According to Deadline Argylle will stay at #1 while Lisa Frankenstein will open with 4m. Figures.

-70% for Argylle seems bad considering no competition.

ABY's path to $100M is literally the only thing interesting about the Feb. box office.

It needed a good drop and got it with 11%. The studio added 200 theaters before Valentines Day which was very smart and encouraging. I'd say there are more bragging rights to get a rom com to $100M than there is a comic book movie to $300M since its such a rarity. ABY still hasn't finished in the top 3 over the weekend yet 8 weekends on. Needs a 7.28X multiplier from this weekend on if it pulls a $3.1M weekend (-11% drop) though impact expected from Super Bowl. Just about $19.5M to go from Sunday on. What Men Want tripled its daily gross on Valentine's Day 2019 so maybe ABY can spike up for $2M on Wed and do $400K on M/Tu to be at $83.3M ish by the end of Valentine's Day, then maybe $3M over the 4day long weekend and next Thursday's gross can bring it to about $86.6M.

Beekeeper is nice too. It could maybe finish with $70M which is absurd as it could have landed just as easily < $25M.

Argylle could miss $7M this weekend with the big drops expected on Sunday. Just horrendous.

Beating a dead horse but it's been a full month since Mean Girls and Beekeeper came out and the only wide releases that came out were Argylle, ISS, Lisa Frankenstein and the Chosen. Wtf.

It has to be the strikes? public's right. If Dune hadn't moved things would be looking pretty bleak right now. Also, how much of a turnoff did the Argylle trailers have to be to make people stay away with nothing else out?

We have 4 movies budgeted at $75M+ in 5 weeks opening in March as tentpoles (Ghostbusters, Dune, Kung Fu Panda 4, Godzilla/Kong).

Opening KFP4 at least during Chinese New Year (this weekend) would have been a great move.

Box office on Friday was a whopping $9.4M for the top 10 combined. With the Superbowl, we may miss $35M for the three day. This feels like bad scheduling too as one of the four should have moved up.

The studios never learn. It's easy to blame the strikes (and yes they are partly to blame) but as O said, there are a glut of tentpoles opening in March that could easily have been spread into February.

Even by SB weekend standards, this one is dire.

Outside of Mar 2020 - May 2021 (peak Covid) I had to go back to 1994 to find a top 10 lower than the $30M this weekend. Tickets have gone up 165% since then. :zonks: I went back to 1981 to find the lowest admission top 10 weekends but I think the only reason why they are lower is because data is missing. So this is probably the least attended weekend outside of Covid in the last 40+ years of data tracked on Mojo.

The fact that Argylle dropped 63% even the next top movie at $3.8M, even with the Superbowl is even worse than its original weekend.

Wonka may still likely be in the top 10 by the time Dune comes out, making it 12 weeks there. Not bad for a movie that opened under $40M.

ABY passes $80M! $19.9M to go to $100M but this week is make or break for it to get there. Needs an 8.36X multiplier from this weekend on. Needs a historically crazy Valentine's Day and amazing hold next weekend but I think it's 25% got a chance for $100M right now. Even so it's already at a 13.3X multiplier from a $6M OW so its a big success regardless.

The visual look of Lisa Frankenstein seemed cheap to me

I didn't know about the Dune re-release - 3x Turning Red seems decent

Actually saw Turning Red in theaters yesterday, looked great on the big screen. Shame we'll never know how it would've done counterprogramming the Batman.

The Color Purple is actually Cats level bomb when you consider the international gross is only 5 million.

The Taste of Things $126,015 $42,005 PTA

It did well but only 3 theaters. Probably wonn't do much in its expansion because it was ignored by the Oscars but it is a nice film.

Dune re-release pulling $1.7M with little advertising is pretty impressive. It will finally pass $110M domestic, just took 3 years. It's global tally is $392M. Maybe it can get a double bill and push the original past $400M.

Has anyone seen the audience rating for The Taste of Things on Rotten Tomatoes? It seems absurdly low. Quite the contrast with the tomatometer. I haven't seen it but it looked like it would be an art house crowd-pleaser.

This proves there is no reliable moviegoing crowd anymore. COVID changed viewing habits permanently.

LOL. A bad weekend of $31M became an even worse one at $29.1M for the top 10.

Need to go to May 2021 for a worse weekend at $17,211,825 but that was peak Covid.

Pathetic but at the same time you can't really blame studios for not wanting to open anything on this weekend. They should just take turns making football related romantic comedies and release them every year.

Not that it would have made much difference but maybe Lisa Frankenstein could've gone for Halloween season... it's not that much of a romantic movie for VD.
