Transformers 1 (INTL.) - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=31090&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

2 years after the original smash surprised all to become the undisputed crowd favourite blockbuster of Summer 2007, Transformers returns for more. This time however, the cards are all falling into place and Transformers is hot favourite to take out Summer 2009.

There's no Spiderman, no Pirates nore Shrek...it's all about Transformers. The original had a spectacular run, rising above the smog left over by an intense May 2007 season (which saw 3 movies cross $300m) and a solid June frame capped by strong starts from Fantastic Four 2 and Ratatouille. It still holds the Tuesday record (it's opening day) and has the 8th largest 6-Day take (i.e. it's Tue-Sun) of any movie. Legs were uncharacteristic of a movie of this type, while it didn't actually register a sub 40% drop until it's 7th weekend, it didn't register a drop more than 50% throughout it's run. Also, the latter part of its run saw drops in the 20-30% contributing to a meaty $319,246,193 take. More impressive is the fact that it managed to withstand the onslaught that is Harry Potter 5, Chuck & Larry, Simpsons, Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3. All solid starts.

Transformers 2 opens this time on Wednesday and will be looking to smash all 5-Day records including HP5's top Wednesday of $44,232,338 and Spiderman 2's $152,411,751 Wed-Sun start. The sluggish starts of some of May 2009's blockbuster openings (i.e. Angels&Demons, T4, Night At The Museum 2) surely bodes well for Transformers 2. While I don't expect Transformers to beat TDK's Fri-Tue 5-Day take of $203,773,518....I give Transformers a big a shot to take out ROTS' Thu-Mon take of $172,802,507 (2nd largest 5-Day outright). Transformers 2 only needs to contend with only 2 other blockbusters, Ice Age 3 over the Independence Day weekend and Harry Potter 6 in it's 4th. Not so much of a worry considering both target familes and younger audiences. The key here will be whether it matches the fun and excitement of T1 or will it just be a rehash and doesn't really take the audiences anywhere.

On the international side, Transformers was a mixed bag by uber blockbuster terms. It didn't play that well in Europe and misfired badly in Japan (out of all places). Asia was the key contributor, Transformers was Top 3 in most markets and registered impressive tallies in South Korea ($51,511,860 - it's biggest gross and #1 foreign pic of all-time) and China ($37,218,823 and #2 foreign pic behind Titanic). It's final tally of $388,429,551 was #6 in 2007 and made up 54.9% of it's Worldwide gross of $708.3m.

Transformers 1 had a staggered release, opening in just 10 markets. It didn't hit 50 until week 6 where it started to unspool in Europe. Transformers 2 is wasting no time this year, opening in almost every market on the same weekend as the US. UK and Japan actually receives T2 one weekend before any other market. They may have learnt their lesson with Japan (T1 opened almost 1 month after the US bow). So far this year, Wolverine opened to $73,154,892 in 101 markets, Star Trek made $35.5m over 54, Angels & Demons hit $104.3m in 96 and Night At The Museum 2 with $50.1m over 93. T2 will probably top all of this and should be aiming for a Top 10 start (barrier currently stands at $110m by War of the Worlds).

Don't expect a Pirates 2, Matrix Reloaded or The Dark Knight style increase here in the foreign markets. Yes, they seem to be globetrotting more this time, but fundamentally i don't think the material itself translates that well into European markets where the focus is not always on straight out action and explosion. $400m should be a target but is by no means a lock. The question here is whether the Asian grosses can really increase that much further and whether it can overcome the foreign exchange disadvantage (compared to 2007 and 2008). I'm thinking it's going to be hard but being a sequel to a surprise smash, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and leave it at $400m.

Lord of the Rings: ROTK - $377,027,325 + $741,861,654 = $1,118,888,979

Box Office Tracking: Transformers 2 Could Take $175 Million In First Five Days

http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/06/01/box ... five-days/

Rival movie studios are claiming that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is tracking to open huge at the box office. According to Nikki Finke’s sources, the movie might open with a high $175 million 5-day opening when the big giant robots are unleashed on Wednesday June 24th. If this number turns out to be true, it could be the second biggest 5-day opening of all time. Which film claims the 5-Day record? Answer after the jump.

The Dark Knight claims the #1 spot with $203.7 million. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith holds the #2 record with $172.8 million, with a mid-May 2005 release. The first Transformers opened on a Monday night, and made $133.2 in its first five days of release (which due to the strange release date, doesn’t include a $22.1 million Sunday)

Paramount will likely deny reports of high-level tracking to better manage expectations. Opening weekend is key, and surpassing tracking expectations is very important. Is it possible that rival studios are leaking unrealistically high expectations to water down Transformer’s box office victory? Yeah. But the end of June, early July is a hot time period for Hollywood releases: Spider-Man 2 made $152 million in its first five days on the same week in 2004. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest pulled in $152 in its first 5 days in July 2006. It is very possible that Transformers 2 will hit $160 million+.

Can anyone remember where the World Premiere was for the first movie....wasn't it South Korea???.....and that market alone delivered $50m+.

This year, the world premiere was in Japan.....good omen?  At least they're opening in Japan first...could do mammoth figures seeing as nearly every other foreign release has performed lacklusterly so far.

Oh and don't get me started on how good the UK release is this time....anything is better than opening up against Simpsons (which made $30m in the first week and trounched Transformers).

I doubt it will do that well in japan. I dont see appeal for Americanized version in japan. If anything hollywood films have been on a decline in japan and I think TF2 will make less than TF1. I think HP6 will do well as the series is really popular. Even that series has dropped with every sequel.

Indeed, HP5 is the lowest grosser in the franchise, less than $90m as well.

I've got a feeling Transformers might do better this time around, not mammoth figures but should do better than the originals $30m odd gross.

I don't have stats on how much T1 opened to on its first day, but this is at least encouraging.

Playing in just two key foreign markets, Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from director Michael Bay premiered No. 1 over the weekend on the international circuit, rolling up $20 million from 846 locations.

The sci-fi/action sequel to "Transformers," Bay's 2007 smash -- which grossed $389 million overseas -- opened No. 1 in the U.K. ($14.1 million from 517 screens) and in Japan ($5.8 million from 329 sites).

The explosive saga of shape-shifting robots co-starring Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox outperformed the original in the U.K. by 71%, and by 13% in Japan, Paramount said. "Revenge of the Fallen" opens worldwide on Wednesday.

Ok,

Looks like there's not going to be a monster turnaround in Japan (not that that was likely); though solid grosses in the UK (the original had previews grossing a total of around $18m for the weekend).

So yeah, there's definately an improvement (must also factor in the exchange rates)....but it's no Shrek 2 or Pirates 2 type breakthrough.

I think this one will be more front loaded in both the markets. I doubt it will even hit TF1 number in japan while it may barely squeak past 1st one in UK.

Actually yen is lot strong now than during TF1's release. So that makes its Japanese OW even bigger disappointment.

Current rate is 96.7844 per dollar. During 2007 august it averaged 116.733. So that means it appreciated around 20%.

You would expect a substantial increase in the UK because the first opened against The Simpsons (in what must have been the most stupid scheduling ever). Japan is quite dissapointing. You would think it would be near Titanic levels there.

T2 opened to half of what Terminator 4 made in its first weekend with previews.

It's same situation as King Kong.

Both King Kong and Transformers 1 did really well in South Korea though....

UNITED KINGDOM - Opening Weekend

Solid opening over the regular 3-Day frame, however this is nothing special. T1's 3-Day was almost $10m, so consideration inflation and what not, this hasn't really expanded on the original that much.

A note: the Transformers are indeed Japanese, but the bulk of the poparity the series had is American. They talk about this on the Animated movie DVD

So basically the first movie really wasn't that well liked. It made all that money on dvd due to fanbase and kids.

I can totally see TF3 doing sub less than 700 million worldwide.

Well, unlike Pirates or Shrek the first had a fanbase as well, which would mean Pirates and Shrek (two films many have compared Transformers to) had much more room to expand their audience.

It's doubtful Transformers 2 will see significant increases except in the markets that are seeing rapid growth.
