It was never that popular in the UK. Plus, it opens the same weekend as Fast and Furious over here.

Just the Top 10 based on estimates, but Dragonball debuts at No.3.

Yatterman and Doraemon must have had some mighty second weekend holds too, great news. Unfortunately, it appears 20th Century Boys 2 and Mamma Mia are now out of the Top 10 for now though, so tracking them becomes a real pain in the ass.

Blah, Dragonball is even worse because the 3m everyone was talking about was because it had an additional day added to it's actual weekend gross, that being 2.6m, and even with it having a long weekend, it still wouldn't have opened to No.1.... And good lord, it's theatre count was massive. Fail.

Very nice for Yatterman, and Departures may have a shot at 60m.

Mad2 did ok. And held well this weekend too:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan ... =12&p=.htm

Dragonball is an epic flop. 60% drop, totally horrendous for the J-BO, it'll be out of the Top 10 next weekend, and probably wont even reach 8m.

Valkyrie opened well, while Bedtime Stories opened poorly.

Yattaman still No.1, nice hit there and the Departures is getting closer and closer to 60m.

I read that for the Japanese market, Bedtime Stories' opening is actually good since it's about six times bigger than Click's opening, heh.

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box Office (09) Mar. 21-22 (Dragonball *snort*)

That is perhaps the most ignorant comment you'd ever posted, shawman!

Twilight opened on less than 200 screens (the equivalent of about 1750 here since Hollywood films tend to get 50/100 more screens than local films) and managed a healthy 3500 PTA, and wasn't even going to be released in Japan until a the decision was made earlier this year. Not a bad opening, just pretty average.

And saying any country is "smarter" than another based on what films they decide to see is ridiculous. You can't compare people or countries like that.

The Dark Knight grossed a pathetic 14m in Japan last year, and Iron Man didn't even reach 10m, meaning Indy IV grossed nearly 3x more than TDK and Iron Man COMBINED. Does that now make them dumber than the others? No.

They dont seem to like comic book movies. Outside SM series I have not seen any film do well there.

Batman was never popular in OS markets and I Dont see it breaking out everywhere. It flopped in Russia/Japan/Italy.

Can't wait to see Red Cliff II's debut numbers. Red Cliff was a big hit last year and finished 4th (5th now since The Departues won Best Foreign Picture, which caused it surge past 60m right now) last year.

That may just be the most screens any film has receieved in Japan opening weekend. I don't recall any film with so many last year. It caused Red Cliff: Part II to have an average PTA, but it opened higher than Red Cliff: Part 1 (6.5m) and was released on a Friday it appears, so Part II had an extra day (explaining the 8.7m total) and it's 2-Day was softened a bit.

Should be a 50m+ film.

The Opening for Crows Zero 2 is also very strong.

Yeah, and I wouldnt be surprised if Part II beats Part I with that sort of second weekend hold. And I doubt there were any holidays since all the other drops are normal. The massive screen count is going to result in a very long run as well. Wow, Part II is 280 minutes.

Part I:
China - 47m, Japan - 53m, South Korea -10m

Part II:
China - 38m, Japan - 22m, South Korea - 13m

Just two weeks now in Japan, and films are very leggy there, and I'm almost positive the second weekend total is higher than that of Part I's. I'll need to look it up.

Xia, any idea of Part II finished it's run in China?

Red Cliff II sees another excellent drop. The total increased by 10m for the entire week, and 50m is a sure thing at this point. 60m can probably happen too.

Raven Chaser is also doing very, very well. It'll top 30m easily.
