Coco Before Chanel is certainly doing very well in Japan for a film like that.

7 openers in the top 10.

Astro Boy debuting a No.10 is disappointing.

I haven't updated this in a month, sorry. BOM INTL is still behind on everything, jeez.

10 new MY RAINY DAYS GAGA $330,448 -- 121 -- $2,731 2 $330,448

MJ should see 40m, making it the second biggest film of the fall behind 20th Centry Boys - Chapter 3 (50m). The film was No.1 for Nov 14-15, beating A Christmas Carol (though I think one article said ACC opened at No.1, so it had to be close if the estimates had MJ at No.1 again, either way, it had to have a good hold this weekend).

Post Re: Japan Box Office (09) Nov.
This Is It is still holding up very well. It'll even have a shot at the Top 10 of the year. 40m is basically a lock for it. Up will surely find a place in the Top 10, and I'm sure there's at least another local film that will find it's way into the Top 10 this winter, too.

BOM (probably off by wide margins) 2009, Top 10

1. Rookies: The Movie Toho ($90m) *
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince WB ($85m) *
3. Red Cliff: Part II Toho-Towa ($56.4m)
4. Twentieth Century Boys - Chapter Three Toho ($50m) *
5. Pokemon the 12th Movie Toho ($49m)
6. Evangelion: 2.0 n/a ($41m)
7. Amalufi Toho ($40m) *
8. Gokusen: The Movie Toho ($38m) *
9. Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser Toho ($35.7m)
10. Angels and Demons Sony ($34.2m)

*Since BOM decided to fuck up the INTL section, these films' totals aren't known as they were still playing. Sooo, they are guesses on my part based on the last known total and the last known weekend gross. All of these will likely increase because BOM happens to be low on everything the past few years, they don't update after a certain number of weeks. So I'm using Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) for previous year.

Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) 2008, Top 10

1. Ponyo on a Cliff (Toho) $172.15m
2. Boys Over Flowers: Final (Toho) $86.07m
3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (PPI) $63.42m
4. Departures {Shochiku) $61m
5. Red Cliff: Part I (Toho-Towa) $56.09m
6. Suspect X (Toho) $54.64m
7. Pokemon the 11th Movie (Toho) $53.31m
8. Partners: The Movie (Toei) $49.31m
9. I Am Legend (WB) $47.87m
10. Wall-E (Disney) $44m

Only Wall-E and Departures are BOM numbers since they grossed a great deal of their totals in 2009 and weren't included. BOM seems totally useless with international numbers now that I've found numbers from the actual source of the number. And boy does it change so much, Eiren's Top 10 of 2007 puts one film over 100m when, according to BOM, no film since 2004 had crossed 100m until Ponyo did in 2008.

Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) 2007, Top 10

1. Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (Disney) $102.46m
2. Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (WB) $88.36m
3. Hero (Fuji TV / Toho) $76.61m
4. Spider-Man 3 (Sony) $66.93m
5. Letters From Iwo Jima* (WB) $47.94m
6. Pokémon: The Rise Of Darkrai (10th Movie) (Toho) $47.19m
7. Always: Sunset On Third Street 2** (NTV / Toho) $42.86m
8. Monkey Magic (Fuji TV / Toho) $41.08m
9. Love and Honour* (Shochiku) $38.63m
10. Transformers (UIP) $37.69m

Yes, BOM has $91.1m, but that's probably the total when they stopped tracking it. Same with many, many others. We all know Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince wasn't just dropped from theatres and finish with $83m while it was still doing six digit figures, and this when BOM's INTL section was still being updated.

Eiren has numbers for half the decade, and I'm looking for their official number for 2004-2006 right now. Here is this also, pretty much every stat regarding the box office this decade.

Good for 2012, but even more impressive for This Is It. Remaining almost flat and crossing 40m with ease. 50m is easily in reach now.

Disappointing for Inglourious Basterds but the distributor really chose the wrong weekend to open it. I mean against 2012?! C'mon!

11/28-29 estimate rankings

1 1 2012 SPE 2
2 3 DISNEY'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL Disney 3
3 4 No More Cry !!! (JPN.) Toho 3
4 5 INGLORIOUS BASTARDS Toho Towa 2
5 7 The Unbroken (JPN.) Toho 6
6 NEW THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON Asmik Ace/Kadokawa 1
7 6 Zero Focus (JPN.) Toho 3
8 8 I Give My First Love To You (JPN.) Toho 6
9 10 Fresh Pretty Cure! (JPN.Animation) Toei 5
10 9 Macross Frontier The Movie (JPN.Animation) KLOCK WORX 2

Just when This Is It crosses 40m with ease, and is aiming for 50m, still in the top 3, Sony removes it from theatres. WTF. The film had a solid 10/15m left.

For comparison:

8 N Twilight Asmik Ace $689,676 - 199 - $3,466 $689,676 1
5 N Twilight New Moon Kadokawa $787,692 - 197 - $3,998 $787,692 1

Very little growth here. I wouldn't even call it growth really.

2009 has lost a lot of ground on 2008. Jan-June was up 17%, but Jan-Oct. is now up just 0.3%. There just wan't a way to keep up with Ponyo's post summer run last year.

Ponyo:
First Week: 14.3M [1.56B]
Second Week: 15.01M [1.65B], +0.7M [+76.6M] (total - 29.3M [3.2B])
Third Week: 18.45M [2.05B], +3.44M [+375M] (total - 48M [5.25B])
Fourth Week: 17.6M [1.93B], -0.85M [-282M] (total - 65.5M [7.2B])
Fifth Week: 25.4M [2.77B], +7.8M [+855M] (total - 90M [10B])*Holiday Week*
Sixth Week: 14.2M [1.55B] , -11.2M (total - 104.2M [11.5B])
Seventh Week: 13.3M [1.42B], -0.9M (total - 117.5M [12.7B])
Eighth Week: 7.8M [.846B], -5.5M (total - 125.4M [13.61B])
Ninth Week: 6.3M [.657B], -1.5M (total - 131.7M [14B])
Tenth Week: 2.2M [.233B], -4.1M (total - 133.9M [14.2B])
Eleventh Week: 2.6M [.277B], +0.4M (total - 136.5M [14.5B])
Twelth Week: 5.3M [.542B], +2.7M (total - 141.8M [14.9B])
Thirteenth Week: 4.4M [.448B], -0.9M (total - 146.2M [15.35B]
Total - $172.15M

Anything above $7 million would be great for Up.

$7m is probably a bit too high. Wall-E opened below $5m, but finished around $50m. I think Up will do slightly better, but not an opening 50% or more over Wall-E. The multiplier will be around 10 afterall.

would 3D be a factor in japan. Some one from japan told in BOM that 3D tickets costs 500 yen more. I think there was a HR article about 3D counts in OS countries. I forgot the number for japan.

Well, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 3D - $419,385 - $1.3m. :-p

3D isn't big in Japan, in fact, the IMAX site only has 12 IMAX/3D theatres in the entire country. I doubt 3D will do well if tickets are indeed 500 more yen. It's already around $15 for a ticket, the average japanese person only sees 1/2 movies a year.

It's a completely different situation there.

IA movies aren't that big a deal in japan. Pixar movies always play well(except cars). Plus the theme of Up is miyazaki like. It should play well.

I found the HR article. There are 150 3d screens and the 3D ticket rate is 2000yen compared to 1200 yen for 2D.

Quote:
Toho, along with dominating distribution, is still the largest exhibitor with more than 550 screens, which are steadily being digitized. Along with digitization comes 3D, which is finally making its presence felt after a number of false starts. There are now about 150 3D-capable screens nationwide, and the first domestic, and Asian, 3D live-actioner, "The Shock Labyrinth," opened on nearly 100 of them in October. The horror flick from Takashi Shimizu ("The Grudge"), posted good per-screen averages according to distributor Asmik Ace.

"The per-screen figures are good in part because ticket prices are higher, at around ¥2,000 ($23)," says Asmik's Joe Ikeda. Average admission for regular films is closer to ¥1,200 ($14). The December release of "Avatar" should spread the 3D gospel wider, and more domestic productions are likely, Ikeda believes.

Nice find.

Up will play well I believe, and should beat Wall-E. But a big opening (7, 8, or more) isn't going to happen. An opening of that level would likely mean a total almost double Wall-E's.

Finally some Non-Bom 2009 figures, as suspected, BOM was way off on these two. Over 10m low on both!

Quote:
TOKYO -- "Rookies," a dramedy about a baseball team in a tough high school, has topped the Japan box office for 2009, according to figures released Friday by Bunka Tsushin entertainment news service.

The pic, which was produced Tokyo Broadcasting System based on the net's hit series, scored 8.5 billion yen ($99 million) following its May bow
. It also recorded the highest DVD shipments for the year, including both the rental and sell categories, with 500,000 units.

This beats the total of "Boys Over Flowers," another TBS production that had the best B.O. for a live-action pic last year with $87 million, while moving 400,000 DVD units.

Based on a best-selling comic by Masanori Morita, "Rookies" began airing on TBS in 2008. The pic follows the fortunes of the drama's baseball team as its members enter their third year of high school and shoot for a slot in a national tournament.

The highest-ranking foreign pic at the 2009 box office, according to Bunka Tsushin, was "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," with $93 million.

So the top 2 of the year (I hope Rookies hits 100m, just 1m away, but I don't know if it's still playing, doubtful though since 6 months is usually when local films end their runs) so far:

1. Rookies: The Movie - $99m
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - $93m

Potter 6 ends the downward spiral for the franchise (HP4 90, HP5 88), being the first to see an increase, and probably beat Potter 5 worldwide even though BOM has it below it.
