Re: Production Budgets
I wonder why That's My Boy cost so much. Even if Sandler brought home 25-30 mil. I s'pose Sandler comedies always have budgets in the 70-95 million range, though.
Rock of Ages' budget is decent, especially since this is the type of project where the budget could have easily ballooned and engorged. I can imagine an alternate universe where it's a Universal film and cost 130 million.

Re: Production Budgets
I think both the budgets are good but a little high. I thought both movies looked more like $50m-$60m budgeted. Also I think given the marketing push behind them they are not going to a big as their budget domestically and will have to depend on OS grosses to get their money back. The OS appeal for both is limited specially ROA.

Rock of Ages should be huge in England at least.

Re: Production Budgets
That may not have seemed bad for TMB but I don't see it being big OS, so it won't make money.

Re: Production Budgets
Huh, That's My Boy might actually be close to being a flop. Overseas might save it (Sandler's overseas power has increased the last few years), but it might not even make back half of its budget in the U.S. Not Sandler's biggest flop (Little Nicky made $59M WW on an $85M budget), but still awful for him.

Re: Production Budgets
$230M The Amazing Spider-Man Link - http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/mo ... ?track=rssPretty damn high for TASM. I didn't think it would be over $200M, but considering how SFX heavy the trailers are and the amount of marketing it does make sense. It's going to have to really make a killing WW in order to break even which is possible considering how popular Spider-Man is overseas.

Studios just have to go with the flow if these franchise films' budgets blow up, I guess. That said, a $80 million Spider-Man film was always preposterous.

Re: Production Budgets
This is ok budget. Spidey 3 made almost $900m WW without 3D The buzz for Spidey is much more in OS markets than say TDKR. I think $1b WW total is highly likely.

The initial 80m budget might be used only for marketing,

Re: Production Budgets
I can't believe the budget for 47 Ronin. I thought this was a niche project for Keanu Reeves to indulge a certain samurai-movie fantasy. A film with a Sin City/Ninja Assassin level budget.
If the budget is 200 million, it's around 150 million higher than I expected.
I s'pose it does have this intriguing synergy where it's as much as American film as it a Japanese film, but still. Wow.

Re: Production Budgets
It's even stranger considering Keanu Reeves hasn't done anything of (financial) significance in almost half a decade. Action is his wheelhouse, but even then. A strange star upon which to build a 200 million dollar hard-sell samurai movie.
It's such a crazy proposition in certain respects, I'm pulling for it do very well.

Magnus wrote: Though surprisingly, Reeves does seem to have some sort of OS appeal if you look at this BO history. Street Kings somehow made 40m OS, double the amount it did domestically. The majority of his films actually have had a very healthy OS ratio. You're right there. I notice Constantine did almost 70% of its worldwide 230 million total overseas.

Re: Production Budgets
It's interesting World War Z, despite its enormous and still-expanding budget, only has one real star. Yes, it's Brad Pitt, but still. Once you move past Pitt, there's Matthew Fox (David Duchovny 2.0), David Morse, and the lady who plays the detective on The Killing.
Surprised they didn't at least cast a more recognizable actress as Pitt's character's wife.

With that budget, I'm really curious how the first trailer for 47 RONIN will look like...

We've been due for a Samurai trend at the box office. Afro Samurai or Samurai Champloo would make great movies.

After 47 Ronin, Keanu Reeves will change it up with...an action movie called Man of Tai Chi.

I know it doesn't matter in a world where Liam Neeson is kicking a... all the time, but Keanu will turn 48 years in 2 1/2 months...
