Post 2009: biggest increase since 1989!
Thanks to the box-office craziness that were, Paul Blart, Taken, F&F, Star Trek, Up, The Hangover, The Proposal, Transformers 2, District 9, Basterds, Cloudy, Couples Retreat, Paranormal Activity, New Moon, The Blind Side and a few more others to come, 2009 total gross is going over 10B by at least 500m. This would mean a 9% increase from last year, the biggest year-to-year increase since 2002 and the biggest year in terms of admissions since 2006.

However, as long as December 2009 DOESN'T dissapoint like December 2008, 2009 could break 10.6B, making an increase almost 10% which would mean the biggest increase since 2001 and a possible first double-digit year-to-year increase since 1989! Extremely impressive year overall, and one of the three best years of the 2000s. :thumbsup:

Concur. There's a good chance 2009 will have over a 10% increase from 2008, which would make it the biggest increase ever since 1989, one of the most important years in BO history.

You're incredibly overrated and and if they made a Pixar film about you it would gross less than The Good Dinosaur.

Wait, I just realized I miscalculated and overestimated my projection. The 10% increase is still very achiveable though.

Interesting that we have this thread and you say the above. The 99 years have been quite impressive;

1939 - Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Goodbye Mr Chips (biggest film of all time plus other memorables)
1959 - Ben Hur, Sleeping Beauty (two of the biggest blockbusters of all time)
1969 - Butch Cassidy, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider Vs Paint Your Wagon, Herbie the Love Bug and Paint your Wagon (the changing of the guard and moving towards the new Hollywood)
1989 - Batman, Indy, Ghostbusters, Lethal Weapon, BTTF (the birth of the megaplex)
1999 - Star Wars Ep 1, Sixth Sense, Austin Powers, American Pie, American Beauty, The Mummy, TS2 (one of the most iconic years in history plus big BO)

So at the start of the year I thought the streak would be over as the year seemed to offer very little - but WOW it sure did deliver!!!!

Well December seems pretty strong with Chipmunks 2, Avatar and Sherlock all looking like guaranteed big hits. Nine could also make a lot of money I guess, I'm not really that familiar with the popularity of the musical.

And Princess and The Frog of course looks like a hit, as does Old Dogs I think, and both could have solid legs carrying into December. Ninja Assassin should at least open pretty well.

Lovely Bones and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus could both perform on the upper range of their potential, thanks to the names attached.

To me all that looks like a stronger December than usual. Three guaranteed event movies and a few flicks with strong hit potential.

A million thanks to Avatar. It's now barely going to make it but I honestly thought this would be hard after my stupid miscalculation.

2009 just needs to beat 2001's 9.81% increase over 2000 to make it and it looks to finish with over 10.575B earning an outstanding 9.85% increase over 2008's 9.631B gross. It's going to be the biggest year-to-year increase since two decades ago when 1989 rose by 12.9% from 1988!
