Release Date: May 28, 2010 Studio: New Line Cinema (Warner Bros. Pictures) Director: Michael Patrick King Cast: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Chris Noth Genre: Comedy, Romance Rating: R Premise: Set to be released in theaters next Memorial Day weekend, "Sex and the City 2" is the follow-up to the first film, which pulled in more than $415 million worldwide. The original film was inspired by the phenomenally popular, award-winning HBO series based on the writings of Candace Bushnell. View teaser trailer here _________________________________________________________________________________ Well the first teaser has been just released and I already feel this film. While it does not interest me personally at all, it looks like it will again have great appeal to the fans of the series and adult female audiences in general. The first film opened to $57,038,404 (5th-biggest R-rated opening ever) and ended up with $152,647,258 which makes it the 22nd-biggest R-rated movie ever. For a direct adaptation of a TV series (with the same stars as in the original series) that was a tremendous performance. After the initially frontloaded opening weekend it actually held up well during its later run. However it was helped by the lack of films aimed at women until the release of Mamma Mia! in July. Solid DVD sales confirm the film's good WoM. The sequel will have Prince of Persia in its opening weekend which will generally appeal to different demographics but should also have wide general appeal and deliver a big opening as well. Moreover, it'll face direct competition in its 2nd weekend already with the Katherine Heigl/Ashton Kutcher comdy Killers. Add that to the sequel factor and you'll see that legs probably won't be nearly as good. However good marketing and solid WoM from the first sould assure it a big opening weekend once again, especially since it has the Memorial Day weekend. My predictions: Opening Weekend (4-day) - $78 million Total Gross - $160 million |

This film's gross will not be as high as the first film's. From my vantage point, the anticipation for the second film is much lower than it was for the first. Opening weekend: $39 million Final gross: $110 million |

Umm... fans of this show will show up for this, no matter what, thus, a higher opening than the first. |

This film held relatively well considering it was supposed to be really frontloaded. The audience seemed to like it. Adjusted to next year, the original would be at: $61.88 m/$165.61 m I see $85.0 m for the 4-day weekend, and $180 m total. |

This will do "fabulous" and isn't likely to gross less than the first. The fans are going to turn out in droves, and in general, we, the fans, liked/loved the first. This isn't likely to gross less than the first, and if it did it wouldn't be by much. I'm glad they've released a teaser now. Hopefully it will be attached to IT'S COMPLICATED or something this weekend. |

That same type of anticipation is not there this time around. Is it possible the film still could gross higher than the first? Perhaps. However, this seems like a sequel/continuation not much of the fanbase really asked for. |

Chip Munkington wrote: Because you know the fanbase? I watched the film during its first weekend of release. I watched the television series. I actually LOVE the first film. It seems like you think I am a Sex and The City hater, and I clearly am not. From what I have noted of others in the fanbase, the anticipation level is not nearly as high for this as the first film. The first film had a sense of closure that was missing from the ending of the series. The sequel is kind of like, "Okay. Another film...what else can be done?" |

Why, I mean the history of just about all well liked sequels is they increase in the 2nd film (barring special cases - NATM fell from moving from Christmas to summer, Narnia adapted a lesser known book, etc.) There's no indication a female based blockbuster sequel will perform differently than usual male targeted sequels like X-Men, Transformers, etc. |

I also predict an increase but not a huge one like you. I think the fans liked the film but it wasn't considered amazing... $225 million is a HUGE increase. I mean National Treasure was VERY well-liked, no? And its sequel had a worse increase than that, so... |

Drop off, the first film had the event feel to it. Not only was it a long wait since the show ended, but also was one of the biggest events for the film and fanbase, the Wedding. This is just, hey we're back, happy, and going on vacation it seems, I think Ocean's 12 actually would be a good basis. I dont think it will do bad, but I don't see it opening as high as the first one. It should do well though. 44 open/ 110-130 close. |

The sequel is not an 'event' like the first one was. |

The sequel is not an 'event' like the first one was. its still a sequel to a film that had good WOM, the opening will increase by at least 15% IMO. |

What about Charlie's Angels and Legally Blond? Besides, the thing to keep in mind is that the Sex and the City moovie was, biologically speaking, a sequel. |

Matrix Revolutions stoned, back in 03 audiences were not going to let films with bad WOM make a ton of undeserved BO $$$$ |

I'd go higher still but depends on how good the trailers look. |
