Archangel - how does that compare with other films? Is that the Wednesday or the Thursday figure? If it's a Thursday figure, then it's definately a worry because the opening day records held by LOTRs and New Moon are around the $4m-$5m mark.

Re: Avatar (INTL.)
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/enterta ... ening.html"Avatar" will likely gross about $80 million from Friday through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada, according to several people who have seen pre-release public surveys. Thanks to largely positive reviews, however, the people said the movie could easily outperform what polling currently indicates and end up even higher. People close to the studio said executives are concerned about managing expectations for their costly picture going into the weekend. Fox's domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder said he expects the movie to open to $50 million to $60 million. Overseas, where the James Cameron-directed 3-D spectacle is opening this week in 106 countries, including every major market except Italy, Japan and China, it will likely sell more than $100 million worth of tickets and could easily collect around $150 million.======== http://www.screendaily.com/news/distrib ... 80.articleFew films arrive surrounded with as much anticipation as James Cameron’s 3D epic sci-fi adventure and Fox executives will be seeking to capitalise on the positive early word to make a killing in the first weekend and should cross the $2bn mark in overseas ticket sales by the end of next week if not before. Cameron’s long-gestating opus will play on a total of 17,163 international screens, 5,354 of them 3D, of which 81 are IMAX 3D. Avatar arrives on 13,737 screens in the day-and-date territories, of which 3,935 are 3D, 60 of them on IMAX.Results are certain to be strong virtually everywhere, with the major numbers coming from France on December 16, followed a day later by Germany, Russia, Mexico, Australia, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Holland, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Thailand. Avatar touches down on December 18 in the UK, Spain, Brazil, Sweden, Taiwan, Austria and India. It opens in Japan opens next weekend and in China in January

Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Doing quite well on Friday here in Melbourne, sales are stronger than yesterday evening.
I see it doing something like $1m (Wed) + $2.5m (Thu) + $3m (Fri) + $3.5m (sat) + $2.5m (sun). = AUD$12.5m (5-Day). This is huge alright.

LadiesMan217 wrote: Quote: Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- “Avatar,” James Cameron’s 3-D science-fiction movie, is set to break Russia’s box office record, judging by viewer interest and screen bookings, industry research group Booker’s Bulletin said.
“It will definitely surpass the $50 million record,” said Boris Babushkin, editor of Moscow-based Booker’s magazine, by phone today from Yekaterinburg, central Russia.
The movie opened in Moscow last night and will play on a record 1,330 screens across the former Soviet Union, not counting Ukraine and the Baltic states, said Sergei Lavrov, chief statistician at Kinobusiness Today magazine. Lavrov expects “Avatar” to pull in $60 million, mainly from Russia.
News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox and partners Dune Entertainment and Ingenious Film Partners have spent an estimated $380 million to make and market “Avatar,” which was shot using a dual-camera 3-D system that Cameron, 55, invented with partner Vince Pace after the director’s success with “Titanic.” That film, released in 1997, is the all-time top- grossing film with $1.8 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.
Only about 300 of the 1,330 screens that will show “Avatar” in Russia and neighboring countries are equipped for 3-D, which may hurt sales, Lavrov said. The current records for both screens and ticket sales is held by the 2007 domestic comedy “Irony of Fate 2,” which played in 1,100 theaters and grossed more than $49 million, he said. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... wISjdbUdVYLet's talk when it makes this much. Irony of Fate 2 was a fucking phenomenon. 2012 is currently the highest grossing Hollywood live action film and it's gonna finish with around $37+ m, and it was way more appealing than Avatar. The record number of screens doesn't mean anything. IMAX and 3D ticket prices to Avatar were increased, to the point where it becomes from just expensive to really expensive, so I'm not sure many people will take those theaters by storm.

Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Also, Irony Of Fate 2 was a New Year's movie in a New Year's holidays. You can't go better from that. Plus Avatar has Sherlock Holmes on New Year's holidays. That will be really tough to beat.

Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Avatar will certainly hold better than 2012.
First of all the reception is much stronger.
Secondly, in its opening weekend Avatar is going to be very male-drive, but WOM will reach out for women in the following weeks. There's a good chance that on average females will like the movie more, but the marketing just didn't make them that interested.

Anyway, this is solid and has Boxing Day ahead of it which is good. I can't see anything opening on Boxing Day which will affect this greatly. Sherlocke Holmes is the only challenger left overseas.
