Harsh drop for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Hope it can recover in the upcoming weeks. Can it still compete for the yearly crown?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (08/04-05)
I see now that the drop, largely due to seating/showtime cuts due to all the new openers, was also a result of losing much of its lucrative IMAX screens. It is still a strong contender for the #1 spot of 2018.

The upcoming weekdays (August 06-10) will probably be down a little more than expected compared to last week, but next weekend (August 11-12) will be strong. It's the weekend before Obon Festival begins, and a lot of films will see minimal drops (sub-20%) and even potential increases (the younger skewing films). And then the following weekdays (August 13-17) will be humongous due to Obon Festival.

The difference between Code Blue and MI6 ended up being quite big. Was that the difference of Sunday Corpse?

It should be noted that SHOPLIFTERS had a $7m debut in China...

It should be noted, but in the China Box Office thread, not in here.

I think its fine to be noted in both threads. The OS gross from Shoplifters and in general the increasing presence of Japanese movies in Chinese market is notable.

Yeah. It was a near tie on Saturday between the two, but Code Blue had a stronger Sunday.

Weekend Actuals do have them a little closer than estimates, though, but I'm waiting until later this evening to post them when the rest of the Top 10 is available.

>Code Blue repeats atop the box-office, but it does drop slightly higher in its sophomore frame than other major domestic live-action films. However, its two-week total is higher than every domestic live-action film ever, thanks to the Friday start and the release being in the heart of Summer. The next week weeks will be very strong, especially when Obon Festival begins, and it's still very much on course to reach ¥8 billion ($70 million+) and become a #1 contender of 2018.

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout has to settle for a second place debut, but its opening weekend is 11% higher than both Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol. The sixth-entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise sold an impressive 450,315 admissions over the weekend frame across 638 screens. Since opening on Friday, its 3-day admissions reached 619,507 admissions -- 14% above Rogue Nation's 3-day admissions. The Mission: Impossible series continues to be one of the most consistent and successful franchises, and Fallout will very likely exceed the ¥5 billion (~$45 million) blockbuster milestone once again.

>Incredibles 2 did end up underwhelming a bit, coming in slightly below the standard opening for a Pixar film in the market. The family superhero flick sold 331,697 admissions over the weekend frame on 432 screens. However, the film opened ahead of the weekend last Wednesday, and brought its 5-day admissions up to 750,000. It's still difficult to project where it's headed thanks to the rare Wednesday release, and its so-so weekend, but it should at least reach the ¥4 billion (~$35 million) milestone.

>My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, for some reason, hasn't had its weekend frame figures released yet, so its weekend gross above is a placeholder until it's released (I'll also be using an estimated number of admissions for the weekend frame until that's released, too). Since opening on Friday, though, the original animated film based on the popular manga/anime sold an impressive 401,542 admissions. The first one-million moviegoers are receiving a manga tie-in a part of a giveaway, so 40.2% of those have been handed out after three days.

>Kamen Rider Build: Be the One debuts in fifth place, selling 213,166 admissions over the weekend across 297 screens. The opening is a little above the typical Kamen Rider release in recent years, and topped last August's release by 4%. These films are always very frontloaded, holiday period coming up or not, and it'll probably just barely get above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>One Cut of the Dead makes a very surprising appearance in the tenth place position. The critically acclaimed film had been playing at just 2 locations since opening in June, and due to regular sell-outs for weeks, expanded to 9 locations this weekend and did exceptionally well. There are now plans to expand it further following its ranking in the top 10, so this may not be the last time we'll see it charting.

The aggregated top 10 ended up exceeding ¥3 billion, making it just the sixteenth weekend to do so since 1998 (chart edited a few posts up), but did ultimately come in lower than expected due to a couple openers debut a little lower than expected, and most of the holdovers experiencing harsh drops.

Didn't realize that JW2 is so close to the yearly crown. Code Blue is also giving it a fight with strong weekdays though I feel like it will end up #3 in this race.

A $2.6m 4th week and it's only at $51.7m, yet you think it has enough in the tank to compete for the yearly crown, Corpse? which is currently almost $80m. I know how Japanese box office works, but it never ceases to amaze me how my doubt resurfaces time and time again when looking at the low numbers but high expected totals.

Weekdays are where the money is at which are currently very strong due to school vacation. Also Obon festival week is coming soon, one of the biggest BO weeks in Japan. For instance look at last week's weekdays JW2 ended up doing $4m+ over weekdays

Incredibles 2 went from potentially being a contender for the 2018 yearly crown to selling more tickets than just IO and the 3 Pixar bombs. This isn't "a bit underwhelming".

Not like it bothers me that much. Thanks to Japan, Frozen is a near lock to remain the #1 WW animated movie.

After the record OW domestically, I really thought Incredibles 2 would take the WW animated record. But it looks like the gap between Frozen and Incredibles 2 in Japan will be even larger than the gap between the two domestically (a gap of over $200 million). The OS run for Incredibles 2 has been kind of disappointing. Given its event status, $750-800 million OS should have been in the cards.

Well, it is still making money, and it hasn't opened in Turkey, Scandinavia, Italy, and Germany yet. It's going to be good for at least $600 million non-US, so $1.2 billion worldwide. Less than $100m behind Frozen.

You have to take into account that movies with OS grosses above 700M usually manage that thanks to a big help from China+Japan.

I2 stands at 465M OS after a 19M weekend. Should reach 530/540 from current markets (Japan will strenghten the multiplier), and 600/620 with the rest (Dory made about 70M combined from the same remaining markets). Let's assume 610M with a 90M China+Japan total (ugh...).
That'd be 520M OS-China-Japan for I2.

Other recent major hits:
Jurassic World 2 > 880M projected total with 330M from China+Japan (assuming a 75M finish in the latter) - meaning 550M OS-China-Japan
Black Panther > 645-(105+15) = 525M OS-C-J
Beauty and the Beast > 760-(110+90) = 560M OS-C-J
Fate of the Furious > 1010-(390+35) = 585M OS-C-J
Despicable Me 3 > 770-(150+70) = 550M OS-C-J
Captain America CW > 745-(180+25) = 540M OS-C-J

Just add the fact that ER managed to get even worse in the last months (especially in LA, where I2 did great) and you see that I2 is perfectly in line with every major blockbuster in the last 2/3 years (even Star Wars barely grossed more than 600M OS-C-J - and of course Infinity War doesn't count). So we just have to blame the key Asia countries for the somehow "modest" OS total (I'd also add South Korea, where the movie just did standard Pixar numbers).

Aside from that, it's sad to see Japan quickly becoming some sort of asian Russia in terms of BO tastes in animation. The minions exploding, Boss Baby becoming a success, local animated films becoming more and more serialized, Pixar struggling, ...

Japan is the only country where American movies don't have an easy time. That's refreshing.

I don't want to quote too much from the recent posts, so I'll just say, don't count Incredibles 2 as a disappointment just yet. If it can get to ¥5 billion and match/exceed the original (¥5.26 billion), I'd consider it a success.

Its opening weekend was underwhelming, but its having some very impressive weekdays so far. Despite being a distant third place over the weekend, it was a strong #2 on both Monday and Tuesday.

I'll post daily estimates soon.

It's not the only market, probably the one which is tracked properly here
