So when Toei said they set a goal of ¥4 billion for DBZ and it actually only made ¥3.74 billion then that doesn't mean that it underperformed and Toei are disappointed with it's performance then?

¥2.6 billion plus is my goal for Pokemon. Sad it won't reach ¥3 billion. :(

It's common practice in Japan to build hype/interest with news articles like that. Studios in Japan do it all the time, and 9/10 times the films don't hit the studios "expectations", because they're near the absolute high-end of potential.

Unless they're actually realistic (for example, say they were expecting ¥4 billion instead of ¥5 billion), I don't really bother posting those reports anymore. ¥5 billion isn't impossible, but it's incredibly unlikely.

Aren't Toho's expectations for Attack on Titan 5 billion yen?

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-b ... ilm/.91170

Wouldn't that be a disappointment based on your predictions?

And Pokemon, don't know what to think of it. There's the Pikachu Festival coming up, could help attendance, but this one seems like a foregone conclusion that it won't reach 3 billion yen, sad.

It can avoid that fate, but I'd say it's 50/50 at the moment.

All the holdovers will be tested this week, as five new wide releases are invading theaters just in time for Obon Festival next week: Jurassic World (Wednesday), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Friday), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Friday), Japan's Longest Day (Saturday), and Kamen Rider Drive The Movie: Surprise Drive (Saturday).

Next week is the biggest week every year, and many wide releases (including several blockbusters) can thrive without concern for competition... However, this year is very crowded and screens/showtimes is going to be key to receiving the significant Obon boost, and I think Pokemon, and everything else ranked 6th-10th this weekend, will fall out of the Top 10.

Looking at last year's Pokemon movie, this year's movie is only 50 million yen behind at the same period. I expected worse given the drops and the overall underperformance. It might manage to avoid the lowest grossing movie in the franchise title after all. What do you think ?

>Attack on Titan - Part 1 held off the Minions over the weekend, selling 466,953 tickets across 427 screens over the weekend.

The first part of the big budget live-action adaptation of the hit Attack on Titan series, directed by Shinji Higuchi (who will co-direct the Godzilla reboot next year), bested the debuts of the first Gantz film from 2011 by 2% (7% in admissions) and the first-half sequel to Rurouni Kenshin last year by 2% (8% in admissions).

Part 1 is off to a very successful start, and should earn between ¥3.5-4.5 billion ($30-40 million) on close to 3 million admissions. Part 2, subtitled End of the World, opens on September 19th.

***************

>Minions may have come in second place, however, it achieved the biggest opening weekend for a imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film, opening 50% higher than the previous record holder, 2007's Shrek the Third.

The spin-off to the popular Despicable Me films sold 449,055 tickets over the weekend on 619 screens, and sold 604,000 tickets over its 3-day opening.

Most films targeting families achieve huge multipliers this time of year, thanks to Summer and Obon Festival, so Minions is practically locked to become the first imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film to gross over ¥3 billion ($25 million+), and could very likely earn north of ¥4 billion (~$35 million), too.

***************

The Top 3 holdovers from the past three weeks all held very well in the face of two big openers, all down sub-20%, and maintained their usual ranking and close weekend numbers again, too.

>Hero 2 halted its downward spiral since opening, selling 260,179 tickets in its third weekend of release, and exceeded 2 million admissions over the weekend, too. It's still trailing its predecessor and other major TV films, but it's revived it's chance of achieving the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone, and could get near 4 million admissions, too. Not bad at all, if it's able to manage these feats.

***************

>The Boy and the Beast is still holding up very well, selling 236,689 admissions in its fourth weekend of release, and exceeded 2.5 million over the weekend. Mamoru Hosoda's latest hit continues to track over 50% ahead of 2012's Wolf Children, and it has yet to receive its Obon Festival boost, which Wolf Children had reached in its fourth week of release.

A conservative finish for The Boy and the Beast is ¥6 billion (~$50 million) and 4.5 million+ admissions, but it's looking more likely to exceed ¥7 billion (~$60 million) and 5.5 million admissions. Either projection would be enough to earn the Summer 2015 crown, but let's see if Jurassic World, which opens in two days, can challenge it before declaring it the top film of the Summer.

***************

>Inside Out is also still holding well, though its run has been taking a backseat to The Boy and the Beast each week, and now Minions which just opened 34% higher than it did.

Pixar's latest sold 225,100 tickets in its third weekend, and exceeded 1.5 million admissions after three weeks in release. Despite it not posting blockbuster numbers, it's still performing well, and shouldn't be seen as too disappointing, as it'll still exceed ¥4 billion ($30 million+) and 3 million+ admissions. It's pretty much doing the standard numbers for an original Pixar film.

***************

>Love Live! The School Idol Movie outgrossed the third Magi Madoka Magica film over the weekend, and became the highest-grossing late-night anime film ever in the process. After eight weeks in release, it's sold over 1.55 million tickets, and has never played on more than 121 screens. Very, very impressive run.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Titans and Minions)
It certainly benefited from the goodwill from the Despicable Me films. Both were surprises at the box office, and while not big hits or anything, they performed very nicely for non-Disney/Pixar films. And they sold quite well on DVD.

The other key factor for its early success is that there's not one film in release right now that's targeting solely a family/kid audience.

-The Boy and the Beast is attracting primarily teens and young adults (60% of its OW audience consisted of people between 16-30). It's getting some families in the seats as it does decent business in the morning, but they're a small portion of its audience.

-Inside Out is attracting some families since it starts off pretty well in the morning, but it really picks up in the early afternoon and then slows down as the evening progresses. This pattern suggests it's attracting a fairly broad audience, but families are only making up an average portion of its audience.

-Pokemon XY has its dwindling fanbase still supporting it, and its incredibly low avg. ticket prices shows that it's still attracting a very young audience (elementary aged). However, it's just not doing much business and isn't much of a draw with families/kids anymore with Yo-Kai Watch having supplanted it.

Everything else in release that's making any impact at the box office is attracting adults/seniors, so Minions has filled an important demographic that's been largely neglected this Summer: Families. And that's the most important audience this time of year.

I can't believe this crap will be doing so well in Japan. They don't usually disappoint me when it comes to which animated movies they decide to support but I think it might have happened this time.

As I've mentioned many times in the past, imported non-Disney/Pixar animated films don't really have an audience in Japan. You won't even find a single imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film in the Top 100 Highest-Grossing Animated Films in the market.

And they've performed so poorly in more recent years, that sometimes they don't even receive theatrical releases anymore: Home, Penguins of Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Turbo, Rise of the Guardians, Rio 2, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Ice Age: Continental Drift, and many others, too, never saw a theatrical release.

None have earned ever opened to impressive numbers, nor have they ever earned more than ¥3 billion in the market, often considered the box office hit milestone.

Until now. Minions is the first imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film that is going to be an actual box office hit in the market, with an opening above the ¥500 million mark and undoubtedly a final total over ¥3 billion, if not ¥4 billion+.

Biggest Imported Non-Disney/Pixar Animated Opening Weekends (1998-)

¥550.0 million [Est.] - Minions (2015)
¥363.8 million - Shrek the Third (2007)
¥336.5 million - Despicable Me 2 (2013)
¥301.8 million - Madagascar (2005)
¥284.2 million - Shrek 2 (2004)
¥235.8 million - Despicable Me (2010)
¥224.6 million - Chicken Run (2000)
¥223.9 million - Kung Fu Panda (2008)
¥218.8 million - Shark Tale (2004)
¥200.3 million - Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)

Everything else opened below ¥200 million.

The race at the top of the box-office is another close one this weekend, but I'm pretty confident in predicting Attack on Titan - Part 1 coming out on top, at least in gross. Admissions, however, are another story... estimates have Minions around 475,000 and Attack on Titan - Part 1 around 460,000.

This opening isn't surprising for Attack on Titan - Part 1, it was expected to see a big start (which is currently very similar debut to the first Gantz and the first-half sequel to Rurouni Kenshin), and become one of the highest-grossing live-action films of 2015.

The two-part live-adaptation of the mega-popular Attack on Titan series is one of Japan's most-expensive productions ever, and set a domestic record with over 1,000 filmmakers on the production. Part 1 is set to roll out in 83 territories later this year/early next year, including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macao, and the Philippines this month.

Minions coming is so high is very surprising, though. Its estimated debut is higher than most Disney/Pixar releases, and by far the biggest for a non-Disney/Pixar imported animated release. There wasn't really anything for parents and children to see this Summer, outside of Inside Out which is skewing a bit older, so Minions is going to take advantage of this in a big way and could have a long-run with Obon Festival approaching.

All the holdovers performed nicely in the face of two big openers, and with the boost from Saturday being the first of the month (discount day):

-Hero 2 is the most impressive, completely turning around the downward spiral the sequel appeared to be in and revives its hopes of reaching the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone.

-The Boy and the Beast continues its nice run, and still looks likely to hit ¥6 billion+ ($50 million+), if not ¥7 billion (~$60 million). It's still the film to beat this Summer.

-Inside Out is also performing nicely, though its performance has been a bit overshadowed by continuing to trail The Boy and the Beast, and it'll now be overshadowed by Minions' overperformance, too. I wouldn't rule out it still outgrossing Minions, since it should still exceed ¥4 billion ($30 million+), but they're going to be very close.

-Terminator Genisys is still on track to exceed ¥3 billion ($25 million), and should finish almost on par with its predecessor's ¥3.32 billion finish. It's had a pretty solid performance in Japan compared to the U.S and other territories.

-Avengers: Age of Ultron will soon exceed ¥3 billion ($25 million), too, and still has a shot at hitting ¥3.5 billion (~$30 million), also nearly on par with its predecessor's ¥3.61 billion finish. It'll become the 5th highest-grossing Marvel/DC film ever, behind the original Spider-Man trilogy and its own predecessor.

Usual Locations - Weekend Admissions (43% of Market)

215,069 (N/A) - Attack on Titan - Part 1 (NEW)
203,473 (N/A) - Minions (NEW)

114,295 (-01%) - Hero 2 (Week 3)

98,655 (-02%) - Inside Out (Week 3)
48,012 (-18%) - Terminator Genisys (Week 4)
45,826 (-27%) - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (Week 3)
32,897 (-22%) - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 5)

Attack on Titan - Part 1 wins the weekend at the usual locations, though Minions proved to be a much bigger threat than anyone predicted. And if the latter played well enough outside of the usual locations, namely at Aeon Cinemas (strong for kid/family releases), there's a chance it'll rank #1 over the weekend in admissions. I doubt it comes in at #1 in gross, though, even with a possible admissions victory.

The Top 3 holdovers all see either 1 or 2% drops and are even closer now than they were last weekend. Hero 2's 1% drop is particularly impressive, given how it's legs up to this point have been mediocre. Quite the turn-a-around as Obon Festival draws near, and it definitely needed this.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates shortly.

At the Sunday mid-day point, Minions has a 11,000 advantage over Attack on Titan, and should increase that lead by another 2,000-3,000 before the evening showings begin. I don't think the latter will be able to make up the difference during the evening/night, though it should end up trailing by less than 10,000, and combined with its 21,000 victory yesterday, that should assure it wins the weekend in both admissions and gross.

This is a much closer race than many were expecting, with possibly fewer than 10,000 admissions separating them at the usual locations over the weekend. Minions will probably come in second place, but it's about to achieve the biggest opening weekend for a non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film by a considerable margin.

Awesome, thanks Corpse! By the way, how well do you think The Little Prince will perform since the property seems quite popular in Japan or so I've heard?

>Attack on Titan - Part 1 delivered the biggest opening day at the usual locations, in terms of admissions, for any live-action film this year. However, with tickets being 40% off for the day, it's unlikely to have earned the biggest opening day of the year for a live-action film in terms of gross.

Distributor Toho reported that it also beat last year's opening day admissions of Godzilla by 94%. It's also been announced that the film will be released in 83 territories, which includes Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Philippines, and Australia later this month.

It's an impressive start, and based on Saturday's results, I'd project ¥600-700 million / 450,000-500,000 admissions over the weekend.

>Minions also posted a very strong Saturday. Again, while it's boosted by the discount day, the number is very impressive.

It'll probably hold fairly well tomorrow, too, being a kid/family film, so it's going to make the battle atop the box office this weekend very close in ticket sales since it, too, should be aiming for 450,000+ admissions over the weekend. I don't think it'll open at #1 in terms of gross, however, because of the much lower avg. ticket price it's going to have from skewing quite young.

I'm going to project ¥550-600 million ($4.4-4.7 million) / 450,000-500,000 admissions over the weekend based on its Saturday results. This will earn it the title of biggest opening weekend for an imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film ever, and by quite a large margin, too!

>All the holdovers performed nicely, even if Pokemon dropped despite the discount day.

And nice number for Hero 2. Maybe it can hold off The Boy and the Beast and Inside Out over the weekend? They'll be in a close race again this weekend (last weekend, only 30,000 admissions separated their overall weekend ranking).
