'll probably exceed ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>There is a very close race for the #3 spot (less than 1,000 admissions from ~70% of the market separate them), but I think it'll go to Kingdom since it plays better in rural areas (just don't be surprised if Endgame is #3). All of the pre-Golden Week openers in April have performed very well, and Kingdom is no exception. It's going to clear the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, a figure that has become difficult for domestic live-action films to reach. Also, there's even a possibility that it'll become the highest-grossing live-action film adapted from a Weekly Shonen manga series. It needs to outgross Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno's ¥5.22 billion total for that title, and that looks at least 50% doable.

Last year's film got an expansion very late in its run (6 months later), which allowed it to exceed ¥9 billion. This year's film is on track to reach just about ¥9 billion ($82/83 million) without any expansion, so I guess it'll be Toho's decision if they want it to claim the record or not.
