It was a neck-and-neck race between Phobia 2 and 500 Days of Summer.

Thai horror film Phobia debuted on top for Thursday and Friday but was surpassed by 500 Days for Saturday and Sunday. Front-loadedness and sequel effect kicked in for the latest installment of Thai horror fever brought to by directors the Pang brothers (whose credits included the US release The Messenger and remake The Eye). 500 Days of Summer beat (in nominal dollar) similar releases in the past such as Juno, Eternal Sunshine, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona in OW.

Yes, you are right. They did not direct any section of Phobia 2.

What I was saying in my post was they started bringing in Thai-style horror to the Hong Kong cinema. Not only did they make horror movies, they helped distribute several Thai films either by funding or endorsement. Hence I say they started the Thai horror fever in Hong Kong.

As of Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, Avatar has made HK$80,030,000 (or US$10,330,000). Breaking Titanic's unadjusted record of HK$114,939,000 (or US$14,774,000) is just a matter of days.

Note that out of the 70 screens playing Avatar in Hong Kong, 60 (or 86%) are playing in 3D format, 8 (or 11%) are in 2D format, and 2 (or 3%) are in IMAX format. 3D ticket price has a 60% premium over 2D while IMAX ticket has a 160% premium over 2D.

Day 19 (1/4/2010)

Avatar remained atop in the chart as most school sessions resumed Monday. It dipped 55% to HK$2.02 million; the percentage drop was the smallest among all releases.

Note that out of the 70 screens playing Avatar in Hong Kong, 60 (or 86%) are playing in 3D format, 8 (or 11%) are in 2D format, and 2 (or 3%) are in IMAX format. 3D ticket price has a 60% premium over 2D while IMAX ticket has a 160% premium over 2D. The two IMAX screens accounts for about 15% of the overall business.

Elsewhere on chart, Sherlock Holmes held on to the no. 2 spot, on track to gross HK$20+ million. Kid-friendly Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs dropped more than 80% from Sunday.

Day 22 (1/7/2010)

Avatar added HK$1,819,088 on its 22nd day of release. The total now stands at HK$88,660,000 (US$11,440,000). That's about 77% of Titanic's unadjusted total of $114,940,000. At this pace, Avatar is expected to outgross Titanic next weekend.

Note that 86% of the screens playing Avatar are 3D.

Day 25 (1/10/2010)

For the 3-day weekend from 1/8 - 1/10, Avatar made HK$10,090,000, down 20% from last weekend. The total now stands at HK$98,750,000, edging closer to Titanic's unadjusted HK$114,940,000.

Note that there were 61 screens playing Avatar. Over 86% of the screens were showing the 3D version. The number of showings on Saturday was about 250.

An interesting development has turned up. Out of the handful of theaters still showing Avatar, 2 of them have moved Avatar into bigger theaters as the Chinese New Year has progressed due to high demand. 1 of these has even moved Avatar to its biggest theater starting on Monday.

Hmm why the hell did they move Avatar from Hong Kong all together so early ?? As par as I remember it was still doing well ? Is this trend similar to the China Massacre earlier or what ?

8 new movies were released this week. Add to that, special showings of Wolfman, Hot Summer Days, Precious, along with the fact that no theater has more than 7 screens per location and you'll understand why Avatar was cut so early. In the more predominantly Chinese areas, it didn't do so well (minus the morning shows which did amazing). I still don't understand, however, why they cut the morning shows which did well. Most of them sold out hours in advance in the biggest theaters.

I am completely surprised by that hold by Avatar. Maybe I underestimated the IMAX effect, but I thought with the decreased showtimes and being cut altogether in most places that it would suffer a heavy drop.

Obviously, 72 Tenants of Prosperity and All's Well Ends Well 2010 played much better in more Asian-centric areas. 72 Tenants, in particular, definitely relied on its movie setting along with the Chinese New Year theme. Very good for Percy Jackson.

In my opinion, that is a terrible opening for True Legend. After getting tons of promotion, it not only opens behind Avatar's 9th week but loses to Valentine's Day in screen averages. Speaking of V-Day, another solid opener. It had a stranglehold over True Legend in the business areas here...not surprised it opened close to True Legend.

Princess and the Frog bombed here...even with 2 different versions.

Wolfman and Hot Summer Days were both special screenings. Precious has been getting one show on Saturday/Sunday at one theater for the past 2 weeks...it is set to open this week.

With this, it looks like the final death knell for Avatar.

Darn Hongkong for cutting the theaters of Avatar, this should teach them a lesson. Princess and the Frog another huge disappointment to a very good movie. Though the PTA was high I think VD will fall next week.

Percy was surprising to open good in HK though action-oriented-family movies tend to do well in Asian markets

Avatar is still doing good business in the two IMAX theaters there.

It was normal for theaters to shed screens as there was a rush of new releases during Chinese New Year.

It ranks in the top 5 in admission on the daily chart after the holidays (http://www.wmoov.com).
