Are these HP numbers from BOM, though?

No, Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan).

They were posted on page 7 of this thread.

BOM is lower on most things because they stop tracking films before their run is even close to being over.

Take HP6 this year for example. It was still doing triple digit weekends when they stopped releasing numbers for it, so it's total is stuck at 83m at BOM. Rookies being another, it was still doing well when they stopped tracking it too, at 87.9m.

Yeah I know I was just wondering if those were BOM numbers and the actual ones were higher then HP would still be on a downwards trend. That's why I asked.

Ohh, I see.

It's kind of a shame for Potter in the region. The last three films have barely grossed 50% of what the original had. At least it seems to be stable now though.

According to HR Up made $7 million in Japan! (funny as we talked just about that number here recently).

I assume $50 million will happen then?

Actually HP6 dropped from HP5 in yen. Dont forget yen appreciated 25%+ between Hp5-hp6 release time frame. That helped Hp6 dollar gross. Assuming exchange rate stays flat(dollar is appreciating recently), it would be interesting to see how DH1 does.

That's very impressive for Up. HR's article isn't exactly right though, it's not the second biggest opening for an animated film (unless they mean Hollywood or Pixar or something) because Pokemon opens to about $9m yearly (the last three I believe, the franchise is actually growing), and all three Miyazaki films this decade opened over $10m (13/14m). Wall-E "only" opened to about $4.5m. $50m should be a lock I would say. Using the same multiplier that Wall-E received, it would make $70m+ which would be good enough for 3rd of the year I think. If it ends up with 50/60, it'll be interesting to see where it places in the Top 5 because Pokemon the 12th Movie, Twentieth Century Boys Chapter III, and Red Cliff II are all around that level. This Is It would have ended up around there as well if it was expanded past 4 weeks.

If Up does end up well over $50m, it'll likely save 2009 from dropping from 2008, too.

2 NEW Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider W & Decade Movie Taisen 2010 (JPN.) Toei 1

9 3 No More Cry !!! (JPN.) Toho 5
10 NEW Snow Prince (JPN.) Shochiku 1

Looks like everyone waited for mid Dec. to release their films. The past 3/4 weeks only saw one opener.

I read Up did 5.6m, which is a very strong hold (it made 6.9m last weekend), so this week has to be one of the strongest of the year with Kamen Rider (70's superhero series) and One Piece (biggest manga of all time, over 175m copies sold) besting it. One Piece had a big tie in, the first 1.5m viewers receive(ed) the 0th Volume of the Manga, so it's gonna have a huge opening it seems.

Quote:
One Piece Film Strong World, the 10th One Piece anime film, opened with 1.038 billion yen (about US$11.7 million) this past weekend . By comparison, Ponyo took in 1.025 billion yen (US$11.55 million) during its opening weekend last year. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opened on 844 screens in Japan this year with 990 million yen (US$11.2 million).

One Piece Film Strong World opened on 188 screens throughout Japan. 68 of those screens had sold-out showings throughout the weekend. The film's per-screen average was 5.52 million yen (US$62,200) — the record for a nationwide release in Japan.

On the first day, the film made 553 million yen (US$6.24 million), and it made 485 million yen (US$5.47 million) on the second day. In all, the film was seen 820,000 times. Part of the reason for the huge audiences was the One Piece Volume 0 manga that was given to the first attendees. Toei has decided to add another printing of 1 million copies.

Absolutely monstrous, and only on 188 screens vs Ponyo's near 500 and over 800 for HP6, 62,000 pta, a new record all around.

How many intersections did he have to cross before finding the end of the line???

The tenth film? Why'd it suddenly become so massive?

I think because fans have been waiting a few years for this one, and it's not a normal anime movie. It actually goes with the canon of the manga/anime, and apparently several months (or years) of each was set up to lead up to this films release. The creator worked on it for the first time, too. Also, the first 1.5m viewers will receive volume 0 of the manga. They are apparently printing more (1m according to the quote above) due to the demand. The manga also become the biggest selling manga of all time this year. More copies have been sold than even the population of the country (176m vs 128m). After reading a forum for a bit today, there was years of hype surrounding this one. It may even be a 100m contender.

I was going to start this manga/anime weeks/months ago, and now I'm even more curious.

One Piece Film Strong World, the 10th anime film based on Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga, opened at #1 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's Japanese box office chart during the December 12-13 weekend. According to Variety and Rentrak Theatrical, it earned US$11,692,830 on 188 screens for an unsually high per-screen average of US$62,196 — the record for a nationwide release in Japan after the passing of fire safety laws. The film's opening weekend box office total is more than what Ponyo or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince garnered in their first two days in Japanese theaters.

Part of the reason for the huge audiences was the One Piece Volume 0 manga that was given to the first attendees. Toei has decided to add another printing of 1 million copies for the manga. Unlike previous One Piece films, Oda had personally overseen the new film's production.

Up is well on it's way to 50+, should cross it without any trouble. It's third weekend will probably be higher than Wall-E's first.

2012 is still doing well, 40m is possible, very nice.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (09) Dec. 12-13th, record weekend.
It'll be really interesting to see the run One Piece: Strong World has this winter seeing as the manga is exploding right now.

Quote:
All 56 volumes of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga ranked on Oricon's chart of the top 200 manga books for the week of December 7-13 in Japan. Shueisha just published 2.85 million copies of volume 56 alone on December 4 — the largest print run that any Japanese manga has ever had in its first printing.

So far, Shueisha has published over 176 million copies of the books in the series, and 14.7 million of them were sold from November 17, 2008 to November 22, 2009. This made One Piece the top-selling series of 2009. The four top-selling manga books published in 2009 were One Piece volumes 52 to 55. (Volume 56 was not included since it shipped after the survey cutoff date.)

The sales of the manga were boosted this past week by the promotions surrounding the 10th One Piece anime film. Oda personally oversaw One Piece Film Strong World, which opened on December 12. The film earned 1.038 billion yen (about US$11.7 million) this past weekend, which is more than Ponyo or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince garnered in their first two days in Japanese theaters.

Oda confirmed in an Asahi Shimbun article in November that he had planned to end the series in five years and has had the image of the final chapter established in his mind for a long time. However, creating the episodes that lead to that ending has taken longer than he had anticipated. In the manga's 13th year, he would like to say that he is 9/10ths of the way towards the end, but he acknowledged that he is only halfway there.

Viz Media is planning to ship volumes 24 to 53 in North America between January and June of 2010 — or five volumes per month.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... -200-manga

I'm hoping some final figures will be released soon for the box office as a whole. The success of Up, One Piece, the latest Kamen Rider, and Avatar looks poised to do well, should really give 2009 the boost it needs.

Next summer is going to be very fun.

Quote:
While Studio Ghibli is looking forward to stealing the summer box office with its latest animated feature, it'll have a tough time overcoming its competition. It was recently announced that a sequel to the 2003 film Odoru Daisousasen 2 (Bayside Shakedown 2), will be hitting theaters on July 3rd. The last film in the series was one of the largest grossing movies recent history, taking in roughly 17.5 billion yen.

Release Date: July 19th, 2003 (Japan)
Budget: $8,500,000 (Rough Figure)
Opening Weekend: $10,489,418 (Japan, 408 Theaters)
Attendance: 12,700,000 (Japan)
Total: ¥17,350,000,000 / $164,450,000 (Japan, Rough Figure)

Image

Based on the j-drama of the same name, Odoru Daisousen follows the detectives of a Tokyo police precinct, focusing more on the procedural and political aspects of law enforcement, rather than fast paced action. While it's very much a drama at its core, the series had a fair share of humor--don't worry, it's not like Police Academy. While the series originally aired on Fuji Television back in 1997, it has since remained a cult classic, resulting in several movies, multiple spin-offs and specials.

Ghibli's films typically perform well, but Odoru Daisousasen 3 is currently expected to be the highest grossing film of the summer. There's always the chance that another film could be announced which could theoretically trounce both titles, but that wouldn't necesscarily be a bad thing. Either way, I'm sure it's going to be a good year for Japanese cinema.

Non-Miyazaki Ghibli films do well like the article states (the last being Earthsea which grossed $63 million), but no where near what a Miyazaki film grosses (Earthsea had a mixed reception, however). Info on their latest:

Quote:
Studio Ghibli has officially announced their next film and it’s called Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty). The studio, which produces amazing films, will release The Borrower Arrietty next summer. Ghibli World tells us that the film will be an adaptation of the Mary Norton novel, The Borrowers. The original novel tells the story about tiny people who “borrow” things from humans in 1950’s England (you might remember the movie from 1997). However, Studio Ghibli’s take on the story will be set in modern day Tokyo Koganei (home of Studio Ghibli) and will follow the story of 14-year-old Arrietty. This will also be the directorial debut of Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who previously worked as an animator on previous Ghibli films such as Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and Spirited Away.

Bayside Shakedown 3 is a legit contender at $120+ million, IMO.

It'll be very interesting to track it's performance.

Up dropped about 22% for a third weekend of $4.4 million (which is what Wall-E made it's first). It's total is probably in the high 20's now.

Avatar is going to have a 5-Day, opens the 23rd. On Eiga the film is receiving strong searches, being the third most searched for film at the moment.

Not sure. ^__^ Some of the last weekends of December have some fairly big drops (for Japan anyway), while other last weekends see very small drops or even a few increases.

Another comparison for Wall-E vs Up.

After three weeks Wall-E's total was just above $17m. Up hit $17m in two weeks.

Avatar is now the most popular movie on Eiga ( http://eiga.com/movie/ranking/ ) a day before it opens.

And weekend rankings (Dec. 19-20)

1 1 ONE PIECE FILM STRONG WORLD 東映 丸の内TOEI1ほか 2
2 初 Useless cantabile/the last movement first volume TOHOシネマズ日劇ほか 1
3 3 UP TOHO シネマズ日劇ほか 3
4 2 Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Double Decade TOEI1ほか 2
5 4 2012 ソニー・ピクチャーズエンタテインメント 丸の内ルーブルほか 5
6 初 映画 レイトン教授と永遠の歌姫 東宝 シネマメディアージュほか 1
7 5 Mega Monster Battle THE MOVIE 2
8 初 THE 4TH KIND フォース・カインド ワーナー・ブラザース映画 丸の内ピカデリーほか 1
9 6 Public Enemies TOHOシネマズスカラ座ほか 2
10 初 ウルルの森の物語 東宝 TOHOシネマズ有楽座ほか 1

Second consecutive week in No.1. Strong World has earned just shy of 25 million USD over a 10 day period from nearly 1.8 million theatre goers.

Up was at 17m after 10 days, so very good news for One Piece.

Just edited the post. I doubt it expanded because Evangelion 2.0 was only in 150 or so theatres, similar to One Piece and opened to a 45,000 pta, but never expanded. Still did over 40m though.
